very year, eyes are averted from the temples of Siem Reap and instead focus on the hundreds of powerful images that transform the city into an artistic hub. Now in its 10th year, Angkor Photo Festival and Workshops has evolved in leaps and bounds since its humble beginnings in 2005. As the brainchild of founding photographers, Jean-Yves Navel, Roland Eng and Gary Knight, the aim was to provide a series of workshops and exhibitions to give back to the community. What began as a small round of photos showcased in small pockets of the city, coupled with a few workshops, has snowballed into one of Southeast Asia’s biggest photographic festivals. And today, it attracts photographers from across the globe as well as providing a platform for home-grown talent to exhibit their work. Festival organiser Jessica Lim says, “As the longest-running international photo event in Southeast Asia, Siem Reap transforms into the photography hub of Asia every November. We’re glad that the thousands of visitors who come to the city to visit the magnificent temples of Angkor are also able to join in our events, as everything is free and open to the public.” As well as attracting artists from the global stage, some of Cambodia’s most talented photographers are set to show the world their talents, including Kim Hak, who is exhibiting his thought-provoking work this year. Sophal Neak and Meng Kimlong’s work will also be projected during the eight-day festival. Lim adds, “As an international festival, this is a great place for Cambodian photographers to come meet their peers from the rest of the world, to interact and discuss and to expose themselves to a professional level of photography.” Angkor Photo Festival runs from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6. tbilisi photo festival (georgia / web pdf - sep 2014)

International Photography Festival Fifth Edition October 1 - 5, 2014 Tbilisi, Georgia The Tbilisi Photo Festival celebrates its fifth anniversary this year by maintaining its focus on urgent contemporary themes affecting the region while showcasing important historical rediscoveries. Amid the continuing conflict in Ukraine, the festival presents new work by leading Polish documentary photographer Justyna Mielnikiewicz – a series of powerful images of how life is lived surrounded by the current turmoil.

THE TBILISI PHOTO FESTIVAL brings the best of world photography to the heart of the Caucasus, the ancient crossroads of Europe and Asia. Continuing its tradition of creative diversity, on show this year is work from Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Italy and Belgium. The festival also presents the best photography from the Caucasus and the surrounding region to the world. This year it has a distinct Polish flavour, with Justyna Mielnikiewicz’s new exhibition on Ukraine, a lecture on contemporary photography in Poland by leading Warsaw-based curator Adam Mazur, and the open-air projection of work by photographers from the renowned Poland-based Sputnik collective

Marking the 60th anniversary of Magnum co-founder Robert Capa’s death, the festival is proud to display the remarkable photographs that Capa took during a his 1947 trip to Georgia with author John Steinbeck. Also on show are Davide Monteleone’s pictures exploring post-war identity in Chechnya, and images from a hidden history of photography in Soviet-era Georgia by Rezo Kezeli and Boris Shaverdyan.

they were found to be images by Rezo Kezeli dating from the 1940s to the 1970s. Kezeli (1925-1988) took pictures of the world around him: himself, his friends, how they lived and where they went. In doing so, he demonstrated a vision that was full of lightness and joy, totally free of the prevailing Communist dogmas of the time which demanded that art be in service to state ideology. His work is an outstanding discovery that shows how Soviet-era Georgian photography, despite being under pressure to serve the needs of propaganda, could also sometimes nurture creative eyewitnesses who transcended the norms of their time.

at the annual Night of Photography, the festival’s showpiece nocturnal event in Tbilisi’s atmospheric Old Town. This is the Tbilisi Photo Festival’s second major event marking its fifth anniversary this year. In May, the month in which the festival was held in previous years, the exhibition The Real World by the renowned British Magnum photographer Martin Parr and Lithuanian Rimaldas Viksraitis, who won the Arles Festival discovery prize in 2009, was held in Tbilisi. It was the first time that Parr’s work has been exhibited in Georgia and was accompanied by workshops for people with disabilities mentored by Rimaldas Viksraitis.

A Ukraine Runs Through It by Justyna Mielnikiewicz October 1-10 The crisis in Ukraine that began with mass demonstrations and the ousting of a president and intensified with the annexation of Crimea and armed clashes in the east of the country has left a mark on all its people’s lives, whichever side they are on. This year, Tbilisi-based Polish photographer Justyna Mielnikiewicz made a series of visits to Ukraine to explore the human impact of these political and military conflicts that have left some 3,000 people dead. Using the Dniepr river that runs through the country as a symbolic dividing line between Ukraine’s east and west, she sought to investigate one of the crucial questions lying beneath the current dispute: what does it mean to be Ukrainian?

They travelled to Ukraine but were most intrigued to visit Georgia after hearing Russians’ description of the Caucasus republic as a kind of Soviet paradise-onearth of relative freedom and abundance. The images that Capa brought back of Tbilisi landscapes and markets, religious services, sporting events and Georgian social rituals illustrated Steinbeck’s book A Russian Journal. Offering a unique human insight into life in a corner of Moscow’s empire that was rarely seen in the west during communism, they also show how Georgian life at the time differed from the perceived image of Soviet severity and gloom during Stalin’s rule.

Spasibo

by Davide Monteleone October 4-18 Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award Winner 2013 The disturbed and sometimes disturbing ‘normality’ of life after the wars in the Russian republic of Chechnya, with its atmosphere of fear, repression and suppressed violence, is the subject of Italian photographer Davide Monteleone’s portfolio Spasibo. Monteleone, whose work has won him numerous prestigious international prizes, including the 2013 Carmignac Gestion photojournalism award and three World Press Photo awards, has focused on Russia and its peoples for more than a decade. Spasibo looks at the complexities and tensions beneath the façade of local strongman ruler Ramzam Kadyrov regime’s ‘Chechenisation’ project and its mixture of traditional culture, Islam and professed fealty to Moscow, and questions what Chechen identity means after the republic’s battles for independence were defeated.

Boris Shaverdyan - Pioneer of Georgian Conceptual Photography October 4-18

This exhibition of work by Boris Shaverdyan from the late 1980s, just before the collapse of the Soviet empire, explores a little-known but highly significant part of the history of Georgian photography. Conceptual photography at the time was a novel form of expression in the Soviet republics, and Shaverdyan became one of its pioneers. Born in Tbilisi in 1956, he combined images and text in a way that examined the role of the individual in the Communist state – an adventurous approach that few dared to attempt even in the final years of the Kremlin’s rule. On display at the festival as well as his photographs are seven of his idiosyncratic home-made albums of pictures and text.

At first, no one knew who took them, but a few years ago they were found to be images by Rezo Kezeli dating from the 1940s to the 1970s. Kezeli (1925-1988) took pictures of the world around him: himself, his friends, how they lived and where they went. His work is an outstanding discovery that shows how Soviet-era Georgian photography, despite being under pressure to serve the needs of propaganda, could also sometimes nurture creative eyewitnesses who transcended the norms of their time.

Night of Photography October 4

The highlight of the fifth edition of the festival, as in previous years, is the Night of Photography, when the streets and squares of Tbilisi’s Old Town are lit up after dark with some of the most inspired and intriguing images from around the world projected on giant screens on café terraces. The festival’s partnership with National Geographic Georgia continues this year with work from some of the world’s most important photographers and agencies, including this year’s World Press Photo prize winner John Stanmeyer from VII Agency, Putin’s Party by Thomas Dworzak of Magnum and Damascus: War and Peace by Andrea Bruce of Noor. Ukrainian photographers also offer their reflections on the crisis in their homeland, including Andrei Lomakin’s Maidan series and Oksana Yushko’s pictures from Yalta (Butterfly Effect), alongside images that will be sent direct to the festival from eastern Ukraine by Roman Pilipey

and talented Russian photographer Maria Tourchenkova with her slideshow People’s Republic of Chaos. From the photo agency Metrography, Iraqi photographers show their projects on the recent dramatic events in Kurdistan. There is also Misha Friedman from Cosmos Agency with his recent project about Russians’ everyday experience of graft, Is Corruption in Russia’s DNA?, and a special focus on young German documentary photographers including Andreas Meichsner, Uwe H. Martin, Merlin Nadj-Torma and Wolfgang Müller. For the first time this year, the festival will feature a selection from Cambodia’s Angkor Photo Festival, including work by Moises Saman from Magnum documenting Syrian refugees and Agence VU’s Gael Turine on India’s ‘Fence of Shame’ to prevent illegal immigration. And finally, as always, there will be selections by young emerging photographers from Georgia and the South Caucasus.

Angkor Photo Festival is the longest running photo festival in Southeast Asia. From 29th November to 6th December this year, they will host and

celebrate their 10th edition. During a recent trip to China, I spent considerable time with Francoise Callier, Angkor’s Programme Coordinator since 2007. We spoke at length about photography and the festival, behind-the-scenes and front. Here are some highlights as shared in a post-trip interview.

Thank you for your time Francoise. Please introduce yourself and your role at Angkor Photo Festival. I’m Belgian, and have been living in Paris since 1983. From 1983-1998, I worked at 2eBureau, directed by Sylvie Grumbach. I was the photographer’s agent of photographers such as Helmut Newton, Jean-Paul Goude, Max Vadukul and more. Following this, from 1990 to 1998, I was doing press promotion at 2eBureau for “Visa pour l’Image – Perpignan”. During this time, for three years, I was also the French correspondent for Corbis, in charge of filling the archive. I’ve been the programme coordinator of the Angkor Photo Festival from 2007 till today, and am also involved in Anjali House, a shelter for 100 underprivileged children of Siem Reap founded by the festival in 2005. Anjali House is involved with the festival through the “Anjali Photo Workshops”, and during the year I’m involved with doing editing with them for books, slideshows and exhibitions of the kids work. Thanks to the tutors volunteering their time, some of the kids have become really good at photography.

This year Angkor Photo Festival celebrates its 10th Anniversary. Congratulations! A decade is a long time. What’s the secret? It isn’t really a secret. We have a team who are all very committed to seeing the Angkor Photo Festival realised year after year. We also always get a lot of positive feedback from photographers and visitors that let us know that they want a platform like this, and that it has been beneficial for them.

What has changed since the Festival was first founded? Or is it still the same? Initially the festival was under different management, and the way the festival is right now has been since around 2008. Since then, there hasn’t been any major changes. Of course the festival is growing, but the friendly atmosphere remains, which is very important for us. One new thing added along the way is the Blowup Angkor, a public event initiated by the Blindboys, and also for the past two years, we have started to include more structured portfolios reviews and afternoon sessions where photographers can talk about their new books or make screenings of their last projects. This is all based on feedback from photographers on what is useful for them. Another thing is that we are seeing a lot more submissions to the festival from Asian photographers, and applications to the workshops than when we first started.

Can you tell us a bit about the process behind Angkor’s program and exhibition curation over the years? In the first quarter of the year, we announce an open call for submissions – in 2013, we received 1300 submissions from 75 countries. Besides that, I spend a lot of time researching on the Internet for more work, and I also try to contact some photographers who I have known and admired for a long time. And some of my friends whose professional expertise I trust have sent me recommendations to great stories.

What do you think are some of the biggest achievements of Angkor Photo Festival? And likewise regrets over the years? What is really satisfying is when we are able to help expose the work of emergent photographers in other countries, festivals and galleries. Also, every year we have a great group of students from the Angkor Photo Workshops, and it is wonderful to see the alumni of the workshops succeed in their careers after they’ve been with us.

And likewise, what is the funniest thing that has happened at Angkor Photo Festival? It is hard to remember, but the monsoon floods in 2011 was very bad in Siem Reap and for many days the team had to swim to the office. There were frogs and fishes in the office too when it was flooded.

What about the most memorable guest? It is very difficult to say, we’ve had so many great visitors and guests. Perhaps Roger Ballen, who made a very memorable presentation during one of the evening projections. Also, Phillip Jones Griffiths, who got very involved when he was here. He contributed and helped us out a lot especially at the workshops.

Tell us something we might not know about Angkor Photo Festival. That it’s an enormous challenge to organize the festival with a team of only 3 people. Apart from me, there’s Jean-Yves Navel, founder and director and Jessica Lim, Asia coordinator. We are very firm on keeping all events and our call for submissions free-of-charge for all participants and visitors, and so we are reliant on finding other sources of funding for the festival.

I know audiences from Angkor Photo Festival travel to PhotoPhnomPenh Festival which happens immediately after. Do both festivals work closely to ensure different content and programming is offered? We are totally separated, and each of the festivals has it’s own area of speciality.

There are more Festivals now popping up across Southeast Asia. How do you see Angkor’s position and relevance in this growing circuit of Festivals? Having more festivals in the region hopefully means that more photographers can benefit because they will have more platforms to show their work, and also it will be good for the general industry in the region because it creates more awareness and exposure. We have been around the longest in Southeast Asia and we will keep to our strengths, and also it would be nice to have interesting collaborations and sharing with other festivals.

Now that there are

more platforms and ways for photographers to share their work, it is important for us to ensure at the same time that young and emerging photographers have access to learning and improving their photography through our workshops. http://invisiblephotographer.asia/2014/02/08/interview-francoisecallier-angkorfest/ I’ve been to Angkor before. What was nice was the relaxed atmosphere

Page 2 sur 5 and the ease in which someone new could meet people. It felt small and cosy. Is that a conscious effort and can a festival get too big?

That is great you noticed that because yes it’s a conscious effort, we want everyone to be able to feel like they can meet and talk with everybody there. It is better to form friendships than to just make contacts. If the festival gets too big, it might lose its original spirit and we want to be able to remain close to all the photographers so that we can get to know them, and to be able to help them better.

What are the pros and cons of hosting the festival in Siem Reap? Only good things – it is a small town, easy for visitors to get around to all our venues, very relaxed, cheap and affordable for photographers to spend time here compared to going to America or Europe, and with a lot of meeting places and sightseeing to do if you have the time to visit the temples.

Looking towards the future, how do you see Photo Festivals in general, and Angkor specifically, evolving if at all – in terms of function and meaning? All photo festivals have their own mission and objectives, which will of course change over time depending on their environment and what their aim is. For us, we have been evolving in an organic way, based on feedback on what photographers need when they are here, and also based on how we can keep contributing in our own way to photography in the region. For the 10th Edition, we are taking a good look again at our mission to make sure that we are on the right track. For example, after all these years we now have a growing group of alumni from the workshops who return to participate and be a part of our events. They have created a cycle of giving back and this is something that we want to nurture and encourage.

The Angkor Workshops have established a reputation for churning out a healthy rate of young working photographers in the region. It appears to be a key component of Angkor’s success wouldn’t you agree? It is not just a key component but the heart of the festival. It is such a major part of who we are, how we started, and what we want to do. A lot of them come back every year and the festival has become a meeting place for them to see each other, and it means we all feel like a part of a big family. They are also seeing each other grow and develop in their own photography over the years, helping each other, collaborating on projects. Photographers are our best ambassadors, it means a lot to us that they feel welcomed and comfortable with us.

Photography and photographers in general are having tough financial times and we’d assume this also affects Festivals. Share with us about Angkor’s funding situation. Yes, this is a major problem for everyone, even the photo festivals that have been around for a long time. In the industry everyone knows it is getting more and more difficult to find funding now. When organisations and companies face budget cuts, it is funding to projects like ours that gets affected first. Since last year it has been very difficult for us, and we’re always trying to adapt and look for new ways to solve this problem.

You have a strong bond with photography in Asia. People refer to your home in Paris as a quasi hotel for young Asian photographers. How did it all start? If I remember, Munem Wasif was the first guest. Then other ones came and spread the word… Now, I have a lot of regular ‘customers’. I’m sorry to say I can’t take more new ones, it is getting crowded sometimes!

What are your thoughts on the state of photography in Cambodia and Southeast Asia? In Cambodia, there is a growing group of young people who are becoming more involved in photography. The quality is improving and we are seeing more good photographers emerge – last year the winner of the 2013 Photo Prize was Neak Sophal, a graduate from Phnom Penh’s University of Fine Arts. In general, I would say that there is still a lot more room for photographers in Southeast Asia to do different things and to try to pursue more unique story ideas and topics. Every year during the submissions I’m inundated with stories about the same topics and issues, and also covered in the same way. It can be difficult as I prefer not to show similar things year after year. I would love to discover and see more things that I’m not aware of or that I haven’t seen before.

As a curator, what type of photography moves you, and what doesn’t? I can be quite eclectic in my selections. I’m more interested in documentary-style photography because it is full of life, and asking real questions. Personal stories move me a lot. It is about whether I can understand what is it the photographer really wants to say or tell – with more conceptual work, sometimes that isn’t very clear.

It is about whether I can understand what is it the photographer really wants to say or tell – with more conceptual work, sometimes that isn’t very clear.

What would your advice be to young photographers eager to learn and grow? To keep looking at a lot of different work, and try to understand why they find it ‘good’ or ‘bad’, and to why they like it or not. To keep true to their own style and self, and not to copy what is trendy. To be more careful with how they edit their work and not to be afraid to do more long-term projects that go in-depth.

You have announced the dates for this year’s festival, so last question, what can we expect from this year’s 10th anniversary 10 celebration? Years of Angkor Photo Festival: Interview With Francoise Callier | Invisible Ph t grapher Asia (IPA) | 亞洲隱形攝影師 13/10/14 12:40 The dates will be November 29-December 6.

For our 10th anniversary, we plan to have a lot more outdoor exhibitions to be able to involve more of the local community. We’re also thinking to increase the size of the Angkor Photo Workshops to allow for more participants. We have a lot of great projects in the pipeline, but let’s wait for a bit http://invisiblephotographer.asia/2014/02/08/interview-francoisecallier-angkorfest/ because we need to be sure we can afford to have them all. Cross your fingers for us!

Thanks Francoise and an advanced Happy 10th Anniversary. Hope to see you again at the Festival!

10th edition of the Angkor Photo Festival Le vendredi 31 octobre 2014 10:47:26 The longest-running photography event in Southeast Asia, the annual Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops is a free international platform & educational resource for established and emerging photographers. Created in 2005 by a group of photographers, the Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops began as an endeavour to train emerging photographers from Asia. We remain strongly committed to nurturing and promoting emerging Asian talent, and encouraging the development of photography in Asia. We are proud to be a member and the host of this year’s annual meeting of the Asia Pacific PhotoForum. An international consortium of professional photography festivals, which collectively seeks to further the presence of photography across the Asia Pacific region and around the Pacific Rim, the Asia Pacific PhotoForum offers a collective medium for artistic expression, and the dissemination of ideas and information in a globalizing world. In addition to the meeting, we will assemble a public panel involving the directors of visiting festivals to discuss contemporary issues on photography. As more festivals emerge in the region, our emphasis on education has become an increasingly critical part of what we do. Our annual tuition-free workshops provide Asia's emerging talent with premier professional training, addressing the region’s lack of affordable and accessible options for emerging photographers to take their craft to the next level. During the week-long workshop, participants are tutored by internationally renowned photographers who volunteer their time to provide first-hand training, exposure and valuable career advice. We are proud to present this year’s six workshop tutors and the 30 selected participants from 14 countries all over Asia.

[English] The longest-running photography event in Southeast Asia, the Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops is a free international platform and educational resource for established and emerging photographers. Our organisation remains strongly committed to nurturing and promoting young Asian talent, and encouraging the development of photography in the region. Our discoveries of both new and classic work are shared through evening projections and exhibitions, and the informal nature of our programme creates a welcoming atmosphere where open exchange thrives. Over the past decade, it has been rewarding for us to play a role in ushering some of the region’s best photographers onto the international stage, creating greater exposure for their work and the issues they cover. As more festivals emerge in the region, our emphasis on education has become an increasingly critical part of what we do. Our annual series of workshops provides the region’s emerging talent with first-hand training and invaluable career advice, addressing the lack of affordable and accessible opportunities for young Asian photographers to take their craft to the next level. ajoutez un avis votre avis

Davao is known for its wide variety of durians – that rich, pungent Asian King of Fruits. Durian lovers know that they make for a cheap and filling meal. Simply park yourself at the tables and chairs just outside Magsaysay Park, where the Magsaysay fruit stand is, and tuck in. August to October is generally durian season where they go for as low as PHP30-50 (USD0.67 to USD1) per kilogram, depending on the variety.

The Angkor Photo Festival is the longest-running photography event in South-East Asia. As more festivals emerge, this event’s emphasis on education has become even more important, says coordinator Jessica Lim what sets this photo festival apart from others in the region? The town of Siem Reap, with the majestic temples of Angkor, has a very special meaning to the founding group of photographers. They spent many years living and working in the region and the festival and workshops were their way of giving back to the community. That and providing training for emerging photographers in Asia, to empower them to be storytellers of their own cultures and communities. It is this origin that makes education such a big part of what we do. I can only speak for myself, but this festival is special to me because of its casual and informal atmosphere, which promotes open exchange and interaction. No one walks around with badges declaring their status.

this is the festival's 10th birthday. what's extra special this year? For the first time, we’re having “The Impact Project”, an evening of projecting photo stories about people making positive changes in the world. We’ll also be holding a special night dedicated to displaying the work of workshop alumni. This year also sees the launch of “GreenLight”, a series of outdoor exhibitions by the riverside that focuses on photo projects highlighting important environmental issues. can you tell us about what you see as the most compelling photography coming out of this region right now? I absolutely love watching the photography scene unfold in both Thailand and Cambodia. There’s so much flux, with traditional formats meeting new concepts and emerging

photographers daring to experiment, that it’s always refreshing and exciting. Working at the festival, I’ve been privileged to have seen extraordinary work from all over Asia, and it’s impossible to pinpoint just one country in particular. which exhibitions are your favourites? That’s a difficult question. Ragnar Axelsson’s magnificent images from the Arctic, legendary Hong Kong photographer Fan Ho’s black-andwhite street photography, Stephen Shame’s 22-year-long work on the lives of boys living in the Bronx, workshop alumnus Kishor Sharma’s on nomads in Nepal, “Ceux du Nord” a collection of historical images of the Vietnam War as photographed by Vietnamese photographers... angkor-photo.com

at the famed unesco world Heritage site. on 7 december, walkers, joggers, sprinters and endurance runners will rise at dawn to take part in the 21km half marathon, the 10km run or the 3km family run. the scenery is breathtaking – the ancient ruins covered in mist and the forest still dewy – and all races start and finish in front of angkor wat’s lotus-shaped spires. angkormarathon.org

“An international consortium of professional photography festivals, which collectively seeks to further the presence of photography across the Asia Pacific region and around the Pacific Rim, the Asia Pacific PhotoForum offers a collective medium for artistic expression, and the dissemination of ideas and information in a globalizing world. In addition to the meeting, we will assemble a public panel involving the directors of visiting festivals to discuss contemporary issues on photography.”

ANGKOR Photo Festival exhibitions Created in 2005 by a group of photographers, the Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops began as an endeavour to train emerging photographers from Asia. We remain strongly committed to nurturing and promoting emerging Asian talent, and encouraging the development of photography in Asia.

(https://phosmag.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/efeo_rakzphotography_hr_4575.jpg) “As more festivals emerge in the region, our emphasis on education has become an increasingly critical part of what we do. Our annual tuition-free workshops provide Asia’s emerging talent with premier professional training, addressing the region’s lack of affordable and accessible options for emerging photographers to take their craft to the next level. During the week-long workshop, participants are tutored by internationally renowned photographers who volunteer their time to provide first-hand training, exposure and valuable career advice. We are proud to present this year’s six workshop tutors and the 30 selected participants (https://phosmag.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/efeo_rakzphotography_hr_4590.jpg) from 14 countries all over Asia.” More information: http://phosmag.com/2014/10/31/angkor-photo-festival/ Page 1 sur 3 www.angkor-photo.com (http://www.angkor-photo.com) facebook (https://www.facebook.com/AngkorPhotoFestival?fref=ts) Siem Reap – Cambodia – 26 Nov. to 6 Dec. 2014
