TH house is located on a narrow land in a very dense area of the capital city of Hanoi. The plot of the house with a size of 4x6m has only a front facade facing a narrow 1.2 m wide aisle. The local district is characterized by an informal arrangement of narrow houses on small plots connected by narrow streets. The current Hanoi is a dynamic city with 8 million inhabitants, where cultural traditionalism intermingle with huge population density, lack of public space and also the gradual loss of cultural identity due to accelerated economic growth. With such complex entry conditions, the architects were challenged to design a contemporary house reflecting the local cultural identity and the needs of Hanoi family.

IDEA
With the current difficult conditions of the site, the house has only one narrow front facade, which is very close to the opposite neighboring house. The distance of these facades is only one meter in the upper floors. This north facing facade is made entirely of glass, so that the transmission of natural light into the house is maximized, creating an impression of a more breathable, larger space. The difference in ceiling heights also helps to enlarge the house, as well as increasing the spatial diversity of the small areas. The solution of a vertical arrangement of the house allows for the access of fresh air and natural ventilation, which is key in the humid and warm climate. The kitchen and dining room are located on the ground floor. This space is designed to provide the maximum level of daylight coming through the skylight on the roof, and from the gap between the offset volume of the upper floors and the main perimeter. The front part of the kitchen is also the main entrance into the house from a public alley, which is also the local custom. By fully opening the sliding entrance door to the alley, a more suitable connection between the surrounding neighbors and the family is created. The living room - where all the family activities are concentrated - is arranged in the middle part of the house on the third floor. This main living area is located between the master bedroom on the second floor and the kids’ room on the fourth floor. The highest fifth floor is designed as a praying room for the family’s altar and a laundry area with an access to the outdoor terrace and a view of the surrounding intensive development.

The house is designed to promote the positive values of traditional houses. The behavior and interaction between the traditional houses and natural elements have been built and cultivated over time to adapt to the geological characteristics and climate of North Vietnam. It is shown by ways of getting light and natural ventilation through the skylights, helping the living environment inside the house to be comfortable.
In a traditional Vietnamese family, the relationship between members is often very strong. This relationship is created thanks to the common living spaces that are often located in the center of the house - becoming one of the elements that unites the members. In addition, the open spaces and skylights are interwoven to help create points of view and visual connections throughout the house.
Moreover, native trees are planted between the spaces to help cool and provide areas of rest and relaxation for everyone in the house. The house should resemble a green oasis with trees, natural light and ventilation, creating breathing rooms for the family inside, as well as the densely populated neighborhood. With the open spaces, sitting at home now helps to re-establish neighbor relationships in the community, which is gradually lost in today’s process of urbanization.
The TH house was conceived as a concept to partially solve the problems that plague urban Hanoi. With this design, we hope to offer a suggestion of a fresh perspective on how one can better improve their living space in such conditions. This award, should this project receive it, will serve as an immense help in validating it as a solution to the overwhelming density of Hanoi’s urban development, boosting its popularity and spreading it among peers and common people alike, so as to secure a better future for the city.

GREENERY
The city of Hanoi is facing a significant lack of greenery in public space. Greenery within the local subtropical climate serves as a functional element that can provide street shading and reduce the temperature in the city. It is also important to focus on the microclimate of the housing itself within the dense development. Greenery within the interiors and outdoor overhanging gardens improve the quality of life in the buildings. The arrangement and type of plants are chosen according to lighting conditions and spatial possibilities. Large planting pots are connected to automatic irrigation, which helps for the maintenance.
In addition to the improvement of the microclimate inside the house, the greenery also provides a mental and physical rest from the hectic life in the big city. The intention is the connection between man and a piece of nature within a compact living in a densely built-up area. The architects strive to find answers to the significant problems of the contemporary dynamic fast development of the city with a high density of population and development.

DETAILS
The house is designed with a structure of open spaces interwoven between private spaces, simultaneously combining with 3-layer open facade system: glass, bamboo curtain, tree, to constantly fill the house with natural light and augment interpersonal connections. This is in sharp contrast to the current tube houses, with the floors being used to maximize the usable area, allowing no space for ventilation, natural light and human connection.

The Traditional Clinic SPD is located in a new mixed utility residential highrise complex in Hanoi. The project is devided into two primary functions. Along with the specialized clinical space on the 7th floor of the building, there is the reception area serving as the information hub, spreading knowledge of traditional medicine to the masses - located in the bulding’s main hall.

INSPIRATION
Traditional medicine is a discipline in Vietnamese medicine, by which, ailments are traditionally treated. The unique aspect of this practice is the use of natural materials and ingredients in its medicine. Each dose is a mixture of different herbs, made with formulae passed down through many generations and cultures, with strict varification of safety and effectiveness in treatment. The Traditional Clinic SPD project aims to preserve and augment the positive values of traditional medicine, all while modern medicine is most popular, helping people to better understand and take care of their own well-being.

The reception area is located in the main hall of the building, adjacent to one of the busiest traffic routes of the residential area. The design is oriented around the utilisation of natural and traditional materials, such as ceramic tilings, natural rock and wood..., combined to bring about a welcoming feeling and a sense of warmth. A space soaked in tradition, intertwine with the contemporary, modern environment, helps to remedy the industrial setting and create an inviting atmosphere, calling on people to experience and discover.
The focal point of this space is the curved wall made of a mixture of wood and rock, built using traditional, artisanal methods. The elegant curve not only devide each function, but also highlight the image of the traditional pharmacist, carefully and precisely concocting each dose of medicine in front of the wall of cabinets, containing over 110 different herbs, invoking the sense uniqueness of traditional medicine in the space.
By its side are the instructions given by specitialists at the counter, helping patients to better understand, to be more reassured and trusting in the methods of traditional medicine.

According to the belief of those who practice this discipline, to effectively cure an ailment, a patient must be treated both physically and mentally.
Because of that, the specialized clinical space’s design seeks inspiration from the tranquility of traditional Vietnamese architecture. The spacial rhythm of this space is formed by 31 rock columns, spanning the main hallway. Beside that, each specialized clinic is separated by greenery, creating in them the necessary privacy and freshness, further adding to the spacial rhythm. Each of the hallway’s end opens up to natural elements, granting patients access to more greenery and natural light... bringing about comfort, relaxation and helping them to reconnect with nature, before their treatments commence.
Different from the reception area, the clinical space is made with the combination of natural and man-made materials. Glass is used to maximize the project’s ablity to receive natural light. This, combine with the vertical architectural elements, gives the space a sense of height and airiness.

The aim of this vision is to make a new forest area in the central part of Hanoi, on the Banana island which is located in Red river between two bridges Long Bien and Chuong Duong. Due to rapid deverloping, intensive traffic and having lack of public green spaces, the city has faced many problemswith environment. Improving living environment of people, city space quality and increasing biodiversity in already densely populated Red river, such forest area - Green Lungs may bring many benefits for all.

PROJECT SUMMARY
Today, the strong development of science and technology has made people increasingly separate from nature. The current young generation is only interested in social networks and the benefits that social networks bring. Along with that, Hanoi city - the capital of Vietnam - in the period of strong economic development and rapid urbanization. The green spaces for the city are increasingly in short supply and insufficient to accommodate the exponentially growing population. Therefore, human connection with nature is becoming looser. Quality of life is gradually deteriorating due to problems of air, health, ... In addition, the disappearance of the natural habitats with high biodiversity is a very big omission. People only care about what brings economic value to themselves, but ignore the importance of nature and ecological stability.

“Propagated Sanctuary in Vietnam” is a project to restore and plant alluvial subtropical forests on the island between the Red River close to the city center. The project will contribute to the restoration of native plants in the North of Vietnam, while at the same time creating a green space for the city to regain the lost balance due to urbanization here. In addition, this forestry project is also an ideal public space for city people because of the benefits that the forest will bring.

Biodiversity
Vietnam’s high human population density has taken a heavy toll on its natural habitats. The coastal and alluvial forests in particular have been hardest hit because the human population densities are highest in these lowland habitats. Hanoi which has been home to several species of birds has seen their numbers reduce drastically over the last decade from about 214 species to a mere 25. The forest aims to resuscitate these numbers and provide safe haven to the birds.
One emerging area of focus in greening cities is urban biodiversity conservation. There is growing consensus that, contrary to earlier misconceptions, cities can play active role in biodiversity conservation. The forest aims on becoming a part of the city as it integrates activities for the people and will be an ideal instrument for promoting conservation education.
Migrant Hotspot
The Red River is a major migratory flyway which passes through the heart of this noisy, polluted, crowded city. There isn’t much space for birds here – urban development is rife, and most of the land that hasn’t yet been built upon has been given over to high-intensity agricultural fields and banana plantations, neither of which are very good for birds.
The Red River Island is not just attractive habitat for birds but also for the activities of bird poachers there. Bird traps and mist nets are commonly encountered, especially near the ponds along the western edge. In general, poaching and trading of birds is a big issue in Vietnam and South East Asia.

The design space is the highest 3 floors in a commercial building located in the center of Hanoi. The floors with main functions include: apartments, restaurants, exhibition spaces. With the goal of bringing a sense of peace and tranquility to users through natural and traditional elements in the noisy and bustling context in the heart of the city.

Trees, water surface, light, ventilation are all basic factors that help improve people’s living environment both physically and mentally. They are also constantly changing factors that create changes in space over time.
The use of these elements at the same time creates a rhythm, guiding the user through the functional spaces, increasing the experience and interestingness of the space.
The atmosphere of the space is brought through through the use of raw, natural materials. They help space users not only see, but also invite perception with all 5 senses. The user can see, touch, hear, taste, smell the properties that only those materials bring.

NATURE ELEMENT SPACE EXPLORATION LOCAL MATERIAL
Each floor has a fairly large usable area, stretches horizontally and is limited in height. This creates an imbalance for the functional spaces inside. Since then, the division and direction of functional spaces in each floor is an important factor to be able to create comfort for users.

PROGRAM
The 11th floor space with functional space is two apartments. The spaces are flexibly divided through fixed walls and columns, helping the spaces still ensure the necessary privacy. At the same time, the column systems help the buffer spaces be connected to each other to create ventilation for the house.
The 12th floor space with the main function is the restaurant. Diversity and experiential factors are pushed up through the use of flexible wall systems (water, glass) to help create a sensory transition for customers, but still be able to take advantage of the natural light coming in. the entire usable space inside. In addition, natural materials are always suggested to touch the user’s emotions through all senses.
The 13th floor space with the main function is a static space block. The main use function is a meditation space, and flexibly exhibiting when needed. The design is towards flexibility, while creating different private and public areas to ensure functional areas while in use.
