THE MAN BEHIND THE RAGE...

THE MAN WHO REDEFINED THE HORROR GENRE...

DANNY BOYLE The Master Mind Of 28 Days Later... Danny Boyle felt that the notion of the living dead wanting to eat peoples’ brains was outdated. One of the original factors behind zombie movies was a fear of nuclear power and its possible effects on people.Boyle concluded that one of the biggest fears in modern society is fear of disease, especially a viral apocalypse, such as Ebola or Marburg. Boyle were specifically inspired by such incidents as anthrax and bio-terrorism scares in London and the spread of mad cow disease and footand-mouth disease in the UK past time.

Another aspect of rendering the zombie movie more contemporary was the idea that the virus didn’t necessarily affect people physically (it doesn’t kill them as in traditional zombie movies)Danny Boyle felt that the idea that the virus renders people zombie-like due to uncontrollable rage was a good metaphor for the contemporary phenomenon of social rage (such as road rage, air rage, hospital rage, etc). They liked the idea that the virus simply amplifies something already in man and woman, rather than turning them into something entirely Other, as is the traditional route in zombie movies.

THE THOUGHTS BEHIND THE RAGE...

BOYLE’S RAGE FOR THOUGHT RES: Your new film, 28 Days Later, seems to mix a lot of genres, from zombie and horror flicks to post-apocalyptic and science fiction themes. What references did you draw on? Boyle: With all of the films that we’ve done, we try and take a genre and mess with it a bit. We love doing that.So the zombie fans who show up for this are not just going to see a gore-fest zombie film. They will get something in addition, and I think thats a great dynamic really. RES: The virus in the film is carried in the blood. Is there a connection to AIDS? Boyle: You can’t help thinking of that. Obviously, it’s not based on AIDS; it’s more like Ebola. There’s a book called The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston, which we read. It’s about the guy who carried Ebola from Africa to Washington. It’s an airport kind of page-turner, but it’s phenomenal what happens. And the manifestation of the disease in the film, the sickness, is all based on Ebola with a bit of rabies, peared, people have had this sensitivity about the smallest drop of blood.

RES: What elements of visual style were discussed prior to filming? Boyle: We wanted it to feel different in texture from normal film. Because it is an apocalypse, you can use a new different hue, because nobody knows what things will look like if everybody is killed? RES: What is your next film? Boyle: Its a thing called Millions, by a writer called Frank Cottrell Boyce. It sounds crushingly dull as it’s about the changeover in the U.K. from the Pound Sterling to the Euro. This film supposes it is going to happen on one particular weekend. So the story is the opportunity on this one weekend that the changeover gives to criminals, and obviously filmmakers. So it is not as crushingly dull as it sounds! I just sell it that way so people’s expectations will be very low. a young lads and really, about saying goodbye to things.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE RAGE...

RAGING MAD COW DISEASE... Mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform en-

cephalopathy (BSE), is a transmissible, slowly progressive, degenerative, and fatal disease affecting the central nervous system of adult cattle. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has tested hundreds of thousands of cattle for BSE. A human version of mad cow disease called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is believed to be caused by eating beef products contaminated with central nervous system tissue, such as brain and spinal cord, from cattle infected with mad cow disease. For this reason, the USDA requires that all brain and spinal cord materials be removed from high-risk cattle -- older cattle, animals that are unable to walk, and any animal that shows any signs of a neurological problem. These cow products do not enter the U.S. food supply. The USDA believes this practice effectively safeguards U.S. public health from vCJD.

According to the CDC, four deaths from vCJD have been identified in the U.S. However, it’s believed those cases were caused by consumption of meat outside the U.S. It is important to clarify the differences between variant CJD and another form of the disease, referred to as classic or sporadic CJD. Classic CJD has no known cause and occurs each year at a rate of one to two cases per 1 million people throughout the world, including in the U.S. and countries where mad cow disease has never occurred. It is not linked to eating nerve tissue from mad cow disease-affected cattle -- both vegetarians and meat eaters have died from classic CJD. CJD most commonly affects people over 65 and is usually fatal within six months from onset of symptoms.

THE REAL HORROR OF THE RAGE..

CANNIBAL LECTER STRIKES IN FLORIDA... America is famous for its gun violence, but lately

the nation’s crime headlines have been dominated by tales of felons using their fangs. The latest incident occurred in Florida on Wednesday night, when police used Tasers to subdue a naked man accused of taking a bite out of another man’s arm. The suspect, Charles Baker, 26, didn’t have long to chew on his prey before cops came running. A Manatee County sheriff ’s office report said the victim, Jeffery Blake, 48, lost no flesh beyond a chunk from his left biceps. One officer shot the suspect with a Taser, but he pulled the probes out. Police were able to subdue Baker after another officer shot him, once again with a Taser.

Florida hardly has a monopoly on criminal cannibalism in America these days. Maryland university student Alexander Kinyua was indicted last week on charges of murdering a 37-year-old man and eating his heart and part of his brain. Kinyua had a history of disturbing internet writings and had been accused in a separate assault at his school, Morgan State University, earlier in the month. The suspect in the most recent attack, Charles Baker, was enraged when Jeffery Blake, 48, answered the door at Baker’s girlfriend’s home, police said. In what police described as an intoxicated fit, Baker tore off his clothes, threw furniture and attacked Blake with his teeth, tearing flesh from his biceps. Baker was taken to the hospital and treated before being taken to jail. The victim’s condition was unknown.
