WELCOME

Hello All,

It has been an exciting 12 months for Kirala Angus with some new additions and strategic changes made to our business however, our aim remains the same; to provide sound, functional, commercially viable and carcass driven bulls to our prospective clients each and every year. We have had great success throughout the spring and summer showing seasons with our cattle at both local and royal show levels. Most notably was Kirala 7068 Geddes S36 who won Supreme exhibit at Dungog show in November, Reserve Snr Champion Bull at Canberra Royal, and 2nd in class at Sydney Royal in the 24-30 month class. We are incredibly proud of how our cattle have performed this year, and showing has enabled us to showcase the type and standard of cattle we are trying to produce with our program.

Our first and foremost important addition to our program in September was the addition of our new Chief gate-opener, cow brusher, genetics specialist and Dad’s new biggest critic, Mackenzie Emery born in September 2023. As with our cattle, we like to keep a low profile until we are ready to show the world so ‘Mack’ probably flew under the radar for a while, but with recent attendance at several shows including Canberra and Sydney Royal she has definitely found her home with her new show family.

Secondly, was the addition of new herd sire in Texas Pacific T52. Texas Pacific T52 typifies what we continue to strive for in our program; performance, power and presence. T52 is a Sterling Pacific 904 son, out of the $150,000 record price mature cow, Texas Pride L600, that was sold late in 2022. We are super excited to be able to add a bull to our program that has so much strength on both sides of his pedigree, coupled with data and phenotype. T52 is in the Top 5% for 200, 400 and 600 Day growth traits, top 5% for Carcass Weight, Top 10% for EMA and Top 1% for Docility.

T52 was collected in August and sent straight to work. Semen in T52 is available upon request.

Our team of donors have also been busy on centre producing the next crop of potential calves to enter our programs. Sires include Varilek Geddes 7068, LD Capitalist 316, Spicklers Powerpoint, Baldridge Compass C041, Sterling Pacific 904, Knowla So Right S48 and Sprys Paratrooper R601, SAV America 8018 and the new boys on the block; Millars Duke 816 and Musgrave Rob Roy. All sires that complement the individual females with same breeding focus in mind; to produce functional, commercially relevant cattle into the industry.

Whilst it has been an exciting 12 months, it has also been challenging with both the season, and the cattle market impacting on everyone nationwide. With supplementary feed costs through the roof last year, we have been fortunate enough to snag a good start to autumn with Oats and Rye pasture mixes charging along in readiness for the bulls and young heifers. We received outstanding support for our first onfarm open day in June’23 and have excellent support from breeders in our program. This year’s bull line up will be no different in the type and consistency that we are aiming to produce.

ANIMAL INFORMATION

Animal Nutrition

Whole-of-life nutrition in bulls is a topic which is often spoken about loosely in the industry and often without proper education. At Kirala, we strive to ensure our bulls are presented in excellent and ready-towork condition. In order to do so, we utilise a number of techniques to ensure these bulls get up to weight quickly and remain so once a purchaser has taken on a bull. All calves are supplied adequate mineral supplementation, and opportunity to fully develop their rumen on a good pasture prior to weaning. We also aim to utilise a controlled creep-feeding systems to allow early starch ingestion and accelerate animal rumen and papillae development. All animals are yard-weaned and handled, and returned into paddocks with access to good quality cereal hay, and with a controlled intake of pellet for a period postweaning. All pellets are supplied by Riverina Australia or Conqueror Milling and are fed in a controlled Kg/head/day basis to prevent any adverse digestive risk.

Nutrient requirements are monitored and ensured to prevent any developmental ‘checks’ during the growth of our bulls. This process gives our clients and potential purchasers the re-assurance that our bulls are produced in a stable, controlled and effective manner enabling phenotypical variations in bulls to come forward and condition is maintained once sold.

Parent Verification and Genomic Testing

At Kirala, all bulls sell with full Parent Verification (PV) and Genomic testing conducted. In doing such, we can, with increased accuracy, supply a bull that will meet your EBV requirements. Genomic testing analyses over 50,000 SNP genomes to return an EBV profile for your bull with a much higher accuracy than would typically be seen if this hadn’t had been completed. All of the females we retain at Kirala are also tested to ensure we are retaining the right females, and increasing the overall accuracy of our cow-herd data.

Vaccination and Health History

All Kirala bulls have gone through a rigorous vaccination and worm control program. These include;

• Dual active Gastro-intestinal Worm Drench - Cydectin Platinum

• Bovine Ephemeral fever (3 day) – 2 doses

• Piligard (Pink Eye) – 2 doses

• Ultravac 7 in 1 – 2 doses

• Vibrovax – 2 doses

• Multimin – As required

Bull Handling

At Kirala, the temperament of our cattle and the bulls we produce is paramount to us and we sell all our animals with the confidence that this will continue. Temperament is important not only for the safety and welfare of the handlers, but impacts greatly on other factors such as fertility, conception rates, growth rates and carcass quality. Simply put, a fast bull can impact more than how much dust he kicks up in the yard. All our animals are handled on foot, horseback and with a buggy/motorbike to ensure the bulls are ready for any operation. In our programs we exhibit a zero-tolerance policy for animals that are identified as having a temperament issue, and any issues are removed from the program or sale line-up.

Bull Guarantee

All breeding animals are sold with the full confidence that, to the best of our knowledge, the animal is sound and fit-for-purpose. All bulls are sold with a completed crush-side semen test and morphology test. In knowing this, accidents can happen, as such we offer all bulls with a 6-month guarantee on any animal that becomes infertile or breaksdown due to reasons other than injury or misadventure. In this event, Kirala will offer one of the following options.

1. Provide a satisfactory replacement at no further cost, if there is suitable option available, or

2. Issue a credit of the amount of purchase value less salvage value for use on a replacement Kirala Bull. Please note: Salvage of the animal is the responsibility of the purchaser.

We recommend and use Crouch Rural Transport for all our bull deliveries, cattle movements and show team requirements. All bulls will be delivered with a 100km radius of Gresford NSW free of charge.

Comments: ASHL65 has made her place in our program as our most prolific donor after her purchase from the Premier Angus dispersal sale in 2020. L65 caught our eye as high volume, moderate frame cow exhibiting huge amounts of femininity without compromising on performance. L65 hails from the Y301 Dream cow line who needs no introduction in the stud industry being one of, if not the most influential Australian bred cows of recent times. June 2023 TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation

Comments: ASHL70 was the $18,000 highlight purchase from the Premier Angus 2020 dispersal sale. L70 exhibits a phenotype that we found hard to fault and was catalogued as being one of the best phenotype cows in the Premier herd. L70 is tremendously long, square hipped, beautiful front-end and oozes volume, performance and muscle. L70 comes from a similar Dream cow family line to L65, going back several generations to the great Banquet Kiwi Dream+92 cow. Being slightly larger in frame than L65, L70 gives plenty of mating options to produce the right progeny. L70’s first bull calf at Kirala, AIE21S33, is a Varilek Geddes 7068 bull calf that highlights our bull battery for 2023 and has been used in herd over heifers in 2022, and across our autumn herd in 2023. An early maturing, moderate framed bull that is hard to fault for the volume of muscle and carcass he brings to the table.

Comments: Gretel N26 was purchased from the Stage 2 Wattletop dispersal in 2018 for $7,000 as a 10 month old heifer. N26 caught our eye immediately and was, in many eyes, the pick of the baby heifers. Comments: Direction J134 is a cow we are exceptionally proud of. J134 would be best described as a cow that has done nothing but breed good cattle for us. Plain in type, square made, good volume but not extreme in any characteristic, J134 has really worked for us and has bred some really top cattle. J134’s mother Direction C104 was one of our foundation cows and her progeny are spread throughout our herd. J134’s V A R Legend 5019 Q8 bull calf of 2019 remains up there as one of the best bulls we have bred. Q8 was sold privately for $15,000 to Torryburn stud and remains to be breeding well.
