Preparing for a brand new academic year

AMECI teachers undergo intensive training Catherine Love Ama

In preparation for a more challenging and more daunting academic year, the brand new set of educators and non-teaching staff underwent a 2-day training also known as In-Service Summer training at AMECI last June 03-04. Various sessions for professional advancement and responsibility check were undertaken before the classes’ starts. “This is an opportunity for us to strengthen more our knowledge in the professional field and to learn new trends and strategies especially that most of us are neophytes in the field of teaching. This training will remind us of our tasks and responsibilities as torchbearers of this humble institution,” said Principal Aljon S. Bucu. Meanwhile, selected teachers who attended the seminar in Tuguegarao City discussed the content of the curriculum guide for various specializations used in K-12 program to better enhance the pedagogy of

the neophyte teachers. Mylene Jacoba, Head of the Secondary Department lectured constructivism and emphasized the significance of the learner’s role in the teaching-learning process. She also added that teachers should adhere in this philosophy because it is the root of the K12 curriculum which aims to develop a learner-centred set-up. The second day of the seminar was spent with The Purveyor adviser, Don Angelo De Guzman in his discussion of Anti-Bullying Act. His discussions included the overview of bullying cases in the Philippines, different types of bullying and teacher’s role in eradicating the cases of bullying in school. Furthermore, Dr. Lucila B. Aggari, School Director of AMECI lectured on lesson planning which she labelled as the blueprint of the teachinglearning process. She taught the teachers the right way of writing

strategy in catering Senior High School students. Aside from allotting funds for infrastructures and hiring of teachers, the department sees the system as resolution to apparent immediate needs like lack of classrooms in some public schools. On the other hand, 134 SHS studes in the Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) and HUMMS program were accommodated in AMECI. 77 were from the last year’s grade 10 students and 57 were transferred-in students from various schools around Isabela. These students are all recipients of the said voucher.

Aljon S. Bucu, Principal of AMECI stated in an interview that the grants offered to SHS students is meant to make education accessible to poor yet deserving students. It also affords other learners’ who wish to stay in private school despite their financial status. Furthermore, it strengthens the private-public partnership as the government subsidizes the school fees of each student. “I am very thankful for the government’s voucher program because I was given the chance to enrol in a private school,” said Rosana Rosales, a transferred in student.

LGU Tumauini awarded as best ARTA implementer Catherine Love Ama

The Local Government Unit (LGU) Tumauini once again proved its excellence in the field of public service and good governance after reaping the fifth award for best implementer of Anti-Red Tape Act (ARTA), Provincial level given by the Department of Interior and Local Government Unit (DILG) last September 01. Tumauini received the award for five consecutive years after beating other municipalities in the criteria issued by the DILG. Pursuant to RA 9845, the said award is given to various municipalities in the Philippines that excelled in the upgrading of standard delivery services for the people. The said act includes the standardized process of transactions between clients and

government offices. Mrs. Lorelie Pua, Municipal Administrator, said that this feat is through the collaborative effort and genuine public service of the government officials and employees of the municipality of Tumauini. She explained that what geared Tumauini in this award is the continuous updating of the streamlined and cordial services in the municipality which includes the simplified processing of certifications, updated citizen’s charter, friendly customer services and presence of public assistance and complaint desk. Furthermore, Tumauini will represent Isabela with the hope of bagging its fifth Most Outstanding award in the regional level.

JHS enrolment up by 12.58% Jon ANdrew Gumatay

As compared to last academic year’s statistics, Junior High School enrolment for school year 2015-2016 gained an increase of 12.58% or one-eighth of the total number of junior high school population according to the data released by the school registrar. A total number of 771 students were enrolled for the junior high program; 229 Grade 7; 226 Grade 8; 177 Grade 9 and 139 Grade 10 as compared to last year’s 674 enrolees. School registrar, Jeanalyn Tumolva, explained that the significant increase could be an effect of the no top up policy given by the school, quality of instruction, educational background of teachers and the ESC grants offered by the Department of Education. She also said that the laurels of the school, proving its excellence in the various fields of education, could be a key factor in the significant increase. According to the Office of the Principal, this is a sign that AMECI High School department is already known in the entire Area 1 because many students from the nearby towns chose to enrol in AMECI. Meanwhile, a total number of 134 senior high school students enrolled in AMECI under Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) and Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) program. To address the challenge of the population increase, the school hired twelve (12) new high school teachers and constructed five (5) additional classrooms for Junior High School department only.

Approximately 1.5 million students enrolled in senior high school year as opposed to the released data of Kabataan Party list claiming the probable occurrence of 400,000 thousand dropout rate due to the additional two years of basic education. DepEd chief, Leonor Briones explained that the debunked figure released by Kabataan Party list last June is due to the fact that some schools have opened their school year last August. It also disproves the previous claims that many Filipinos oppose K12. Briones, together with other DepEd officials, presented the update of the full implementation of the K12 curriculum in senate hearing. Meanwhile, DepEd Undersecretary Dina Ocampo revealed that a total of 1, 517, 610 SHS students were enrolled in the database of Learner Information System which means that the 1, 460, 970 grade 10 graduates last school year pursued senior high school while the rest of the enrolees are school returnees. The success of the senior high school enrolment is through the leadership of the former DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro after he ordered school officials to track down the Grade 10 graduates and encouraged them to continue their education.

Admin hires 18 new teachers Haagen Brylle Baccay

Considering the needs analysis conducted by the administration of AMECI headed by the school principal Aljon S. Bucu and school director Dr. Lucila B. Aggari last May, the school decided to hire 18 new teachers with various specializations to complete the roster of teaching staff for Academic Year 20162017. The decision of hiring the number of teachers for this school year is based on the needs of the school and the significant increase in the number of enrollees. The application process had been very tough for the selection committee because a great number of applicants submitted their intention letters to teach this school year. Continuing its culture of hiring the best and the brightest in the field of education, the school filtered the applicants through series of interviews and demonstration teaching. Academic distinctions and skills were also considered as plus factors. The complete list of newly hired teachers are as follows: Irish Beth Gannaban, Jeric Tan, Delmimar Mendez, Mark Billy Cacal, Michelle Taguba, Bryan Talosig, Liezl Galvan, Rita Damagan, Aireen Mendoza, Kimberly Velilia, Mary Rose Pazzibugan, Aimee Guiou (ISUCabagan), Irene Mercado, Florife Narag, Julius Allapitan (ISUIlagan), Jeneisis Perdido (ISURoxas) Anno Domini Carvajal (PNU-North Luzon), and Jamby Concha(HGB).

AMECI integrates Campus Journalism in English class Venice Morillo

In order to keep abreast with the trends of journalism, Advance Montessori Education Center of Isabela, Inc. (AMECI) integrates Campus Journalism in all high school English classes. AMECI is not purely focused in the prescribed curriculum but it also thinks of possible ways to expose the students in various fields. Campus journalism is included as a subpart of the English subject which focuses in the discussion of journalism in general and different fields such as news writing and editorial writing. For the past ten years, campus journalism is taught to elementary students which paved way to various

recognitions and awards in the regional and national level. “If integrating campus journalism in the elementary department is effective, I believe that it will also create a huge stride in our high school students especially that all English teachers in the high school department have journalistic background,” said De Guzman, The Purveyor adviser. Mary Dann Barba, co-adviser of The Purveyor said that it is very important to assimilate the subject campus journalism to hone the writing skills of the students and to prepare them in various writing tilts like Division Schools Press Conference which is conducted every year.

Appointed DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones expressed her full support to the K12 program as classes opened last June 13. Briones, the newly appointed Secretary of the Department of Education and a UP NCPAG professor emeritus, backs K12 even though President Duterte is initially sceptical about it. She explained that transitioning from 10 years of basic education to K12 would not only help Filipinos who wish to seek jobs abroad but would also help educational tourism since there are also foreigners who wish to study in the country. In her televised interview, Briones said that there is no way the government would stop K12 due to certain problems that might occur. Instead, she thinks that restructuring is the best solution to do. The restructuring of K12 program will happen in six years’ time which includes more funding and training for teachers handling classes in senior high. Improved instructional materials and textbooks will also be provided as part of the changing needs in this educational reform. Meanwhile, the DepEd chief seeks an additional P45 billion budget from the Department of Budget and Finance as part of the improvements and changes that she aspires. The funds will be allocated to education’s greatest concerns such as implementing an accessible education for every Filipinos. The secretary believes that learners outside the formal learning system should not be left behind in the facelift that will happen. A transition team composed of educational leaders will study the lacks and needs of the department to help Briones in plotting the department priorities.

Cutting the Ties: Is it necessary?

T

he super power country or United States of America and The Republic of the Philippines were allies for several decades. These two countries have always had good relationships with each other and have worked hand in hand in ensuring the security of the people, lands and seas. This 2016, the new President of the Philippines in the person of Rodrigo Duterte plans to cut the ties of Filipino-American alliance in favor of the communist countries specifically China and Russia. This is a bold and unsure action coming from the present leader of our country. USA was considered as the giant country because of its huge involvement and profound leadership in the United Nations Organization (UNO)—the organization which ensures harmony and unites countries around the world believing in the same cause. Philippines is small yet sturdy because of its active involvement in the said organization and strong partnership with US. The Philippines also received various help such as guidance and linkages for decades to date. The significance of the said alliance was also proven when Philippines was shattered by Typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda which left the country in vain. Members of the UN led by the US showered their financial help to let the country rise again. Indeed, Philippines remain reliant to the said organization. Despite the benefits that we are receiving from the ties we have with the US, our President slams and thrashes the ambassador of the US to the Philippines and Barack Obama, the President of US. Without second thoughts, he started to throw unkind words with these people which led to his notso-final statement of withdrawing from the ties that have tested its longevity. The Philippine president also told the US government that cutting the ties is just nothing especially that he is building a strong relationship with China and Russia—the superpower communist countries identified as the enemies of the US. With this not-so-smart move of the President, the people have started asking questions—Are we really ready to cut the ties with the US? Are we really sure that we need no help from the US government in times of calamity or war? Are we really sure that China and Russia is going to back us up in case that we need help? With these questions come vague answers. Perhaps, some of us would agree with the move of the President not because they are avid supporters but because they believe that it is now high time to take the road on our own. Nevertheless, we are convinced that cutting the ties would create greater problems in the future especially that Russia-China partnership is considered tricky. In the end, we are unsure of their allegiance to the partnership that President Duterte is building. In this plight, we need to think smart and logically. Let us express our opinions and sentiments in this timely issue. Who knows? President Duterte might see it in our own point of view. We firmly believe that cutting ties isn’t necessary.

Perhaps, some of us would agree with the move of the President not because they are avid supporters but because they believe that it is now high time to take the road on our own.

he K to 12 program was implemented last 2011 during the administration of former President Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino and former DepEd Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro as a way to improve the educational system in the Philippines. Pursuant to RA 10655, additional years were added to the usual 10 years of basic education. This paradigm shift in the curriculum had brought every persons mind into a haywire. Only few nodded their heads with approval while many seem to refuse the idea. Five years later, the curriculum was fully implemented but still, some of us are half-hearted with the imposed changes. Let me share a review of the said curriculum. THE RATIONALE Covering the kindergarten and 12 years of basic education, the K12 program tends to provide quality education to Filipino learners. This program is aimed to strengthen the foundation of Filipino students so that they would be ready for the global setting. Actually, the goal of K to 12 is very relevant to our needs. Many Filipinos are competing with white-collar jobs abroad and having 12 years of basic education will serve as their advantage. Many Filipinos outside

the country have expressed their troubles regarding the ten years of basic education because they are obliged to study for two more years before they could land for a professional job. The curriculum was also developed to contextualize and enhance the learner’s foundation. Educational planners believe that strengthening the kindergarten program and the core education of the children will also strengthen their ability to adapt in future educational set-up. THE CHANGES ALONG THE WAY The implementation of K to 12 had brought clear changes in the educational system of the Philippines. Among changes, the number of years was the most noticeable one. Many have questioned the intention behind the two additional years because many Filipinos can’t even complete the 10 years of basic education. Truthfully speaking, we can’t blame the parents’ disapproval in these changes because they are just thinking of the difficulties that they might encounter along the way. Nevertheless, parents should also think of the significance of these changes and the positive results that it may contribute. In the end, full support is expected of them to achieve the best results of this curriculum change.

WHAT LIES AHEAD? It is an undeniable fact that this curriculum change will benefit us in many ways. The K to 12 curriculum will give us the power to compete in the international market in terms of education and work force. Graduates of this curriculum are honed to be globally competitive citizens. And yes, this curriculum may not have been liked by many but it surely functions as a tool in gearing up for a better future and a better Philippines. In the end, I would still say kudos to 12.

hen I was in the grade school, I had the deepest desire of studying in a private educational institution, but things weren’t possible during that time for I am not from a well-off family. That dream was soon granted when a close relative informed me that a private school in our town offers free education. This opportunity was made possible with the aid of Article XIV of the 1987 Philippine Constitution and RA 8545 also known as Expanded Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education. The main goal of the said act was to make quality education accessible to all Filipinos. This act also features grants such as Educational Service Contract (ESC) and Educational Voucher System (EVS) to students who wish to have a taste of private education. Expansion of support for private education by extending the coverage of GASTPE to Senior High School students was also included in the recent order. With this, senior high school students from public schools were given the chance to enrol in private schools and universities of their choice. Their tuition and miscellaneous fees were subsidized thru voucher program. Undeniably, this program helps students in many ways. This would be my fourth year as an ESC grantee. In return, we the grantees should learn to appreciate the opportunity that was handed to us. We should study hard and ensure that we make the most out of our schooling. We have the responsibility to be a responsive citizen. To all grantees, let’s all give back and pay forward.

he growing number of people being killed sent a wave of panic across the Philippines’ drug infested communities. We have seen in the television the numerous cases of human beings receiving bullets because of their connection and involvement with drug dealers and syndicates which eventually led to their deaths Way back Digong’s electoral campaign, when asked about his plans in clearing the uncontrollable drug use and selling in Juan’s land, he promised that he will do everything to stop it even though it gets bloody. In his radical observance, he understands that the scope of drugs in the Philippines is too complex that he needs to use his iron fist. Months after President Duterte took his oath, numerous bodies were found scattered in Juan’s landmasses. To human rights advocates, this is the start of something unbearable. According to them, the underlying reason behind the numerous deaths is not justified by the taken actions. The community is divided because of the succeeding unfortunate events. Many believe that these ‘drugistas’ deserved their deaths for they are the root of evil in our society while others think that they

need chances to start a brand new life. In my point of view, I agree with the latter one. Drug addiction should be seen as a health condition which is meant to be treated. There were so many drug users craving for rehabilitation. These people were meant to be helped by our government. They surrendered because they want to have a better future ahead of them. But what change is really coming? Is it normalising the events of killing without due process of law? The common excuse of these law enforcers is that the suspects were armed and had fired at them first, or had tried to grab their firearms within the negotiation. Anyone could hardly believe this yarn, but it’s amazing how these policemen could tell their version of story with a straight face. I believe that some of these policemen have abused their powers. According to my mom who is a police officer herself, if ever a drug user fights back, he should be shot not on fatal areas. But what we are seeing in television are fatal shots which assured the death of our drug users. Actually, this is something that every policeman should know—when and where to pull his or her triggers.

IRREFUTABLE IDEAS

But what change is really coming? Is it normalising the events of killing without due process of law?

All in all, the problem in this administration is that they are too focused in this war on drugs forgetting that the underlying reason behind this widespread selling is poverty. Instead of declaring war on drugs, why not declare war against poverty, child trafficking and hunger? It will surely help if they consider these problems even once. The government should understand that killing is not the only solution in eradicating drug related problems. We have to stand firm in protecting people’s right to life. Let’s all raise the bar in this plight—stop pulling the triggers.

news about the approved burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos, dubbed as one of the most corrupt leaders in the world, at the Libingan ng mga Bayani was opposed by human rights victims of his regime. This event had caused me to study the case and further understand the battle cry of these extortion and violence victims. Especially that President Duterte is backing the said burial. Things can’t be refuted. Marcos’ leadership and governance had brought terror to the nation. It is a surprise that many critics had disagreed with his proposed burial--to think that it would be at the heroes’ cemetery. A hero is a peace maker and a freedom seeker. No matter what, he will fight for it even if it costs his life. The way we view a hero is far different from how Marcos is described by people who suffered greatly in his political era. Marcos’ regime is an era of multiple injustice and murdering acts. His decisions and actions had caused troubles into the lives of the masses. He may be dead a long time ago, but the wounds he caused remained

fresh to us. Marcos is a President and a former soldier. Yes, he had done good things to our country, but is that enough for him to be called a hero? Is that enough for him to be honoured and buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani? I doubt it. Marcos is a President who ruled his nation on oblivion—he’s blind of the fact that the people were suffocated of his rules; he made his people gritted their teeth on him, yearning for freedom. His cases of plunder and mass killings had pulled his goodness and status to the ground. Recently, President Duterte had some sort of illegitimate attest on how the burial must undergo. He said that Filipinos have to move on for what is done in the past and accept the burial of the late President in the heroes’ cemetery. How could we move forward if they kept on scattering salt to our wounds? According to Amnesty International (AI), Martial law had led 70,000 people in jail, 34,000 were tortured and 3,240 were killed. Marcos also put our country in debt that grew from $2 Billion to $28 Billion. Indeed, the debt can be paid but the damage in the lives of the people is a different

story. According to Sen. Francis Pangilinan, burying a murderer and a thief in the Libingan ng mga Bayani is not a moving on process but more of teaching our children to honour murderers and plunderers. Libingan ng mga Bayani is a place for heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for our country. Burying the former President Marcos there is a direct attack to the nation. It’s an act of tolerating his unjust and unreasonable deeds. I do hope that President Duterte would see it in our vantage point. Marcos is no hero at all.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, I would like to congratulate the administration and teachers of AMECI for being true to its philosophy; Every child has a genius potential in more ways than one. I have seen that the administration and teachers tried their best to expose the students in various fields other than academics. This move creates equal opportunities to students who are inclined in other fields. Recently, some students were given the chance to show their genius potentials in sports as they competed outside the school. I hope that this practice would continue every academic year. Kudos to AMECI for this! James Cabico

Dear James, We agree with your insights regarding the improvement of the school in terms of creating equal opportunities for students who are inclined in sports and other fields. In our talk with the Principal, he said that the school will strengthen the sports arena to give justification to the school philosophy knowing that there are diverse talents from the students which may not be found from textbooks or social media. Furthermore, exposing these young individuals where they can excel in their cup of tea will hone them better to know themselves well and to be holistically multi-talented. Editor

ampus Journalism is vital in the development of students’ patriotism, and social responsiveness. In this field, we learn to appreciate the values of truth, integrity and social consciousness. It also give us the opportunity to safeguard the freedom of thought and expression and to be involved in the critical observation of events in the campus and in the country as well. Looking back, it never appeared in my wildest dreams that I would be writing columns and stuffs for a newspaper like this. Writing was just for classroom works when I was in the primary school. Nevertheless, I have learned the essence of writing when I was asked to compete in a school press conference and eventually won a place. Since then, I realized that there is life in writing— and that is the opportunity to inform the people through my write-ups. Strengthening our nationalism is very evident in our service. I scribble because I love my country. Writing for the people is the best way of showing the genuine love for humanity. As a campus journalist, I write because I want to speak up and give a thundering voice to

the voiceless. I may be young, but journalism taught me that I can make a difference in simple ways. Thru writing, we can respond to the things that are meant to be solved. That’s the best thing about being a campus journalist. I scribble words and in return I influence others to find solutions for recurring problems. This 2016, the roles of journalists will be pushed to its edge. The transition period of one political administration to another is considered a hot scene because of controversial cases like extra-judicial killings and anomalies in the previous government. With these, we are expected to fulfill our duties in safeguarding the truth for the people. We are expected to deliver relevant information without biases and prejudices. The responsibilities on our shoulders are heavy but it will surely benefit the people. In the end, the heavy responsibilities are just nothing as compared to the contributions that we would offer. At this juncture, I encouraged everyone to lift a pen and scribble; take the full responsibility and be a campus journalist.

ith the on-going progress of K to 12, by virtue of Republic Act 10655, all completers of Junior High School are encouraged to pursue higher education through the Senior High School program. This curriculum was developed to create holistic learners that are equipped academically and vocationally. The Senior High School program comes with various tracks and strands to choose from. We will soon dwell with the additional two years of education, and this will serve as our guide across the path of tertiary level. Certainly, choosing the right track will somehow make our tertiary course easier. To help us decide wisely, here are some points to consider: SELF ASSESSMENT Assessing our strengths and weaknesses should be first in our list. We need to identify our forte and plot it with the right Senior High School track. Knowing where you are good at leads you to the best field because you would have a clearer view of what path to take. Decisions like pursuing academic track or settling with a technical vocational field should be answered immediately. We also need to consider our dreams and hobbies. Doing something that we like makes everything easier. TRACK ANALYSIS We need to have a clear understanding of the SHS tracks.

We need to pick a track that would fit our wants and potentials. For example, you are good in math and science plus you aspire to become a medical practitioner then it is better if you enrol in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Selecting the right track will give us specific competencies that are helpful in our desired course. SCHOOL SELECTION AND AVAILABILITY Not all schools will offer the same strands and tracks. You should also check available options. If your desired track is not within the vicinity of your hometown don’t worry. Each track has core subjects that are common to all Senior High Schools. Yes, taking tracks leading to your desired college course is an advantage but it doesn’t mean that you couldn’t take a degree that you want if it is not aligned with your Senior High School track. Making wise decisions would not guarantee a perfect result, but somehow it could lead us to better roads.

hanges in the educational system are inevitable”. This was the remark of our teacher as we go through the first day of our Senior High School class. “Changes are made to improve and mend the deficiencies in the previous educational system”. He smiled at us, as if trying to assure the class that this curriculum would help us in many ways.

The start of the school year wasn’t a normal one for students who recently finished their tenth grade. 2016 is a year of facing new challenges as we pioneer the first batch of Senior High School students in the country. What makes us all nervous is the fact that we were the first one in the country to experience Senior High School education. Aside from that, we were somewhat lost with what this school year would offer? Are we going to be treated the same way we were in Junior High School? Are we going to have difficult subjects? Are the teachers and educational sectors ready for the

said change?

Watching TV news alone and reading rants in Facebook gave us chills. We witnessed how certain groups initiated rallies to prevent the full-implementation of the K to 12 curriculum and we have heard of stories about the problems many schools are facing like lack of classrooms and teaching materials. Despite the encountered problems, the full course of implementation was pushed through because DepEd said that they were ready. “Let’s keep our fingers crossed,” these were my words when I was asked by a friend if I was ready for this new venture. During our first day, our teacher explained that Senior High School is the continuation of the Junior High School which means that we are still high school students. The main difference that was pointed is that students were given the opportunity to select strands or tracks that are leading path to various degrees. Going through the said curriculum is indeed a challenge. We were introduced to more difficult lessons and we were expected to be independent inside the classroom. As we go through the day to day schedule of Senior High, we have seen ourselves struggle. We all realized that Senior High isn’t going to babysit us—instead it will teach us to stand tall at difficult times and face our fears with bravery. The said change in the educational system embarks the ambitious move of the government to raise the international competitiveness of the Filipino youth. Our teacher also said that through this reform, we could be working anywhere else because the curriculum is already standardized. He also added that this curriculum is benchmarked in countries that have good records in the field of education. With this in mind, we have built better hopes for our future. We now understand the purpose why this curriculum was implemented—it’s meant to make us all globally competitive Filipinos.

The said change in the educational system embarks the ambitious move of the government to raise the international competitiveness of the Filipino youth. As we end the first semester of our Senior High School journey, we realized the significance of the changes that we have undergone. “The changes will definitely hurt you at first”. He said while looking through the window of our souls. “But remember that diamonds are made through rough beginnings, so bear with it and be the best version of yourself through the Senior High School program. ccumulating over 14 million votes in an archipelago of 7, 107 islands of the Pearl of the Orient Seas, Rodrigo Roa Duterte took the position of presidency as his rallying cry over the past years, the cry that made him a leader who elicited so much passion from the citizens without even trying so hard, a leader that redeemed the long lost trust of the nation in an instant. With just one snap of a hand and a blink of an eye, he became a symbol of hope and beginning to many aspirants and made millions of Filipinos believe that he is indeed the change this country needs, change that would uplift the Filipinos into the limelight of success and would bring the country in the pyramid of the known countries we’ve been racing to reach. Clinging to the idea of remodelling this nation, President Duterte, also known as Digong, has indeed created significant moves which awaken and shaken the sleeping consciousness of the public leading to the undying scrupulous

scrutiny of the authority. But apart from all of these, what is more to him than meeting the eye? Is there a mystery that he is trying to hide which is masked by his good intentions for this country that is way beyond his strong personality? Tearing down slowly the wall, let’s try to see in a different point of view the simplest President we ever had. Digong As An Artist Think of him as an artist who uses blood instead of ink. Every stroke of the brush leaves a trail of confusion, leaving you baffled over in a puzzle. This nation was once a pure and white canvass Photo from rappler.com with no life and has only one path to track by the diverse people cultured with the single knowledge we’ve used to do over the years. But suddenly, Digong splattered different colours and hues resulting to a kaleidoscopic view that made this country roar again after Marco’s regime. Art is surely not what he creates, but a rainbow of chaos that would establish the greatest gallery of this nation. Like Michael Angelo, Da Vinci and many other known artists in the world Digong will certainly craft a magnum opus that will make the country grand again. Digong As A Teacher The man of steel from Davao City has outlined an image as the bravest president of the country through his powerful words that will strike your inner senses. The way he speaks would remind you of a teacher, a teacher educating the students with moral lessons needed for a lifelong learning, giving you

We both get bleary and decided to take a seat as we watch the sunset. This is indelible. Day by day, I pray to God not to take away my happiness – my father. I don’t want to feel empty. I couldn’t imagine my life without him. And living without my dad is like asking me to live while not breathing. A part of me is terrified because of the thought that everyone leaves. That’s why I grabbed the chances that I can be with him. ‘Cause even if I don’t want that to happen, I know we can’t deny the fact that he has limited time on earth. My tears betrayed me, it didn’t stop from flowing. I don’t want this to happen but there’s no escape. The only choice is to be strong to face the reality. I gave him so many memories to treasure whenever he’ll leave my side. One cold morning, I was looking for my father and I find him lying unconscious; my heart kept on beating so fast as if it was on a race. I can feel my left chest ache; my heart is breaking into pieces. When I came back to my senses, I immediately called the ambulance, whispering the words, “No dad, not now please!” I held his hand while we are on the way to the hospital, silently praying that he would fight. After that incident, I always make sure that whenever he’s awake, I’m at his side. It destroys me seeing him there, but then again I already knew that this day would come. Few more hours and he passed away. This is my very first heartbreak. But it leaves me no choice but to bear with the pain. After a long week full of ache, I decided to continue my life. I know he’s up there, guiding me. He’ll be sad if I’ll just sit here and cry. Maybe, it’s really his time. And it’s my turn to apply all the teachings of him. He will remain in my heart. I discharged the firearm directly to my head and let my last letter to my Dad, fall down. “Dear Dad, Sorry for the drama! Can you buy me a new laptop? That’s my real birthday wish and please don’t be mad at me because I broke yours? I can’t tell it to you personally because I know I’ll be dead and you’ll be fusing mad. T

he most unbelievable thing that a man could ever do is to destroy the place where he actually resides. In the recent years, we have heard of stories concerning the negligence of the people in protecting the environment. One major concern in the past years is the overexploitation of mining in the Philippines. Staunch anti-mining advocate, Regina ‘Gina’ Lopez was assigned as the chief of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) under the headship of President Rodrigo Duterte. One of the tasks of the department is to

regulate mining and to ensure the protection and conservation of our natural resources. In the President’s first State of the Nation Address, he lauded the initiative of the current DENR chief in regulating a balanced mining activities in the Philippines. He also advised the DENR chief to amend, suspend or revoke mining permits if needed. What does this mean to mining companies? Are they going to shut down from their operations due to not meeting environmental safety standards? In a report, the news caused raged and anger to mining companies because it could impede their usual operations. Nonetheless, Secretary Gina together with environmental advocates believed that this advocacy will be the key solution in

One, two, three smile! Having a sweet and healthy smile is everyone’s dream. Teens nowadays are becoming more and more conscious of their oral health. This is the reason why we see more and more students who consult orthodontics to improve their crooked and crowded teeth. In this case, the best treatment would be dental braces. Many of us view dental braces as a form of fashion and fad. Actually, dental braces is more than that notion. Behind the colourful rubbers and glistening wires are embedded scientific treatment which solves common oral problem. As early as possible, common oral problem should be solved. This is the reason why

we see younger ages wearing their braces. According to orthodontics expert, the ideal age for placement of braces is between 10 and 14 years old because the head and mouth are still growing and teeth are more accessible to straightening. Nevertheless, braces aren’t just for kids. Nowadays, we see more and more adults wearing braces to improve minor oral problems. However, the experience may be traumatic to all ages due to the adjustments that they might encounter along the way like pains of bracket adjustments, and avoidance of all-time favourite foods. Ozone HEALING Armilet Balla

It was in late 1980’s when the world received the news of ozone holes – a very disheartening environmental condition caused by the negligence of the people. This 2016, a good news circulated over the internet – Alas! The ozone starts to heal itself. Ozone plays a vital role in the protection of the earth. The ozone layer filters and blocks the harmful gases in the space. With its hole in the past few years, our life was indeed at stake. Ozone holes has been one of the biggest environmental problems in the world. The holes in the ozone create serious problems such as direct penetration of harmful gases like UV rays which is very harmful to human. Aside from the direct penetration of the UV rays, direct heat coming from solar flares was also observed which caused climate change in the earth. The said change in earth’s temperature had caused environmental

changes like rapid melting of the ice in poles and changes in the weather like stronger typhoons. Based from scientific studies, too much use of CFC’s from sprays, aerosol and refrigeration has been the main cause of ozone depletion. With this serious environmental problem, countries from different corners of the globe begun to ban these chemical products. Banning of products emitting CFC’s is the first step towards the ozone healing. If the healing continues to its maximum level, there is a greater chance that the hole in Antarctica could seal itself back up by the middle of the century which means a safer Earth to live in. The healing signifies the unified effort of people everywhere to save our world from further destruction. Let’s continue the good works in healing the holes of our ozone.

protecting our environment especially that mining companies are not abiding with mining terms and conditions. Mining is a big issue today that needs to be addressed. We can’t deny the fact that mining has its benefits like extracting minerals and coals that are very important in producing energy for daily routine. However, there are clear disadvantages in mining. Mining could cause damages to both underground and surface environment. It also promotes depletion of resources rather than the promotion of reusing existing materials. Meanwhile, Duterte reiterated his stand that he is not against mining for as long as it upholds the most stringent environmental standards and requirements. Yet, many advocates still believe that it is better to stop it completely because it has destroyed

our environment at a higher level. They pointed out that our neighboring countries have stopped mining few years ago. Then why are we going to expand this environmental threat? In the republic Act 7942 or the Philippine Mining Act of 1995, mining is allowable but there are set limitations that mining companies should follow. In contrary, this act is neglected due to frail imposition of laws. Maybe, it is high time to strengthen the teeth of the said act. On the other hand, Lopez assured that there will be no mining applications and explorations that will be renewed in overexploited mining sites. The advocacy is a perfect timing to change our wrong deeds and a perfect shot to save the environment. Mining is an environmental threat and stopping it starts today.

Dental Braces is not single-type. Braces may vary depending on your oral condition and preferences. Dental braces usually come in varieties: The most popular type of brackets are metal, ceramic or plastic, that are glued to teeth. Meanwhile, there are also braces that are hidden and we call them Concealed brackets – these brackets are attached to the back of teeth. Both types of braces use wires to move the teeth to the desired position. One of the most common questions is how long would a person wear his dental braces? Wearing dental braces for a long period of time isn’t easy. It requires patience to handle pains and aches. The length of wearing dental braces depends upon a treatment plan. Minor cases usually lasts from 12-18 months while serious oral problems may last up to 24-36 months. One serious problem for people who wear braces is the selection of foods to eat. They need to cut down foods like sweets, chips

and soda because sugary and starchy foods generate acid and plaques that can cause tooth decay. Hard, solid and crunchy foods should also be avoided because it can result to loosen brackets and wire damage. This is very challenging to some because diet and meal plan would be changed. Taking care of teeth with braces is considered delicate. Brushing of teeth should be observed because food particles may be trapped from the tiny spaces of braces. Using of floss threader should also be done every after eating. Insufficient cleaning may cause further oral problems like bad breath and stained teeth. Dental appointment should also be done regularly to correct some irregularities in loose wires and missing brackets. So you see, wearing braces isn’t as easy as one, two, and three. But for the sake of having a healthy and sweet smile, who would say no to brackets and wires?

The Benefits of

Exercise Venice Angela Morillo

People are less active nowadays, partly because technology has made our life easier which requires less physical work. We drive our cars and take public transport even in short distance. We wash our clothes with the use of washing machine instead of washing it with our hands. We entertain ourselves in front of television and computer screen instead of playing physical sports and games. Fewer people are doing manual work, and most have jobs that involve less physical effort. In effect, people today are having major illnesses such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. One of the best solutions in this problem is to exercise re g u l a r l y. Instead of just sitting during free time, we must do physical activities to burn some fats. People who do regular exercise have a lower risk on various chronic diseases. Given the overwhelming evidence, it seems obvious that we should all be physically active. It is medically proven that people who do regular exercise have up to 35% lower

risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, 20% lower risk to breast cancer and 30% lower risk of early death. Instead of lying down in bed or entertaining ourselves in front of the television and computers, why not do some physical activities with your friends and family members? To maintain physical and health stability, every individual should try to exercise regularly. Aside from its health benefits, research shows that exercise and other physical activities can boost self-esteem, can enhance the quality of sleep and can reduce risk of stress and depression. To some people, the easiest way to get moving is to make physical activities part of daily routine. Some of these activities are walking, jogging and cycling. The more we indulge ourselves with exercise, the better the health outcome. Exercise is the miracle we’ve always had. Whatever age you are in, there’s a strong evidence that being physically active can help you live a happier and healthier life. Therefore, to stay healthy and to have a longer life, we must not forget to exercise regularly.

Cell: Organic Ink Stem A medical breakthrough Extensive studies on jackfruit leaves and vine spinach fruits as ink By Freshny Dela Cruz Printing technology started in China during the Yuan dynasty. According to scholars, this is considered as one of China’s greatest contributions in the world. The birth of printing technology fueled the fast-paced civilization which opened to more possibilities. The invention of ink is indeed a turning point for the mankind. Inks are becoming a daily stuff for everyone because of the advent of printing technology. Try to visit schools, offices and stores—you would see the demands for ink for it is very useful in our day to day lives. With this in mind, the students of Advance Montessori Education Center of Isabela under Special Science Curriculum and Research subject developed an organic way of producing ink out of dried jackfruit leaves and vine spinach fruits. The study found out that the extracts of jackfruit leaves and vine spinach fruits are effective in formulating printer inks. Both plants are commonly found in the Philippines which make the study more feasible.

The fallen dried leaves were collected and were burned using a can and a lighter. Meanwhile, vine spinach fruits were pounded using mortar and pestle. The student-researchers prepared the mixture of ink using the experimental ratios of vine spinach extract and incinerated jackfruit leaves. After the experimentation, the results showed that the experimental inks were comparable and as effective as to the commercial one. The acceptability test also revealed that the three treatments were all acceptable in terms of color and odor. Furthermore, the studies have revealed that the ink from dried jackfruit leaves and spinach vine fruits is also effective for whiteboard ink. The study was a qualifier for the area wide Science Investigatory Project held at Delfin Albano High School, Cabagan Isabela. The researchers included Freshny dela Cruz, Jerwin Cunanan, James Cabico and Dennis Salada with Miss Jean Jarlo Zipagan as their adviser.

T

he world is powered by science and technology. Everything that surrounds us nowadays is a product of scientific studies and researches. While we dwell with a place engineered and governed by scientific fruits, we tend to realize how significant science is for our life Imagine a world without science? No computers, no cars nor vaccines for epidemic diseases. Wouldn’t life be extremely hard in this set-up? However, with science on our side, it becomes an entirely different story. Science is regarded as the heart of technology. It is the main factor behind the inventions that make our life easier and more enjoyable. Whenever we hear science, a lot of things may pop up in our minds. There were many things science has done to humanity. Most were regarded as positive while some are tagged as negatives. Nevertheless, we can’t deviate ourselves from using science because science is what makes the modern world. Science is indeed a big impact in our life. To make it clear how deeply science is interwoven with our lives, just try imagining a day without scientific progress. So, what has science done for us lately? CURE FOR DISEASES One way of viewing the deep connection of science to our life is

through medicinal field. Because of science, we can find cure for diseases that make people suffer. Aside from that, modern medicine such as vaccination had saved billions of life. ELECTRICITY Remember that electricity is an output of scientific studies. Science has progressively built up our knowledge of electricity, which today transmits our voices over telephone lines, powers our televisions, and keeps the world lighted. MODERN AGRICULTURE The way we cultivate the land and produce food for the table is improved by modern agriculture which is under science. Science also has transformed the way we eat today. Green revolution is the result of scientific studies which yields to a dramatic increase of the amount of crops harvested. MODE OF TRANSPORTATION The world becomes faster because of the various modes of transportation that were developed through science concepts. With these modes of transportation, we can easily reach places without exerting too much effort. Scientific knowledge had improved the quality of life at many different levels. We may not be aware of this, but for sure, disappearance of science could tear us all down.

In the past few years, we have heard of researches about stem cell therapy all over the news and perhaps we’ve wondered if it could help one of our family members who has serious health condition. Stem cell technology is a rapidly developing medical field. With further researches of scientist, geneticist and biologist, this scientific field is becoming more and more promising. Stem cells are considered as the body’s raw materials. These cells were studied in a laboratory and were used for specialized functions. Stem cells are very powerful for it functions as cell renewal or specialized cells. These cells have more distinct functions such as replacement of blood cells, brain cells, and heart tissues. Stem Cells were seen as a great potential in curing malignant and non-malignant diseases and genetically acquired conditions. The diverse functions of stem cell is the reason why scientists and health specialists have gone crazy about it. In order for us to understand this field further, here are the common questions and answers about stem cell: What makes stem cell interesting? Stem cell is considered interesting because of its regenerating functions.

A stem cell can mature into bones, tissues, nerves, muscles and even organs. Stem cell is a regenerative medicine which replaces diseased and unhealthy cells. Diseases like type 1 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, stroke, burns, cancer and osteoarthritis can also be cured with this medical breakthrough. What are the sources of stem cell? With the continuing quench of stem cell knowledge, scientists have discovered various sources of stem cell. The most common source of stem cell is thru umbilical cords. Umbilical cords contain amniotic acid which turns into specialized cells. Stem cells from umbilical cord is considered flexible in use which makes it more in demand in the medical market. The second source of stem cell is from the adult tissues. Adult stem cell can be deduced from adult’s bone marrow or fats. The only problem with adult stem cell is its limited function. The third source of stem cell is thru embryo. Embryonic stem cell is the most controversial among all because these cells are obtained from early staged human embryo. Because of its unusual source, many

Stem Cells were seen as a great potential in curing malignant and non-malignant diseases... are questioning its morality. How much would it cost to undergo stem cell treatment? The costs of stem cell treatment may cause a million in Philippine peso. This is because of the super advance technologies that are specially created for this purpose. In the Philippines, limited hospitals have offered the said treatment which also adds to the reasons of a pricey treatment. How would stem cell change the world of medicine? Many people from all over the world see light and hope to medical problems because of the advent of stem cell technology. This treatment could somehow save the world from diseases that are considered incurable. Few years from now, stem cell technology will be in its ripest form. The potential of this technology will soon be realized and it will surely change the ways of medicine and treatment in the world. Stem cell technology will never stop from flourishing. Little by little, this technology will conquer the world and will create massive changes. Thumbs up for this medical breakthrough!

This treatment could somehow save the world from diseases that are considered incurable.

The threat of Zika

Active Zika outbreaks have been reported in at least 57 countries, most of them in the Americas. The world is in terror after hearing the cases of Zika virus in Brazil last year. Health officials around the world are seriously studying the spread of Zika virus for it reaches different parts of the world in just a year. Zika is transmitted to people through the bite of infected female mosquitoes, scientifically known as Aedes aegypti mosquito, the same type of mosquito that spreads dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever disease. People infected with Zika virus may experience a mild fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain and fatigue that may last up to seven days. Meanwhile, 80% of the infected did not developed any symptoms during the early stage. The Zika virus is very dangerous especially to pregnant women. The virus itself causes birth defects, microcephaly, and other severe brain abnormalities in babies. It also causes Guillan-Barre syndrome, a very rare neurological disorder that may lead to complete paralysis. Because of this, pregnant women are advised not to travel in areas with recorded outbreaks. Based from the studies of World Health Organization, sexual

transmission may also cause transfer of virus therefore, safe sex was advised to people in the restricted areas. Active Zika outbreaks have been reported in at least 57 countries, most of them in the Americas. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Brazil has been the most affected country to date. The Zika virus is found in the tropical locales with large mosquito population. The virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947 in rhesus monkeys and was first identified in human in1952 at Uganda and Tanzania. According to Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Aedes mosquitos are found in all countries in the America except Canada and continental Chile, and the virus

will likely reach all countries and territories of the region where Aedes mosquitoes are found. As of the meantime, there is no found cure or treatment for Zika virus. Scientists are trying to develop a safe and effective vaccine for Zika, but the World Health Organization (WHO) had said earlier in 2016 that it would take 18 months to start clinical trials of potential preventive shots. Afterwards, it would take two to three years to make the vaccines available for widespread use. Efforts to control the spread of Zika virus focus on eliminating mosquito breeding sites and taking precautions against mosquito bites such as using insect repellants. Treating Zika virus remains a mystery up to these days. With no certain cure, Zika remains a threat to mankind.

A Fight for Bigger Funds

F

ilipinos from all walks of life are very fond of playing sports. Our kind of sports may vary from simple board game to the physical sports like basketball and soccer. Despite the fanaticism of Filipinos to sports, Philippine sports remain pauper in terms of funding. Few years ago, Philippines has been a powerhouse and benchmarking spot for Southeast Asian countries’ in terms of sports. Philippines had the best sports facilities and budget in Southeast Asia during the Marcos regime which made other country envious. Years later, we experienced drought in terms of sports as we competed internationally. It was even a hard time to win within the Southeast Asian region. According to some sports enthusiasts and analysts, this is not because of athletes’ potential but more of the results of insufficient funds given by the government. Based from the data of Philippine Sports Commission, the budget allocation for sports in the Philippines is significantly lower as compared to funds of our neighbouring countries like Thailand and Singapore who shine in sports arena. Our funds may somehow signify the importance and support given by the government. Logically speaking, budget appropriation is indeed a great impact in the success of Philippine sports. Budget may make or break our athletes. If funds are better, there is a greater chance that athletes will be given proper training and conditioning. One lacking factor is our sports facilities. Sports facilities used by our athletes are now considered old and obsolete. Some sports facilities need repair and some need overhauling. Problems in athletic gears and outfits are also noticeable. These kinds of facilities and equipment are somehow impeding the growth of athletes in the Philippines. Another problem is the proper conditioning of athletes. Athletes need medical assistance to ensure their health all the time. They also need vitamins and regular check up to be at their best. Due to minimal funds, athletes are not receiving the conditioning that they need. This results to poor performance of athletes in the sports arena. According to Jolly Gomez, PSC commissioner, the government should view sports as a way of nation-building and investment for the youth. It is high time for the government to respond to the demands of sports track. Massive changes are expected this 2016 as we change political administration. To sports people, the fight for a bigger fund is not yet out of the race. Having a larger budget is thought to be the key solution in these recurring problems. In this matter, we support the athletes and sports enthusiasts in their fight for bigger funds.

On the other hand, Valerie Denna and Jerico Aggabao of the Green Warriors and Nikkalen Magsanoc

and Jayric Laguinday of the White Panthers finished 2nd place in Latin and standard respectively. Ritchi May Velez and Aaron Jay Alfonso of the White panthers finished 3rd for the Latin dance while Victor Carino and Angel Castro of the Red Horsemen for standard. The 4th spot for Latin and Standard were covered by the Blue Dragon after the couple of John Lloyd Ariola and Claudia Lo Caluya, Vielmar Galap and Erika Cudal bested the dancers of Yellow Republic.

arning a medal in the Olympics was never easy. It requires years of rigid preparation and training to beat other athletic personalities around the world. This 2016, a powerful woman in the name of Hidilyn Diaz has become a famous name in the Philippines as she ended the 20-year Philippine drought in Olympic arena after winning a silver medal in 53-kg women’s weightlifting division at Rio Olympics. Like anybody else’s story, Hidilyn went through the difficulties of life and a rough childhood in Zamboanga. Coming from a poor family, it was not easy to rise from the hardships of life. Hidilyn, being the only girl in the siblings, was given many household chores and responsibilities. Nevertheless, she accepted all of these with an open arms for she really loves her family. She recalled that her favourite task when she was a child was to fetch for water. At just 11 years old, she had to walk 50 meters to fetch water from the community water pump and walk home lifting two big pails of water. She did this for years and it became part of her daily routine. Hidilyn was inspired by her cousin Allen Jayfrus Diaz who is a weightlifter himself. Soon after, she shifted her task from lifting pails of water to lifting gym barbells. Allen saw the potential of Hidilyn which provoked him to teach Hidilyn the basics of weightlifting. This has been the start of Hidilyn’s weightlifting journey. She worked really hard to be the best in her sports. Because of her perseverance, she was given scholarships in high school and college which saved her parents from school expenses. Because of her innate kindness, she shared her monthly stipend to her family. Diaz had her very first stint of

international sports competition in the Sea Games 2007. She did her best in the competition but didn’t hit a spot maybe because she was the youngest athlete in the said division. Losing in the Sea Games didn’t bring her down. On the other hand, it inspired her to work harder. In 2008, she was selected as a wild card entry in the summer Olympics which gave her the record as the very first Filipino weightlifter to compete in the said Olympics. Competing on 58-kg women’s division, 17 year old Diaz lifted 85kg in snatch, 107 in clean and jerk for a total of 192 kg breaking the Philippine record she herself set at the 2007 Sea Games. Although she only placed 2nd in the Summer Olympics, her overall performance was praised and

In her 2012 Beijing Olympics stint, she successfully lifted a personal best of 97 kg in snatch and placed 12th best among 19 weightlifters. However, her clean and jerk lift was unsuccessful after 3 attempts. She is one of the two weightlifters to end with an official result of ‘Did Not Finish’ (DNF) in the event. For Hidilyn, her unsuccessful journey in the Beijing Olympics turned her spirit down. She lose her faith in herself. She even thought of quitting because of too much disappointment. Because of the support of the people who believed

in her, she realized that she is not yet out of the race. She encouraged herself to be better. Hidilyn’s Rio Olympics was considered as her most prepared stint. She spent four years just to prepare for the said Olympics. Standing at 4’11, Hidilyn was able to snatch 1.66 times her weight. The strength that lifted a total of 200 kg—88 kg in snatch and 112 in clean and jerk. At last, all of her hard work and perseverance had paid off. Hidilyn earned a silver in her divison together with the gold medallist from Taiwan Hsu Shu- Ching and Yoon Jin Hee, the bronze medallist from South Korea. Hidilyn’s way to silver showed us a real and authentic journey of a dreamer who pushed herself to her limits. Her story served as a reminder t h a t working hard pays off. Indeed, Hidilyn Diaz is not just an Olympic medallist but an inspiration for all Filipino dreamers.

AMECI woodpusher Joel Acoba garnered a gold medal after unleashing his tactics and strategies in the chess game against the chess wizards of competing schools. Meanwhile, AMECI badminton team failed to bring home gold medals even after qualifying for the championship round under singles, doubles and mixed-doubles event. The smashers were pulverized by CAVRAA players during the championship round.

AMECI volleyboys suffered from a painful lost after losing the 3rd-5th round of the championship round against RSHS tossers. However, the AMECI cagers and kickers failed to advance in their respective sports events “The result of the recently concluded Interhigh Meet proves that AMECI can be levelled with the public schools in terms of sports. AMECI has been doing well for years in this sports competition but we will still find ways on how to improve the performances of our athletes,” said Frank Dy Batarao, AMECI PES coordinator.

AMECI spikers settle for 2nd place The AMECI men’s volleyball team upsurge from their last year’s standing after entering the volleyball championship round against the Regional Science High School (RSHS) tossers during the Inter-high school meet last September 1516. The team captain Reymart Tan together with the duo Jaden Romero and Alexis Pacada started out strong, defeating the defending champion of last year’s Interhigh, Fermeldy National High School (FNHS), in the first round of the tournament, 21-25, 25-15, 15-7. The second day of the tournament continued sturdy after winning back-to-back against the last year’s 2nd placer, Tumauini National High School (TNHS) which led to the team’s entry to championship, 25-19, 25-22. The AMECI volleyboys continued to rule the game against the RSHS tossers during the first and second set of the

championship round. On the other hand, in their third set the AMECI spikers suffered their first defeat after the players had gone tired in a continuous game against TNHS and RSHS. With their first defeat, the game was pushed to its fourth set putting pressure and emotional distress to AMECI volleyboys leading to their second lost. In the last set, the tension was intensified as the crowd cheered and shouted for the two competing teams trying to score 15 in the decision round. RSHS managed to win the game relegating the AMECI volleyboys to 2nd place. “Of course, we wanted to win the championship round but the fact that their performances had improved is enough as of now. I am hopeful that next year, we would reap the gold for men’s volleyball,” said Darrell RED BLOCK. Olympic Gold: Unreachable? “Efforts should be paid off. After all, efforts are product of passion and determination.” -Rohann Vohn Shadimm I was captivated by this quote and started to think if efforts are really meant to be paid off. Series of thoughts registered in my mind and began to wonder the story of the Rio Olympics 2016. Philippines first sent athletes to compete at the Olympics in 1924, making it the first country to compete and win a medal in Southeast Asia. The country competed every Summer Olympics since then except when they participated in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics and 1940 before the Olympics was ultimately cancelled due to the World War II outbreak. From then on, Philippines won 10 medals in which three are silver and seven bronze. In 92 years of being part of the athletic competition, we failed to have a gold medal. Why is it that the Philippines have a hard time getting Olympic gold medals? Filipinos are naturally skilled and talented. It is innate for us to excel in various field especially when we are determined to achieve it. We are passionate and that makes us strong and hopeful despite of the problems that we are experiencing. Based from my observation, here are some of the problems why it is difficult for us to attain medals: Weak Foundation or Grassroots of Athletes Filipinos have mny good qualities but I can also say that there are bad ones. Inconsistency is the number one lacking of our athletes. We are bounded of our fatalism or that “bahala na” mentality. We keep on rushing things forgetting that preparation is a mut. Because of this, we keep of producing half-baked

performances. O t h e r countries inculcate the significance of founding goals and priorities to their citizens when they are still young because they believe in a theory which states that human beings are at their best or peak of development when they are still young. This is the reason why their athletes are trained at a very young age. They train their young athletes consistently to achieve their maximum potentials and excel on different fields that they are aiming to, giving them the advantage and a lot of time for preparations. Sports as neglected business of the Government In the last Rio Olympics, USA topped the medal table with 121, followed by China, 70 and Great Britain in the third spot with 67 medals. Philippines with 1 silver medal landed at rank 69 out of 207 nations competed. See the comparison? See the gap? USA has 27 large sports facilities with numerous small one per state, China has 18 sports dome and 67 small sports facilities and athletic camps while Philippines has recorded few sports complex with incomplete facilities. We can say that this data alone speak that our government are not prioritizing sports as front row project and program. It is now high time for the government to take actions regarding the greatest concerns in the field of sports arena. Little by little, we could achieve our goals of having gold in the Olympics as long as the government and athletes do their part. In the end, nothing is unreachable with a clear vision.

In 92 years of being part of the athletic competition, we failed to have a gold medal.
