This March marks a very special time for Animal Friends – it’s the 10th anniversary of the move to our Camp Horne Road location. It’s been an entire decade since Animal Friends made the move from our old stomping grounds in the Strip District to our current 75 wooded acres. As the year begins and we look ahead to this exciting celebration, we can’t

help but reminisce about Animal Friends’ beginnings by featuring memories from staff members who were there for our big move. We know you’ll enjoy what they have to say about that exciting day in 2006 when we opened the doors of the Caryl Gates Gluck Resource Center to the public and launched the beginning of a new era for Animal Friends and animal welfare in our region.

Dear Friend,

It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since Animal Friends moved from the Strip District to our home in Ohio Township! It sounds so cliché, but it feels like only yesterd ay . . .

I was asked recently to share my fondest memory of our move to the Caryl Gates Gluck Resource Center. I remember thinking what an easy question to answer! Hands down my favorite memory is the day we transported the animals from the Strip District to the new Center. After months of careful planning to devise the least disruptive way to move nearly 100 animals – some of them elderly, some of them ill and all of them certainly confused – the day came to load them into the caravan of waiting vehicles. Once here, we placed them in their new spaces. Then we waited. And we watche d. Hopeful that we got it right. Then it happened. One by one, the animals sniffed and circled, checking out their new spaces . . . and then simply curled up and lied down. That was when I knew we had succeed ed. Celebrating this milestone also reminds me of the important people who have made our many successes possible. They have supplied ample amounts of energy, vision, tenacity and commitment. And, as time rolls along, we are faced with the inevitable, bittersweet good-byes of these people who have been so integral in our success. Kathy Hecker is certainly one of them. Kathy Hecker began her tenure with Animal Friends in 1992 and deserve s the credit for the creation of our Humane Investigations Department. Through her leadership and role as our Humane Society Police Officer, Kathy changed the face of animal welfare in our region. It’s nearly impossible to measure the sheer number of lives she has affected in her 24 years of service. From the thousands of animals she has rescued to the education she has shared in our communities, she will certainly be missed. We thank her for her dedication and wish her only the best on her retirement. So as we celebrate Animal Friends’ anniversary at our Camp Horne Road location we also celebrate the many people – like Kathy – who have made it possible. To our staff, volunteers and to you, our supporters, thank you for believing in a more humane and compassionate community for all of our animal friends. In appreciation,

By Carol Whaley, Director of Clinic Services 6. By spaying or neutering your pet, At Animal Friends, we’re proud of the important services our Low-Cost Spay/ Neuter Department provides to our community and we love to see the positive impact on both the people and pets who benefit from them. And, just to give you an overview of the work we do, we wanted to share our Top Ten List of reasons to use or recommend our LowCost Spay/Neuter Program and Vaccine Services. 10. We offer high-quality, low-cost services! Our prices are the most competitive in the region. 9. Thanks to our partnership with the Humane Society of the United States, our community outreach programs focus on local underserved populations. In 2015, through a grant, we were able to provide more than 550 spay/neuter surgeries and 1,300 vaccinations for pets in the Homewood area at no cost to their financially-strapped owners. 8. Our Trap-Neuter-VaccinateReturn (TNVR) Program has kept feral cat populations from growing in many local communities – including Swissvale, Sharpsburg, Wilkinsburg and Larimer. 7. From scheduling appointments, to providing education about feral cats, to offering trap rentals, to providing volunteer trappers for certain projects, Animal Friends provides full support for feral cat caregivers through our TNVR Program.

you are proactively taking a step toward solving the pet overpopulation problem and eliminating euthanasia of homeless animals in our region. Thank you for being a part of the solution!

5. Pit Bulls are wonderful dogs, but there are just too many filling our shelters. To combat this issue, we created Project Pit Bull, which offers $30 spay/neuter surgeries for Pit Bulls whose owners meet certain low-income guidelines. 4. Animal Friends’ Low-Cost Vaccine Clinics offer rabies vaccines, microchips, flea treatments and more several times each month. Separate cat and dog areas provide a safer and less stressful experience for your pets.

“I remember loading everyone up (cats that is) and moving them to the new shelter. I also remember losing a whole box of files (never did find them!). I remember my first adoption in the new shelter. He was an 11-yearold, blind cat and he went home with a family with two young girls that wanted him simply because he was 11-years old and blind. His name was Magee. Crazy times!”

Dana Schultz Humane Education Coordinator “When we were at the [Strip District location], the classroom space for the children’s programs was down a block from the main shelter. You can imagine how pleased I was to find in

“I just remember getting lost in the new shelter. It was huge compared to what we were used to! Enormous! To see Animal Friends grow after just 10 years seems like a dream. I can’t quite believe it.”

Kathleen Beaver Chief Operating Officer “After completing several site visits for potential properties for our new home, I was simply struck when I stepped on to this beautiful, forested property. I began to walk up the overgrown path to the upper level where the real estate agents were gathered. I startled a deer. She simply stared at me -- transfixed. Before trotting off into the woods, I was certain I heard a soft voice say, “Welcome home.” And this magical property has helped us rescue, heal and find homes for thousands of pets ever since.”

10 Toys and Games for Your Rabbit By Suzanne Denk, Animal Enrichment Specialist By introducing a different homemade toy to your rabbit every day, you can keep her playtime and her living space both mentally and physically stimulating—you’ll be giving her the opportunity to think and explore their space in novel ways. Providing enrichment activities can decrease your rabbit’s stress, provide her with a sense of control over her environment and prevent undesirable behavior. When you offer your rabbit a new toy, be sure to remove the toy you gave her the day before in order to keep the toys interesting to your rabbit. Here are some ideas for home-made toys that are

sure to please your resident rabbit! 1. Sushi Roll: Cut a 2 in. by 6 in. piece of corrugated paper. Tightly roll up herbs (dill, parsley, or cilantro) in the corrugated paper and tie the roll with raffia. 2. Puzzle Tube: Cut small holes in a paper towel tube. Fill with hay and a couple treats and press in the ends of the tube to seal. 3. Wheat Grass Container: Grow wheat grass in a small plastic container (lunch pack applesauce or dressing cups work very well). 4. Paper Tunnel: Shape craft paper or newspaper into a tunnel and roll the edges of the tunnel to secure. Or, you can cut out the bottom of a paper bag for an instant tunnel. 5. Pumpkin Hay Bag: Fill a brown lunch bag with hay and a portion of your rabbit’s daily pellets. Twist the top into a stem and tie it closed with raffia.

Mr. Elvis is a handsome rabbit with a soft mane, fit for a king! He is a young, very friendly fellow. Mr. Elvis enjoys being petted and interacts with people when they talk to him! He is super sweet and loving and is sure to make a great house bunny! Come meet Mr. Elvis today … before he leaves the building! Mr. Elvis would like everyone to know that Sandra Diehl is ‘Always on His Mind’ because of her generous donation. Thank you, Sandra!

6. Hay Carrot: Gather hay into a log about 6 in. long. Wrap the log with raffia starting about a third of the way down and leave a loose tail of raffia to tie off the log. Continue to wrap the log with the raffia, tying additional lengths of raffia as needed. Gradually pull the raffia tighter and to create a carrot shape and tie ends of raffia to secure. 7. Foraging Game: Make a trail of pellets, greens or dry organic botanicals for your rabbit to follow. This encourages your rabbit to sniff, search and think. 8. Newspaper Sandbox: Fill a shallow cardboard box with lots of shredded newspaper for digging and tossing. 9. Egg Carton Puzzle: Cut a cardboard egg carton in half, fill with hay and a couple of treats and close securely. 10. Pellet Pierogi: Cut a circle from brown craft paper or newspaper and fold the circle in half. Place pellets, hay or a treat along the fold and roll the edges of the paper to seal and form a pierogi.

Try a new enrichment activity every day with your rabbit to decrease your rabbit’s stress and encourage her to use her mind. Every activity takes just minutes and will bring lots of satisfaction to both you and your bunny!

Elmo found her forever home in 2009!

“Moving all of the animals into the brand-new kennels at the shelter was so exciting. We particularly remember a cat named Elmo – who was neither red nor male like on Sesame Street. She was a long-term resident and was one of the first animals we entered into our new database.”

Kathy Weber Animal Caregiver “It was around that time that I adopted my cat Morez. He came to Animal Friends through our Humane Investigations Department and was severely neglected … I can’t believe it’s been 10 years!”

Eula Houston with Mr. Lloyd Gluck

Eula Houston Animal Care & Enrichment Coordinator “It made it all worth it for me to be able to meet and get my photo taken with Mr. Gluck. To be able to meet someone like him who cared that deeply for animals, it made my heart pound. It was a great day.”

Joanne Moore Chief Programs Officer “Grand opening day was extraordinary. There were nearly 3,000 people here to see the new shelter. It was a very special day. I also remember thinking, ‘Wow. We have 91 parking spaces. How will we ever fill 91 parking spaces?’ And now look at us. Parking is at a premium most days! How we’ve grown!”

Elsie Kestral

taNya Sweet Tanya likes people and is very affectionate. She enjoys being petted and combed. A game with the teaser mouse is a welcome break and a chance to stretch her legs. Tanya came to Animal Friends as a transfer from another shelter and she’s impatiently waiting for her forever family to come along. Make Tanya’s day by giving her a loving forever home – she’s a perfect 10! Tanya thanks Harry and Christine Gruener for their donation in honor of Callie.

Kestral came to Animal Friends covered in fleas, underweight and anemic. Thankfully, she is a strong little cat and has made a wonderful recovery in a foster home! She has genetically smaller eyes which impair her vision but don’t cause her any pain. Kestral is a sweetheart who enjoys the company of others, both feline and human. Now that she is feeling better, Kestral is an active and curious cat who loves to play with toys. She even made friends with a 6-monthold kitten in her foster home. This brave cat is definitely deserving of 10 minutes of your time. Come meet her today! Kestral gives two paws up to Gary and Kristen Gribble for their donation!

SPriNkles Sprinkles found her way to Animal Friends through our Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Program. Unfortunately, Sprinkles is FIV+ which means she needs an extra special person to step forward and give her a home. Sprinkles likes the company of other cats and would probably do well in a home with other FIV+ felines. Sprinkles needs a patient, loving owner who is ready to open their home to a cat who might need a little more time to adjust living in a home than most. We rate Sprinkles a 10 out of 10! Sprinkles thanks Ernest and Ella Watt for their donation in honor of Demon, WoLucy, and Squeeky Love.

12

Elsie has been here far too long waiting for her forever home! She arrived at Animal Friends after being rescued from a neglectful and cruel situation. We have shown her love and compassion and now she reciprocates. She can be a bit withdrawn and shy at times, but once you develop a relationship with her she is a wonderful cat. Nine out of 10 staff members agree – Elsie is the cat for you! Come meet Elsie today! Elsie thanks Thomas and Andrea Topolewski for their donation in memory of Joanna Conlon.

TiGress Tigress was found in 2008 as a friendly stray. She was adopted out but returned in 2014 when her family moved. Tigress is a sweet girl. She is extremely friendly and outgoing, loves to play but never gets too wound up. She doesn’t mind if the play session is with 10 jingle balls or 10 feather toys – this girl loves to play! Tigress is a very clean cat, never making messes in her condo. This sweet cat is just waiting for you. Come meet her today! Tigress appreciates Joy Greenan for her donation in honor of her feline friends, Ben and Bear.

At Animal Friends, dogs and bunnies ages 5 and older and cats ages 6 and older are Red Collar Society pets. Their adoptions come with special benefits!

Livey Siren Siren loves to sit near you. She loves to be petted and to be brushed. She is a bit shy when meeting new people, but warms up in short order when given some attention. We feels she scores a 10 on the social and loving scale! Siren’s sweet and calm demeanor would probably fit well into a variety of homes. She spent some time in a foster home and did wonderfully! When meeting other foster pets, she was reluctant at first but soon grew to accept them and share her space. Please ask the adoption desk if you would like to meet this sweet, affectionate girl. She would love to find a forever home! Siren thanks Robert and Dolores Solonickne for their donation in honor of Britta, Jack and Smokey. Meow!

LasaGNa Lasagna is part of the pasta cats, a group of cats that came from an extreme hoarding situation. Sadly, without much human contact in his life, Lasagna was very scared and confused when he came to Animal Friends. Dedicated volunteers, foster parents and staff have been diligently working with Lasagna and we can happily report he has gone from scared and wary to curious and affectionate! Come meet Lasagna today! Lasagna thanks Rachel Herisko for her donation in honor of Lady Herisko.

Livey is a beautiful cat who lived with one family her entire life, until that family could no longer care for her. She was initially uneasy with new people but has come a long way since then. She is currently living in a foster home and has adjusted very well! Livey is looking for a 10-star home where she can show her love! Livey sends purrs of thanks to Lisa Goetz for her donation in honor of Emma, Simon, Ubu and Weezie.

Seymour This old soul is Seymour, a regal grey Tabby who was originally adopted out as a kitten but was unfortunately returned 12 years later. Seymour has had a rough time since returning to Animal Friends but has flourished in foster homes. Seymour would make a wonderful companion for someone. He is content to sit by and read with you or watch TV but don’t think that will excuse you from petting duty! This big boy will curl in your lap and will only accept 10-star back and ear rubs. Seymour really needs a friend who will see his potential as a great companion. Call our Adoption Desk to schedule a meet-and-greet with this wonderful cat today. Seymour is so grateful for Richard and Cindy Fraer and their generous donation!

DoBBy When Dobby first came to Animal Friends, he was extremely shy. Since then, he has started to come out of his shell! He loves to play and is much more confident when playing. Because Dobby can still be shy, loud noises and a lot of activity can be scary for him. Dobby would do best in a calmer home where he can be a perfect 10! Dobby sends licks and love to Gloria Spratt for her generous donation. Thanks Gloria!

Meet some of our adoptable cats at Petco at 59 Fort Couch Road, Bethel Park, PA, 15241. Visit Monday through Friday from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. or Sunday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Alexa and Athena We at Animal Friends understand that it takes some animals a little longer to find a forever home than others. Like people, each pet has their own charms and quirks and we strive to learn them all to find a perfect match for each of our residents. Alexa and Athena are two cats that spent their fair share of days at the shelter – both of them spending more than two years waiting for a forever family to come along. Both cats came to Animal Friends from terrible conditions – Alexa from a hoarding case and Athena from a neglectful situation. “Alexa enjoys the [Christmas] lights. In fact, they are still up inside the house. I cannot bear to take them down. Alexa is such a sweetheart! Although not a lap kitty, she is a social cat. She follows me around the house,

the right woman to take these lovely cats home.

Susan first adopted Athena, who became fast friends with Susan’s resident cat Galileo. Susan reported that she frequently found them napping together. Sun spots and heated cat beds quickly became favorite places to relax. Susan wrote to us, “[Athena] is an active kitty. She will race me to the living room when it is time to play in the evening and to her bowl when it is feeding time. She loves her head rubs and will lick my hand and face as gently as a kitten.” As you can imagine, we were delighted when just a few short months later, Susan came back to Animal Friends and adopted Alexa, another long-term resident. She recently wrote us a New Year’s update:

especially into the kitchen! “We have a regular playtime each evening with the laser pointer. She has taught Athena that this is fun so the two of them chase the little light. Alexa and Athena have become best buddies, as I had hoped. I am so happy with my kitties! Thank you so much for helping me to bring them home.” Animal Friends thanks Susan for opening her heart and home to Athena and Alexa. Interested in making your happy “tail” come true?
