The Railroads and Farnham, N.Y.
Our photos today are from the John Walker collection of the historical society and are captioned: “March 13, 1915 train wreck at Farnham”. The photo with the toppled train engine included the number “4819” which is the number on the front of the train engine. At this time, we don’t have information regarding the situation. We don’t know which train line was involved or even what may have caused the wreck. We hope you find the photos interesting none-theless.
Fred W. Brinkman (native born in Farnham, N.Y. and lifelong resident until his passing) wrote the following for our 1989 Town of Brant 150th anniversary book: “The opening of the railroad [in Farnham in the year of 1852] was one of the most important developments for the town of Brant as it provided a means for the local people to sell their products in Buffalo and the eastern seaport regions and also provided a means of transportation from New York City to and through Brant for thousands of emigrants who populated not only Western New York, but also the entire central and western United States”. The railroad Fred referred to in his article was the Buffalo and State Line Railroad, later named the Nickel Plate Railroad.
As a result of the railroad activity, the village of Farnham and town of Brant communities expanded and became quite productive with canning factories, hotels, grocery stores, hardware stores, general stores, a shoe store, blacksmiths, churches, schools and more. It was so busy that the village of Farnham once had three train stations - and each had its own depot and freight house! There was the Lake Shore Michigan Southern (L.S.&M.S.) which later became the New York Central Railroad (NYC) (Conrail). There was the Pennsylvania Railroad (now defunct) and the Nickel Plate Railroad later known as the Norfolk & Western Railway (N&W). Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society

We couldn’t resist sharing this article from the Fall 1998 issue of our BRANT - FARNHAM HISTORY newsletter, Vol. IX. Whole No. 35 regarding the achievement of the Brant Firemen’s baseball team! “The Coach” Vincent Fininzio Sr. had written: “The Brant Firemen have finally reached that elusive goal of winning a Championship. Brant had a difficult schedule in the playoffs, first playing a tough Woodlawn team and winning 10-3 with a great defensive game from their infield. The second playoff game proved to be the toughest of the three against Winchester in which Brant was trailing 7-2 after 4 innings. The Brant Bombers finally broke out of their hitting woes and scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to tie the game. The defense tightened up for the second straight game and held Winchester scoreless while Brant scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th for the win of 10-7.
The third game was played at the Woodlawn field against Lake View. Brant scored 5 runs in the 1st inning to take a quick lead. Brant picked up another 5 runs in the 4th to take a commanding lead of 10-0. Brant completed the game with a 12-4 lead to take their FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP!” For extra emphasis he added: “Yeah Baby, Yeah!” Coach Fininzio ended his article by saying “This [1998] season was a total team effort.” Final Results: August 13, 1998 Brant VS Woodlawn at Nike Base 10-3. August 18, 1998 Brant VS Winchester at North Evans 10-7. August 22, 1998 Brant VS Lake View at Woodlawn 12-4.
