Adoption Event With the holidays in full swing, it really is the most wonderful time of year here at Animal Friends. From generous donations of much-needed goods and monetary pledges to the time that our volunteers give, we are witness to so much love and compassion every day. And it’s always sweet when a family finds their new member and takes him out of our care and into their home forever. This December, we’re hoping to make lots of holiday wishes come true with our Choose Your Family Member Adoption Event. Our kennels will be chock full of great pets – perfect for a family home. Be sure to stop by on Dec. 11-13. Last year, this event helped dozens of dogs, cats and rabbits to find homes during the holiday season and we’re hoping to have another successful year of making forever matches! ! g n i k a e r b d n u Gro On Sunday, October 11, surrounded by a passionate crowd of board members, staff, volunteers, supporters (and, of course, a gaggle of four-legged residents), we celebrated the next step in making our dream of providing affordable and accessible resources to struggling pets and pet owners throughout our region a reality. Through our CEO and President David Swisher, Board Chair Marleen Ashton, Allegheny County Treasurer John Weinstein, Honorary Chair Howard Ash and Fundraising Chair Stefania Romoff, we shared our vision of an 18,400-sq. ft. Animal Wellness Center that will not only support an increase in spay/neuter surgeries, vaccination services and other pet wellness resources but will also increase our highly demanded Chow Wagon Pet Food Bank program and enhance our busy Humane Investigations department. Renderings and floor plans were shared, our incredible fundraising progress cheered and we were so proud to unveil to official name of the building – The Howard Ash Animal Resource Center at Animal Friends. We know that the lack of affordable spay/neuter, wellness care and food is a major reason that once-beloved pets end up in shelters and why our Humane Police Officers too often need to intervene.

With this new pet wellness center we can proactively address these all-too-common issues. We’ll expand the ways we offer essential resources to those who need it most. Through these efforts, we’ll be able to increase the number of pets that stay in their homes while reducing abandonment, neglect and the pet overpopulation. The Howard Ash Animal Wellness Center, with an expected grand opening of early 2017, will enable us to further our lifesaving mission while offering compassionate, affordable resources so pets can remain in their homes – healthy and supported – where they belong.

The foundation of this program was built step by step, block by block every week. Staff and volunteers canvassed the neighborhood and met some incredible people and pets at their doorsteps in the process. Building trust with the residents of Homewood was a methodical process but it certainly proved to be worthwhile and necessary to help pet owners. Pets for Life: A Year in Review By Kaley Kaczynski, Low-Cost Spay/ Neuter Community Liaison Every day is a day of compassion when conducting Pets for Life work. In January 2014, Animal Friends partnered with the Humane Society of the United States to launch a Pittsburgh branch of the nationally acclaimed Pets for Life Program. Through this community-outreach driven program we comprehensively addressed the lack of accessible, affordable pet care in underserved communities. Through this program, we put aside preconceived notions and open

our hearts and minds to financially struggling pet owners. And we hope that entire city neighborhoods and close-knit communities will now count Animal Friends as their friend! Last year, we spayed/neutered and vaccinated 500 pets and feral cats through Pets for Life! Along the way we met many wonderful animal lovers in our target neighborhood of Homewood. This year, we continued to grow our relationships and help people care for their beloved animals. We were able to provide them the means to keep their pets at home – where they belong.

pets will be surrendered to shelters and less unnecessary euthanasias will occur. But more importantly, pets and pet owners will be healthy and happy in their homes. We are ecstatic to continue our community outreach efforts because of all the success we’ve seen in 2014 and 2015. We know that we can extend our knowledge and resources to even more pet owners in need. CooPer Say hello to my not-so-little friend! Cooper is an 85-pound, 4-year-old Pit Bull mix. Cooper has an inquisitive attitude about him and is eager to explore new things! Cooper has shown to be loyal and friendly, once he gets to know you. As a result of Cooper’s strength and play style, he will need an adult-only home with experienced handlers.

NuBi Your heart will melt the first time you look into Nubi’s gentle brown eyes. This highly energetic girl loves playing with stuffed toys and doesn’t even mind sharing them with her favorite volunteers! Nubi is very social and can’t wait for her next out-ofkennel adventure. Nubi would prefer to be the only pup in your life but would love to meet you as soon as possible!

GinGer Lynn This perky-eared, bright-eyed pup is guaranteed to greet you with a wiggly butt and a few sweet licks. Ginger Lynn is not only nicely social, but she’s one smart cookie! She will gladly sit or lie down upon request. Ginger Lynn is working on developing her leash manners and is a bit nervous in new situations. Ginger Lynn would also prefer to be the only four-legged member of the family.

Huey This handsome boy can usually be seen sitting patiently at his kennel door anticipating his next excursion. Huey thoroughly enjoys long, explorative walks. On a recent field trip, this confident canine was a mannerly passenger in the car and kept pace with his peers. Because of Huey’s strength and treat guarding, he would be best suited for an adult-only home. Someone loves Huey so much that they have sponsored his adoption fee. Huey gives a high-paw of thanks to Ronald and Paulette Heckman for their generous donation!

BoBo Typical of his breed, this hound enjoys spending time outdoors. No longer the trailblazer, Bobo is quite satisfied taking long, leisurely walks or sizing up the neighborhood from a strategically located park bench. Bobo would be most comfortable in a home with children who will respect his space and age. Toddlers may be a bit too energetic for this senior canine!

Animal Friends’ Canine Socials provide indoor exercise and playtime, turning bored dogs into happy, tired dogs!

GiGi MaRie This sweet gal hasn’t been shown much love during her lifetime. Marie was brought to the shelter by our Humane Investigation Department after she was abandoned by her owner. But Marie is the eternal optimist! In spite of her prior maltreatment, she is very friendly and extremely playful. Come meet Marie today!

AliNa Alina is a very energetic Lab mix who loves spending time going for long walks and chasing balls in the shelter’s play yards. If you take a minute to sit down with her, Alina will jump right up next to you, place her body half in your lap, and proceed to clean your face with her kisses. A fenced yard would be very beneficial for this young girl.

Gigi is a sweet and wiggly 6-year-old Rottweiler mix. She really enjoys the company of her human companions here at Animal Friends – she loves giving kisses and receiving ample amounts of petting! Gigi seems to enjoy the company of other dogs, but is not a fan of cats. This girl still has a lot of spunk so an active home is best.

Desiree You will desire Desiree once you see how sweet and gentle this beautiful 4-yearold Coonhound is. This lady is calm but also enjoys play time and long walks. Like any hound Desiree loves being outside. In fact, that is where she is the most comfortable! Desiree seems to enjoy other dogs and would do best with children 12 and older. She would prefer to live in a home without cats.

Pete As placid and amiable as he is tall, Pete is known as the gentle giant at Animal Friends. He is a 9-year-old handsome brindle Pit Bull. New places and people can be stressful for him so patience is what he needs in an owner. Due to Pete’s overall nervousness he needs an experienced dog owner who has dealt with fearful dogs in the past. Pete would love to go to a calm adult-only home where he can warm up in his own time.

Bull Bull is a very enthusiastic young guy that could benefit from some behavior training. Bull enjoys time in our play yards and loves long walks. He’ll need a home with another well-mannered dog to help him learn the rules of life. We think Bull would do best in a home with children older than 10 and without cats.

Snuggles’ name says it all - he is an absolute lover who wants nothing more than attention and love! He is a handsome Rex with thick fur. Snuggles enjoys cuddling, being held, and any sort of attention from people. He is a very energetic bunny who would do well with an area to explore and romp around in. Snuggles is sure to be a wonderful bunny for both first-time bunny owners and experienced bunny owners.

Leaving a Lasting Gift In memory of Herbert and Edna Harriet Crick Carr By Cassandra Dixon, Director of Development Animal Friends’ lifesaving work relies on the generosity and support of the public and is made possible largely because of financial gifts made to Animal Friends. These gifts come in many forms, including wills and bequests from special people who believe in the work that we do on behalf of animals. Two such people are Herbert and Edna Harriet Crick Carr. The Carrs were inspired by animals and the work of Animal Friends for a large part of their lives. Contributors to our cause since 1994, Mr. and Mrs. Carr were residents of the McKeesport area where Mrs. Carr spent most of her 89 years. Mr. Carr was a draftsman by trade and she was an executive secretary with a heart for volunteering. Together they were dedicated to animal welfare and the needs of companion pets. They were so moved

by the needs of the pets in our region that they spent a lifetime giving in creative ways. They took in dogs that needed a forever home. They also supplied area shelters various necessities, from bath towels to dog treats. These wonderful and compassionate people also remembered Animal Friends in their estate planning by leaving a bequest to our organization in their will. Mrs. Carr’s values were directly in line with the vision of Animal Friends. She truly understood the impact that animals have on all of our lives – even more so after her husband’s death. Mrs. Carr said, “I don’t know what I would have done without Jake [her most recent adoptee].”

TaHoma Tahoma is a sweet boy who absolutely loves to be petted. He is a charmer with his handsome face and an even more wonderful disposition. Once he becomes comfortable with a person, he forms a bond and greets you as soon as you near him. Tahoma is a sucker for treats of all kinds, and will eagerly nibble away at greens and other tasty treats! Thanks to Mrs. Carr’s generosity and thoughtful foresight, her love for companion animals can continue through Animal Friends’ lifesaving mission. Companion Dog Training Classes for You and Your Pet Animal Friends is dedicated to providing people and their companion animals with the tools they need to develop lasting and successful relationships with one another and their community. All training is accomplished through kind, effective positive reinforcement techniques. You will learn how positive reinforcement is a way to build a relationship with your pet.

Puppy Classes

AF 301 Kinderpuppy and AF 302 Puppy Manners follow the flexible registration format. Puppies may start class at any time, and attend as many classes as you choose within the age range of the class. No waiting for the next class session to begin. Attend classes in any order, skip a class, repeat a class, move to the next level – this program is flexible to meet the training and socialization needs of your puppy. Registration for class must be completed by 5 pm the day PRIOR to the actual class. Animal Friends’ Therapets Canine Certification Prep Class

This six week class will develop skills needed for you and your dog to conduct therapy dog visits to a variety of facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, residential treatment centers, hospices and more. Dogs should be people and dog-friendly and have basic obedience training. We will build on those skills to develop a visiting team of dog and handler. Focus will be placed on team compatibility to ensure that dog and handler work well together. The class will include a visit with your dog to a local facility for a therapy visit. This class will prepare you and your dog for the Animal Friends’ Therapets Canine Certification test. An assessment interview is required prior to enrollment in this class. Holiday Pet-Safety Tips By Katie Kurylo, Communications Coordinator As you prepare your home for this festive holiday season, keep in mind some simple measures to help keep your four-legged family members safe. Christmas Trees and Holiday Plants Pets are often interested in Christmas trees and other holiday greenery. If your furry family member is interested in the pine tree in the corner, make sure it is secured. A hefty cat on a branch, an excited jump by a dog or even a tug by a bunny could topple the tree on to more than just the gifts that Santa left underneath! Remember to keep holiday plants off of the ground and the floor because many seasonal plants, including holly, mistletoe, poinsettia and lilies – along with Christmas-tree water – can be toxic if ingested by your pets. Decorations Jingle bells, tinsel, lights and ribbon might look like toys to your pets. A gentle swat with a paw could lead to chewing and swallowing, which could lead

to an emergency trip to the vet. Holiday Feasts While sweets are a-OK for the humans in your family, keep them out of your pet’s reach. Chocolate and artificial sweetener (xylitol) are very bad for your pet. Although a few bites of plain turkey or vegetables are fine, the spices, sauces and butter used to make the holiday feast are not. Leftovers should be stored out of reach of your pets. And make sure the garbage can is secure if you think your pet will be tempted to check out what’s inside! Holiday Guests Visiting friends and family is one of the joys of the

holiday season. Soon you’ll be indulging in holiday libations with your guests – and who wouldn’t want to! Just be sure your glass of cheer is well out of your pets’ reach. And as your guests are coming and going, be sure to securely close doors and gates. In situations where your guests may not be pet-savvy, it would be best to board or keep your pet in another room for the evening. Always make sure your pet’s ID tags are up-to-date and that your pet is microchipped in case of an escape during the hustle and bustle of the evening’s activities. Louie Louie is the unofficial greeter of our Free Roam Room at Animal Friends. While Louie was found to be FIV+ (FIV is a virus that suppresses a cat’s immune system), he does not let that hold him back one bit! Louie is a handsome, presumably deaf, gentleman who loves people and gets along well with other cats. He can go home either by himself or to a household with another FIV+ kitty. BruNo Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Bruno is a strikingly handsome black cat. We think that Bruno would prefer to be an only cat as he wants all the love and attention. Remember, black goes with anything so if you would like a single cat to love and adore you, definitely consider Bruno!

Haley is a sweet girl who hasn’t met a human she doesn’t like! Her Calico markings and charming personality combine to make a truly wonderful cat. TiGress LasaGNa Lasagna came from an extreme hoarding situation that negatively impacted his behavior. We have been diligently working with him to get him ready for a loving family. Lasagna has gone from scared and wary to curious and affectionate with the help of our volunteers. He is ready for his forever home – could you be the one he has been waiting for?

Tigress first came to the shelter as a stray, found roaming around outside. She was adopted once before and lived a wonderful life for a couple years until unfortunately being returned because her owners were moving and couldn’t take her. She is one of the nicest cats around! Tigress is extremely friendly and outgoing. She loves to play but never gets too wound up. Tigress is a very clean cat - never making messes in her condo. Talk to an Adoption Counselor today about giving Tigress a loving, forever home!

Wylie This beautiful man is Wylie. He came to Animal Friends as a stray but is one of the sweetest cats we’ve ever seen! Icarus, IDris, IGor anD Irina These four stunning black and white cats came to Animal Friends as under-socialized teenage kittens. They spent several months in an awesome foster home learning that people were friendly and not something to be afraid of. They gain confidence from each other so we are adopting them out in pairs. With three boys and one girl, there is plenty of love to go around from this bunch! They have all learned to enjoy attention and would do best in a calm, patient environment. They’re a bit wary of dogs but might do well with other social cats and older children. Looking for a pair of cats to liven up your life? Stop in and see these beauties!

DoBBy Dobby is shy at first, but warms up into such a sweet cat. While he takes some time to get to know and trust people, he loves other cats and wouldn’t mind going home with a buddy. Caroline Sweet Caroline! This loving cat was found as a stray by a kind soul who couldn’t take care of her. She loves people and loves being the center of attention even more. Caroline is currently staying in an office with our COO, helping her make the decisions that make Animal Friends so wonderful. She obviously makes a trusted and loyal companion. Scout Accomplishments! Congratulations to Vin Travaglino who earned his Dog Care Merit Badge with the help of his dog, Tucker. Congratulations to Katie, Hannah, and Tori who earned their Girl Scout Silver Award by helping Animal Friends! The girls each spent over 50 hours promoting cat and kitten adoptions, planning and hosting a kitten event, and creating a video that teaches others about the importance of spaying and neutering. On behalf of the cats and kittens, thank you for your hard work! Congratulations and a big thank you to Charles Boone on his successful Eagle Scout project of hosting a gigantic supply drive in his community. At press time, he was still collecting, but so far Charles has gifted the animals with over 310 pounds of dog food, over 260 pounds of cat food, and nearly 150 pounds of cat litter! We appreciate his kindness!

Bella’s story does not end in a lonely cage, though. A kindhearted child adopts her, and together the two share a beautiful life full of friendship and fun. Our bunnies are jumping for joy over the new mobile container garden created for them by Silver Award recipients Jetta Kroll and Megan George. Fresh greens are an important part of our bunnies’ diets, and these kind-hearted Girl Scouts were happy to create this gift for the many bunnies who they’d met at our Bun Run. The girls worked over 50 hours to plan, design, and construct the garden, which they delivered with the first batch of lettuce seedlings already growing. Ryan the Rabbit

Our Happy Tail this time around comes directly from a very happy family that welcomed Ryan, a rabbit who was transferred to Animal Friends from a partner organization. Before coming to us, he was known to

avoid human contact at all costs as a result of a neglectful history. Now, well we’ll let Ryan’s mom, Rachel, tell you all about that … “My boyfriend Alan and I had wanted to adopt a pet. We went to Animal Friends not knowing what to expect but checked out the rabbits they had for adoption. We found out about their BunRuns (free-roam bunny playtime) on Saturdays and went back a few times over the following weeks to be sure we were prepared to adopt a rabbit. “Alan really liked Ryan at first sight. The BunRun showed us Ryan’s true personality and we saw that he was quite an assertive little rabbit! We decided we wanted to adopt him. He was shy at first but after a few days he warmed up. We have had him with us a few months now and he is really sweet. He has become

more social and will even jump up on the couch if he feels we aren’t giving him attention! We bought him a few tunnels to run through and he loves darting from in and out of them and jumping around the house. “My favorite thing he does though is around 9 p.m. when he gets a handful of hay pellets before bedtime. He really enjoys this new brand of pellet we’re trying. In fact, he comes running out of nowhere and jumps all over us! If we’re not quick enough, he’ll put his head inside of the bag to grab the first bite!” Making happy matches like this are the best gift of all for our adoption team.
