In Memoriam

to our dearest Father and Brother,

JOSEPH J. CERVOLA “Joey #16” who passed away February 24, 2018

It’s been two years since you have passed And this year was no easier than the last Our love for you is never ending We feel the love for us that you’ve been sending We know how proud of Ryan you must be Because all of his accomplishments, you can still see Your sisters miss you and deeply cherish your memories Spending time with your friends brings them much ease We’re so lucky for the relationships that you could create You should know that that love will never fade We miss you now more than ever But I still hear your voice, always saying something clever So to our Father, Brother, Uncle and Friend, Until the day we meet again. Written by nephew, Jacob K. Muscato

1670 Eden Evans Center Rd., Angola, NY 14006 716-549-0338

WE LOVE AND MISS YOU WITH ALL OF OUR HEARTS!

Through the years, the Brant 1 Elementary School students had various field trips, some included visits to local businesses. The Brant 1 teachers were diligent in creating a fun learning experience for the students, both in the classroom and outside the classroom. St. Anthony’s Parsonage, Catholic Church and Parochial School, Commercial St., Farnham, N.Y.

“A school was opened in the early years of St. Anthony’s parish [Commercial Street, Farnham, N.Y.], staffed by Sisters of St. Mary Namur of Kenmore. Classes were first held in the basement of the church. Later a convent and school were erected on the site of the present day parking lot adjacent to the church building. The school was officially opened on September 5, 1905. It contained Grades 1 through 8. Attendance records indicated that school enrollment fluctuated throughout the years. The highest enrollment came in the 1911-1912 school year with seventy-one total students. St. Anthony’s School was very well known throughout the diocese. By the end of the school year of 1918, the student enrollment began to decline. This coupled with the unavailability of the Sisters of the Order to teach caused the school to consider closing. The parish school finally closed in 1921 during the pastorate of Father Leo Toomey. In November of 1925, a flash fire devastated the entire St. Anthony’s parish church, school and rectory. It was decided that the parish church and rectory rebuild, but the convent and school were not rebuilt.” The preceding information is from St. Anthony’s Church of Farnham, Jubilee Celebration booklet dated June 13, 2004. Goetz and Cox Sweep Empire 8 Conference Weekly Honors

Following a season-opening trek to the Lone Star State, Rachael Goetz ‘20 and Alex Cox ‘23, of the Elmira College women’s lacrosse team were honored by the Empire 8 Conference, as the duo swept the weekly honors from the conference office. Goetz was crowned the Player of the Week for the first time in her career, while Cox earned her first Goalie of the Week award after making her collegiate debut in goal. It marks the first time the Soaring Eagles have swept the weekly awards since the 2016 season. Goetz was stellar for the Purple and Gold throughout their opening contests, as the senior led the team in points (10), goals (10), draw controls (9) and ground balls (7). After netting a pair of goals in the season-opener against Southwestern, Goetz hit her stride against Dallas. The Lake View, New York, native potted a career-high-tying eight goals against and picked up six ground balls to lead the Soaring Eagles past the Crusaders for their first win of the 2020 campaign. Through two games, Goetz paces the E8 and is tied for fifth in the nation in goals scored. Cox entered the game against Dallas in relief as the first half drew to a close and did not disappoint. The product of Penn Yan, New York, tallied five saves and only allowed a solitary goal to pick up the win in her first career appearance in net. Following her performance, Cox ranks first among qualified goalkeepers in the E8 in goals-against average (1.86) and save percentage (.833). Contributed by Elmira College __________

Healthy Self Class at the Evans Senior Center

Meditation can wipe away the stress of the day, bringing tranquility and inner peace. Although meditation was originally meant to help deepen understanding of the sacred and mystical forces of life, the lasting effects of stress reduction through meditation can be extremely beneficial to our health. With this in mind, the Evans Senior Center is please to offer this age-old practice in the form of our “Healthy Self” class. Instructor Lisa Watkins brings her knowledge of meditation to direct the class to focus our attention – eliminating the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding our minds – to produce this deep state of relaxation. This process may result in enhanced physical and mental well-being. Many medical conditions, such as anxiety, chronic pain, and high blood pressure can benefit from the practice of meditating. This would not replace, but would work in conjunction with traditional medical treatments. The positive attitude that Ms. Watkins brings to the class each week is so refreshing and welcomed by our members. She also provides aroma therapy and literature to assist with the positive class atmosphere. The Healthy Self class allows our members to experience a more holistic approach to managing their health.
