Welcome to the World Carp Classic It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you all to the World Carp Classic 2010.
When I first set out all those years ago to hopefully provide something new and special to the world of carp angling, I could never have envisaged in my wildest dreams that it would become the truly global event that it has. Neither could I have imagined that it could ever create the excitement, and generate the electricity and ambience that it does. More importantly, it gives me enormous pride to know that the title of World Carp Classic Champions is so very highly regarded, from all quarters of the globe. Such is the camaraderie among anglers that the event has become so much more than being just about the fishing, it has become a celebration of carp angling, an annual festival to look forward to. This aspect I can lay no claim to, as that is all down to the attitude of the participants, and I’m extremely pleased to say that many, lasting friendships are forged during the event. It is with this in mind that I would like to thank each and every one of you – it is you who makes this event so very special. This year, the competition has once again metamorphosed, with the addition of qualifying events. Led by the increasingly huge demand for places and to keep the event as fair, balanced and inclusive as possible, the National Qualifiers were born.
‘My congratulations go to all of the anglers who have won through via the qualifiers’

Presenting the WCC team 2010
The World Carp Classic requires a hard working, dedicated team to ensure its seamlessly smooth operation, and that is not just during the few short days of the competition. There is a huge amount of hard work that goes on all year round, culminating in a massive effort in preparation in the few
days prior to the competition and again afterwards. Without the help and hard work of the fantastic WCC Team and support help, the competition would quite simply not happen. I am very proud of the 2010 WCC Team and would like to present them to you here with my deepest thanks.
I know that I speak on behalf of the whole WCC Team when I say that we all look forward to meeting everyone in person, and we hope that the 2010 competition will be one which creates great memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Welcome to Madine A warm welcome to you all from JRC, Title Sponsor of the World Carp Classic 2010
A
great welcome and hopefully a fantastic fishing experience for all competitors in the 2010 World Carp
Classic. If the last two years are anything to go by, contestants should be prepared for some excellent fishing and they stand a very good chance of catching some record-size specimen carp. As title sponsor, JRC - as part of the Pure fishing international group - supports this event and deeply believe in it as a fabulous tool to promote carp fishing on a worldwide level. With the competition steadily growing in stature and popularity over the years, against the organisers wishes, it was in danger of becoming somewhat exclusive, and to them this was unacceptable. Thankfully, the WCC Team thought the matter through carefully and introduced qualifying matches for the very first time.
‘We will once again spend time with good friends from around the world, and share our passion for the sport’
This move has preserved the ethos of the competition as being a truly open event, where anyone and everyone is given the opportunity to step forward and fish for their country. This has meant that in just a very short space of time, one of our most harboured dreams has come to fruition, as the WCC has become a true, worldwide carp angling tournament. But, as we all know, the World Carp Classic is much more than that, and it has become an entity within itself as a global celebration of carp angling. During this week, we will once again gather to spend some time with good friends from around the world and this event is just a fabulous opportunity for all of us to share our fishing experiences and our passion for the sport. Lac de Madine is an excellent venue for such a competition and we would like to give special thanks to the local people who

support us and provide us with access to such a magnificent jewel in nature’s crown. We are very excited and delighted to drive this event forward with all other sponsors, and unconditionally support Ross and his hard working WCC team. Ahead of us all lays a fabulous few days, with many nice surprises hopefully coming our way. We hope that you will all have a great time and we wish you all the very best - enjoy the event, meet some new fishing friends and catch some beautiful Madine carp too. As we say in Pure fishing and JRC: “Live to fish”. I am very proud to welcome, once more, all participants taking part in Europe’s greatest Carp tournament: The World Carp Classic...

Shuttleworth and Sparsholt Colleges, the WCC event marshals For many years now, College Students have been the official Event Marshals. These young men and women are undergoing Fisheries courses at their respective Colleges and, along with a few of their Tutors, play a very important role throughout the event. Initially, and prior to the event, the Students kindly provide much needed help in setting up the hall, HQ and a variety of other tasks... and all that before undertaking their main duties as Event Marshals. Then, whether it is guiding anglers to their swims, helping to move the
mountains of tackle or weighing and recording carp caught at ungodly hours around the clock, they have proven to be invaluable each and every year. It doesn’t even end there for them, either, as after the event they clear rubbish from the banks and hall area, uninstall staging, and collect signage and a multitude of other tasks! Unquestionably, they fully deserve everyone’s respect and gratitude for giving up their time to attend, and we are very pleased to say that generally, they get it! It is with the greatest of pleasures that we once again welcome the Students of Shuttleworth and Sparsholt Colleges and we hope that you, the anglers, will assist them in every way possible to make their task as easy as possible and help them to ensure that the event runs smoothly.

By respecting the rules and other anglers, you’ll help to create a fair and enjoyable competition, says Andy Chambers
F
irst of all, welcome to those who are fishing this great competition for the first time. I hope that you really enjoy the special atmosphere in the lead up to the event and that you fish well and catch some of those beautiful Madine carp. As Head Marshall for the event I just want to highlight a few of the rules and it will also be a good reminder to those who have fished in the event in previous years. There is a long list of rules but that is a necessity for an event of this stature to ensure fair play and, most of all, the safety of all competitors. If you have a query or need some clarification of a rule, then please ask either myself or one of my Marshalls.
Distance..
The maximum distance you may fish to is 200 metres. This has been an issue in previous events but last year saw the introduction of distance markers for the first time, and I was very happy with the results. I know that some competitors were moaning about them beforehand, in the forum, but they did the job and did not interfere with anyone’s fishing. The results also showed that being very strict on distance did not affect the carp as, more, and bigger fish were caught than in previous events. The markers will be back again this year and I will come down hard on any competitor who thinks they can break this rule and try to cheat. I don’t want to disqualify anyone but I have done in the past and will do so in the future, if required, so be warned.
Boats..
Just a couple of points here. There is a list of requirements for the boat check as this is important for safety. Please read this section carefully to ensure that you have everything on the list before getting your boat checked and keep them in your boat during the event. You can only use the boat for fishing, echo sounding, looking around your swim once the competition has started. You may use a boat to get to your swim with your equipment also, but that is it. When the competition starts one competitor must always be on the bank, a competitor and a runner may

Safety first: Always wear your life jacket..
go out in the boat but never both competitors. Also, remember that your runner can only steer and manage the boat, he cannot take part in the fishing side, netting etc.
Weed
The weed situation on the lake changes year by year and some areas will be weedier than others. This can make fishing the swim more difficult but, generally speaking, the weed will hold and attract fish. If a swim is not fishable then I will pull it from the draw, however, a lot of the weed is floating around after the weed cutter has done its job and can turn up in new areas after strong winds during the event. If you do find weed rafts etc in your swim and you need to get out over them, then the easiest way is to row over them rather than trying to use your outboard.
Rubbish
This year, can you all ensure that you take all of your bags of rubbish away
you at the end of the match. ‘Fish well, with There are plenty of containers around the lake, at the car park and at the respect boat depart/arrive areas. There was far too much left last year for others to those clear up after you, if bags of rubbish are found in your swim there will be fishing penalties. Madine is also being more around environmentally friendly this year and needs to recycle more rubbish, so you and watch out for details of this. any fish Summary Well that’s just about me done. I look that you forward to seeing you all at the event catch, as whilst fishing as I will try to get around during the week to see as many of you fish care as possible. Fish well, respect those fishing around you and any fish that you is very catch, as fish care is very important. the Marshals in your section as important’ Respect they are my eyes and ears and, above all, have fun and enjoy the World Carp Classic 2010, and you wnever know, you may be this year’s winners.
Magazine sponsored by Pescalis
Always remember to wear your lifejacket every time you go out in the boat. Last year also saw me putting out temporary bans on the use of boats for short periods of time because of the storms and very strong winds on the lake. This decision was not taken lightly and did not go down too well with some competitors as a few swims were sheltered and okay, but I cannot make a swim by swim decision and I have to be fair to everyone. Safety is the number one issue here, and even in one of the safety boats with a petrol engine it was difficult in the waves, so with a dinghy and electric engine it would have been impossible. Hopefully, the situation won’t happen this year, but the weather is unpredictable and if the lake becomes dangerous again because of the winds I will do the same, so please be patient if it does happen.

WCC winners 2009
Catch of the year 2009 S
STEVE Tom, first off, huge congratulations to you and Rob on your outstanding success! TOM Thanks, Steve. I must say it has been really hectic for us both since winning the event and although it was impossible to keep up with all of the text messages and emails from all of the kind well-wishers, we want everyone to know that we both really appreciated them. STEVE Okay, let’s take it from the peg draw, Tom. Did you have a list of pegs that you favoured above others, and how did you go about selecting them? TOM We carried out extensive groundwork, asking anglers who regularly fished on Madine lots of questions and finding out as much information as possible. We plotted out a map, charting where fish had been caught from, including those from the year before, and using the information gathered we built a hit-list of pegs we wanted. There were around 58 prime swims that we really liked, and another 28 middle-order pegs that were ok. We didn’t fancy any of the remaining pegs and had agreed that if we drew one of those we would put it back and hope

for something better on our second draw. Rob drew the first pot and it was one of our middle-order pegs, ATT peg 2, and Rob said “what do you want to do?” Knowing by this stage that there were a lot of really good pegs still left in there, I said “gamble”. I put my hand deep into the bag, trying to avoid picking out one of the previously rejected pegs, praying that the gamble would pay off. When it was announced that our peg was in the Pescalis section I was happy, but it wasn’t until we had left the stage that it dawned upon me which peg it was! It was actually a bit unnerving as, although it was a fancied swim, there was no guarantee at all that any fish would be there. There are far too many aspects that can influence where they’ll be to be too confident, and in some respects, the pressure was on. Nothing is decided at the peg draw, and contrary to popular belief, the peg that we drew was not the peg that the competition was won from in 2008. Ours was the peg alongside it, with the winning peg from last year now being occupied by two French anglers.
STEVE It’s fair to say that some anglers are not flexible enough to take full advantage of a situation and arriving at a venue with an inflexible approach or tactics can often lead to failure. With that flexibility in mind, do you feel that Cheque this out! this aspect put a few more fish on the The boy’s £10,000 bank for you? winnings TOM Yes, definitely. We had every possible situation covered. For instance, we had bottle floats and floating braid which we had to use on one rod, to keep the line high in the water to avoid it being dragged into snags by kiting fish. On that particular rod, I was targeting an area of water that www.pescalis.com was just over one meter deep, and as such I felt that some rigs could be too obvious, ultimately spooking the fish. For that rod, the ideal solution was at hand, a weed effect rig that myself, Kevin Garratt and Martin Locke of Solar tackle have been developing over the past two years. The weed effect components

World Carp Classic Champions 2009 Tom DuncanDunlop and Rob Tough had barely recovered from lifting the World Carp Classic title before WCC magazine Editor, Steve Howard, interviewed Tom. Here’s what transpired include hair rigs, leads, lead core and chod rigs, and are absolutely devastating when used in this situation. Unfortunately, we lost what would have been the first fish of the competition on that rod when it kited and left my hook lodged in the woodwork! So, adapting to the situation, the bottle float was employed from then on, and it worked extremely well as there were a lot of tree stumps out in that area. We both agreed that we would ease into things and avoid going out in the boat potentially disturbing the swim, and used Rob’s Baitboat with graphic sounder to position our baits for that first night. We were fortunate that our peg was quite a bit above water level, as that allowed us to clearly see the holes and channels in the weed. On day two we decided to go out and see if we could determine some better spots to fish to but, talking to Rob on the 2-way radio, it was mostly flat and uninteresting until he found an area of broken ground. That proved to be a very good spot right through the competition. It helped immensely that Rob and I are not just angling partners, but very good friends
too. It’s at times like that where you need the back-up that only a true friend can give you. We drove each other on, helping each other through it in the most difficult times, and where it would have been very easy for me to ease up, I drove myself on. “There’s plenty of time for sleep when I’m dead” I kept telling myself. STEVE Would it be fair to say that there have been anglers in the past who were in a position where they could have won, but ultimately didn’t because they lacked the drive and application to do so?
complacent or over confident. Rob was a little more receptive to the notion that we were going to win it, but I wanted that rocket to go up before I would believe it! With about 15 minutes left until the rocket went up, I was in and out of the water retrieving sacked carp for the press. After releasing the last one, the marshals and press guys started to do a
George Cross right across the lake back to base. STEVE At the presentation ceremony it was obvious that Rob, in particular, was feeling the emotion of the moment. It was obviously a very proud moment for you both, but how would you describe it, Tom? TOM I was so proud to be up there, singing along to our national anthem with everyone joining in, it was amazing. It was all a bit surreal, to be honest, and very hectic. In fact, it wasn’t really until around 5.30am the following morning that it really sunk in. I quietly sneaked out of the gite and walked down to the lake to get some sunrise photos. At that moment, with nobody around and looking up into the sky, I thanked the person looking down on me and thought to myself ‘Man, what a result, you’ve done it, you’re a World Carp Classic champion’. STEVE What a feeling that must be, Tom – Thanks for sharing your story with us!
‘There’s p time to sleep wh lenty of en dead, I kept tell I’m ing myself’
TOM Without doubt. It’s not easy to keep going when you are out on your feet, it really is a severe test of your mettle. By the Thursday night, when we had caught about 18 fish altogether, I was receiving a lot of texts and phone calls, telling me we were well ahead and on course to win the event. I tried to shun all mention of that, pushing it to the back of my mind... I just didn’t want to jeopardise our chances by becoming

A
s always, the Team Competition will create huge interest as the 16 teams (48 pairs) will lock horns to compete for the honours ... prepare for some fun Carp Connections, the Team Title sponsor, are one of the major carp holiday specialists in Europe and have top notch lakes throughout its portfolio. With most of its French venues boasting 30kg fish, there are also guided trips with accommodation and tackle provided in Italy and Spain (Orellana, Sierra Brava and Ebro Caspe). In these venues there are certainly fish of much greater proportions than 30kg and, although it cannot be guaranteed, a new world record is always a possibility! CC’s manager, Hans Sissingh, has been with the WCC as a sponsor and ticket agent for Benelux and Germany since the start, here at Madine. His lake, the 100 acre record breaker, Lac de Villedon, is one of the best managed lakes in France holding an enormous stock of carp with more 30’s, 40’s and 50’s than any comparable sized lake in Europe. It is not uncommon to catch very big carp at Lac de Villedon, and most anglers who visit will catch at least one 20kg carp! It is for this very reason that Carp Connections will offer all competitors of this year’s WCC a catch guarantee for those who fish the lake for one week non-stop. No fish = free re-run ticket* This year, Carp Connections are providing each of the first three teams with a weeklong holiday. The whole team, consisting of six anglers, will win a trip to Fishing resorts Du Der, which is 100 acres in size, over 4 lakes. The venue boasts an incredible stock of fish, with 1,500 carp all over 20lbs+ which are pyramid stocked and there are several mirrors and one common over 50 lbs. The prize sponsor for the Gladiator games is JRC, SHAKESPEARE and BERKELY GULP
Gladiators ready! The Gladiator Games
As many regular competitors may now know, over the past two years WCC Team Title Sponsor, Carp Connections, have established an interesting and entertaining side attraction that takes place during the build up to the main event. To add some extra spice for the teams competing in the main event, The Gladiator Games was born. The nature of these games makes them an obvious attraction to any passer-by, with their mad-cap themes of wader competition, rope pulling and weight lifting, being integral to its success. As most of us know, the Sunday afternoon before the peg draw can sometimes be a bit boring - after
all, what is there to do after you’ve checked out all the pegs and made up your list? Well, the answer is, turn up at Carp Connections beach, Madine 2/3, just next to the sailing school and join us for the spectacle that is the Gladiator Games! The Gladiator Games are the brainchild of Carp Connections’ Hans Sissingh and are run in association with JRC, Shakespear and Berkley GULP, who are providing some very good prizes for competitors to win. Your host for the frivolities is none other than Hans himself, who is sure to make himself known to you with the aid of his trusty loud-hailer... You have been warned!
How to enter..
Let your hair down on Sunday afternoon with Hans Sissingh of carpconnections as the Gladiator Games get underway
Magazine sponsored by Pescalis
To enter the Gladiator Games is completely free of charge, however, it is only open to subscribed teams who have signed up at HQ... so sign up, bring your six team members along and be a good sport! ● JRC Connection range Tug-of-war contest: Something must give when 6v6 strong men meet. ● Berkley GULP, Weight lifting in photo position: Prove that you can handle a 30kg ‘fish’! ● Shakespeare thigh waders run: ‘Thighly’ entertaining to watch, and only for the toughest!

Here are a few things that you can expect to find on the website now, during, and after the event.
BLOG The website is regularly updated with blogs from participants and WCC team members. This year, we have had all the latest news from the event Head Marshal, Andy Chambers, as he prepared the swims at Madine... We went down under to join Andy Wallis to follow his progress as he prepared himself to take a trip half way round the world to join us for this year’s competition... We also had a blog from John Dearden, a WCC participant who hails from South Africa - at a time when they were hosting the World Cup. (Congratulations to Spain!) During the event, there will be up-to-the-minute updates of their blogs from Ross Honey at WCC HQ and Jake Langley Hobbs, wherever he might be on the venue.
MONTHLY PRIZE DRAW Every month you can enter the prize draw via your profile, initially for a chance to win some great angling prizes courtesy of our sponsors.
This year the World Carp Classic website has once again gone from strength to strength For each month you enter, you will also gain a ticket into the final, grand draw which will be held prior to the event next year, where you could win FREE entry into the World Carp Classic 2011! The fortunate grand draw winner for 2010 was Cristian Marinica from Austria, who was absolutely delighted to have won a precious place at this year’s event. Well done to Cristian and all the other prize winners for 2010! Will it be you who wins this fantastic prize next year? Well, you know what they say, “if you don’t buy a ticket, you can’t win the lottery” so please make sure that you enter every month to maximise your chances!
EVENT During the event the website will be updated regularly each day with news of the latest catches as they come in. We will also be posting pictures and videos - as and when we receive them – with TV highlights, and interviews with competitors as they strive to catch what could be their winning carp!

www.worldcarpclassic.com
A truly global event As the competition continues to expand year upon year, it draws in anglers from countries that have never entered previously and this, of course, creates further media attention. An example of that occurs yet again this year, as it did last year with the participation of the pair from Japan. This time around it’s the turn of Australia to make their debut in the event in the form of Ben Cook and Andy Wallis. They will be providing a video diary of their journey to the events. And there are sure to be plenty of interested parties “down under” following the pair’s progress.
Get the picture? At event HQ there will be a dedicated media and IT team whose task it will be to upload the photographs and videos to the website on a daily basis as and when new material arrives.
Caught on camera! A TV series is being produced, which will be internationally broadcast on various channels including PV-TV, one of the competition sponsors. As well as the TV series, there will be a DVD produced which will be available through the Official WCC website shop www.worldcarpclassic. com. One thing is for certain, if you are in the competition you are in the program.

Who can live nowadays without PC and Internet connections? Not many of us can, that's for sure, and certainly not us, as the organisers of a world event. We are very dependent on having an internet connection, and we rely upon the internet massively to reach our audience. We need to make available a live, constant and up to date status of the event, and provide information on an instant basis. This year we have stepped up the game once again by having a strong team of no less than six dedicated people to edit and upload pictures and videos. So, having a reliable local internet specialist is always a good thing, be it for a competition like ours or an angler, eager to share his catch with the rest of the world, and on site at Madine, thanks to Profil PC, we will have just that! From visio
s Editor of Carpworld I’m accustomed to commissioning articles. Think of a subject, think of a suitable author, commission it, sit back and await the finished product. So when the inimitable (and irrepressible) Ross Honey came on the phone and told me he would like an article for his annual World Carp Classic magazine I didn’t perceive a problem. I know the game: I can write ‘thank you’ letters of 1500 words before breakfast; but then I sat down in front of a blank screen and looked at the title I’d been handed, ‘From Vision to Reality’. Unhelpfully, because of the suggested title the vision that sprang to mind was of ‘From Here to Eternity’, with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr going as far as one dared on screen in those distant days of innocence while rolling in the surf on some far-away exotic, erotic beach. Ah, there was a starting point. John Lilley and I were once drawn on an exotic beach in the World Carp Classic (when the match was fished at the Orient), but as no carp rolled in on the surf, and the only eroticism was topless bathers, I didn’t quite think that was what Ross was after. I had to think it out again. What was Ross’s vision exactly when he decided to expand his global golf-competition empire to the world of carp fishing? I’ve never really had an answer to that question, or to the one I asked when I tried to find out where the idea came from in the first place. Ross must have asked someone what the next huge leisure pursuit was likely to be, and some very well-informed market analyst came up with carp fishing. He was right of course, but in the late 90s fact that the known big-fish venue I was under the impression that only Lac de Madine was to be fished from bait and tackle manufacturers and the areas of bank that weren’t normally publishers of books, magazines and DVDs open for fishing was a big attraction. I were aware of the rapidly expanding remember Rod Hutchinson being very carp marketplace. So to understand excited about the prospect of the match the vision you have to understand the because of the venue and coming in full background. Ross Honey is entrepreneur weight behind the venture with his high (with philanthropic traits) who runs a profile Dream Team. The inaugural event huge worldwide golfing competition was an individual one and the strongest embracing virtually every country in support was from the Brits. I’m tempted to the world, the finals for which are held suggest that it was from the English but as in Scotland each year, with heavy TV the Welsh did rather well in the first couple coverage thrown in. Could he repeat the of events I’ll stay general! The infrastrucsuccess in the world of carp fishing? swims to run away with it, and then the winner came through on the last night to take the title, the winner being Paul Rayment from Kent, who was also pegged on the mainland, on the point in front of Madine Two and Three. Paul has the unique claim to fame of being the only winner of the World Carp Classic individual title! Cathy Bell, now Cathy Hughes, caught a 30lb+ carp and would have walked away with the Ladies’ title, if there had been one on offer. The biggest carp of the competition was caught by the Welsh guys from the beach with the end of season bathing in full flow. The captor, Martin Cronin, was actually cursing his luck when the bobbin flew because he thought he was attached to a bather. The reality was even better than a bather, or Deborah Kerr; he had a big mirror on the end! For me there was a totally unexpected by-product of the first Madine match: I found I was excited and captured by the prospect of fishing big carp waters. Bearing in mind that at that time the biggest known carp water in England was Wraysbury at around 125 acres and you will understand that the 2,500-acre Madine was in a different league in terms of size, space, and

certainly mystery. I’d always thought that I would find big waters daunting. I didn’t: I found Madine exciting and since that first event in 1998 I have had no fear of big-water fishing. Yes, in matches you fish where you draw, but that is part of the excitement and mystery. I’ve since enjoyed sessions at Madine, Cassien, Raduta, and the Orient, and while I haven’t caught on every session I’ve had more than my share of good fortune and been enthralled by the air of freedom of having all that space, sky and water in front of me and all around me. One of the great attractions of carp fishing which drew me to the pursuit of carp in the first place was in not knowing: in the early days I fished waters that I wasn’t even sure held carp. Frustration is part of the game, and that frustration is heightened tenfold by the participation in big-water sessions, and especially big-water matches. It’s no good entering one and being fazed by not catching, or not succeeding. Trying to win a big match is a lifetime commitment, and while Steve Briggs and I have been fortunate enough to win two world championships (out of three) the World Carp Classic is proving a different proposition altogether. Every year is a frustrating ‘never again’

and the vision wasn’t really materialising. In fact at times it must have seemed more like a nightmare than a dream! The event moved to Lac d’Amance. The nicest thing I can say about Amance is that the infrastructure was almost as good as Madine, and the pre-event social scene was epic. In fact it was at Amance that I suffered a lost few hours. I think it was in 2003. We arrived early afternoon, and the bar was open. We had a drink. I was very tired from getting up early and travelling all that way so early evening I retired to the car for an hour’s nap (friends suggest it was to sober up, but I can’t recall that aspect). I woke refreshed and launched myself on the anticipated party scene with some enthusiasm. There wasn’t one. Everyone had gone to bed – because it was 1.00 a.m.! Well I say ‘everyone had gone to bed’ but that isn’t quite accurate because the mercurial Ray Dale-Smith accidentally finished up sleeping in a ditch he happened to stumble across in the very early hours. The other highlight from Amance was Simeon Bond and Martin Ford getting lost when they went to locate their peg. And I mean lost. (If you are getting the impression that these events are largely fished by grown-ups who never grew up then so be it. Collectively normally responsible people can act quite uncharacteristically, particularly when alcohol is thrown into the occasion.) Ross used to ring me fairly frequently during the Amance years. The event was losing momentum. Amance was too peggy, and there weren’t enough productive swims. It was Blanksville for most competitors. In addition to which in the run up to the event. Ross wasn’t entirely sure that he was That year Ross was badly let down holding the event at the right time of by the pegging and some other aspects year, which was why it was moved to of the organisation of the event and spring one year. stop very few people were any the wiser about where they were fishing, or where their swim was! I think Ross and his team now accept that the peg-by-peg draw is one of the highlights of a carp match and the reversion to a ‘proper’ draw at Madine – including the innovative ‘second chance’ aspect – over the last two years has added an enormous amount to the frisson of the event in the lead up to the match itself. The Orient was a great venue but the WCC 2006 event was not the organisers’ finest hour. Then Andy Chambers joined the team and suddenly the vision was back on track and nearer to becoming reality. Now I’m sorry if singling out Andy treads on anyone’s toes but the upturn in the quality of the running of the event coincided with his arrival, and the professionalism has continued onwards and upwards with the move back to the original venue, Lac de Madine. Andy is a big-water specialist, and an ex-bank manager, which means he is familiar with the needs of anglers, and has the ability to organise. He is just one member of a well-organised team but for a number of years the main gripe about the WCC was the pegging. We now know that the organisers will have pegged the event to the best of their ability, which makes a huge difference to the attitude of the

he second Orient event was a good one. Although only a handful of carp were caught they came from different parts of the lake and all the competitors felt they were in with a chance right up to the death. I was non-fishing captain of our team that year because I was suffering from an agonising (slightly painful to most of you) tooth abscess that sidelined me. The fact that two of our three pairs caught and we won the team title suggested that my being non-fishing captain wasn’t such a bad thing. George Csonka, my substitute, caught: need I say more? I think we came away from the Orient feeling that the event was definitely headed in the right direction. OK there were very few carp caught, but that’s big-water carping. The French call these events ‘enduros’, which I feel is a good name for them. They are an endurance test, not a bleak-bashing contest. ‘What is your biggest thrill to date?’ was one of the questions Ross included in his brief. Well winning the team title
at Orient in 2007 was a thrill and a real feather in our cap. To follow that up by winning the team event at Madine in 2008, and then again in 2009 has been exciting in the extreme. Not only that but team members Mark Bartlett and Kevin Hewitt came second in 2008, and Tom Duncan-Dunlop and Rob Tough capped this with their runaway win it in 2009! Each successive team triumph has seemed more unlikely than the last, which has made each year’s win a real source of pride to all the Carpworld team involved in the event, and their sponsors, Mainline Baits. But to me the fishing side of the match has always been just a part of the whole. The World Carp Classics are occasions, a gathering of the clans not just from Europe but from all over the World: family gatherings if you like, because I have always felt that carp anglers are family. We are not normal in the every day sense of the word, but collectively we are because we are all fuelled by the same energy, the love of carp. We are normal in each other’s eyes and the World Carp Classic meetings are a celebration of that normality. My partner Lee Jackson and I both caught our only WCC carp on the
first night of the first event in 1998, but we keep coming back for more, and looking forward to it, too! Normal? I rest my case... Anyone looking in from the outside and thinking of these occasions as mere matches is missing the point. The return to Lac de Madine has meant that the WCC has come of age. There have been a number of major changes since the event was last fished at Madine in 2000. The organisation has got better, far more bank space is now being pegged, boats are now being used there, and the water is shut to other water-using pursuits for the duration of the event. The fact that there are now qualifying events in a number of countries speaks for itself and emphasises how much the support for the event has expanded over the last three years. If Ross’s original dream was to create an event which is the equivalent of his global golf pairs’ competition then he must be fast approaching achieving that as a reality. It is by far the biggest annual event on the carp fishing calendar, and long may it continue. One man has been responsible for making that happen: well done Ross Honey, the man with a twentieth century vision which has become a twenty-first century reality.

STEVE Hi Val, can you please tell us a bit about yourself and your business partner, and how you came together to create your business? VAL We met each other over a year ago and, after graduation from business school, we spent some time working together. It was then that we discovered that we both shared the same desire to create our own business, and we also shared an interest in nature and the great outdoors. While we were fishing we discussed fishing tackle, and he was amazed by the huge amount of tackle we carp anglers use. The conversation soon got around to my rods, which were custom built to my specification in England. I told him how difficult that had proven to be, and how the experience was fraught with difficulty and a nightmare trying to get what

I wanted. Although I got what I wanted, I realised that for anyone who does not speak English it would have been almost impossible to have custom rods built. It was bad enough for me, and my English is pretty good! We talked about this factor and decided that it was worth following up our discussions with research to assess the viability of a European-based business producing custom built tackle. Knowing the sort of profit one can make with rods made in the Far East, it drove us mad. That’s why all of our products will be 100% made in England, with superior quality and expensive components. We believe it’s time to go back to quality tackle. We decided to push ahead with the forming of the company, and we obviously needed a name for it. We came up with the name ‘banana rods’, however it wasn’t until much later - after many more names had been suggested - that we both agreed that the name Banana Rods was catchy and certainly one that will be easily remembered. STEVE Okay, can you perhaps tell us what the captor of the biggest fish in the 2010 WCC can expect to receive as the prize? VAL Basically, we want the winner to enjoy the benefits of owning custom built rods, designed to their exact requirements and specification. We believe that every angler who goes into to a
 Magazine sponsored by Pescalis www.pescalis.com
shop to buy an ‘off of the shelf’ rod, has to compromise in one way or another. If not in quality, then in some design feature that is either not what is ideally wanted or is simply not right for the angler in question... We have all done this, and we end confused because no rod has all the specifications and features that we want. This often means that we make a bad choice, putting looks over functionality, and we can end up with rods that may look pretty but we cannot cast with. It happens, and it happens a lot more than you might think! It’s also good to bear in mind that custom built rods can often be less expensive than those bought off the shelf or, for just a little more money a better, or more specific to your needs option is available. We want the winner of our rods to have something very special to remember the occasion by, and indeed we hope that every competitor will take away a special memory from the event, be it our rods or simply the memory of a great time spent with friends. To take part in the World Carp Classic - the best carp angling event in the world bar none - is very special and to catch the biggest fish will make it even more special. We at Banana Rods are extremely excited to be the biggest fish sponsor, and we will be very proud to go up on stage to present the captor with our rods.

I have always been fascinated by nature and fishing, it has been a growing passion of mine since I started fishing for carp 15 years ago. The pleasure of being by the waters edge, lost in the wilderness with my friends, is a way for me to
recharge my batteries. Carp fishing gives me so much pleasure and magical moments that whenever I get the chance, I find myself back on the bankside. The site at Pescalis is a perfect place for our passion, a modern fishery designed to meet all the needs of the angler. Pescalis combines the preservation of the environment with the needs of a sport fishing venue. The practice of fishing is enriched by the installation of many nice features around the site (granite blocks, boulders, trees and hedges, and aquatic plants) which allow the practice of fishing in all its diversity, with the pleasure of catchng some very pretty fish.

These most pleasant moments are at their peak when shared with friends, and Pescalis provides the perfect place to enjoy an unforgettable session in a beautiful setting, with a warm welcome and a stock of fish to break all records!

Navicom Communication
A good communication system is vital to ensure the success and smooth running of the event. Since our association in 2006, Navicom has offered a second-to-none system which has proven reliable even in the most challenging situations. We have been praised by Emergency teams many times for the quality of our equipment, which comprises of about 50 radio stations with PC radio boosters and relays to ensure full coordination throughout the 114 hours. You can see it in action at Madine, and you can also buy our favourite model, the RT 320, to see for yourself.
This is extremely good news for the captor of the first fish in the competition, as catching that fish will be rewarded with Indyline product and a trophy!
P&O Ferries
The WCC’s association with P&O Ferries as preferred travel partners continues to provide the option of extremely competitive, special rates on all crossings. The offer is available to all competitors, and anyone who is able to take advantage of these rates will benefit greatly.

Reuben Heaton Scales & Signage
Since its inception, Reuben Heaton has been the Official Scales and signage sponsor for the World Carp Classic. Scales - The World Carp Classic Champions of each year are awarded a much coveted and unique set of “Golden” scales. It is not by chance that Reuben Heaton have remained at the very top of the pile, producing scales that are the choice of champions. Signage – It may be easy to perhaps overlook the importance of the signage used at an event such as the WCC, but its value to the competition certainly doesn’t escape our appreciation. The provision of quality signage, giving a much more professional appearance, is something that we feel is priceless.

Banana Rods was born in early 2010 as a result of a passion for angling. The business was formed by two friends who share a passion for quality tackle and whom shared the will of starting a cool business. It was natural for us to buy our rods in England, where quality craftsmen make some exceptional carp rods, and it was as a result of this that the idea grew and we decided to form Banana Rods, a company that would offer exceptional craftsmanship, meaning 100% handmade rods, using only the best components available in the industry.

Introducing new changes to the competition is very easy... It’s planning them thoroughly that takes the time and effort. For the WCC Final, a limited number of Open entries per country will be made available to competitors who have participated previously, with anglers who have participated most, being given priority. Open entry places
will be made available immediately after the 2011 competition by payment of a ÂŁ200 deposit. If anglers are unsuccessful in getting a place they will be given a full refund and offered a guaranteed place in their appropriate National Qualifying Event. The criteria to participate in a National Qualifying Event, is, that you have to be a resident in that country. Entry by anglers into a national qualifier will be refused if they do not meet the criteria. For 2010, all
countries were allocated a minimum of three places, and this will again be the case for 2011. If for any reason these places are not taken up either by a Qualifying event or Open entry within eight weeks of being made available, they will be reallocated to the country with the highest demand. The place will go to the anglers at the top of the waiting list. The number of places allocated per country has been based on historical participation to date. We feel extremely proud of what has been achieved in setting this event up, and we are able to confidently predict that its success is assured. I am looking forward to whatever the next challenge may be, and we will keep moving forward, rising to each one as it presents itself.
2011 and beyond . . .
e are certain that most of you will be aware of the World Carp Classic Qualifying events that have taken place for the very first time during the course of 2010. The Qualifying events were introduced out of necessity to maintain a balanced national representation, and as a means to further encourage new participating countries into the competition. Also, as the Qualifying events are open to all residents of a country, it maintains the ethic that the WCC is inclusive, not exclusive. In 2011 there will be even more Qualifying events held, with events in Romania, Denmark, South Africa, Hungary and possibly Japan amongst others. These events will further augment the current list of countries running Qualifiers. As momentum continues to build it is impossible to predict anything, so you would be well advised to check the WCC website regularly for any new additions to Qualifying events taking place in your country. All dates and locations will be announced as and when we receive confirmation with the information being made available on the WCC website.
