The “Walk To End Alzheimer’s®” is a yearly event happening across our nation. On October 5, 2024, a group representing The Friendship Corner Dementia Respite Program from The First Church of Evans participated in the walk at Pt. Gratiot in Dunkirk. During the opening exercises, the walkers were encouraged to raise their particular colored flower to designate their particular colored flower to designate their association with Alzheimer’s. Blue flowers are for people living with the disease. Yellow flowers are for those caring for or supporting those with Alzheimer’s. Purple represents those who have lost someone to Alzheimer’s and the orange flower is for those supporting the association and its research. A white flower was raised at the end of the ceremony to represent the future first person to be cured from Alzheimer’s. We carried our flowers during the walk and placed one in the “Promise Garden”. Those walking gathered donations from friends, family and co-workers to support the Alzheimer’s Association, its research and its goal to cure Alzheimer’s. The walk was less than two miles, so people of all ages and abilities we’re able to make their way along the paved walk route. We walked along the shores of Lake Erie and within the city park at Pt. Gratiot. Many people walked their dogs on leashes and pushed babies in strollers. The weather cooperated with blue skies and sunshine and mild temperatures. After finishing the walk, the Alzheimer’s Association provided grilled hotdogs, cold drinks and popcorn for everyone. There was a sense of celebration and hope at this event; a sense of belonging to something larger than the individuals present. We walked on a Saturday in October in Dunkirk, but many people all across the country were involved with many different walks on different days, but all celebrated the same mission of supporting the cause to cure Alzheimer’s.

Alex Pfeiffer Earns President's Scholarship at Baldwin Wallace University
Alex Pfeiffer of Lake View was among over 660 first-year students welcomed to the Baldwin Wallace University campus this fall who earned more than $12.6 million in merit scholarships. Pfeiffer, a graduate of Frontier Senior High School majoring in music education, earned a $21,000 President's Scholarship based on outstanding academic achievements in high school.
BW's merit scholarships are awarded to full-time students and are renewable for up to four years with good academic and social standing. BW offers a wide range of financial support to its students - more than $60 million for the 2024-2025 academic year.

UAlbany Welcomes Melody LeBeau of Irving as New Student for Fall 2024
The University at Albany is welcoming Melody LeBeau of Irving, NY,for the start of the Fall 2024 semester. LeBeau, who is majoring in Public Administration (MPA), is among some 5,430 new Great Danes to enroll this semester.
More than 2,800 first-year students, from 32,320 applicants, are joining UAlbany's Class of 2028, with 223 students selected to be part of the University's Honors College, and 226 students enrolled as Presidential Scholars.
In addition, more than 1,000 transfer students, including about 200 transfers from the College of Saint Rose, and 1,630 new graduate students are joining the campus community this fall.
The Class of 2028 is among the most diverse in University history, with 55.6 percent coming from historically underrepresented groups. Students also hail from 23 different states and 33 countries. The class boasts an overall high school average of 90.3 percent.

The yearly event of fire prevention was held on October 11th & 12th with the A J Schmidt students grades K to 5 at their neighbor, the Lake Erie Beach Fire Hall. K to 4 students take a walk to the hall and are instructed and reminded of smoke detector locations and maintenance; a safety plan of escape to discuss with their parents; and stop, drop, cover your eyes and roll if needed by Chief Emhof. They are also given an opportunity to see a fireperson in full gear and not be frightened in case they have to experience a fire and call for help. Mike Rosen and Chris Paint crawled around their chairs in gear to simulate a rescue. They had a brief question and answer session and then proceeded to the favorite, the truck walk thru and ambulance view. Each student was given a packet of informational material. Grade 5 is given a special program because they should know all of the above by now. They witnessed a fully involved car fire with a response and knockdown by the volunteers and also given a special packet.
