LAKE SHORE HIGH SCHOOL’S EUROPEAN ADVENTURE 2014

Last month, 89 students from Lake Shore High School left their classrooms and went on a twelve day trip to Europe. The annual tour over February break was organized by high school French teacher, Stan Moore. The students had the opportunity to view history first-hand by visiting many famous sites in Greece and Italy and to experience the culture in each country. Students tried many new foods, learned cultural practices, and basic greetings in Greek and Italian. Highlights of their time in Greece included touring the Acropolis in Athens, the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, and experiencing a traditional Greek dinner and dancing. After saying goodbye to Greece, students boarded an overnight ferry to Italy. In Italy, students took a tour of Florence, the city famous for being the birthplace of the Renaissance. Many of them climbed over 400 steps to the top of the Duomo. After Florence, the group went to Rome where they visited the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and the Vatican. During the last days of the tour, students took a tour of Pompeii and traveled by boat to the island of Capri. Students returned home with unforgettable experiences and a better understanding of other cultures. Pictured are the student travelers in Pompeii. __________

J. T. WAUGH’S “100 MILE CLUB”

Lake Shore’s J. T. Waugh Elementary School has participated in three seasons of the “Girls on the Run” program looking toward the fourth beginning at the end of March. The program offered girls in grades 3-5 to join a team, which taught life skills and prepared them to run a 5K as the grand finale to the fun filled, highenergy season. As the girls were learning and running, boys of J. T. Waugh requested a similar program. In October 2013, the “100 Mile Club” was started for the boys. The program is based after the National “100 Mile Club” program started in 1993 by Kara Lubin, with life lessons added to help the boys grow socially and emotionally not just physically. As of March 5, the group of 16 boys has compiled a total of 1,127.69 miles as each individual boy worked toward their personal goal of 100 miles. Teamwork has been key to reach this massive number of miles with boys supporting and encouraging each other. The boys will participate in “The Boys on the Right Track 5K” on April 8, in Hamburg to close the season. During each program the support from Lake Shore Varsity sports has been amazing with the Girls’ Varsity Soccer and Girls’ Varsity Cross Country teams making time to not only run with the girls but to be positive role models sharing how being active in school makes you a well rounded student. The boys did not miss out on this opportunity as the Boys’ Varsity Cross Country came to run with the boys and also offer words of wisdom of how to be successful in the future. Paula J. Eastman, principal of J. T. Waugh is the head coach for both programs but would not be able to offer them if it wasn’t for the volunteers who assist. Jeff Sills, Monica O’Connor, and Laurie Schultz all staff members of Waugh dedicated their time to getting this program started. “Angola Horror” Presentation

The tragic train diaster that occured in 1867 in Angola will be presented at the Evans Historical Society meeting on Monday, March 24 at 7 p.m. Angola’s local author, Charity Vogel, will review the many aspects of the train accident that happened as the train crossed the Big Sister bridge in the village. Ms. Vogel has extensively researched the horrific diaster and has written a book, The Angola Horror. The literary piece focuses on the human element of the individuals who were injured or died in the wreck. Many local residents at the time of the accident who assisted at the scene are mentioned in the book. The impact this tragedy had on the future of railroading is also included in the book. The “Angola Horror” program will be held at the Evans Historical Museum on Route 5 and North Main Street in Evans Center. The public is invited and admission is free. Refreshment will also be served. Following the presentation The Angola Horror book will be available for purchase ($18 for members, $20 for non-members) and Ms. Vogel will sign copies for those wishing to have an autographed book.

It may still feel like winter, but spring break is right around the corner at Mercyhurst University. While some students opt to travel home during the week of March 10 or take a much-needed vacation, several dozen Lakers are dispersing across the country to pay it forward through alternative spring break trips. One such trip is taking 30 volunteers -- 29 students and one chaperone -- to Sumter, S.C. for a Habitat for Humanity project. Jessica Ludwig, of Angola, is one of the volunteers who will help Habitat build a home for a family in need. Volunteers will spend a week on site, working 9-to-5 shifts with group discussion and reflections in the evenings. "At Mercyhurst, we talk about 'Getting the Experience' in the classroom, but even during breaks, we offer these volunteer opportunities to students so they can gain a different real-world experience," said Colin Hurley, director of service learning at Mercyhurst. Through Habitat, teams of volunteers work from start to finish, from laying foundations to putting up framework and dry wall to painting and adding the finishing touches. Greg Baker, director of Campus Ministry is leading this trip. Habitat arranges room and board for volunteers, as well as transportation to and from the building sites. __________

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL SOLVES A MYSTERY!

Students in Miss Annmarie Busha's 4th grade, and Ms. Erica Aikin's 8th grade were told that a machine that turns coal into diamonds in less than an hour has been stolen from the lab of Dr. Suzy Squeeze. Students then analyzed and tested all 6 pieces of evidence found at the crime scene. This includes fingerprints found on a glass, chromatography on a note the thief wrote about the crime, spilled liquid and powders and a strong smell found in the lab and some fibers also recovered in the area. Then they had to look closely at all of their findings to determine who they think stole the diamond maker. Every year Miss McIntyre's Grade 3 class has a boat project assigned to them. It is like a right of passage when the younger grades look at all the finished boats in the hall. Everyone looks forward to certain things in school and this is one of them. The rules are that it has to float, be less than 15 inches long, holds cargo, has a name, some life saving feature and must be presented to the class. The students did a great job with their boats. It's always amazing to see what creative projects come out of our students. "Only girls wear pink..." That stereotype and others like it are common old-school stereotypes that negatively affect students and sometimes are at the heart of bullying. Bullying is a hot topic in the media today, and with an increase in social-media usage, it is easy to understand why. The days where teen bullies might be heard saying, "give me your lunch money," may be gone, but cyber-bullying through online websites have increased teen bullying to startling numbers. Recently in Lake Shore 2017: Freshman Seminar, students have been learning about the bully, the bullied and the bystanders and how they are connected. Students spent much time analyzing the role social-media plays in bullying and how to avoid such reactive behaviors. We all know that the old saying, "sticks and stones...words will never hurt..." is not really true; words do hurt--sometimes worse than bruises. We may forgive cruel actions, but we don't always forget. Therefore, freshmen have made a vow to not only avoid bullying but also report it when happening in and out of school. They are realizing that peers have great power to prevent bullying in places where adults may not be around. In a two-part project, Lake Shore freshmen worked together to educate the rest of the school on the dangers of bullying, They made posters with information and statistics regarding bullying and even held a dress-down day where students wore pink to school. In class, they read an article about a boy who was taunted because he wore pink to school. Well, when the school's student leaders' found out about this, they declared the next day "wear pink to school" day asking all students to wear pink in support of the bullied student. This proved to be a proactive, peaceful way to combat such bullying. Lake Shore freshmen wore pink on Valentine's Day in honor of this brave and proactive stand against bullying and in support of love for all humanity (Pictured: student antibullying posters and Lake Shore freshmen in pink!). Kindergarten students at J. T. Waugh celebrated “Dr. Seuss’ Birthday“ with a special guest. Assemblyman David DiPietro loves reading and wanted to share his love for reading with students. He decided what better way than to reach out to Kindergarten students on one of the best days of the year, “Read Across America Day”, which is actually celebrated on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Assemblyman Dipietro came to Waugh a few days early since he would be in Albany on March 2. Wearing a hat made famous in the world-renowned book, “Cat in the Hat”, the Assemblyman read two stories and had many laughs with his audience of kindergartens while doing so. Submitted by J.T.
