Richard “Dick” Spoth
Richard “Dick” Spoth of Angola, NY entered into rest on March 10, 2025. Beloved husband of the late Delores L. (Kasperczyk) Spoth; dear father of Richard C. (Dina) Spoth, Jeanne (Robert) Macko, James Spoth and Kimberly (Matthew) Frost; grandfather of Rachel and Eric; brother of Carole (late William) Walters and Barbara (Stan) Dunn. Survived by nieces and nephews. Captain Richard "Dick" Spoth was a man defined by courage, service, ingenuity, and an unwavering dedication to helping others. His story began with his enlistment in the U.S. Army, where Dick served valiantly as a member of the elite Airborne Green Beret Special Forces. He rarely spoke about his experiences in Vietnam, choosing instead to quietly carry the weight of his sacrifices. Dick was awarded several honors for his bravery and commitment, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Parachute Badge. Returning home, Dick didn't shy away from hard work. He spent time as a longshoreman before transitioning to a role as a Lineman for New York State Electrical & Gas, where his skill and dedication earned him the distinction of becoming the first lineman promoted into the engineering department. His entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to open his own business specializing in residential wiring, later expanding to pump stations and traffic signals. This laid the foundation of which became Spoth Enterprises, Inc. which became a family business with Delores at the helm and his sons and daughter specializing in traffic signals, street lighting and power line distribution.
Dick and Delores met at Flying Tigers and were married on July 17, 1971, shortly after they met. Together they built a loving family with their children Rick, Jeanne, James, and Kimberly and later grandchildren Rachel and Eric.
Dick was known for his ability to spot opportunities and seize them—even if it meant explaining later. This adventurous spirit led him to purchase his first dive charter boat for Lake Erie without his wife Delores's knowledge, humorously
attempting to disguise it as "lawnmower parts." Though the story didn't convince Delores, it became one of the family’s cherished anecdotes. Passionate about helping others, Dick established his first TowBoatUS port in Western New York at Sturgeon Point Marina with eventually a second location in the Buffalo Small Boat Harbor, providing invaluable assistance to boaters in distress. His reputation for always being ready to help earned him the affectionate nickname "Batman" from one Coast Guard personnel, known for showing up whenever someone was in trouble. Dick was presented with various awards and accolades for life saving service on Lake Erie, including the prestigious Captain David P. Dobbin's award issued by the US 9th Coast Guard District. Dick's experience and training allowed him to hold his USCG Merchant Marine Master of Towing up to 100 Gross Tons upon the Great Lakes, Inland Waters and Western Rivers.
Dick also deeply valued community and service beyond his business. He and Delores became some of the first medical emergency technicians (METs), the predecessor to today's EMT's, in the early 70s, proudly serving as members of the Lancaster Volunteer Ambulance Corp. In 1981, Dick joined the Lake Erie Beach Volunteer Fire Co, eventually serving as Assistant Chief and Chief. He strongly believed in education, eagerly attending courses around the country including advanced safety and technical rescue. Dick’s commitment to lifelong learning inspired many when he hosted those classes locally for others to attend.
To his family, Dick was a loving husband, father and grandfather whose actions always spoke louder than words. His children witnessed firsthand his unwavering dedication and resilience. His signature humor, humility, and genuine concern for others shaped their lives profoundly. Dick's legacy is defined by bravery, integrity, innovation, and unwavering service to his community. He leaves behind a story rich with adventure, generosity, and boundless determination—a true captain, leader, and quiet hero whose life continues to inspire all who knew him.
The family will receive friends on Sunday March 16, 2025 from 4-7PM at the Latimore Schiavone Funeral Home, Inc. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial Monday March 17, 2025 10AM at Most Precious Blood Church Angola, NY.

Military Veterans of Holy Cross Church, Farnham, N.Y.
Written in 1964, the 100 year anniversary booklet of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Farnham, N.Y., states that the old wooden church building was completely destroyed by fire on August 18, 1930. As the church building in this photograph is the older church, we know the photo was taken prior to the date of the fire. The photo appears to be honoring members of Holy Cross Church who were serving or had served in various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

A few pages further we read that “with the entrance of the United States into World War II, many of young men (33 in all) were called into the armed services of our nation.” Four boys of the congregation gave their lives in this war: and “the four casualties were: Edward Stuering lost at sea October, 1942. Raymond Koch lost his life in North Africa. Edward Schrader was killed in action September, 1944. Howard Nordblum died of wounds received in the invasion of Luzon in the Philippines on January 19, 1945.”
During WWII, in addition to those mentioned previously, the community also mourned the loss of two young men born and raised in the Village of Farnham: Salvatore Battaglia and Michael Graci. Although not members of the Holy Cross Church, they were members of the Farnham community and in recognition of their sacrifice for us, we felt it essential to mention their names.
The Military photo shown today is from our John Walker collection. At this time, we do not have the names of those pictured. Perhaps some of our readers will be able to provide a name or two after careful review. In closing, we would be deeply remise if we did not mention that we are ever mindful and grateful for each of our Veterans who have willingly and ever so courageously served our country. It is because of the sacrifices of these brave men and women that each of us are able to enjoy our freedoms today.

Labels of The Erie Preserving Company, Brant, NY
In 1873 the Fenton family founded the Erie Preserving Company at Brant, N.Y. It was located on the Milestrip Road, west of the Delaware Creek. This was the first canning plant in Erie County. Six other plants were later added: Farnham (1876), Irving (1900) (this plant was located on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation), North Collins, Buffalo (77-95 Ohio Street), and two others also in New York State. The Erie Preserving Company became one of the leading concerns of its kind in the state. In those days, everything had to be done manually; making cans, peeling and preparing the fruits and vegetables for processing. Cans were made from sheets of tin cut into strips that were as wide as the height of the can, by a pair of shears that were worked by the foot. The tops and bottoms were made of a die, sides bent into shape and soldered and tops and bottoms soldered by the tinmen. As many as 500 to 700 complete cans were made in a day. The company preserved all kinds of fruits and vegetables: strawberries, raspberries, peaches, pears, pie plant (rhubarb), apples, peas, lima beans, tomatoes, plums, corn, squash and pumpkin. The women were employed to peel the fruit and prepare vegetables for processing. Records show that at one time a railroad carload of 400 cases of canned goods were shipped each day. The company provided a source of income for the farmers and employment for many in the area.
The 1909 New Century Atlas of Erie County N.Y. highlights many of the town of Brant farms. This narrative of Martin Farms is an example: “MARTIN FARMS ...containing 250 acres, owned by George L. Martin. These farms are located in lots 7, 8 and 9 on the Milestrip Road. Its principal revenues are as follows: 30 acres of raspberries and strawberries, about 18 horses are supported on the place and 150 to 200 tons of hay are cut from its meadows. Wheat, corn, oats, potatoes, beans, peas and tomatoes for the canning factory* and 35 acres of medium timber is a fair representation of a farm ranking among the best farms of the town and county.” The canning factory* mentioned in this farm description would be the Erie Preserving Company.

8 Benefits of Print Advertising and why it still works!
1. Tangibility
Print advertising has a unique advantage over digital ads because it offers tangibility. Consumers can touch and hold physical advertisements, making them more memorable and creating a lasting impression. Print advertising is a great way for businesses to build brand recognition and reach new customers who may be less or non-active online.
2. Credibility
In an era where digital advertising is often seen as intrusive and unreliable, print advertising offers a tangible and long-lasting medium that holds staying power with readers. The physical nature of paper ads also adds to their credibility, particularly with older generations who may not trust online ads or be as tech-savvy as younger people born into the digital age. While marketers can use publications and newspapers to create ads that fit seamlessly with the content around them, this level of integration helps build trust and credibility with the reader while giving marketers more space to craft a compelling message.
3. Brand Awareness
Print media, such as magazines or newspapers, can provide a platform for businesses to create memorable and eye-catching ads that help to build brand recognition. Unlike digital ads, which can easily be ignored or skipped, print ads stay in front of the reader and provide a more tangible experience that can leave a lasting impression. Print marketing materials such as brochures or direct mail pieces can also be effective tools for building brand awareness. Research shows that not everyone in the community uses digital media, so businesses can use print ads to reach audiences who might not be as active online.
4. Attention
Unlike digital ads, which can easily be ignored or blocked, print ads have a physical presence that demands the reader’s attention. Print ads can be designed to be eye-catching, with bold colors, striking images, and clever copy that draws the reader in. This attention-grabbing quality is particularly effective in print media like newspapers or magazines. Readers actively seek out content and are likelier to engage with ads that catch their eye.
5. Personalization
Print advertising also provides an opportunity for personalization, allowing businesses to create targeted messages that resonate with specific audiences. Print ads can be placed in publications that cater to a particular demographic or geographic region, helping businesses to reach their target market more effectively. Print marketing materials, such as brochures or direct mail pieces, can also be tailored to specific customers, providing a more personalized experience that can help to build brand loyalty.
6. Targeting
A key reason print advertising still works is its ability to target specific audiences effectively. Ads can be placed in publications or newspapers read by a particular demographic or geographic region, allowing businesses to reach their target market more effectively. This targeted approach is particularly beneficial for local print advertising, where businesses can reach out to customers in their area with promotions or sales. Print materials like direct mail or brochures can also reach a specific audience. Such as existing customers or potential leads. This targeted approach is only sometimes possible with digital advertising, which can be seen by a broader audience but may not reach the intended target market.
7. Longevity
Print ads, unlike their digital counterparts that disappear instantly, have a longer lifespan and can be referred to multiple times. Print ads can be kept in magazines or newspapers, or posted on bulletin boards, ensuring that a wide audience sees them over an extended period. This staying power makes print ads effective for building brand awareness and driving sales.
8. Multi-Sensory Experience
Finally, print advertising provides a multi-sensory experience that digital ads cannot replicate. The paper’s texture, the ink’s smell, and the sound of the pages turning can all contribute to a more immersive experience that engages the reader on multiple levels. This multi-sensory experience can create a more memorable impression, making print ads more effective at building brand awareness and driving sales.
