Shop with a plan! Many ways to gain more bang for your buck is making a list of what exactly you need. Leaving the house with a wandering mind can only play against you. Here are some tips for having a successful shopping day! Make a list • Look through your child’s closet and make a list of items you being worn out. • Basics go a long way. Focus on buying clothing that can be layered or mixed. This will stretch your wardrope.

Clearenced Items • Every store has a clearence section. Aim there first and take time to go through each item and try to find a garment that suits you and your child. • If you see a piece of clothing with a stain or lose threads, ask for a discount. More then most likely, the store would be more then happy to give you a discount.

Coupons, coupons, and more coupons • Gather your daily news paper and clippers magazine and scan through each page in search of local retail store coupons. • Walmart has a sale on infant to toddler clothing every third week each month!

Quality over Quantity • You may end up paying more for more clothing then buying a complete sweat outfit or a pair of blue jeans and a shirt for the same price. Check your prices all the time.

Ebay and Craigslist These online options are always tuned into the latest and trendiest styles. You can find children clothes from one dollar to 5 dollars for complete outfit sets from brands like The Childrens Place, Justice, and Gap Kids. When is the best time to shop Ebay or Craigslist? • Right before the weekend hits. Online stores are constantly having inventory roll overs, saling great condition and well kepted clothing for next to nothing.

How do I know it is not a scam? • Ebay and Craiglist users use feedback to try to give you a feel for the seller’s performance. You should be careful buying from a seller with a feedback below 10 they may not be stable.

Is there a return policy? • Don’t be impressed by money-back guarentees and dirt-cheap shipping. If it is a scam, they aren’t going to give your money back and they aren’t going to ship anything.

Safe clothing for you child Many products out in the markets, are made with synthetic materials that can be harmful to you and to your child. Check the tags and what material all your newly dicounted clothing is made out of. Dont worry. Cotton can be cheap and is soft on skin. When you see a shirt that is labeled 100% cotton, hand wash and lay flat to dry.

This is a golden ticket item. You do not have to spend money on the laundromat. This means you can wash it right in your sink or tub and then lay it right down on the floor or over a raling to drip dry.

Pay attention to labels.

This could be the way to keeping more money in your pocket and to be used else where.

Taking advantage of your laundromat At home a person can only do one load at a time, but at a laundromat customers can do 10 loads of wash at a time if he wants. While a person waits for his clothes to finish, he can sit quietly and read a book. Some laundromats have a few arcade games for the children. Laundromats also have some commercially sized washers and dryers for those big king sized quilts you may be needing to wash. They wash and dry the items that are too big for you to take care of at home. •

Save your change all the time and keep in a jar labeled “Wash”. This will set aside money to keep your clothing nice and clean!

Wash in big loads, if you do it this way, you will lesson the amount of times you have to take the bus or train the the Laundromat.

Gather coupons from Target, Walmart, or Walgreens catalogs for laundry detergent discounts and savings.

See if your local Laundromat has a discount card or frequent user advantage. This could give you several rounds of free washes!

SNAP

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is the program formerly known as food stamps. A nutrition program is not a welfare cash assistance program. You do not have to be receiving TAFDC to get SNAP — these are separate programs. Benefits can be used to purchase food at grocery stores, convenience stores, and some farmers’ markets and co-op food programs. Benefits are given to you each month on a plastic card called an EBT (electronic benefits transfer) card, which works like a debit card. Paper coupons are no longer used. It is a federal nutrition program that helps you stretch your food budget and buy healthy food. It is a federal entitlement program, which means that anyone who is eligible will receive benefits. You will not be taking away benefits from someone else if you apply. For non-citizens: proof of legal non-citizen status. Child and adult care expenses: Housing costs (rent or mortgage and utilities) Out-of-pocket medical expenses (if age 60 or over, or disabled) Child support payments being made to a child living outside of the household. Over the phone: call Project Bread’s FoodSource Hotline at 1-800-645-8333 to start an application over the phone, or have an application sent to you through the mail. By mail or fax: you can find links to fill-able PDFs and Word documents to download and complete on the DTA website. Apply online: use the Mass.gov Virtual Gateway to apply online today.

The First Food Stamp Program (FSP) - May 16, 1939-Spring 1943 The idea for the first FSP is credited to various people, most notably Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace and the program’s first Administrator Milo Perkins. The program operated by permitting people on relief to buy orange stamps equal to their normal food expenditures; for every $1 worth of orange stamps purchased, 50 cents worth of blue stamps were received. Orange stamps could be used to buy any food; blue stamps could only be used to buy food determined by the Department to be surplus. It is a federal entitlement program. This means anyone who is eligible will receive benefits. You will not be taking away benefits from someone else if you apply.

FOOD

Let’s eat! for the health of it

Built a healthy plate

Cut back on sugars and salt

Eat the right amount of calories for you

Be physically active your way

Built it healthy Before you eat, think about what goes on your plate or in your cup or bowl. Foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean protein foods contain the nutrients you need without too many calories. Try some of these options. Make half your plate fruits and vegetables

Make at leas half your grains whole

• Eat red, orange, and dark-green vegetables, such as otmatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli, in main and side dishes.

• Choose 100% whole-grain cereals, breads, crackers, rice, and pasta. It is healthier and also it is better for your digestion.

• Eat fruit, vegetables, or unsalted nuts as snacks. They are nature’s original fast foods.

• Check the ingredients list on food packages to find whole-grain foods.

Switch to skim or 1% milk

Vary your protein food choices

• They have the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but less fat and calories.

• Twice a week, make seafood the protein on your plate. It helps the stomach to process food better.

• Try calcium-fortified soy products as an alternative to dairy foods to keep variety.

• Eat beans, which are a natural source of fiber and protein and creates variety in your diet.

Cut back the bad Many people eat foods with too much solid fats, added sugars, and salt (sodium). Added sugars and fats load foods with extra calories you don’t need. Too much sodium may increase your blood pressure Choose foods and drinks with little or no added sugars

Look out salt (sodium) in foods you buy

• Drink water instead of sugary drinks. There are about 10 packets of sugar in a 12-ounce can of soda.

• Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals. It all adds up to an unhealthy meal.

• Select fruit for dessert. Eat sugary desserts less often. Choose 100% fruit juice instead of fruit-flavored drinks, which containe sugar and all sort of preservatives.

• Add spices or herbs to season food without adding salt. Spices add a nice flavor to all type of foods and some of them have the slaty taste you need.

Eat fewer foods that are high in solid fats • Make major sources of saturated fats (such as cakes cookies, ice cream, pizza, cheese, sausages, and hot dogs) occational choices, not everyday foods. • Select lean cuts of meats or poultry and fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese.

Switch from solid fats to oil when preparing food Solid Fats Beef, pork, and chicken fat Butter, cream, and milk fat Coconut and palm oils Hydrogenated oil Shortening Stick margarine

Oils Canola & Corn oil Cottonseed oil Olive oil Peanut oil Sunflower oil Vagetable oil

Eat the right amount of calories for you Everyone has a personal calorie limit. Staying within yours can help you get to or maintain a healthy weight. People who are successful at managing their weight have found ways to keep track of how much they eat in a day, even if they don’t count every calorie. It is also recommended to eat maller portions several times a day to keep your stomach busy; this helps the metabolism and keeps it active. Enjoy your food, but eat less.

Cook more often at home, where you are in control.

• Get your personal daily calorie limit and keep that number in mind when deciding what to eat.

• Choose dishes that include vegetables, fruits, and/or whole grains.

• Think before you eat...is it worth the calories?

• When eating out, choose lower calorie menu options.

• Avoid oversized portions.

• Check posted calorie amounts.

• Use a smaller plate, bowl, and glass.

• Order a smaller portion or share when eating out.

• Stop eating when you are satisfied, not full.

• Avoid eating heavy desserts.

Be physically active your way What you eat and drink and your level of physical activity are important for your own health, and also for your children’s health. You are your children’s most important role model. Your children pay attention to what you do more than what you say. You can do a lot to help your children develop healthy habits for life by providing and eating healthy meals and snacks. For example, don’t just tell your children to eat their vegetables and show them that you eat and enjoy vegetables every day. Remember, the best way of teaching your children different things to improve their lifes now and in the future is through your example of life. They learn through imitation. Practice this at home and you will see the possitive results.

About Supermarkets Over a century ago, the companies that dominated the global food trade -- Cargill, Louis Dreyfus, Continental Grain, and Bunge -were wholesalers. Today, these giants are dwarfed by the supermarkets that govern the global food system from farm to fork. Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has sales greater than 2 percent of U.S. GDP and, with 2.1 million greeters, stock clerks, and logistics officers working at its 8,416 stores from Shenzhen to Shreveport, ranks among the largest employers worldwide - only China’s army has more people on its payroll. Supermarkets first jumped to the developing world in the 1990s; now they account for more than half of food retail sales in Latin America and China.
