Above: The Brant Super Market circa 1982
Right: Casper Taylor of Brant, N.Y. photographed in 1906. According to our local history book, Casper would read aloud the latest Civil War news to the customers in the mid-1800 Brant, N.Y. General Store.
From the Old Photo Album
The local corner store was not only a place to shop for food and necessities, but also a place to meet and visit with neighbors. We are sharing with you a few tidbits of information regarding our corner store (which sadly, is no longer in business), that we discovered in our 1964 Brant history book: “On the southeast corner now occupied by the Brant Supermarket, stood a general store owned by Horatio P. Muffit. He was succeeded by Richard Sherman about 1864. It was in this store that Casper Taylor would sit around the stove reading Civil War news to other customers. John Winter had the store in the 1870’s and Grange meetings were held upstairs. George W. Koehler, William Koehler were subsequent owners and were considered to have one of the best-stocked general stores in the area. The last owners before the building burned in 1917 were Henry and Eugene Bowers. Later, a gas station operated by Sam LaDuca and Clarence DiCenzo, was erected and in 1949, the Brant Supermarket was opened by Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Gervas.”
At the time of this 1982 photo, the owner of the Brant Super Market was John Herc. He had purchased the store from Anthony “Tony” Gervas in 1977. We had a chance to interview John in 2013 and according to him, it was Tony who added the cement block front addition we see today on the building. He also told us that during the “horse and buggy days” the back of the store was once used as a blacksmith shop. John recalled that Clarence DiCenzo owned the Kendall Motor Oil gas station and he told us that inside of the station was a 1950’s style soda fountain shop, serving milkshakes, hamburgers and hot dogs.
Under John’s management the supermarket included a deli, grocery and a meat case stocked with steaks, hamburger and pork chops. He also processed venison, making some of the best venison sausage around. His three children helped him to run the store. In 1990, John Herc sold the store to Mr. and Mrs. Chris Roblaird who owned the store until 1995.
The store sat vacant until 1997 when Judy Peacock purchased it, changing the name to “Pea-Deli”. During Judy’s ownership, counters and a seating area were added for in-store dining. She served breakfast sandwiches, lunch and dinner. Her submarine sandwiches and pizza were very popular! Judy owned the store until 2001.
When Judy made the decision to sell the store, a group of community minded individuals bought shares in the Brant Investment Group (BIG) and the Brant Renaissance Group, Inc. Determined to keep a store in town, the group purchased the store from Judy. After several attempts to find and retain store managers and after encountering a variety of hardships, the Brant Supermarket/Deli, affectionately known as “The Brant Store” eventually closed. Today, the building (no longer a store), is owned by a private individual.

From the Old Photo Album
Found in a donated envelope/postcard/stamp collection (donated by David Ciminesi to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society), was this little tidbit of history which ties the Evans and Brant areas together. We realize that this is not a photo, however, this envelope definitely has some interesting historic value both local and nationwide. For example, notice the envelope is addressed to Mr. Frank Ciminesi Sr., at the address of “Brant, N.Y.” Missing is a street address and zip code and yet, the intended person received this envelope! In 1946, the Brant Postmaster was Mrs. Grace R. Lehley and the Brant Post office was located in Frank Lehley’s Hardware Store at the four corners in Brant. As far as the missing street address – well – we know that Santa Claus receives his mail using only the address of “The North Pole”, so it is possible! The missing zip code in 1946 makes sense, because the U.S. Post Office did not institute the zip code system until July 1, 1963. Perhaps the individual house numbering system was not yet in place in our communities.
The Angola, N.Y. business return address of “Southwestern Blvd. at Pontiac Road” is a bit more descriptive, but still missing a street number and zip code. According to some old advertisements found on fultonhistory.com, Weller’s Service Garage listed their phone number as “Angola 225” and their specialties as “wheel balancing” and “front end alignments”. In addition, they were willing to “pay $500 for any make or model of used car 1941 – 1951 on the purchase of a New Pontiac (any one of three models). Starting pricecompletely equipped 2 door - $2,513.40!!” In other words, with a trade-in of an approved used vehicle, you could have a brand new car for about $2,000. What a difference 60+ years makes! (We also wonder why…the 40cents? Interesting!!)
The Buffalo, N.Y. postal cancellation covering the Thomas Jefferson 3cent postage stamp, is asking us to ”Give” to the “Red Cross War Fund”. The cancel date was April 1, 1946. We have read that the American Red Cross launched a massive campaign for help at the end of WWII. People were proud of their country and it certainly showed. Patriotism was on display everywhere; home, school, business and church; at work and at play. Everyone wanted to do their part to help and by funding the Red Cross they were able to show their support. A Red Cross War Fund Bond stated the following: **"I hereby subscribe to shares in the” 1946 “Red Cross War Fund as my contribution to the work of the Red Cross in disaster relief, prisoner of war services, home front activities, personal aid for servicemen, blood plasma, foreign war relief and rehabilitation." Without a doubt, these were and still are all excellent and worthy causes. **Information on Red Cross War Fund was found at: [http://leeuwerck.blogspot.com/2013/05/my-share-in-1945-red-cross-war-fund.html]
We are enjoying looking through this collection of old envelopes and postcards. We have come across many envelopes from businesses and people in our own town of Brant, as well as those towns surrounding us.

8 Benefits of Print Advertising and why it still works!
1. Tangibility
Print advertising has a unique advantage over digital ads because it offers tangibility. Consumers can touch and hold physical advertisements, making them more memorable and creating a lasting impression. Print advertising is a great way for businesses to build brand recognition and reach new customers who may be less or non-active online.
2. Credibility
In an era where digital advertising is often seen as intrusive and unreliable, print advertising offers a tangible and long-lasting medium that holds staying power with readers. The physical nature of paper ads also adds to their credibility, particularly with older generations who may not trust online ads or be as tech-savvy as younger people born into the digital age. While marketers can use publications and newspapers to create ads that fit seamlessly with the content around them, this level of integration helps build trust and credibility with the reader while giving marketers more space to craft a compelling message.
3. Brand Awareness
Print media, such as magazines or newspapers, can provide a platform for businesses to create memorable and eye-catching ads that help to build brand recognition. Unlike digital ads, which can easily be ignored or skipped, print ads stay in front of the reader and provide a more tangible experience that can leave a lasting impression. Print marketing materials such as brochures or direct mail pieces can also be effective tools for building brand awareness. Research shows that not everyone in the community uses digital media, so businesses can use print ads to reach audiences who might not be as active online.
4. Attention
Unlike digital ads, which can easily be ignored or blocked, print ads have a physical presence that demands the reader’s attention. Print ads can be designed to be eye-catching, with bold colors, striking images, and clever copy that draws the reader in. This attention-grabbing quality is particularly effective in print media like newspapers or magazines. Readers actively seek out content and are likelier to engage with ads that catch their eye.
5. Personalization
Print advertising also provides an opportunity for personalization, allowing businesses to create targeted messages that resonate with specific audiences. Print ads can be placed in publications that cater to a particular demographic or geographic region, helping businesses to reach their target market more effectively. Print marketing materials, such as brochures or direct mail pieces, can also be tailored to specific customers, providing a more personalized experience that can help to build brand loyalty.
6. Targeting
A key reason print advertising still works is its ability to target specific audiences effectively. Ads can be placed in publications or newspapers read by a particular demographic or geographic region, allowing businesses to reach their target market more effectively. This targeted approach is particularly beneficial for local print advertising, where businesses can reach out to customers in their area with promotions or sales. Print materials like direct mail or brochures can also reach a specific audience. Such as existing customers or potential leads. This targeted approach is only sometimes possible with digital advertising, which can be seen by a broader audience but may not reach the intended target market.
7. Longevity
Print ads, unlike their digital counterparts that disappear instantly, have a longer lifespan and can be referred to multiple times. Print ads can be kept in magazines or newspapers, or posted on bulletin boards, ensuring that a wide audience sees them over an extended period. This staying power makes print ads effective for building brand awareness and driving sales.
8. Multi-Sensory Experience
Finally, print advertising provides a multi-sensory experience that digital ads cannot replicate. The paper’s texture, the ink’s smell, and the sound of the pages turning can all contribute to a more immersive experience that engages the reader on multiple levels. This multi-sensory experience can create a more memorable impression, making print ads more effective at building brand awareness and driving sales.
How Can you Help “Keep Print Alive”?
Since our founding in 1930, The Angola Pennysaver has been a FREE community newspaper. However, original content and creative pieces we pride ourselves on sharing with you takes a great deal of time, hard work and money to produce. In the past, advertising has been our primary means of support, but the revenue we get from advertising has been falling as advertisers attempt to draw business from digital platforms. We are here to say “PRINT IS ALIVE!” and the support from readers like you is more important than ever.
While we are extremely appreciative for the support from our loyal advertisers, we must swallow our pride and ask you, our readers to please consider supporting The Angola Pennysaver so we can continue to bring you the best in local news, community events, and original content.
Your support makes a big impact in allowing us to continue to provide an outlet for our local business owners and their consumers to connect. Every little bit helps! Donations may be mailed or dropped off to The Angola Pennysaver, 19 Center Street, Angola NY 14006. We also accept all major credit cards.
We’d like to personally thank you!
Please include your name and address with your donation.
As always, we can’t thank you enough for your patronage & friendship. We kindly encourage you to support the small businesses featured in our publicaiton. They are the backbone of success in our community.

Farnham School Memories
When publishing our anniversary history books quite a few families had responded to our request for family histories and information. We can learn so much about “the way things were” from these wonderful stories. Fond memories of the “Farnham School Days” seemed to be a favorite subject.
In 2014, Woody and Edie Widmer wrote: “[The] Farnham School held many memories. The classes were small. The teachers and principal knew all of the students (which sometimes proved to be a disadvantage!) Lunch in the cafeteria always included home-made meals - roast beef, turkey, macaroni and cheese, etc, cooked by Laura Totaro and if you volunteered in the kitchen, the lunch was free! After lunch students went to the gym and danced to all the latest hits. The high point on weekends was roller-skating in the gym. Almost everyone in Farnham knew how to roller skate.”
Judy Groh Smith shared her memories with us as well. She reminisced: “I was lucky enough to attend Farnham elementary school for 6, 7 and 8th Grade (1951-1954). Many of us had attended the small one and two room rural schools. When Farnham School opened we were all thrilled. It was a beautiful, big, new school with a grand, all glass, entrance. We were so proud. Tut Everhart was our principal. Chris Small was our bus driver. The bus was kept in the garage next to Evans 12. Our route started before Bennett Beach and was long but we enjoyed our time together. The teaching staff was strong. Mrs. Netherling, the 7th grade teacher, always kept us busy and interested. We all liked and respected Mrs. Belko. We never wanted to let her down. The cafeteria food was home cooked and good. Best of all was a brand new big gym/cafeteria/auditorium that wonder of wonders transformed into a skating rink! That skating rink was a great bonus for a little town.”
Our historical society believes that we certainly couldn’t have described the “Farnham School Days” any better than this!
