The Town of Brant would like to thank all the residents, friends, neighbors & participants that enjoyed the 175th year anniversary celebration at our 11th annual Summer Fest.

Saturday June 21st began with the kickoff ceremony honoring Joseph N. Giambrone with a plaque for his 30 dedicated years as Highway Superintendent. Then Joe blew out the candles on a birthday cake to celebrate the towns 175th Birthday. A thank you must go to historian Patty Friend & Tish Hill for all the work they did on the 175th anniversary historical book which was distributed in the Historical Society display room. A Strawberry Pie eating contest then followed with George LoBianco III winning the prize. The popular GOYA foods cook-off brought 12 entries to the table and Barb Daniel won with her Stuffed Green Pepper soup. The 3rd annual Madison McCarthy 5K strawberry run brought many to the benefit in which Heather Berger was the top female finishers with a time of 23:21 and Jose Quiros the top Male finished 20:06. The Sunset Blue Grass band provided the music during the day and the Diva Show band wowed the crowd in the evening followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

Sunday June 22nd started with a parade won by Most Original Brant Fire Truck— Most Unique Lake Shore Youth Football—Community Spirit – Happy 175th Gugino Lawn & Garden --- Most Beautiful The Lemke Family—Original era costume Eden American Legion & the Donkey Carts. The Classic Car show followed with 19 entries and the Best of the show was won by Dan Gernatt 1933 Chrysler Imperial. The EggXtravaganza brought 17 children to find over $175 worth of prizes. The Dance Connections performed a mini dance recital followed by the 4th annual clerks Donkey race won by Denise Trumtore the Town Clerk of Persia. The annual Photo contest was won by Lisa Catalano with “Sonny and his little Buddy” the Fest ended with the battle of the Firemen and Farnham won the 3rd annual Waterball contest. The basket raffle had over 25 baskets with many satisfied winners and the 50-50 mega drawing was won by Evan Russell.

Life-long 'brother' to the James Palmer family of Lake View, he truly will be missed by many.

Legislator Mills Presents Check to Angola Library

Erie County Legislator John J. Mills is pleased to announce that the 3rd annual Angola Library Hot Dog Roast Fundraiser, held June 6, raised $1,210 to support continued improvements to the library.

The donation was presented to Library Director Mary Truby on June 27 during a presentation at the library. Also attending the presentation were Village of Angola Trustee Carole Kin, who serves as liaison to the library; Library Board President Jack Kuebler and Library Board Trustee Donna Nagel.

“Thanks to the support of the community, the third annual Hot Dog Roast Fundraiser at the Angola Library surpassed last year’s total, raising $1,210 for the library. We had a great turnout and I look forward to next year’s fundraiser to continue this great tradition,” said Legislator Mills.

Evans Force Wins Last Five

Coming off an early exit in the Dazzlers tournament the Evans Force 12U softball team returned to league action. First was a visit to Cheektowaga to play the Crabapples. The game was a see saw battle with the home team gaining a 8-7 lead at the bottom of the fourth. But Force's bats heated up and they outscored the Crabapples in the last three innings 9-1 to go on to a 16-9 win. There were many hitting stars as Tabitha Allen has a single and a triple scored 3 times and had 2 RBI. Cam Adimey, Caitlin Burbige and Kymi Nance all had 3 runs also with Adimey getting 2 hits 1 RBI, Burbige 3 walks and Nance 2 hits 2 walks and 4 RBI. Mandy Tempski, Ravyn Isaacs and Aliana Torres all added hits. Evie Butlak pitched a complete game allowing only 1 hit and 2 walks after 7 hits in the first 2 innings.

Next Evans started a four game homestand with 4 home games in 5 nights. First they hosted the North Buffalo Wildcats at the EYB annual picnic. The Force welcomed newcomer Megan Kyte who pitched a no hitter with only 2 walks and 13 strikeouts. The Force carried a 5-1 lead to the sixth when they got 6 in the sixth to secure a 11-1 victory. Kyte provided offensive too going 2 for 2 and a three run homer. The Force only had 4 total hits with 2 from Cam Adimey and 1 by Tabitha Allen. The Force drew 14 walks in the game that helped in their victory.

Next up was the Lancaster Heat Black. The Heat jumped out to a 8-0 lead at the top of the first and up the lead to 11-3 at top of the third. But the Force mounted an amazing comeback. The Force kept slowly closing in on the Heat's lead with 2 in the third, 2 in the fourth, 4 in the fifth and entered the bottom of the seventh down 13-11.

Evie Butlak opened the inning with a hit and stole second and third and then scored on a passed ball. Tabitha Allen walked and scored on Cam Adimey's triple to tie the score and Sam Dils was the hero with a single to score Adimey to win the game. For Dils it was her third hit of the night including a triple in the first. Maddy Tempski also hit a triple to go along with a single. Grace Barker and Kymi Nance also had hits. Evie Butlak entered the game in the fourth and pitched 4 innings allowed only 2 runs, 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4.

The Thunder from Amherst visited Evans next. The Force had little trouble with the Thunder scoring 10 in the first 2 innings en route to a 16-4 mercy win. Caitlin Burbige led the way with 3 hits, a double, 3 runs and 2 RBI. Evie Butlak had a double with Sam Dils, Tabitha Allen and Grace Barker adding singles. The big RBI producers were Kymi Nance with a triple and Ravyn Isaacs with 2 singles.

Each of them had 4 RBIs. Evie Butlak pitched a complete game only allowing 4 hits, 1 walk and striking out 5.

The Lancaster Heat Red were in Evans to play the Force for their third straight day and fourth in five nights. The third game in a row got to starter Evie Butlak. She was not sharp as the Heat jumped out to a 5-1 lead early. The Force looked like they were going to cruise to victory as they scored 8 in the fourth to take a 11-5 lead. But the Heat got 8 runs in the last two innings to take a 13-12 lead going into the bottom off the sixth. But the Force again scored late with 5 runs en route to a 17-13 win. It was probably Evie Butlak's worst outing of the season as she allowed 10 hits and walked 8 despite striking out 10.

But the offensive picked up their teammate allowing her to improve her record to 15-3 on the season. Butlak did help with the offensive with scoring 4 runs going 3 for 3 and 2 RBI. Cam Adimey and Kymi Nance each had a single and a double while Maddy Tempski had 2 doubles with 3 RBI. Tabitha Allen got 3 RBI with a triple and a sacrifice fly. Monica Pokoj, Jessica Beehler and Allison Smith all scored key runs in the Force attack.

Brian Galfo Scholarship Awards

This year’s winners of the $1000 Brian Galfo Memorial Athletic Scholarship were Megan Schritchfield and Matthew Vona. This scholarship is in memory of a former Lake Shore Central Varsity Athlete who tragically passed away before fulfilling his dreams. The recipient must be a three-sport athlete, unselfish, competitive team player, respectful of coaches and teammates, and a team leader.

Sikora Graduates From Denison University

Alexander Joseph Sikora was among 521 graduates awarded diplomas at Denison University's 173rd commencement held Saturday, May 17. Sikora, a resident of Lake View (14085), was awarded a degree from Denison by President Adam Weinberg.

Sikora graduated with a major in biochemistry.

He received the Alumni Award, conducted summer research on a project titled "Using Iron Oxide Nanorods in Application with Photoelectrochemical Cells for Conversion of Solar Energy into CarbonNeutral Fuel," and conducted a senior research project titled "Synthesis of Hematite Nanostructures for the Conversion of Solar Energy." Sikora was a chemistry tutor, a member of the Chemical Society, a WDUB DJ, president of the hockey team and an August Orientation leader. Sikora is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Lake Shore Middle School Bands & Orchestra Take Top Honors at Competitions

The Lake Shore Middle School Music Department has had an exciting spring concert season! In addition to all of the bands, choruses and orchestras performing phenomenal May concerts at school, several groups ventured out to state competitions as well.

The 8th Grade Orchestra, under the direction of Ms. Alicia Louttit, competed at the Darien Lake Music Festival on Friday May 16, 2014. They were adjudicated by two judges and competed against schools from across New York State. The ensemble took 1st place in their division.

The 6th Grade Band, under the direction of Mrs. Carrie Poissant, attended the New York State School Music Association Major Organization Festival on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Orchard Park High School. The group performed incredibly well and received many compliments from the two NYSSMA adjudicators that listened to them. The band brought home a rating of Gold from the festival.

Students in the 4 Year old Preschool class held a Treasure Hunt on the Preschool Playground at Southtowns Catholic School. A pirate left his map attached to the chalkboard and the kids had to solve clues that took them on all the playground equipment. Once the treasure was found, it included pirate hats, flags, coins & necklaces. Southtowns Catholic School Field Trip

Students in Grades 5 & Grade 6 took a field trip to Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. The field trip was part of the Canisius Ambassadors for Conservation (CAC). The program took 3 groups of SCS kids around the 1-mile Swallow Hollow Trail and introduced them to 4 different ecosystems and a wide variety of wildlife. Everyone had binoculars and they were encouraged to find and identify different birds.
