“My photography collection was about the Cambodian people’s daily lifestyles, which are always burdened,” said Sophal. The title of the collection refers to Sophal’s idea that people from all backgrounds are constantly struggling to “hang on” to life. “Some are lucky enough to be able to do their favourite job, some would prefer a higher salary, some just find a job for a living. But they will all face difficulties in their lives,” she said. As the winner, Sophal will receive the Hope Françoise Demulder Award and a cash prize of €2,000 ($2,720) supported by the Un Declic Contre Une Claque Association in Paris, France. She will also receive a Canon Powershot S110 camera. Sophal said she has no plans yet as to how to spend the grant money, but added that her camera needs a new lens and that she may well buy one in http://www.phnompenhpost.com/lifestyle/cambodian-photographer-comes-out-top-angkor

Francoise Callier, who is curating the festival. “We’ll have around 130 photographers and this year the submissions came from 75 countries which is really good – it increases every year.” She adds that the photographers can be from anywhere, but the work has to tell a story. Callier is particularly excited about a collection by London-based photographer Martin Usborne, who will be exhibiting his series Mute: The Silence of Dogs in Cars at the McDermott Gallery. Usborne, whose work over the years has featured in the Sunday Times magazine and Time magazine and has been exhibited at London’s National Portrait Gallery, was inspired by childhood angst-ridden memories of being left in a car. “I don’t know when or where or for how long, possibly at the age of four, perhaps outside a supermarket, probably for fifteen minutes only,” his press http://www.phnompenhpost.com/siem-reap-insider/carrie-fisher’s-fake-baby-exposed

Now in its ninth year, the Angkor Photo Festival (APF) has become a globally recognised photo festival while maintaining its strong connection to the local community. As APF program director since 2007, Françoise Callier has overseen the festival’s evolution for seven of its nine years. We spoke with Callier to find out more about the spirit of the festival and where it’s headed.

Françoise Callier: It was actually by accident. In 2006, APF asked if I would agree to show my series of children’s books, with Photoshop montages, on Children’s Day. Callier: I’m in charge of the entire program, which includes the exhibitions and slideshows and the editing of the content. The festival does not have a fixed theme, and this year I went through all the 1,200 submissions we received from 75 countries. Also, I select the two invited guest curators, one from Asia, and one from the West. How will this year’s festival differ from those before it? Callier: Our program remains the same, with a series of exhibitions and slideshows, but every year there are more and more photographers, editors and journalists coming to join us from all over Asia and the rest of the world. Angkor Imagery Joanna Wolfarth The 9th Angkor Photo Festival runs from Nov. 23 to 30 at venues across Siem Reap. It is the longest running photo festival in Southeast Asia and is showcasing the work of more than 130 photographers from around the world, over half of whom are from the region. Work will be on display at a number of Siem Reap venues including Hotel 1961, the McDermott Gallery, Raffles Grand Hotel D’Angkor and Shinta Mani. There will also be free digital slideshows projected every evening at FCC. The guest curators of the festival are Shahidul Alam, the director of Chobi Mela photo festival in Bangladesh, and JeanFrançois Leroy, the director of the Visa pour l’Image festival in France. The results will be on show at the Children’s Day showcase at Shinta Mani hotel on Nov. 28. “This year it will be easier for the public to join us. We are also staging a retrospective of all the work from the Children’s Workshops from the last eight years and the slideshow that night will be selected with children in mind, with photographs which they can enjoy, says Lim. eXposition L’abattoir Photographies de dominique delpoux

I was privileged to attend the Angkor Photo Festival in November 2011 and one of my photo essays The Possessed of Mira Datar was featured at the festival. It was an absolute delightful experience to be part of such an event, and the gracious hospitality of Francoise Callier and Jean-Yves Navel was instrumental in making it such success. I have no doubt that the festival in November 2013 will equally be as wonderful.

Created in 2005, the Angkor Photo Festival is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. Held every year in the bustling town of Siem Reap, Cambodia, the weeklong festival features exhibitions, slideshows, and other activities. All events are free-of-charge and open to the public, and no prior registration is required to attend. The Angkor Photo Festival seeks to showcase and highlight top photography on an international stage, with a unique focus on discovering new talent, especially from Asia. It also acts as an accessible, inclusive platform for photography professionals to meet and interact. The strong educational goals of the Angkor Photo Festival set it apart from other photography events. The free Angkor Photo Workshops for emerging Asian photographers are conducted by renowned photographers for specially selected participants, and the festival operates its own outreach programme – the Anjali Children’s Photo Workshops for children of Anjali House.

© Jean-François Mutzig / Bios Photo OF ELEPHANTS AND MEN – ASIA
