From the Old Photo Album

One of our members was VERY excited to find this Brant photo postcard on eBay. They wanted to share their purchase with us by allowing us to scan it for our files. This the first photo from the early 1900’s depicting three of the Brant Four Corners that we have come across! The photo is labeled “Brant Center looking West, by R. Troel of N. Collins, N.Y.” In this photo, the photographer is on the Brant-North Collins Road looking towards Farnham and Lake Erie. A right at the corner would take us to Angola and a left would bring us towards the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation. The back of the postcard is cancelled “BRANT N.Y. SEP 6 1910” mailing to “Miss Dorothy Rei___”of “Cleveland O” (our best guess).

We are fortunate that our historical files do include separate photos of the building pictured on the far left street corner with signage “Brant Store”, as well as Lehley’s Store on the far right street corner. And, while we have never had a glimpse of the general store on what is the left side of this photo until today, we did have the following description of the store, written by past town of Brant historian Carlton Winters for our 125th Anniversary Book.

We

In the year 1964 Carlton wrote: “On the southeast corner now occupied by the Brant Supermarket stood a general store owned by Horatio P. Muffitt. He was succeeded by Richard Sherman about 1864. It was in this store that Casper Taylor would sit around the stove reading Civil War news to other customers. John Winter had the store in the 1870’s and Grange meetings were held upstairs. George W. Koehler, William Koehler were subsequent owners and were considered to have one of the best stocked general stores in the area. The last owners before the building burned in 1917 were Henry and Eugene Bowers. Later, a gas station operated by Sam LaDuca and Clarence DiCenzo, was erected and in 1949, the Brant Supermarket was opened by Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Gervas [aka Tony and Lottie].”
