31 Compassion!

While technically the word “compassion” is a noun, here at Animal Friends we are breaking the rules of English and making it a verb! Because, during this month-long fundraising campaign, we are challenging the Pittsburgh region to put their compassion into action. Sure, we are all concerned about the plight of our animal friends (that’s why you are reading our Petsburgh Press, after all!).

But what are you doing about it?

continued from cover... During our 31 Days of Compassion, we are asking you to make your compassion real, tangible and active! There are so many ways to do that – adopt one of our shelter residents, give food to our Chow Wagon Pet Food Bank, volunteer, spread the word about our progressive programming, make a donation, visit our blog for ways to enrich your pets, or spay or neuter your pet. That’s just to name a few (flip to page 16 to see how Animal Friends turns compassion into lifesaving work)! The goal of our 31 Days of Compassion campaign is to raise enough money to support our programs while getting you to resolve to do something compassionate – no matter how big or small! Kitten Season is Coming! It’s that time of year that we’re gearing up for an influx of furry little ones. Every year kitten season is too much of a cute thing as we stretch our resources to make an impact on cat overpopulation. If you’ve been wanting to make a difference, it’s the perfect season to lend a hand: 1. Spay or neuter your cats or community cats. Contact our Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Department at 412.847.7004 for more information. 2. Donate much-needed supplies or make a donation to purchase those supplies. Find the list of items needed on our Amazon Wish list here: http://amzn.com/w/10JH8Z5DHT0DR 3. Become a foster cat parent – it’s an incredibly rewarding experience. Find out more information at www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/Foster. 4. If you’re thinking of adopting, consider an adult cat. So often the wonderful calm, mature adults are left behind when the irresistible babies show up. Even if you are unable to help in these ways, be an ambassador in your community! Spread the word about the most effective way to combat kitten season and overpopulation: spay and neuter. Together, we can make a difference!

PumPkin Pumpkin, a shy but sweet girl, has been at Animal Friends for quite a while. She is housebroken and crate trained and enjoys car rides and long walks. Pumpkin needs a canine sibling in her new home to help her feel more comfortable and confident. After all, everyone needs a buddy! Are you the kind family that could give Pumpkin her forever home? Pumpkin gives licks and kisses to Abby Corbin for her donation in honor of Sophie Jo.

CeLiA Celia is a big, playful girl with lots of love to give. She still needs to develop some manners and our behavior classes offered through Animal Friends University may do just the trick! Celia would prefer a home without small children or other pets. Say hello to Celia today!

PoNGo HiGGiNs Higgins came to us during our annual New Year’s Eve Rescue. He is a very wiggly and friendly guy and is always looking to play. Higgins needs a family that can keep up with him! He also gets along with other dogs so a canine sibling might be just the ticket for this energetic guy. Come say hello to him today! Higgins says, “Woof!” to Julia Cooper for her donation in honor of her animals.

Pongo came to Animal Friends as a puppy and we quickly realized what a great dog he is. He is deaf so his owners will have to learn new ways to communicate with Pongo but our adoption counselors are eager to help. Because of his deafness, Pongo would do best in a home with children older than 12. He’s not a fan of cats but we’re sure that he’ll love you! Pongo thanks Donna Rankin for her donation to the Petsburgh Press.

ANGelou Angelou is a laid-back kind of gal. She would love a calm, quiet home without children younger than 12 to match her calm, quiet temperament. She would do best with a patient, forever family – one that will let her warm up to them in her own time. Come meet Angelou today!

Animal Friends’ Canine Socials provide indoor exercise and playtime, turning bored dogs into happy, tired dogs!

BuBBles & Pai Pai TiGer Tiger is an independent fellow whose favorite activities are playing with squeaky toys and catching tennis balls! Tiger is very treat-motivated and responds well to training when using tasty rewards. We’d like Tiger’s new family to be experienced dog handlers. Tiger has told us he would prefer a home with no cats. Come say hello to him today!

Bubbles, an 8-month old Australian Shepherd mix, and Pai Pai, a 1-year old Corgi-Great-Dane mix, are best friends and must go home together. These gorgeous young ladies are incredibly playful and smart. They will require a cat-less family with children older than 15 that can be patient with both of these shy (but sweet!) ladies to coax them out of their shells. Talk with an Adoption Counselor today to learn more about these quirky pups!

MaNDy

RoN Ron is a 2-year-old Black and Tan Coonhound mix. A sweet fellow, Ron would do wonderfully as a family dog. His gentle nature lends itself well to kids of all ages (although he’d prefer a home without cats!) Ron wouldn’t mind having a canine sibling either. Come meet him today!

This gentle girl never expected to find herself at the shelter. Mandy came to Animal Friends when her owner became ill and could no longer care for her. This sweet soul, however, is the eternal optimist. Mandy likes to explore the outdoors and would make a wonderful walking companion. Mandy can often be seen chasing tennis balls or flinging her favorite stuffed toys in the air! Mandy would perfectly complement a family with children over twelve. She may be able to live with other dogs, but would prefer a home without cats. Mandy thanks Richard and Cheryl Clark for their donation in honor of Louie

BLuey Bluey, a 9-year-old Beagle mix, came to Animal Friends from a small, rural shelter in West Virginia where he just wasn’t having any luck finding a forever home. Eternally young at heart, Bluey is a shy but sweet pup. He’s to find his forever home where he can spend his golden years cuddling up with his human companions, going on walks and sniffing out treats!

Alexie

Courier

Alexie is an affectionate rabbit who enjoys being petted by people that she meets. She’s a good-looking bun with an adorable white patch on her stomach! While she’s people-friendly, we believe that Alexie would be good in a home with older children. If you’re looking for a curious, beautiful rabbit to hop into your heart, come meet Alexie!

Courier is an affectionate, loving bunny who is quite curious about the world around him and would make a great first bunny for a loving family. He is quite friendly and enjoys being petted at our weekly BunRuns by young and old alike. He’s an adorable little guy who is eager for a home to call his own.

Baskerville Baskerville is a wonderful bunny looking for a forever home. She enjoys frolicking with her fellow buns in our weekly BunRuns. Her favorite treat to munch on is lettuce, and she will happily sit with you on the floor while you pet her. Baskerville also loves jingle balls and frequently tosses one around in her cage. Come say hello to this sweet girl today!

Did you know that rabbits can be litter trained just like a cat? Rabbits are very neat animals and, when trained, use their litter boxes nearly all the time.

Siren Siren, a 5-year old Calico, loves to sit near people. She loves to be petted and brushed. She is a bit shy when meeting new people, but warms up in short order when given some attention. Siren’s sweet and calm demeanor would probably fit well into a variety of homes. Ask our adoption counselors to meet this sweet, affectionate girl. She would love to find a forever home! Siren sends head-butts to Elaine Tokosh for her donation.

TiNk Tink is a 5-year-old gorgeous gray and white tabby. Despite coming from a neglectful situation Tink now relishes the attention she receives. She enjoys playtime and hanging out with some of her volunteers. This sweet cat is ready to find her forever home. Could it be yours?

ArTHur Caroline Caroline is a sweet and sassy kitty. Caroline likes people and absolutely loves to be the center of attention. She would prefer to be the only pet in the home so that she can get all of the love and attention that she needs! Caroline is a staff favorite and is impatiently waiting for her forever home with a savvy cat owner. Meet her today!

How can you deny Arthur’s rugged good looks? This little, 8-year old male has a distinctive clip in his ear and a cataract in one eye but those only add to his charm! Arthur does get along with other cats and is patiently waiting for just the right person to see past his scruffy exterior and to give him the home he so deserves! Arthur thanks Cindy and Richard Fraer for their donation. Meow!

MaMie Mamie is a sweet and gentle kitty that likes people. She likes to play and sit on a windowsill. She has a secret fondness for catnip treats. Mamie has an immune deficiency called FIV, so she needs to be an only cat or live with another FIV+ kitty. Our FIV cats are some of the most affectionate cats in the shelter and will make wonderful companions. Come meet Mamie and her friends today. Mamie would like to thank Madeline Miele for her donation. Thank you, Madeline!

At Animal Friends, dogs ages 5 and over, cats age 6 and over, and bunnies older than 5 years are Red Collar Society pets. Their adoptions come with special benefits!

Tarmac Tarmac is a beautiful 2-year-old male who wandered onto Animal Friends property late last summer. Tarmac was originally an extremely frightened cat but with the loving care of staff and volunteers, he has blossomed into a sweet boy who enjoys nothing more than curling up on a lap. As he’s still a bit shy, he would enjoy a home with a patient owner who would give him plenty of time to learn to trust in a new situation. We know with time and patience, Tarmac is going to become a wonderful loving cat. Tarmac thanks Paula Schaukowitch for her donation in honor of Snowflake and Leonid.

Snowflake When you walk past Snowflake’s room here at the shelter, the first thing you might think is, “Wow! What a big cat!” and you wouldn’t be wrong. Snowflake is an extra large cat who is just full of love. Snowflake is about 7-years old and he loves attention. He’d prefer to be the only kitty (to steal all of your attention for himself!). Come meet this sweet boy today.

LuciLLe This green-eyed cutie can be shy at first, but she’ll quickly warm up to you. She loves to cuddle and give chin and head butts – very high compliments coming from a cat. She’s 3-years-old and has a stress-free, happy-go-lucky attitude. She’s currently living at our Cranberry PetSmart location, so stop by to meet this friendly and warmhearted kitty! Lucille thanks Margaret Dadisman for her generous donation!

clementine Oh my darling, Clementine! She longing for a home where she will be loved once again. Her foster mom says she is like your shadow, always nearby. She loves attention, being scratched and petted. She enjoys playing with catnip toys. Her favorite things are looking at the world through the nearest window and watching some TV shows! Talk with an adoption counselor and see if Clementine would be a good match for you.

Zoraya Loving attention and eager to become your friend, this darling little 3-year-old tabby will quickly win your heart! He has lots of energy and loves to explore, especially by climbing. When he’s not busy playing, he solicits plenty of attention. Even though he has lived with other cats we think that he would enjoy being the center of attention. Zoraya thanks Barbara and Jennie Demcisak, who gave in memory of Molly.

BlonDie No, it’s not a mistake. Blondie is a beautiful 8-year-old male cat. Blondie is outgoing and enjoys spending time with staff and volunteers. We think that he would prefer to be the only cat in the family. He may be able to live with a catfriendly dog in his new home. Please stop in and meet this gorgeous, long haired, orange Tabby. We know he will win your heart the same way he won ours. Blondie gives two paws up to Susan Borres for her generous donation.

Mission

Sugar, a young Pit Bull, came to Animal Friends to be spayed, microchipped and vaccinated through Pets for Life. Her family rescued her from their next-door neighbor’s abandoned house. Sugar was our 10,000th spay/neuter surgery of 2014! Without pets like Sugar, we wouldn’t be well on our way to end pet overpopulation in our region.

During this month-long campaign we will be raising awareness so that we can continue – and further – our compassionate and progressive mission: To ensure the well-being of companion animals, while ending overpopulation, abuse and unwarranted euthanasia. Our campaign will give the community an opportunity to learn about and participate in activities that support Animal Friends’ programs.

Diane Friske

This month, we are asking you to be a part of our future by donating to our mission-focused programs. Read on to find out more about our how our lifesaving mission and vision are put to work. We are a proud partner of the Humane Society of the United States’ Pets for Life Program. This community outreach-driven program comprehensively addresses the lack of accessible, affordable pet care in underserved communities.

Diane Friske has dedicated almost seven years to rescuing, fostering and adopting pets with Animal Friends. When Diane was offered a volunteer opportunity with the Pets for Life program, there was no question that the program was perfect for her. Thank you Diane, for your endless compassion for people and their pets!

One family sought out Pets for Life for help for their cat, Callie. They knew her health was declining but could not afford vet care. So we set up Callie’s spay surgery. The family knew that the surgery would improve her quality of life but little did they know it would save her life! During surgery, our medical team removed a two pound infected uterus from Callie’s tiny seven-pound frame. It’s through our progressive programming, like Pets for Life, that provides pet owners – of all income levels – the access to necessary medical care to keep their beloved pets.

Captain Jack

Captain Jack was a rabbit who knew what he wanted, when he wanted it! It was clear that he needed an experienced crew to sail with, so he stayed with us for a while until we could find a first mate that was able to care for him. Jessica, a fellow rabbit rescuer, was up to the task and her and Jack sailed off into the sunset last November.

Make your compassion real, tangible and active. There are so many ways to do that – adopt one of our shelter residents, give food to our Chow Wagon Pet Food Bank, volunteer or spay or neuter your pet – just to name a few!

Snowball was Animal Friends’ very first Therapets rabbit! The Therapets Program sends experienced volunteer teams to hospitals, nursing homes, residential treatment facilities, schools and libraries throughout Allegheny and Beaver Counties. Each team visits with people of all ages who need a little animal companionship and will bring smiles to the visitors’ faces.

Chow Wagon Program

Our Chow Wagon Program was born to provide assistance for people and their pets. Our Chow Wagon supplies pet food and treats to help pet-owning families keep their furry family members, even during challenging economic times. This program relies solely on the support and donations from school groups, Scout troops and individual donors. Without their generosity, we wouldn’t have been able to provide more than 30,000 pounds of donated pet food to 7,400 families that are clients of 24 area food pantries in 2014. And we absolutely love to hear firsthand accounts of how our programs are affecting the community:

“On behalf of our food pantry, I would like to thank you so much for all that your organization does for our food bank. Many of our clients have pets and look forward to receiving pet food. It’s Animal Friends’ Vision To: Act as an advocate on behalf of animals in crisis and as an enforcer of their rights and protection.

H U M A N E I N V EST I G AT I O N S Animal cruelty, dog fighting and animal neglect are issues that are all too common in our area. The reality of these activities touches the lives of all citizens, petowning and non-pet-owning alike. At Animal Friends, our Humane Investigations department serves as a valuable resource for citizens to call to report animal abuse. We provide investigative and law enforcement support to all of Allegheny county, ensuring that all animals are given the protection they are due under the law.

Victoria

Victoria, a young Pit Bull mix, was found running loose in McKeesport. Animal Friends was called after local animal control facilities realized Victoria, who was incredibly emaciated, needed some extra medical attention. Victoria is doing well today and is gaining weight under our Medical Department’s watchful care.

Tahoma & Verdana

The day that our Humane Police Officers found these young Lionhead rabbits was the day that they got a new lease on life. At only a few weeks old, Tahoma’s and Verdana’s owners abandoned them by letting them loose in the wild. They’re currently in a foster home preparing to find their forever homes!

Here at Animal Friends we absolutely adore what we do but it’s the stories from our adopters, clients and supporters that put it into perspective. Seeing how our work affects those in our community propels us to work harder and we just had to share one of our more recent updates from an adopter! We hope that you enjoy this sweet letter (as much as we did!) from Cindy who gave Chance, a 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, his forever home:

[Adoption Counselor] David,

Hello! Just thought I’d write and give you an upda te on Chance … First off, he’s an excellent truck passenger! The man who had him before must have taken him for rides beca use, as soon as the engine starts, he sits quietly until we arrive at our destination (then it’s a different story ). He’s quick to learn too … the old adage certainly doesn’t apply to him! He takes his treats gently out of my hand now (at first I was concerned about losing my finge rs), and has no issues letting me pick him up – whet her to get into the truck or to hold him up at the window to let him watch the birds and squirrels at the feeders outside. He’s also giving me a lot of exercise as he runs, not walks, me around the lake at Deer Lakes Park! If it’s too cold, we go to Petco and he trots me around and around and around the store only stopping to look curio usly at the fish and, strangely enough, seems fascinate d by their turtle – go figure! I shoveled a path around the house so that we could

20

walk in the evenings. His response? “Path? I don’ t need no stinkin’ path!!!” And off he goes, bounding throu gh the snowy yard with me in tow! He must have lived in an apartment building (e.g. , his experience with elevators) and is enjoying the woo ded areas surrounding my house. So, we seem to beco ming fast friends, and I think he enjoys it here with me. The video [Animal Friends’ Furry Friday] really captured his exuberant spirit, and the script referencing him as being like an “older, single, retired uncle who drive sa convertible” couldn’t have described him better! So, it’s no wonder that we get along so well. I’m grateful to you and Animal Friends for taking such good care of him until we were able to find each other. As a 10-year-old, I’m sure that you all had concerns about him finding a good home and I hope I’m prov iding one which will let him to continue “enjoying life to the fullest.” With gratitude,

Cindy (and Chance)
