Although today’s “photo” is actually an advertisement from the Town of Brant history book of 1964, we thought it was an interesting historical item to share. The speedway, advertised as North Collins, N.Y., was physically located in Brant, N.Y. In September 2019, we had mentioned that Mr. Jim Cardamone donated a 1967 North Collins Speedway program book to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society. As promised, we are going to share some of the contents with you.
The inside cover of this 1967 program book lists the North Collins Speedway track officials as: President & Race Director - Art Clark, Starter - Dave Sutton, Pit StewardClark Rice, Announcer - Rick Bennett, Scorer - Rosemary Bennett, Safety Inspector - Frank Wagner, Line Up ManWillie Schroeder and Business Mgr. - William E. Kalenda.
The “DRIVER OF THE WEEK” was 32 year old Butch Hoffman of Chaffee, N.Y. He won this title because of “his Super Bomb feature victory”. He is also in the #3 spot of the Super Bomb point standings. PIT STOP comments by Rick Bennett add: “Butch Hoffman must have had at least one or two tigers in his tank on August 11th. He won the Super Bomb feature race with complete ease. It was his first feature winner of the season at North Collins Speedway.”
The North Collins Speedway Point Standings as of August 11th, 1967 were posted for two categories. The SUPER BOMBS - the top 3 of 30 total listed are car #7 Cliff Norton of Hamburg with 265 pts., car #65 Bill Torrisi of Kenmore with 205 pts. and car #1 Butch Hoffman of Chaffee with 195 pts. The SEMI-LATE MODELS - the top 3 of 63 total listed are car #3ACES Don Wylie of Buffalo with 224 pts., car #311 Laverne Pangrazio of Byron with 195 pts. and car #82 Don Belzile of East Aurora with 134 pts. Local North Collins drivers in the point standings are: car #19 Stroker McGurk, car #4 Frank Boice and car #14 Al DiCarlo. In addition to over 10 pages of advertisements of gas, oil, tires, auto parts, racing equipment, insurance, printers, collision shops, restaurants, farm related businesses and car dealerships offering makes and models of Chrysler, Plymouth, Chevy, Buick, Pontiac, Dodge and Ford, the program book also listed an announcement that “25 kids will receive free rides around the track with favorite driver on Friday, August 25, 1967!”

Steven “Vinnie” Jaworek of Angola, NY, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025 in Buffalo Mercy Hospital, he was 99. He was the loving husband of Anna (Schultz) Jaworek for 25 years before she passed in 1975. He shared life with his beloved companion Linda Valetta for 33 years until her passing. He was the beloved father of Thomas (Donna), Gary (Joanne), Sherry (Brad) Hirschman, and Patricia Jaworek. He is survived by 11 Grandchildren: Lindsay, Steven, Tommy, Olivia, Jacqueline, Meredith, Jillian, Carly, Jacob, Scot and Anna, and 15 adoring great grandchildren. He was born in Gowanda N.Y. and moved to Erie PA. with his family of 7 siblings. He was preceded in death by his three sisters Sophie, Loretta, Helen, and three brothers Henry, Edmund and Chester. Steve was a standout football player for Erie Academy High School and led the City League of high schools in points scored as a running back and kicker. He continued his love for the sport by playing football in college. During WW II Steve proudly served his country as a U.S. Air Force mechanic and later while stationed in Guam as a bomber engineer (Master Sergeant). After his military service Steve earned his B.S degree in physical education and a teaching certificate in secondary science at Lock Haven State College. He continued to advance his education by amassing over 60 hours of graduate credit at Canisius, Buffalo State College and University of Buffalo. Steve began his teaching career at Lake Shore Central High School in 1958. During his 30-year career he taught classes in Phys Ed, Science, Math, Health and Special Education. He also enjoyed coaching the Eagles baseball, football and wrestling teams while developing student athletes. Steve had numerous interests beyond his passion for teaching. He took an active part in community organizations specifically: Scouting, Little League baseball, church affairs and
village activities. As a devout parishioner of Most Precious Blood Church, he was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Knights of Columbus. He also belonged to the Chamber of Commerce of Evans and Brant and the Lake Shore Central Teachers’ association. His daily philosophy offers the clearest insight into his character; “Thank God every day for what you have.” and “Spread a little sunshine by recognizing somebody by asking how they are or saying something nice to them.” The family will be present to receive friends on Friday March 28th, from 4PM-7PM at the Addison Funeral Home, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday March 29th at 9:30AM in Most Precious Blood Church, Angola, NY (PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH). The old wooden Farnham Grammar School (Brant District No. 5) located on the corner of Commercial Street and Erie Road, was completely destroyed by fire in the middle of the night on January 14, 1946. The very next morning, Principal Russell Everhart and Mr. Wallace Ormsby, District Superintendent, asked Pastor Voss of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church for the use of the Church’s Parish Hall for classrooms. The response was “Yes” and thus grades 1, 2, 3 and 4 (about 70 children) attended classes in this hall. Additional classes were held in the Farnham Fire Hall. Almost immediately, the planning began for a new school building on the same lot as the previous school.
Records show that by September 1947 Farnham District No. 5 students had a brand new brick school building, to replace their old wooden schoolhouse. The one floor plan had rooms for eight grades, a combination gymnasium and assembly room, nurse’s office, a kitchen, Principal’s office, a library and a special kindergarten room.
The photos today are of the official ground breaking ceremonies in anticipation of the new approximately $300,000 brick elementary school. Three people are identified in the one photo (from our view L-R): six year old Carol G. Voss, first grade pupil, is in front holding the American flag with Robert K. Glass to her right holding the handle of the shovel. To the right of Mr. Glass is Charles H. Berns, chairman of the School Board. Farnham Mayor Louis DeMarco, District Supt. Wallace W. Ormsby, Mr. Glass and Mr. Berns were among the speakers that day. The American flag was raised as AMERICA was sung. On July 3rd, 1979 the “new” brick Farnham School closed. The building was demolished in 2007. A Dollar General store is currently located on that corner lot.

This interesting story was written by Sherman Falk a few years back for our September 25, 2013 issue of “Brant-Farnham History Vol. XIII Whole No. 46”. It was included in our “Memories” section. His story is about an emergency landing of an airplane in the town of Brant and we think you will enjoy Sherman’s well told tale. The photo does not really pertain to the story - other than the fact that is the author – Sherman Falk - in the pilot seat!
Sherman wrote: “In the early stages of World War II (1940’s) a Canadian twin engine airplane believed to be a DeHaviland was forced to make an emergency landing at the Angola Airport. The airport was located on Hardpan Road in the Township of Brant. Located at the airport was a tower with a rotating beacon which was a navigation aid to aircraft. The aircraft involved in this incident had evidently got off course and entered United States airspace. Being at night and getting low on fuel the situation was getting quite serious when they saw the beacon. Knowing that an airport existed, they chose to make a gear up landing, not knowing the conditions on the ground.
The pilot, considering all conditions made an exceptional belly landing, with only minor damage to the aircraft’s structure and no injury to flight personnel. Of course during this type of landing the propellers of the aircraft were badly damaged. After inspection of the engines, a decision was made to replace them. This of course took considerable time to get replacement engines and equipment to complete the operation.
After the repairs were completed, the aircraft was moved to Rte. 20 on a Sunday morning. Traffic on the highway was stopped so the aircraft could take off. I recall standing in the front yard of my parent’s home and listening to the drone of the engines, as they pre-flighted them prior to take off. Once the aircraft was airborne and climbed above the tree line, it was visible to me as it started on its journey back to its home base.
At this point, I would like to say “thanks” to Bertha Notaro for her input. She told me that one of the men on the airplane married a girl from Angola. Also Bertha assisted in defining the time and season of the event; teams were bowling at Pero’s Lanes. This places it at early evening and likely the fall season. ~ Sherman Falk ~ ”
Sherman was an enthusiastic member of our historical society for a number of years. He was born on November 17, 1925 and was raised in the town of Brant. His brothers were Ernest, Augustus and Edward Falk.
