Every week for the past year(ish), I’ve invited some of my favorite writers to give tips, from getting better at email and managing your time better, to why tipsy grocery store trips are great and how we can be less flaky.Below are the eight tips that completely blew my mind this year. Instead of responding one at a time to the forever trickle of your inbox, email batching — responding to as many as possible during a specific time frame — is incredibly satisfying.


One of my resolutions this year was to spend less of my life in Gmail. Solution? Now I answer emails twice a day, first around noon and then again at 6 p.m. Knowing I have to get through dozens of important messages makes my replies quicker and crisper; I can also delete the ultimate enemy (junk mail) all at once. Plus, there’s a sense of accomplishment in setting discrete boundaries on an infinite task. Batching emails is like finding the end of pi. Of course, this idea doesn’t hold water if your job demands immediate responses, but it’s still possible to jump on messages that are urgent, and to corral less important messages for later in the day.
