outh-by-Southwest Ontario is home to some of the richest fishing lakes and rivers in the province, even in the country. In this newly revised edition, we cover a wide range of freshwater fishing. At one end are lakes in the Canadian Shield around the Muskoka region. This area is characterized with dense forests, rocky soil, and lakes carved by retreating glaciers. At the southwestern edge of this region lie the rich and productive waters of the great lakes system - Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie, connected together by fabulously productive rivers.

Next to the Kawarthas is one of central Ontario’s main attraction - Lake Simcoe. When winter is upon us, it seems that small cities pop up on the lake, drawing ice anglers from across Ontario.

Southwest of Simcoe lies the headwaters of the Grand River, which flows south emptying into Lake Erie near Dunnsville. You’ll be impressed with the vast range of fishing on this river that Fishing the Kawarthas will hook you into a unique lives up to its name. group of both cool and warm water lakes, Continuing southwest you can with carp fishing that sees anexperience the productive fishing of the Thames River that passes through C h a -

the province due to it’s shallow nature and rapid flushing rate. And don’t forget the Detroit River, which Lake St. Clair continuously feeds. Of course, there’s the big-water fishing on Lake Ontario, which has salmon, lake trout and more. The Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario is noteworthy itself, and we’ve got that covered, too. Note: Previous editions were called Ontario South-Central Fishing. But with the addition of Lake St. Clair, Thames River and the Detroit River we thought it more appropriate to also emphasize the southwest.

Detroit River T

he Detroit River is relatively short river, running less than 50 km in length. Yet it is one of the most diverse and productive fisheries in the country. Linking together Lake St. Clair with Lake Erie, this river provides a wide range of fishing experiences for many different species and appealing to hard core and beginning anglers alike.

It has excellent fishing for walleye, three species of bass, perch, crappie, gar pike, northern pike, channel catfish, and is world class destination for the mighty muskie.

Moving downstream to where the river passes the downtown core of Windsor, there are a number of places that are popular right along the banks. Roberto Hospedales, fising manager at Canadian Tire Windsor South says several places are popular among anglers. “Right at Caesars Casino is a good spot. Also right in front of the police station and at the marina. You can fish either off the dock or from a boat.”

So we have developed a four page spread that highlights several of these fisheries, and interviewed several staff from three Canadian Tire stores in Windsor area.

Once the spawning season is over and the weather warms up, the walleye fishery changes. “In the summertime, most of the fish will move out of the river and into the lakes,” says Strange, adding there are a number of new ways to fish for walleye at this time.

erch and crappie are also quite popular along this system. They can be found in the slower moving areas of the river. One of the popular techniques that targets multiple species is with a pickerel rig. When fishing for these species, Strange recommends reducing the size of your tackle and use smaller hooks. “We use a lot of pickerel rigs. That’s one of the most popular methods if you are just still fishing out of a boat. And you will get multiple species.” “You want the one that has the spreader on it with a couple of hooks. You put a small minnow on it no more than an inch long. I caught a 20 pound channel cat using that set up.” Catfish are yet another popular fish to target on the river. Hospedales says “if you’re going for catfish, get your lure on the bottom. They are a lot of fun to fish for, and many fish for them at night.” He sees a lot more kayak fishing, saying it is becoming quite popular, and a great way to get on the river. Gar pike is another fishery in the river that is popular, and Hospedales suggests using minnows and a whistler jig, casting out with a slow retrieve.

The Grand River has three major sections, each with its own unique character. Anglers can fish separate parts of the river all year long, for different species.

easy to wade along. Keep in mind there are some deeper areas, but for the most part it is shallow and meandering. The cold water in the upper section makes for a perfect habitat for the brown trout, as well as the large amount of insects. The top section of the river is especially buggy, making it great for fly fishing. When in doubt use caddis or minnows flies. Keep in mind the Southern Ontario bug hatches and aim to use bait that imitate the insects in the area.

The top of the river, from Belwood Lake and the Shand dam, through Elora to Waterloo, is cold and clear. The water quality is ideal for brown trout. The lower section of the Grand River is one of the most interesting river habitats in Canada. You can do everything there, from boat fishing to wading, conventional lures to spey casting. Another popular choice is to fish from a kayak, canoe, or simply from shore. Carp fishing is really taking off in the lower section, especially with those who fish from shore. Fly fishing for carp is very popular. Try a large rubber legged nymph in a crayfish pattern. The mudder the water, the more likely you are to find carp. The lower section is also gaining popularity due to the thriving channel cats. They prefer warmer water, making this the perfect spot. These cats have been known to put up a good fight, adding to the excitement of the river. Before you head out for an exciting day of fishing the Grand River, be sure to stop into Canadian Tire Elmira for all your fishing needs. lures.” Hall says that emerald shiners are the best. Because of the large amounts of nutrients in the lake, the perch are very large. In the spring, they can generally be found in 55 degree water, but will move into shallower, warmer water after they spawn.

Walleye on the other hand prefer colder water. During the fall and spring, they will be in shallow, 15-30 foot deep water. However, as the water warms in July and August, walleye can be found at depths of 75-90 feet. Because they are so When fishing for perch, Hall rec- deep in the summer, they often do ommends live bait, as “perch are not survive after being caught. Walleye average in the five- to six-lbs range and can be as large as 12lbs. Trolling is the most common method for walleye fishing, with anglers targeting drop-offs and midlake humps. Ben Woo, organizer of the Berkley B1 bass fishing event, says Lake Erie is home to small and largemouth bass, but it is the smallmouth that the lake is famous for. The shallow waters of the lake allow for these fish to thrive. When fishing for smallmouth bass, Woo recommends looking for drop off points around 20-35 feet deep. These fish can almost always be found near rocky bottoms or shoals, making this a great place to start. Woo says that using a drop shot rig

In addition to the above mentioned species, Scott Luey, CAO at the City of Port Colborne says that muskie, northern pike, and panfish can also popular. In particular, anglers can find great shore fishing from the docks located at Sugarloaf Marina.

Later in June, on June 22-23rd, Port Colborne will be hosting the Budweiser Shootout. This derby focuses on walleye fishing. For more information, call Erie Tracker at 905-834-9218. In addition, there is a Thursday nightWalleye League at Sugarloaf Marina. For more information, call 905-835-6644.

When targeting muskie, Luey says they are close to shore early in the season, which opens the first Saturday in June. Early summer and fall are best for muskie. These are some of the largest in the lake, with anglers catching muskie over 40” long! Luey recommends trolling or casting using artificial lures. However, he reminds anglers that muskie are the “fish of 1000 casts” meaning patience is needed. If your setup is not working, try something new. Michelle Cuthbert, communications officer for the City of Port Colborne says there are a number of exciting events taking place over the summer. Anglers are invited to take part in the Port Colborne & District Conservation Club Kids Fishing Derby on June 17. Located

ake Erie is one of Canada’s most exciting fisheries, with so many species calling this waterbody home. Anglers can find walleye, pike, bass, rainbow trout, perch, and many others, making each fishing trip to Lake Erie different from the last. The Port Stanley area has some great fishing, and is a fantastic place for anglers looking to target yellow perch. Moreover, some of Lake Erie’s biggest perch have come from this

ake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes in surface area (18,960 sq. km) but its greater depth gives it four times the volume of Lake Erie. spring and fall, when they’re feeding more heavily. At these times, river mouths and creeks are good places to fish. Fly fishers often congregate to try their luck for these fabulous fish. Walleye have made a comeback in Lake Ontario in recent years, a sign that conservation and habitat efforts do work. Spring and fall are the best times to troll, jig or drift for walleye over rocky shoals or other natural cover. Fall, in particular, can be excellent for walleye. Some places that can be productive are around the eastern end of the lake. Look for islands, especially. Get down to about the 60 foot depth. The Bay of Quinte is a popular and productive

spot for bass and walleye, and this year we have devoted several pages to each section of this amazing stretch of water. From Trenton, which hosts the largest fishing derby in the world, all the way to Adolphus Reach. Flowing into Lake Ontario, there are hot spots for both migratory and resident walleye. In the spring, as the fish roam up into the shallow waters of the Bay of Quinte, anglers are in for a treat in this special spot. Toronto Harbour is another success story. Once considered unfishable, rehabilitation efforts have made the harbour area one of the best fishing spots on Lake Ontario. Finally, the stretch of water from Jordan Harbour to Niagara is another hot spot on the south side of Lake Ontario. From lake trout in the lake, to steelhead and muskie in the Niagara River, this region is a growing and developing fishery.

The lake flushes itself into Lake Erie an average of every seven days, taking as little as 2 days or as long as 30 days to push the flow from the St. Clair River, through the Detroit River. This flushing provides plenty of nutrients for the small forage fish and creatures that make up the diet of resident bass. It also helps keep this shallow lake somewhat cooler than you would think, considering it has an average depth of only 10 feet. ake Scugog is a popular fishing lake near Peterborough. Ice fishing is especially busy here. There is good black crappie fishing in Lake Scugog. Minnows and small tube jigs can work well, especially in low light conditions. Usually, dusk and dawn are the best times. Currently, the Ministry of Natural Resources is considering a closure on walleye in Lake Scugog due to a major decline in fish stocks in recent years. The fisheries for other species would remain open. Perch are also commonly caught during the winter, and although many of them are quite small, there are some larger fish to be found. During the warmer months, many of the same ice fishing techniques also work on open water. For black crappie, try jigging minnows near the bottom with small spoons. Crappie are generally active at night. As they target walleye fry, they can often be found near walleye. turgeon Lake is another one of the Kawartha Lakes located just north of Peterborough. These lakes are excellent for fishing, combining great catch rates and easy access. Justin Brown, local angler, says that Sturgeon Lake has always been one of his favourites. Apart from the great variety of fish species, “the type of vegetation that grows in this lake is so vast that with every cast you could be catching a trophy fish.” Sturgeon Lake is known for its bass fishing, particularly in the channels between lakes. In Sturgeon Lake itself, muskie and walleye are more abundant. “Make sure you take your time navigating this lake. Be sure to follow the

The classic top waters seem to produce very well, such as Hula Popper, Knocker Spook, and a must is a top water frog of any sort. Weedless hooks are also your best friend.
