A kaffemik is a traditional social gathering where people celebrate a family event and come together to catch up on news and generally relax and enjoy each other’s company. Events that are often celebrated with a kaffemik include birthdays, anniversaries, marriages and the like but in the past a kaffemik was also used to celebrate things such as children catching their first animal or babies reaching six months old. “Kaffemik” means “coffee please” and at a kaffemik beverages such as tea and coffee are served, with tasty treats in the form of cakes and sweets. In many instances a place is defined by its people, so what better way to experience true Greenland than

by sharing food and drink with the Nuuk locals. Not only will you get a glimpse into the domestic life of a Greenlandic home but the kaffemik is also an excellent cultural exchange opportunity. You may be interested in the local culture but your hosts will be just as curious about yours! Info about our boats All boats used for boat tour are approved by the Danish Maritime Authority for passenger transport. They are required to undergo a thorough inspection every 24 months, and are checked from bow to stern by a government certified surveyor. Sea-worthiness, life-saving equipment, engines, and radio equipment are all subject to intense scrutiny. Currently, only a few boats hold the required permits, hence the limit on the number of participants. Temperatures can be very close to 0 degree Celsius. It is highly suggested to wear trekking shoes, warm and waterproof clothes, wool hat, scarf and gloves. Due to the water reflection we suggest to use sunglasses with protective lenses. The boat ride can occasionally be bumpy depending on winds and currents. Due to the unpredictable arctic weather conditions, excursion may be cancelled for safety reasons without prior notice.

Closed Boats:

There is ample room to move about in the cabin and on deck. Boats are equipped with a washroom, heated cabins, and staffed by experienced crews. The boats can carry a maximum of twelf passengers. The closed boat tours do not feature a guide, but local boat staff will answer questions and will be at the guests’ service if they ever need any help.

Open Boats: The boats used on the open boat tour are the same boats that fishermen use each day, so you can experience authentic day-to-day Greenlandic culture. The boats can carry a maximum of four passengers.

Panoramic Fjord Tour Boat tour - Closed boat i Good to Know

Category: Boat Tour Difficulty: Easy Duration: 4 hours Min passengers: 6 Reansport: Closed boat Price: 650 Dkk Enjoy a spectacular voyage around the Nuuk fiord, the second largest fiord system in the world. Humpback whales frolic in these waters from early June to October. These huge, intelligent marine mammals may weigh up to 30 tons but they really are the acrobats of the ocean, and often put on a spectacular show. The whales venture close to the city and are also entirely comfortable with the tour boats, allowing these to get real close to them. The humpback whale is a protected species, and Touring Greenland makes an active contribution to the preservation of these gentle giants by recording the time, date and location of our whale sightings. Our records are then submitted to the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources.

Kapisillit via Closed and Open Boat Boat tour - Open & Closed boat i

Good to Know

Category: Boat Tour Difficulty: Moderate Duration: 3 - 4 days in the settlement Min: 3 persons Transport: Open and closed boat Price: 1425 dkk This tour is an experience of a lifetime where you will get to experience life in a small settlement in Nuuk. You will feel almost as if you are stepping back in time, as the settlement only has one shop where you can buy all sorts of things, ranging from baby diapers to cinnamon to guns!

The pace of life in Kapisillit is slow, giving you a great chance to take a break from your daily life and to unwind and relax. The transport to Kapisillit is a combination of a closed boat and an open boat. The boat tour takes about 3 hours depending on the weather. In this tour you are on your own in the settlement for 3 to 4 days. However don’t worry about being stranded with nowhere to sleep! We can help you arrange accommodation in a B&B or a small house.

The name Kapisillit directly translated means “salmon” and it alludes to the fact that a river near the settlement is Greenland’s only spawning ground for salmon. The area is perfect for fishing and hiking. If you’re keen to hike, the most popular trek is undoubtedly the route that leads to the edge of the Kangersuneq fjord.

Not included in the price: • Accomodation in Kapisillit We can arrange a stay for additional 400 to 800 Dkk. The village is a hunting and fishing community that dwells deep in the beautiful Nuuk • Food Fjord, about 75 km from Nuuk.

Kangeq Boat tour - Open boat i

Good to Know

Category: Boat Tour (Open boat) Difficulty: Moderate Duration: 4 hours Min passengers: 2 Transport: By open boat Price: 595 Dkk Kangeq is a former settlement in the Sermersooq municipality of southwestern Greenland. It was a traditional fishing village, abandoned in the 1980s. The name of the settlements means “promontory” in the Greenlandic language.

It was Hans Egede’s first residence when he arrived in Greenland and it was a desolate and quite primitive place. Egede was a missionary who later moved to and founded the capital Nuuk, originally referred to as Godthåb (although both Inuit and Vikings had lived in the area previously). This tour starts from Nuuk city and takes it takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to travel by boat to Kangeq. Along the way you might be lucky enough to see wildlife such as birds, seals and whales. Have your camera at the ready, as you never know when one might swoop in from above or bob up from under the waves! The famous artist Aron (1882-1869) was born and lived in kangeq. He was a sealer and painter and is famous for his descriptions of Greenland’s culture and people as well as his illustrations of Greenlandic myths and stories.

It is quite an experience walking around this small abandoned ghost town. In comparison with the abandoned settlement of Qoornoq, this small settlement is not really used by anyone today. Therefore it is almost like a museum that provides insights into the consequences of the politics in the 1950s and 1960s where inhabitants were forced to leave their homes and settle in the “big” and noisy cities. This was one of the biggest political decisions in the country’s history and had a significant impact on many lives. Not included in the price: • Lunch pack We can arrange this at an additional cost of 145 Dkk This will include a sandwich, tea, coffee, biscuits and beverage.

Hunting Tour In Small Boat Boat tour - Open boat i

Good to Know

Category: Boat Tour (Open boat) Difficulty: Hard Duration: 6 hours Min passengers: 3 Transport: Open boat Price: 995 Dkk

Since the first wave of immigration via Thule around 4000 to 5000 years ago, the Inuits in Greenland have been dependent on nature’s resources in the form of fish, birds, land mammals and marine mammals. Hunting and fishing have therefore always been a question of survival in a country in which the summer is short and the climate unsuitable for effective farming. This tour is a really authentic tour that provides great insight into the daily life of a Greenlandic hunter and fisherman (more often than not, they are both). In this tour you will experience the way in which hunters hunt at sea. The hunt will most often be for birds, including the Common Eider, King Eider, Common Guillemot, Kittiwakes, Canadian Geese and Arctic Grouse. Depending on the season, the hunt will also involve seals, Harbour Porpoises, as well as different kinds of fish such as Rockfish, Cod, Salmon, Catfish and Halibut.

When going hunting you have to remember that this is a part of daily life in Greenland - not all the meat in Greenland homes comes from supermarkets. The people of Greenland are close to nature and view themselves as a natural part of the food chain, hence why they catch their food in its natural surroundings and not from a farm.

Angling Fishing Tour Boat tour - Open boat i Good to Know

Category: Boat Tour Difficulty: Light Duration: 8 hours Min passerngers: 2 Transport: Open boat Price: 868 Dkk Get ready to set sail for fishy fun as your guide will take you via open boat to different places near Nuuk where Arctic Char are known to frequent. These places make for some great fishing. You can fish for Arctic Char that weigh up to 5 to 6 kg, all within the most fantastic surroundings.

Arctic char swim upriver in July and August, depending on where in Greenland you are. They swim upriver at high tides and there is therefore a constant migration of char, which means excellent conditions for fishing.

Although we cannot guarantee the size and amount of your catch, nor how successful your trip will be, you can be sure that the experience will be one to treasure for the rest of your life. Not included in the price:

Typically people fish for Arctic char at the mouths of rivers or at the boundary between rivers and lakes. to wildlife rather than how good your photos are. The tour is in an open boat, which means you can get close to the whales. It may sound a bit scary to get so close to these giants in such a small boat but there is no need to worry. These waters are frequented by Greelandic fishermen, and whales and fishermen interact in close proximity to each other every day without any accidents occurring. Luckily for us humans the whales are very friendly animals and they tend to be very curious about what we are doing, so

e-mail: info@touring greenland.com

they often swim near to the boats, providing a spectacular viewing opportunity. The open boat is small and does not make as much noise as bigger boats, therefore the boat is less likely to scare away the whales, which means a greater chance to get even closer to these magnificent animals. In the open boat you really feel much closer to nature, surrounded by fresh air with the wind caressing your face and the smell and sight of the ocean reminding you that humans are just a small part of this beautiful planet with its wild and wonderful creatures.
