ATLAMPA

Mexico City

1

Atlampa is a very deteriorated zone that used to be part of the city centre, where industrial development took place during the 1980’s. However, with the city growth, this area became insecure and abandoned. The main purpose of the project was to improve the public and private spaces, including good quality housing and green areas to the site, providing the town with a new fresh vibrant environment. LOCATION: Atlampa, Mexico City. AREA: 800,000 m2 DATE: Aug - Dec 2014 TYPE: Urban Resdesign

Atlampa redevelopment was mainly focused in the creation of new green areas, together with gathering points, provinding locals with services missing in the site, such as education and sports spaces, offices, commerce, among others. In addition, running and bycicle tracks were designed willing to become a denotator for interaction between locals. The key point for this masterplan was the improvement done to housing typologies, where the concept of joined patios, responded to a flow path, allowing the user experience a permeable environment. Six urban centers, with different roles, connected the entire area.

Through the implementation of the urban centers, the aim was to become a new economic area. In order to achieve this, Transfer Development Rights were needed to obtain enough area for housing development. To the residential area with less levels built than the allowed ones by the law, we suggested to buy their leftover m2. Also, for the green area expected growth, as none of their construction levels were going to be used, the total amount of land was directly transfered to office and housing projects. This way, the constructive utilization of the area was perfectly planned and distributed.

The intervened site was strategically chosen due to a heritage building located in the area that needed to be preserved. The old lumberyard, which was the previous building’s use, was considered by locals as part of their identity, perhaps urging for its restoration. Therefore, the objective of the project was to give a second use to it by respecting the previous structure and masonry perimeter walls.

The concept was attached to the idea of providing an identity element to the community, so a cultural center was perfect for the zone. The implementation of diverse activities not only indoor, but outdoor, located in a proposed new green area adjacent to the property, were part of the plan. The cultural center’s aim was to attract locals and become one of the six urban centers that connected Atlampa.

CHAPULTEPEC URBAN CORRIDOR Mexico city

Chapultepec is one of the most important avenues of the city, as well as one of the most conflictive. By connecting two landmarks, the objective of the project was to generate a public space that contributed not only to the image of the city, but also to develop diverse housing typologies, commerce, pedestrian paths, green open areas and efficient routes of transportation. LOCATION: Chapultepec Avenue, Mexico City. AREA: 1.5 km DATE: Jan-May 2015 TYPE: Urban Redesign

LOCATION

Located in the center of the city, having very low density willing to increase it, the challenge was to give order to Chapultepec, by redifining the interaction between three key points along this avenue. The corridor’s aim was to relate the locals and existing retail stores with proposed green areas and commerce, as well as pedestrians paths and car routes, in order to provide a better quality of space and diversity in uses. The key point would be used as strategic public transport stops, concentrating activities in those areas. CHAPULTEPEC URBAN CORRIDOR l Mexico

CONCEPT

1

+

Several previous studies were made before delivering a proposal. The amount of people (1) and the areas occupied by them, the economically developed zones (2), as well as the avenues and streets, and their traffic flow (3), influenced the entire project. For instance, the lack of services in this area detonated the emergence of smaller projects. However, the leading concept for this intervention was the connectivity between the city’s existing infrastructure, land uses and citizens activities. These three elements connected would result in the proposed urban corridor.

As part of the implementation of the corridor, an urban redesign of the blocks was made. Approximately 30 to 40 % was left as green area, using it as pedestrian streets, allowing permeability within blocks (A). Chapultepec Corridor was though in three levels: ground level destined for bus transit, first level occupied by the light rail and second level working very similar as High Line Park in New York (B).

A “Mercado”, destined for the locals and the transitory pedestrians was one of the winning proposals. Chapultepec has only two market places within its boundaries, urging for the supply for this need. Made out of reused containers, the Mercado follows an open area concept. Located at the center of the corridor, the two leveled project responds to a sustainable concept, adding the fact that green roofs can be used to harvest and offer fresh products. FARMERS MARKET New Mexico, United States

Model by Angie Díaz

In an old town near Albuquerque, the lack of water has been a constant problem since citizens have memory. Trying to incorporate the antique tecnique of “acequias”, taking into consideration the division of the town by the Gallinas River, the building merges two uses: single housing and commerce. Both spaces, the residence and the market, are connected one another by the acequia that flows from the inside of the house into the farmers market, stating clearly the concept of the entire project: transition. LOCATION: Las Vegas, New Mexico AREA: 656 m2 DATE: Jan-May 2013 TYPE: Urban Inclusion

SOURCES OF WATER l Rivers ACEQUIA MADRE LAS VEGAS OTHER ACEQUIAS

LOCATED IN THE COUNTY OF SAN MIGUEL, NM, IT IS AN OLD CITY ONCE DIVIDED BY A RIVER: THE OLD TOWN (WEST) AND THE NEW TOWN (EAST ).

This old town was looking for an urban detonator that by mimicking with the environment, attracted new users, as well as existing ones, to the site. The best option to achieve this was to impulse their economy by providing a space where they could sell what they harvested. A farmers market was the best option.

THE COUNTY FARMERS MARKET SEMILLA NATURAL FOODS LUDI’S FOODMARKET

The design was thought to be simple as possible. A three volume building, divided by a ditch, simulating an acequia, and working as an air cooling system was the proposal for this project. The concept came along with materials selection, stating clearly the idea of tectonic vs. stereotomic and the transition between them.

The building’s height respected the existing skyline. The market faces the street, while the residential part remains at the back to keep the privacy. An alley connects both uses, being divided by the “acequia”, flowing from second level of the house into the farmers market, ending at the ground level, next to the entrance.

FUENCARRAL CORRIDOR Madrid, Spain

Fuencarral is a very well-known street in Madrid, not just because of its pedestrian character, but also its commercial one. However, despite the fact that commerce attracts large amounts of people, this place has become a short permanence area. The purpose of the redesign is to improve the quality of spaces to provide Madrid citizens with a long permanece street, that keeps connecting during the day north and south “barrios through diverse interventions. LOCATION: Fuencarral St., Barrio Justicia, Madrid. AREA: 700m DATE: Jan-May 2014 TYPE: Urban Redesign

Located at the Gran VĂa, in the center of the city, Fuencarral is a street that lacks of activities to make people stay longer, the abundance of this site are the fashion shops. The purpose of pedestrianizing this street was because of the strong presence of commerce along it. However, due to this fact, Fuencarral has become a short permanence area. Before intervening it, a profound analysis was done in terms of blocks, heights, types of retail stores, among others, throwing important data for the proposals.

FUENCARRAL CORRIDOR l Spain

About 70% of Fuencarral is destined for pedestrians, while the rest is for car use. With this information, the zones with most of concentration of people, nodes, highlighted by themselves. There are about 3 critical hours where it is impossible to walk normally without bumping into other pedestrians, while the rest of the day the streets remains pretty much arid. By relocating most visited retail stores in places with less pedestrian flow, traffic nodes would be solved.

ANGÉLICA DAZ l Portfolio 2015

As part of the interventions planned to be done to Fuencarral, the addition of green areas and street furniture was the most appropiate. Placed centrally along the street, helped to articulate circulation and space, bringing order and, at the same time, adding a natural element to the zone. This would also support Fuencarral’s image and favor the development for other activities related to this new areas.

FUENCARRAL CORRIDOR l Spain

In so compact and densely built cities like Madrid, it is very hard to find green spaces within the urban landscape. The aim of this proposal is not only to provide citizens with a greener street, but to create spaces that can have a second use and become comfortable for the user to keep Fuencarral alive during the entire day. Analyzing ages, gender, social status and styles is very important; the later helps to launch projects that fit and will be well accepted by the users, making the revival of the area easier.

CHAOS TO SERENITY: The objective of this project was to generate an innovative form by using the asigned machine from the Fab Lab: the vaccum former. The designed panel would be ideally used as building’s façade, similar to a second skin. With the use of the CNC router, the heat gun and the vaccum former the model was achieved. LOCATION: Albuquerque, New Mexico. AREA: 1.40 m x 1.00 m DATE: Jan-May 2013 TYPE: FAB LAB

WALL PANEL l United States

The concept for this project started from a free flowing form which varied from one side to the other. The left end started aggressively curved while the right end remained smooth. A designed pattern would follow the mold’s variations by gradually growing its openings. The mold (form) was CNC routed to then be used for overlapping styrene layers, already cut with the aformentioned pattern, to go directly to the vaccum former. After heating, styrene layers became one and the mold’s texture remained in a third plane.
