Treat Your Pet To a Vacation Too

Spring has sprung! With the warmer weather comes more vacations and more family fun where you may or may not be able to include Fido. That's ok, because your pet deserves to have its own affordable pampered vacations, too! Have you considered boarding your pet while your family is away? Most people think of boarding kennels as having cold cement floors and small enclosures that have little to no sunlight or grass exposure. That is a thing of the past, modern day kennels are now offering much more than ever before! Elevated dog beds, bright paintings and plants, outdoor play areas, music, and temperature controlled units are becoming more popular options to offer to doggy guests! Golden Paws in Derby has an all-inclusive package for every guest that includes daily enrichment daycare, too, as they feel that every pet deserves to be out of their kennel and socializing during the day to alleviate stress and excess energy! This makes for a happy and tired dog at the end of the day, as the dog gets to enjoy its vacation then, just like you! If your pet is anxious, or has not been boarded previously, it may be a good idea to bring it to the facility you chose a few times prior to their stay. Golden Paws asks this of our clients, as we've seen it help reduce the anxiety in the initial separation period as the dog can recall visiting us, having fun with us, and feeling secure. It's also a good idea to interview the staff so that you know who exactly will be providing the care for your pet and that your pet is comfortable with them. Ask questions about how many people will be handling your pet, how many other dogs will be there during the stay, and anything else pertinent to your pet's comfort level of what its used to. Personalization is key in making sure that your pet's routine is kept the same and that his or her physical and mental needs are met while away from you. Becoming more popular, kennels are now offering video cameras in your dog's kennel so that you can watch at night! A pretty neat option that Golden Paws offers is sending daily text message or email videos and pictures to each individual owner with commentary, this allows owners to see their pet's interactions during the day, and allows owners to communicate back and be in the loop on their pet's activities and behavior. Make your vacation one to remember, and make your pet's time away from you as enjoyable and stress-free as can be! You deserve it, and so does Fido! Teens “Promposals” Don’t Come Cheap

8120 RT. 5 ANGOLA, NY 14006

Coming Soon!!! Angola Shop ‘n Save 9049 Erie Rd., Angola, is changing to

Same People! Same Owner! New Name! RE COMPA D AN SAVE!

We're proud to offer you Shurfine Foods & Products. Shurfine quality meets or exceeds that of your favorite National brands.

NO CARDS ! NO GIMMI CKS!

Not long ago, a high-school kid would ask his favorite girl to the prom. She’d say yes, then the expensive parts would start ... limo, dinner, flowers, tickets, tux or dress, pictures, after-party. Now the simple act of inviting has risen to the level of a marriage proposal, complete with all the hoopla and expense. Visa’s annual survey says that just asking someone to the prom will average $324 this year, approximately one-third of the $919 total cost. A Google search for “promposals” reveals 447,000 results. On Twitter, @ThePromposal has over 24,000 followers, many of whom have attached a photo or video showing how they did it. Sometimes the request is written inside the lid of a pizza box. Others are as simple as a cake with “Prom?” in the icing. More expensive proposals include rented restaurant signs, highway billboards, even Jumbotrons. Spending on a prompos-

al and the prom isn’t equal across the country. In the South, promposals will average $305, with the prom itself costing $544, totaling $937. In the Midwest, those figures are $218 and $515, for a total of $733. In the Northeast, promposal will average $431, with prom costing $738, for a total of $1,169. Out West, they’re looking at $342 and $596, for a total of $937. Most disturbing, however, is the incomes of families handing over these amounts. In a family with an income under $50,000, cost of prom

and promposal will average $1,109. Under $25,000, and the family will spend an extreme $1,393. But those making over $50,000 will spend only $799. With parents expecting to pay 73 percent of the costs, teens don’t have much incentive to cut expenses. The free Plan’it Prom app helps students and parents make and stick to a budget for the prom (or any other event) by tracking spending as they shop. Look for it on iTunes, Google Play store or www. practicalmoneyskills.com/ prom. The app has timeline, budget and cost-cutting tips. It’s worth considering.

April is National Pet Fisrt Aid Awareness Month Take a minute to review first aid tips so you can care for your pet should an emergency occur Pet First Aid Tips

Do you know what to do during a pet emergency? Here are some common emergency tips: To determine if your cat or dog is dehydrated, pull up on the skin between the shoulder blades. It should spring right back; if it stays tented this is a sign of dehydration. Signs of pet poisoning include bleeding externally or internally, dilated pupils, drooling or foaming at the mouth, seizures or other abnormal mental state or behavior. If your pet has a seizure, make sure it is in a safe place, but do not restrain the animal. Keep your hands away from its mouth as your pet may not know who you are during a seizure and could bite you. Signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion include collapse; body temperature of 104 degrees F or above; bloody diarrhea or vomiting; wobbliness; excessive panting or difficulty breathing; increase heart rate; mucous membranes very red; and increased salivation. Pets bitten by other animals need vet attention to prevent the wound (even if minor) from becoming infected and to check for internal wounds. Never break up a dogfight yourself because you could be bitten. If your pet is bleeding, apply direct pressure using gauze over the bleeding site. If blood soaks through, apply more gauze (do not removed soaked gauze) until you can reach a veterinary hospital. Pet First Aid App More lifesaving information is available on the Red Cross Pet First Aid App that helps dog and cat owners to provide emergency care until veterinary assistance is available. Owners have access to step-by-step instructions, videos and images for more than 25 common first aid emergencies. Check out the Top 5 Features of the Red Cross Pet First Aid App The Pet First Aid App can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross or by going to redcross.org/mobileapps. Pet owners may also take a Red Cross Pet First Aid course so they can practice the skills and receive feedback. People can go to redcross.org/ takeaclass for information and to register. NOW HERE’S A TIP by JoAnn Derson

• With garden centers bursting with spring planting supplies, here’s a handy and fun twine keeper you can make with your kids using two repurposed clay flowerpots with drain holes. Choose a size that can easily fit a ball of twine or thin rope. Set the ball inside and invert one pot on top the other, threading the line through the drain hole of the top pot. Secure with tape or even hot glue. Now you can pull twine through the hole without the ball getting all tangled up! • “If you have a poster that has been rolled up and you want to hang it, try rolling it the opposite way and leaving it overnight. How to Make a Terrarium

1. Choose a glass container. It can be anything from a clean, reused pickle jar to a vintage vase. Just make sure the container is clear and not colored glass, which could hinder growth. Consider the size of the opening as well. Making a terrarium out of a vintage perfume bottle may seem like a creative idea, but the narrow opening may prove problematic when you go to place greenery inside. For beginners, it's best to use a vessel with an opening wide enough to accommodate the width your hand so that you can easily place and move materials as needed. 2. Place a handful of rocks at the bottom of the container. This layer helps to shape the terrain while aiding drainage and aeration. Vary the layer's thickness by the size of the container. The smaller the vessel, the thinner the rock layer; you'll want to leave enough "head space" at the top of the terrarium when you're finished that the setup doesn't look cramped.

ANGOLA PENNYSAVER

your $ $ Turn cans into cash!

3. Soak dried sphagnum or sheet moss in water for a few seconds and squeeze out any excess liquid. Place the slightly damp moss onto the rocks, patting it down so that it fills the entire surface area and forms a barrier that keeps the soil from falling into the rocks.

4. Scoop the soil into a funnel and fill the container with several inches of it. The greenery you'll be planting will determine the type of soil you use. For moss, use a peat moss mixture, which is less likely to mold. For other plants, non-moisture-control potting mix should work. If a plant's nursery tag indicates that it needs a specific type of soil, use that. Keep in mind that this layer doesn't have to be perfectly flat. Hills and valleys give the landscape character. Again, don't fill the container too high with soil, since you'll want to have enough "head space" for the greenery to grow.

•Convenient •No Limit on Returns •Instant Cash Paid

5. Plant your plants. If you're using moss that you snagged from nature, make sure to first give it a blast of pesticide to debug it. Use scissors to trim it into shape and place it into the container. Make sure to press it down firmly to prevent air pockets. For other plants, plant them as you would in your outdoor garden. Loosen the root ball, place in a shallow layer of soil, add soil around it, and pat down. 6. Give the plant some water to help prevent transplant shock, keeping in mind that the container doesn't have drainage holes like a potted plant would. The rocks layer will aid with drainage. Maintaining a terrarium is easy. For moss terrariums, a light misting of water every two to four weeks should suffice. For plant terrariums, heed watering instructions on the plant's nursery tag. Just don't over-water! Original article can be found at www.popularmechanics.com

OPEN YEAR ROUND

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Connor Pawlowski and Jasmine Carter as February’s Members of the Month (MOTM). Every month, Club Staff deliberate and choose members that are trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens at the Club. In addition to having positive character values, the MOTM should participate in a variety of the programs offered at the Club such as sports, games, Daily Challenges, arts and crafts, Power Hour and Project Learn, Cooking Club, Experiment Club, etc. Connor is in fourth grade at J.T. Waugh Elementary and his favorite teacher is Mrs. Wegrzynowski. Science is Connor’s favorite subject, his favorite food is watermelon, and he likes the color blue. Connor’s favorite thing to do at the Club is play football in the gym. When he’s not actively participating at the Club, you can find Connor outside riding his mini-bike. Connor engages in a ton of different activities offered at the Club, he gets along great with all staff and fellow members, and he’s an all-around great kid. Connor is quick to help out with whatever needs to be done, including cleaning up after games, but one thing never varies – you are sure to find a smile on his face no matter what he’s doing! Jasmine was selected for MOTM due to her good-natured personality and extremely friendly and kind character. She is also quick to lend a hand and enjoys every second of assisting the staff. Just like Connor, Jasmine constantly has a smile on her face and is always upbeat. She attends A.J. Schmidt Elementary and is in the fourth grade. Her favorite subject in school is art, so it comes as no surprise that she really loves spending time in the art room at the Club working on different crafts and projects. Jasmine is very active and also really likes playing in the gym both at school and the Club. Jasmine’s favorite food is pizza rolls, a Snack Shack favorite! The teacher she is most fond of is Mrs. Morrison, and pink and purple are her favorite colors. When it comes to reading, her favorite book series is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Also pictured with the Members of the Month is the Club’s Student of the month, Angelina Cosenza. Angelina was chosen to be the Student of the Month because she is very diligent and studious when it comes to getting her work done at the Club, and she even just recently earned enough homework points to enjoy a Pizza Party with some fellow members! While good with her studies, Angelina also takes part in a wide range of Club events and likes hanging out and socializing with her friends. Angelina is in fourth grade at J.T. Waugh Elementary. Mrs. Wegrzynowski is Angelina’s favorite teacher, her favorite subject is math, and she likes apples and the color turquoise. She loves reading the Bad Pet book series and likes to go to the mall in her free time. We are so proud of our student and members of the month, and would like to congratulate them on their achievements! ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You still might have to deal with some lingering confusion that marked a recent workplace situation. But for the most part, you should now be well on your way to your next project. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new commitment might demand more time than you’d expected to have to give it. But rely on that special Bovine gift for patience, and stick with it. You’ll be glad you did. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re earning the admiration of a lot of people who like the way you handle yourself when your views are on the line. Even one or two of your detractors are being won over. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking your responsibilities seriously is what you do. But ease up on the pressure gauge, and make time for much needed R & R. Start by making this weekend a “just for fun” time zone. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some recently uncovered information might make a

change of plans inevitable. If so, deal with it as quickly as possible, and then find out what went wrong and why. What you learn might surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Aspects favor moving carefully and deliberately when making any significant changes. Could be there are more facts you need to know, which you might overlook if you rush things. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A problem neighbor might be looking to goad you into an action you don’t want to take. Ask someone you both respect if he or she would act as an impartial arbitrator for both of you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent workplace accomplishment hasn’t been overlooked by those who watch these things. Meanwhile, start making travel plans for that much-too-long-deferred trip with someone special. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Those money matters continue to

move in your favor. Now would be a good time to start putting some money back into the house, both for esthetic as well as economic reasons. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A changing workplace environment can create job pressures. But, once again, follow the example of your birth sign and take things a step at a time, like the sure-footed Goat you are. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Cheer up. You could soon have the funds you need for your worthy project. Your generous gifts of time and effort are well known, and someone might decide it’s time to join with you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your inner scam-catcher is right on target, and you’re absolutely right to reject that “too good to be true” offer. Meanwhile, something positive should be making its way to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are generous, and also sympathetic to people who find they need the help of others.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

• On April 29, 1429, 17-year-old French peasant Joan of Arc leads a French force in relieving the city of Orleans, besieged by the English. At the age of 16, “voices” of Christian saints told Joan to aid Charles, the French dauphin, in expelling the English from France. • On April 27, 1805, in North Africa, a small force of U.S. Marines marches against Tripoli’s port city of Derna to depose the ruling pasha. The phrase “to the shores of Tripoli,” from the official song of the U.S. Marine Corps, has its origins in the Derna campaign. • On April 28, 1916, Ferruccio Lamborghini, the founder of the company that bears his name, is born in Italy. After experiencing mechanical difficulties with a Ferrari, Lamborghini decided to

start his own rival sports-car company, even hiring a former Ferrari engineer. • On May 3, 1933, James Brown is born. Known as “The Godfather of Soul,” Brown honed his musical talents in prison, where he was to serve 8-16 years for stealing at the age of 15. The Georgia parole board was impressed enough to release him after only three years. • On April 30, 1945, holed up in a bunker under his headquarters in Berlin, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler commits suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head. Soon after, Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allied forces. • On May 1, 1958, President Dwight Eisenhower proclaims Law Day to honor the

role of law in the creation of the United States of America, followed by Congress passing a joint resolution establishing May 1 as Law Day. The idea of a Law Day had first been proposed in 1957 by the American Bar Association. • On May 2, 1972, after nearly five decades as director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover dies. By 1921, the former librarian had amassed a list of 450,000 radical leaders, organizations and publications in the United States. By 1969, Congress had grown suspicious that the FBI might be abusing its authority and passed laws limiting the tenure of future FBI directors to 10 years. (c) 2015 King Synd., Inc.

ANGOLA PENNYSAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Wife Binges on Diet Soda DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife drinks in excess of 3 liters of diet soda a day, sometimes even more. She has colitis, for which she takes Lialda, and on her last visit to her primary care physician, her blood work revealed borderline bad levels in her liver. The doctor seems to think she needs to stop “drinking alcohol,” but I have been married to her for more than 30 years, and I know it’s not drinking that is causing this. We both consume only moderate amounts of alcohol. Could it be the chemicals in diet soda? -- F.J.R. ANSWER: Three liters a day is a lot of diet soda, and that much caffeine probably isn’t good for her. However, I don’t think it is likely to be affecting her liver. Mesalamine (Lialda and others) rarely can cause abnormal liver tests -- specifically, high levels of the same enzymes that might lead a doctor to suspect alcohol use. You didn’t tell me what kind of colitis your wife has, but ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease, is associated with several kinds of liver problems, including fatty liver and primary sclerosing cholangitis, which is potentially severe. I don’t think either alcohol or diet soda should be blamed until she has had a more careful workup. I think a visit with her gastroenterologist would be wise. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read that one or two cups of coffee is good for your brain. Which is better: coffee or tea? Is it the caffeine that prevents dementia? -- M.E.

ANSWER: First of all, the data on this subject is preliminary. That being said, there is data that suggests that people who drink two or three cups of coffee a day have a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers have speculated, and some studies done on lab rats support that it’s the caffeine, and since regular coffee has much more caffeine than tea, coffee would be easier. However, there have been other studies suggesting that substances in tea besides caffeine may reduce Alzheimer’s risk as well. I’m not recommending either coffee or tea based on this research. This data shows an association but doesn’t prove that coffee reduces Alzheimer’s risk. But if it’s your habit to drink a few cups of coffee, or a few pots of tea a day, it may reduce risk of dementia. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: You had an article from a man that said he had his prostate removed and was wondering about taking testosterone. You said he would likely have an increased risk of prostate cancer recurrence. I, too, have had my prostate removed and was wondering how you could have an increased risk of prostate cancer after having the prostate removed. Could you explain? -- C.G. ANSWER: Even the best surgery can leave some prostate tissue in place. It’s also possible that some tumor cells spread before surgery. Any residual cancer can be stimulated, in theory, by taking testosterone. Fortunately, the available evidence so far suggests that this risk may be much lower than feared. Careful follow-up remains essential. ***

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta

Home Management in the Digital Age Home automation is becoming all the rage, but many homeowners balk at rigging up remotely controlled thermostats or security systems because they’re concerned about the cost or about locking into contracts. And some DIY’ers don’t want automation, but they do want to bring a little order into the chaos of home maintenance and improvement. Fortunately, the explosion of mobile apps is making life a bit easier ... and at an affordable price. Here are some of the latest connected devices that aim to make home management, automation and security easier: • BrightNest: This home maintenance app for iOS (think iPhones and iPads) and Android platforms helps you set up a maintenance schedule and offers helpful tips on cleaning and maintenance. Free. (brightnest. com, App Store or Google Play) • Cozi Family: Need to assign chores to the kids or split up home-maintenance tasks? This app can do that. It also syncs with everyone’s device from a single account and has a simple interface. Free. (www.cozi.com, App Store or Google Play)

• HomeZada: This desktop software allows you to make an inventory of all your home’s systems for free. For $59 a year, it gives you maintenance reminders and instructions, a calendar, a remodeling budget tool and more. (www.homezada. com) • Nest: While this startup company’s physical products include a “learning thermostat” and a smoke/ CO detector, both of which can be controlled remotely, it’s also partnering with other tech firms to connect systems in and outside your home -- from your car to your fitness wristband and more. Products can be found online or at home-improvement stores, and start at $99 for the smoke/CO detector. (nest.com) • Notion: This home-sen-

sor system goes beyond the standard security system: It senses pretty much anything you want it to, whether it’s an open garage door, an almost-empty propane tank or a window being lifted. The system sends a message to your smartphone. Sensors along with a necessary WiFi bridge are available on line and start at $129. (getnotion.com) TIP: Home security starts with good maintenance, so make sure windows are in good shape and lock tightly, and install sturdy deadbolts at entrance doors.

COUCH THEATER DVD PREVIEWS By Sam Struckhoff

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Paddington” (PG) -- Alone in London, wandering about with a big floppy hat and raincoat over his fuzzy fur, a talking bear fails to grab much attention, even though he’s the incarnation of everything adorable. The bear is taken in by the Brown family, who name him Paddington after the station where they found him. Stern-but-loving dad (Hugh Bonneville) and open-hearted mom (Sally Hawkins) give Paddington a temporary home while finding him permanent residence and avoiding a conniving taxidermist (Nicole Kidman). Those who have read the books -- or had the books read to them -- will be relieved to find that this actually is a decent, charming Paddington movie. It’s not stupid, it has great visual style, tons of puns and a love for the char- “The Gambler” (R) -- An “The Boy Next Door” (R) -English professor and hard- How bad does a movie have acter. core gambler, Jim Bennett to be before it’s actually fun “The Wedding Ringer” (R) (Mark Wahlberg), is an to watch again?
