People are the biggest motivators for me in design. To me, working on different areas is quite exciting as we learn much more than just coming up with innovative design solutions. Learning from projects not only as a designer but also as an individual has been one of the greatest gifts this field has offered me. My major areas of interest include Consumer Electronic Products, Household Products, Outdoor Public Products, Interaction Design, UI/UX etc. I am looking for a 6 months internship for my Graduation Project starting from

MOODBOARD Inspired from minimalistic, seamless and streamlined forms, the Evo will have a sleek, aesthetic design which is futuristic at the same time.

IDEATION From the data that I gathered and from the moodboard, I started exploring different form directions around the headpoints that I set up.

MODELMAKING

FORM EXPLORATIONS

HOW IT WORKS? - The Evo Smart Telephone has an inbuilt calculator, calendar, contacts and a sliding panel to write important details which gives a complete experience to the user. - Users don’t have to look for pen and paper or a calculator around their table while on an important call. - One can easily swipe through the different screens and do various functions like using the calculator or opening the phone directory while a call is going on. - The name “EVO” is derived from “evolution” as this phone is the evolved version of the existing telephones.

TECHNO-AESTHETIC DETAILING

FEEL-PEEL VEGETABLE PEELER

Brief: To study and analyze the details of a product to enhance the aesthetic value and technology of the existing product details.

THE PROBLEM

All vegetables and fruits are organic in nature. But all the different types of peelers available in the market come with a straight blade only. This leads to the peeling of excess material along with the peel. Though the blades are long, only thin peels are peeled off as the point of contact of the blade and the vegetable is quite small due to the organic form of the vegetables.

IDEATION I started sketching different form concepts and later on rendered them on Sketchbook Pro.

MODELMAKING

I first tried out the mechanism for a flexible blade with paper mock ups. I used thermocol, PVC for the initial low fidelity models. Then I made wooden molds on which I explored acrylic and steel to prepare the high fidelity models.

HOW IT WORKS?

SWITCH LOCK

BODY

- This peeler allows the user to change the curvature of the blade and match it with that of the vegetable. - This is why the name of the peeler is “Feel-Peel” as it feels the vegetable it is peeling. - Once the desired curvature is attained the user can lock the blade by sliding down the lower part of the switch.

BLADE

- The blade can be changed and the whole product can be self-assembled.

SYSTEM DESIGN

INDIAN RAILWAYS A HOLISTIC EXPERIENCE

Brief: To enhance the existing systems in a railway station to provide a holistic experience for commuters right from the beginning to the end of their journey.

STATIONS

RESEARCH & INSIGHTS The Railway Stations in India are by itself huge systems with so many sub-systems for different areas. It thus provided us with many opportunities and so many problems to work on. We began our journey by going to 3 different types of stations and identifying the various systems each of them has adopted.

KALUPUR

AUTO STAND

COOLIE PARKING

SYSTEMS

SABARMATI (NEW)

TICKET COUNTER

SABARMATI (OLD)

PASSENGERS

WHEELCHAIR

TARGET AUDIENCE

CHOSEN AREA

Our target audience for this system would be Passengers as they are the primary stakeholders of the system and all other sub-systems revolve around them.

We selected the passenger luggage transferring system to provide a better user experience for the passengers.

PROBLEM AREAS

- Passengers who wish to hire a coolie always have to

bargain with them. Thus many passengers choose to take their luggage on their own.

- Long queues at the ticket counter. Many a times

passengers break the queue and crowd near the counter.

- Passengers have to lift their luggage again and again

while changing platforms.

- Passengers who wish to use a wheelchair have to submit

their original ID to issue one. They get their ID back only when they deposit the wheelchair back at the office on platform 1. The whole process takes up a lot of time and is inconvenient. It is actually impossible when the stoppage time of a train is just 4-5 minutes.

- When passengers exit the station they are haggled by

multiple Rickshaw-wallas who await the passengers near the exit points.

IDEATION We did a lot of brainstorming and came up with a solution to design a trolley which can go on stairs.

MODELMAKING & PROTOTYPING I made a 1:1 scale model with plywood to test the concept and determine critical points before going ahead for prototyping. For the prototype we fabricated the sledgey in Mild Steel.

HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS? - There will be sledgey stands at the entrance outside and all the platforms inside the station. - Passengers can pre-book a sledgey using the support app “Locomo apart from issuing one from the stands. - 50 rupees will be levied when a sledgey is booked and the operators at the stands will return 40 rupees back once a passenger parks the sledgey back at one of the stands. 10 rupees will be charged as maintenance fee. - The sledgey will be available even for the coolies.

CONVENIENT

CONNECTED SMART

LOCOMO THE APP

Locomo is an app that will change the way railway commuters travel by trains. It connects the passengers to all the systems that exist in a railway station and offers a hasslefree experience whether they want to book a coolie or a wheelchair, order food from a famous restaurant or book an auto in peace without getting irritated by multiple rickshaw-wallas.

The app is divided into 3 parts to make the UI simple and easy to use, Pre Journey, Mid Journey and Post Journey.

Book a Coolie, Wheelchair or the Sledgey beforehand with Pre Journey.

Ever faced a mob of autowallas haggling with you as you exit the railway station? Not the welcoming experience you expect right? Well now you can avoid that by pre-booking an auto from Post Journey.

Mid Journey lets passengers order food from famous eateries and get them delivered on their seats. Imagine having Tunday kebabs on your seat as you pass by Lucknow.

DESIGN FOR SPECIAL NEEDS

STAYFIT CROSS TRAINER

RECOMMENDED FOR ELDERLY

USER STUDY

I measured the Range of Motion of few senior citizens to determine their comfort limit and maximum limit.

Becoming old can bring about a sense of loneliness and fear so keeping the elderly in mind, colours need to address warmth, security and harmony. Variety in the colours in the immediate environment can boost interest in the world and keep cognitive function alive. Softer shades of reds and oranges are warming and can help with circulation and energy levels. Peaches, apricots, warm tans, terracottas and pinks can also be used for this purpose. Reflecting on the past and thoughts of a spiritual future can also be reflected in colour choices. Soft blues, lavender, mauves and violets are colours that connect to the spiritual or reflective mood. Studies carried out in nursing/rest homes indicate that soft pinky-beiges contrasted with soft blue/greens are soothing and peaceful.

IDEATION I started with a few explorations for the crank body of the cross trainer. Then I did some quick line drawings on illustrator to achieve a simple and aesthetic form.

FORM EXPLORATIONS FOR CRANK BODY

CONCEPT 1

MODELMAKING I made a 1:3 scale model to check the working of the crank mechanism.

CONCEPT 2

CONCEPT 3

CONCEPT 4

HOW IT WORKS?

- The simple and aesthetic design of the cross trainer is inviting for users who otherwise are reluctant to use complex gym equipments. - As the design is compact and portable, the elderly can simply bring it infront of their chair or bed and work out while sitting. - The best feature of the Stayfit Cross Trainer is that the handles and the leg bars are connected. Hence they can move each other.

INTERACTION DESIGN, INTERNET OF THINGS

GUTUR GU

FEEL CONNECTED

Brief: To create simple and meaningful interactions with an object of our everyday lives, giving distant users reflective, tactile experiences to engage them with something other than a screen.

“ I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.” - Albert Einstein

THE PROBLEM

TARGET AREA

Every single person who leaves home and moves to a new place misses the company of their dear ones and the memories cherished with them to the core. It is when they realize their importance in their life and all they do is end up chatting with them on Whatsapp or Messenger, do video calls on Skype or simply talk to them on the phone.

Long distance interactions

A child resting their head on a parent’s shoulder. A squeeze of the thigh during a scary movie. These silent gestures are a critical part of the language of love, but no words, or even emoji, can properly capture them. Recently the height of technology, of interaction, has become the touch screen. This technology has brought many great experiences and innovations, but at its heart is cold, and gives the user little feedback. We want to create something which diverges from the point where the phone is the beginning and end of every digital interaction.

INSIGHTS - Everyone who stay away from home attempt to create a home away from home. - A feeling of being connected with our near and dear ones, knowing what they are doing, feeling at any time of the day, sharing emotions. - Attaching memories to objects, reliving them. - Sign of being missed by someone somewhere even in busy schedules, can light up one’s day.

HOW IT WORKS?

AVATAR

Arduino Uno

- The product consists of 2 parts: The Console and the 3D Avatars.

SLIDER LED

- The Avatars are a symbolisation of our loved ones and they have to be placed on the Console. - The form of the Avatars is inspired from different adjectives like naughty, caring, strong etc. Users can buy the avatars separately and assign a person to them on the basis of their personality.

KNOB

CONSOLE

- The Console has a moodometer which is a slider. Users can slide it to express their feelings to their distant loved ones. It will make the Console of their loved ones glow with the respective mood colour for every emotion.

OUTPUT

Slider

- The Console also has a knob which on turning, makes that user’s avatar on his loved ones’ consoles rotate signifying that he is missing them. - The ultrasonic sensors on the Console detect the user’s presence near the device and makes the LED mood lights glow. The lights dim out when the user goes away.

SIMPLE PRODUCT DESIGN

THE STEADISTICK SELFIE STICK STABILIZER

Brief: Increase usability of a selfie stick by enabling users to shoot videos with it such that the footage remains stable even when the user is moving.

IDEATION

THE PROBLEM

The available selfie sticks don’t incorporate any sort of stabilizers for capturing videos thus limiting its usage to just clicking photos. The footage shakes whenever the user is moving. The shutter button doesn’t have an option of taking videos. It doesn’t take a photo also but instead zooms the camera in. Not all mobile phones have the feature in the camera settings to toggle the volume key as a camera trigger. So users need to install third party apps in order to take photos properly.

Concept By using the principles of counterweight balancing, the new design will have a bipod wherein counterweights can be added from below to balance the weight of the phone thereby stabilizing the whole system. Ball heads with thumb screws can be used so that the user can easily change the angle of the stick and the mount.

MODELMAKING

PROTOTYPE

I made a 1:1 scale model with PVC pipes to check the working of the mechanism.

The final prototype was made with Aluminium Alloy for the telescopic arm and the vertical arm, steel counterweights and a plastic phone mount. The prototype was then tested under different circumstances with live users.

TELESCOPIC ARM

GRIP

COUNTERWEIGHT

HOW IT WORKS?

- The package will comprise of the stick, a bluetooth shutter button and 4 counterweights of 100g each. The users will fix the threaded counterweights below as per their requirement. - Angle of the telescopic arm can be changed as per the user’s desire but the vertical pod remains perpendicular at all times due to the counterweight added at the bottom. - The stick is compatible with GoPro cameras also. Thus it opens a whole new world for people who want to make short films or capture memorable videos.
