Studio Diary: Elizabeth Barnett I am a printmaker, painter, illustrator and collector of lovely things. I make etchings, collages, watercolours and paintings. My studio operating hours are 9-5 (sometimes 10-6!).
OSLO DAVIS: MELBHATTAN
I can’t start the day without walking my dog. Today’s agenda involves coffee with a friend and finishing some watercolours. Studio tunes on high rotation are Nick Huggins, Beach House and Feist. On my desk you’ll find lots of paints, paper, brushes, pencils, empty tea cups, and a vase of hand picked flowers.
Sister Scouts Securing a residential location for an event like The Design Files Open House is no mean feat, which is why we enlisted a couple of experts! Sisters Ann and Kathy Grzan are the force behind Grzan Squared, a Melbourne-based photographic production and location company.
Studio snacks include fruit toast or omelettes made from the eggs of our studio chooks. My 3pm pick up is a cup of tea, a sit in the garden or a nap!
Everyone knows Melbourne-based illustrator and cartoonist Oslo Davis, you may have even unknowingly been the subject of one of his famous Overheard drawings for The Age. This summer, Oslo is making the transition from paper to screen, with the launch of his first animated film, Melbhattan. Inspired by Woody Allen’s classic Manhattan, Oslo has created and animated 61 illustrations that mimic iconic scenes from Allen’s film, with a Melbourne twist. Melbhattan will premiere at Rooftop Cinema on December 1, where Oslo hopes it will be viewed as “part-homage to, and part-pastiche of Melbourne.”
THINGS I LOVE To celebrate the launch of Megan Morton’s new book Things I Love, we asked TDF’s favourite stylist for her top picks at this year’s Open House.

We were surprised to learn that no midnight stalking or door knocking efforts are adopted in the quest to find the perfect space! Instead Ann and Kathy put their success down to being cultural sponges, and absorbing everything around them. “Our locations come from everywhere – architecture books and home and lifestyle mags, blogs, real estate listings, word of mouth, referrals from current homeowners. We’ve definitely become braver over the years, driving down dirt tracks in the hope of discovering an uncovered gem!” So what’s Ann and Kathy’s secret to a successful sibling working relationship? “The secret is in knowing each other so well. We trust each other, utilise each other’s strengths, work hard, cherish our luck and always remember to have fun! grzansquared.com
Now imagine when a sticky noir coffee is poured into Dawn Vachon’s unspeakably beautiful blue and rose tinted stoneware teacups. Wider than usual, shorter than some, more beautiful than most.

‘Patchwork 1’ by Rachel Castle Her paintings aren’t really paintings. They are a lifestyle. They promote happiness and sunshine. They turn a grey sky blue and they fill a room with comfort, joy and colour.
LOCAL BUBBLES From Australia’s mineral spring capital, business partners Brylie Rankine and Mitch Watson have made good on their promise to supply sparkling water from the other side of Melbourne, not the other side of the world. Daylesford and Hepburn Mineral Springs Co. is a range of bottled sparkling water, produced and packaged in our very own backyard – right down to the bottle cap. Let’s drink to that.

Bonnie and Neil: From Brunswick to Broadway We know we shouldn’t have favourites, but it’s a bit hard not to love Bonnie Ashley and Neil Downie, the cheerful couple behind Brunswick-based design studio Bonnie and Neil. We can’t get enough of Bonnie and Neil’s stunning range of hand printed textiles, soft furnishings and tablelinen, and it seems we are not alone. This year the couple packed their bags and took the Bonnie and Neil roadshow to the US for the New York International Gift Fair, where their range was picked up by none other than US retail juggernaut Anthropologie. From early next year their products will be stocked in Anthropologie’s American and UK stores. A well deserved endorsement for this very hardworking team.
Join Megan Morton for a special bedside book signing in the Open House master bedroom on Sunday December 2nd at 11am. Trophy Wife Nail Art will also be on hand offering customers sweet handpainted nail decals.

Rachel Castle and I were together when we first met the magical unicorn that is Jen Booth. Some mornings I wake up and work out which locket I am going to wear before choosing my clothes! Jen doesn’t make pocket lockets, she makes outfit-triggers! I am fond of the yellow pouch with white flag.

Each coming from respective creative backgrounds in fashion direction and advertising, the pair launched their own business six years ago, and have since gained a solid reputation for unearthing Melbourne’s most interesting homes and creative spaces.
I’m looking forward to summer, sitting on a beach and enjoying some quiet time.

In our preparations for this year’s Open House, we’ve been spending a lot of time on the ‘Southside’! In the process we’ve made a few new finds, and have re-discovered some of our favourite retail hotspots in Windsor, Prahran and South Yarra. After you’ve visited Open House, make sure you explore the neighbourhood!
No one does vintage and industrial quite like the folk at Tarlo and Graham, who have perfected the art of sourcing incredible long lost pieces, and then merchandising these finds with serious panache. Hanging above the shop floor you’ll find suspended vintage aeroplanes, skeletons and pendant lighting – the fossicking opportunities are limitless. Famed for his amazing in store merchandising displays, co-owner Phillip Graham once told us his secret – volume and repetition.

Fenton & Fenton
Owner Lucy Fenton brings her distinct brand of interior eye candy to life in her store Fenton & Fenton, which over the years has become a one-stop shop for those looking to give their home a unique ‘zhoosh’. This store is stocked to the brim with exotic and rare homewares, lighting and textiles from India, Morocco and Europe.
The coveted Loom rug keeps making a recurring cameo in our TDF home tours, and for good reason. If you thought these rugs were every bit magical from behind your computer screen, just wait until you see them in real life. Despite being a relatively modest little shopfront in East Prahran, Loom has a very loyal following and it’s no wonder why – these rugs perfectly combine contemporary style with traditional craftsmanship.

St Edmonds’ red brick bird mural exterior is as inviting as it is Instagram worthy. Housed in a converted garage, St Edmonds’ fit out is as impressive as its menu, with no design detail forgotten. We love the custom blackboards, hanging plants and the staff uniforms – custom made denim aprons by Scanlan & Theodore, of course.

Spoonful is the perfect brunch spot, famed for its savoury tarts and inventive salads. Owned by culinary whizz Melly Bielby (yes, of Hut 13), Spoonful is a southside institution frequented by a loyal community of ladies who lunch. Who doesn’t love a good magazine? Where Magnation is concerned this is not a rhetorical question, but a way of life! THE
RECIPE
MINI countryman FUV.
‘I think the best thing about pavlova, and what makes it inherently Australian, is that it looks like a mistake that someone has tried to cover with some cream and a pile of seasonal fruit.’
MANGO AND BERRY PAVLOVA By SoPhie Cookes
The iconic Aussie ‘Pav’. As a chef who cannot bake, I am particularly drawn to these types of desserts, as even when they are bad they are perfection – as long as the outside is a little flaky and crisp, and the inside is like moist marshmallow, there is no need to worry. If you split it or someone takes a greedy pinch from the side it’s okay, just fill with cream and a few strategically placed berries. I’m not personally a fan of uber sweet desserts, so I add no sugar to the cream, and sparingly sprinkle the strawberries with freshly ground pepper. Keep in mind that you can’t just start throwing pepper willy-nilly on every fruit dessert, however, in this case the balance of sweet and sour strawberries with the smoky, hot black pepper is a wonderful surprise. Ingredients 8 egg whites 500g sugar 4 tsp cornflour 1 vanilla bean (all pods scraped out) 1 ½ cups thickened cream (add a little of the vanilla) 1 tsp white wine vinegar 1 punnet of strawberries 1 mango 1 tsp freshly cracked black pepper 1 pinch sea salt Method Preheat your fan forced oven at 180 degrees. In a clean dry bowl add the egg whites and a generous pinch of sea salt. The sharp flakes cut through the whites and make it fluffier. Mix for 5 minutes. Add the sugar fairly slowly, by half cups. Continue whipping until the sugar has dissolved – test it by pressing a little of the mixture between your fingers to see whether the sugar is still undissolved. Add the vanilla and mix again. Remove the whisk and with a metal spoon, turn through the vinegar and cornflour. Place in a 30cm cake tin, lined with baking paper, fill to about 1cm below the rim. Place in the oven and immediately turn the oven down to 150 degrees. Bake for 30 minutes. Reduce heat further, to 120 degrees, and bake for a further 45 minutes. Remember to never open the door, as the hot air will be released and it won’t be as good. Once the 45 minutes are up, turn the oven off and leave it in the oven for 1.5 hours. While your pavlova is cooling down, prep the strawberries by slicing them however you like.
MUCH MORE FUN THAN AN SUV.
be mini.
If you’re the type of person who thinks the “great outdoors” is dining al fresco, you need an FUV. What’s an FUV? Much more fun than an SUV for one thing. For another, it’s a Fun Utility Vehicle. But the best thing of all is that it’s a MINI. A family-sized MINI with four doors, four adult sized seats and true MINI style go-kart handling, with enough room for a modern family full of modern family-sized fun. Test-drive Australia’s only FUV at a MINI Garage today or visit MINIfuv.com.au
To assemble – the world is your oyster! Our way is to slice the mango into thin slices and set aside, we like small discs for the strawberries. Un-tin the pavlova (we turn ours out upside down) and spread with the vanilla cream – if you use thickened cream, you don’t have to whip it and you get a much more luxurious result! Next, lay the strawberries in the middle and the mango around the outside. Sprinkle the pepper over the strawberries, serve and plate up. I assure you all bowls will be left clean! www.cookesfood.com.au
