“Welcome to Jurassic Bark!” a man greets you, handing you a bag. Still a bit confused, you rustle through the bag to find a pamphlet declaring you’ve arrived at Animal Friends’ Jurassic Bark in the Park.

Footsteps rumble behind you as you fall forward through the thick, dense underbrush. You’re tired and thirsty. You stumble out of the woods and come across … a dog dressed as a Velociraptor?

sweet when they do finally find that forever family. More times than not, there are tears of joy because we know they are not a product of their unfortunate past. They are simply trying to overcome it.

Happily Ever After

Animal Friends’ Humane Investigations Program serves as an invaluable resource for Allegheny County residents – human and animal alike. While our Humane Police Officers attempt to solve each case with education and supplies, sometimes legal intervention is required. In 2014, legal intervention brought 141 animals to Animal Friends. Some of these rabbits, cats and dogs made the evening news or the morning paper. But only after the limelight dims can the next leg of their journeys begin – finding loving families to take them home.

Some come with medical challenges from abuse. Some may have behavioral challenges from severe neglect. But most have a spirit so strong that no amount of abuse or neglect can break it. Take Marie for example. She’s been a resident of Animal Friends since July of last year. She was confiscated when she was found abandoned and left outside without food or water. Despite her past, this sweet girl consistently has a smiling face and wagging tail. She thinks she has it good now but it won’t hold a candle to being in a loving home.

Confiscating an animal from a home is always the last option for our Humane Police Officers but it’s the crucial, first step on the path to a new home. Like Marie, these animals will have a place at Animal Friends as long as it’s necessary. Animal Friends is committed to Marie, and all animals like her, and to providing training, enrichment, socialization and as much love as possible while they’re here.

We’re there for our residents to forever home and beyond, but in We have dozens of other dogs, cats and rabbits, just like Marie, staring out order for us to be there for beyond, you need to provide the forever at potential adopters through their home. We thank our sponsors… By Carol Whaley, Director of Clinic Services Pit Bull Terriers end up in shelters in large numbers due to myths and misperceptions, which impact public opinions of the breed and reduces the adoption rates of these dogs in local animal shelters. That’s why Animal Friends, with funding support from PetSmart Charities, is participating in the “Primp Your Pit” spay/neuter campaign. Through this campaign, Animal Friends is offering $20 spay/neuter surgeries and free nail trims for Pit Bull Terriers and Pit Bull Terrier Mixes during the month of August. This special $20 rate is even less than our usual $30 Project-Pit-Bull spay/

neuter rate but is only available for a limited amount of surgery spots. Pet parents who wish to take advantage of this offer must mention the “Primp Your Pit” campaign when they call to schedule their appointment. The campaign is based on availability.

Petsburgh Press sponsorships are a great way to honor or say thanks to a friend or pet. If you would like to sponsor the adoption fee of an animal, please contact our Adoptions Department at 412.847.7002.

HastiNGs Hastings is a calm, social guy who always seems to have a smile on his face. This mature fellow enjoys leisurely strolls. This sweet boy also has a lighter side to his personality and enjoys playing with toys. He can be somewhat timid and easily startled by noise, so he’s best suited for a home with children older than 12.

PetuNia Petunia, a sweet 6-year-old Pit Bull mix, came to Animal Friends as a stray with a painful skin condition. But she didn’t let that get her down and she’s blossomed into a true beauty! She loves people but isn’t a fan of cats or other dogs. She likes riding in the car and is housetrained. She loves to chew on toys and really enjoys puzzle games where she has to work for a treat. Petunia extends a paw of thanks to Dolli Dura for her donation towards the Petsburgh Press!

Gizmo Gizmo is quite content with the simple pleasures of life. Tasty treats, a cozy bed and a bowlful of food are all it takes to make his day! Gizmo is an older fellow and would prefer an adult-only home without any another canine residents. P.S. Gizmo is a Red Collar Pet! Members of Animal Friends’ Red Collar Society know that adult pets can be the best, most experienced companions. Visit our Red Collar Page on ThinkingOutsideTheCage. org to learn more. Gizmo would like to thank Selma Kowalski for her generous donation in honor of her dog Chiffon.

4

NoiR Noir is one handsome, intelligent guy! He’s a quick learner and will readily sit or offer his paw in exchange for a tasty reward. He’s also very well behaved in the car – on a recent outing to North Park, he sat quietly and was extremely observant. Noir is very social, but can be somewhat excitable. For that reason, he would be most suited to live in a family with children older than 12 and no cats. Noir thanks Dr. Subhash Marwaha and Dr. Hedwig Marwaha for their donation in memory of Willie Marwaha.

RiGGs Riggs has looks and personality for days! This smart boy will nicely sit, lie down, and shake hands and gently accepts tasty rewards in return. Riggs needs time to adjust to unfamiliar situations and would do best in a low-key, adult-only home with a family who will help him become comfortable in his new surroundings. Someone believes in Riggs so much that they have sponsored his adoption.

Animal Friends’ Canine Socials provide indoor exercise and playtime, turning bored dogs into happy, tired dogs!

Victoria This sweet girl is the true definition of a wigglebutt! Victoria is very friendly and enthusiastically greets everyone with a wagging tail. She has learned to nicely sit upon request and has developed into a well-behaved passenger in the car. This social girl would do well in a home with children of any age but would rather not live with cats or dogs. Victoria is longing to become the queen of your heart! Victoria thanks Judy Stebler for her donation in honor of Rocky, Rambo, Luke and Hunter 1 and Hunter 2.

RoseMary This gentle girl will charm you with her soft brown eyes and sweet personality. Rosemary is a cooperative little hound and is easy to please. She’ll happily accompany you on leisurely walks or contentedly play with her favorite stuffed toys. Rosemary can be timid when meeting new people and doesn’t enjoy excessive handling, so she’d be most comfortable in a home with children older than 10 where she is the only dog. Rosemary sends licks and kisses to Paulette Godla for her donation. Thank you!

MuLLeT

MeMPHis

This pup is a very gentle soul. Mullet does well in playgroups with other dogs, enjoys his daily walks and is always ready for a ride in the car. While Mullet has some hearing loss and a skin condition that will require attention for the rest of his days, he doesn’t let that slow him down one bit! He’s an incredibly friendly guy that greets visitors with a wagging tail and a face that will melt your heart. Mullet thanks Richard and Carol Robie for their donation in honor of Bentley – “Never Forgotten.”

If you’re searching for a fun-loving, outdoorsy companion, Memphis fits the bill! He’s a 4-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound mix who is looking for an active family to call his own. Typical of his breed, Memphis loves to explore and follow his nose. Because of his energetic nature, Memphis would be best suited for a family with children older than six without cats and small dogs. Memphis gives a woof of thanks to Renee Newton for her support of the Petsburgh Press!

Lucy Love This absolutely all-around sweet dog is a love bug. She’s gentle, has soft ears and likes to lean on your legs, which is her way of asking for more affection. We suspect Lucy Love might be deaf, and she has some ongoing medical challenges, but this doesn’t stop her from being the perfect companion dog. Someone loves Lucy Love so much that her adoption donation has been sponsored! She is truly priceless.

JosePHine This sweet lady loves toys, walks and other big dogs. Her golden eyes and perky smile will win you over. She startles easily with unexpected noise and movements, but once she finds a forever friend she can trust, she will be much more comfortable. The ideal home for Josephine would be with respectful kids over the age of 10 and no cats. Josephine must live in a home with another large dog to help her acclimate to her new surroundings.

Aphrodite is a rabbit who knows what she wants. She has a dynamic personality and can be a little strongwilled at times, but we wouldn’t want her any other way. Our volunteers report she likes spending time with them and will ask for attention. She is a confident bun who is looking for a home that will give her a space to call her own! Aphrodite sends thank you thumps to Carole Hanlin, who gave in “appreciation of blessings received.” Thank you Carole!

This bonded pair of buns must find a forever home together. Spinner, the smaller of the pair, can be a little shy but finds strength when he’s with his friend Poseidon. This pair lived with a family for a while, but found that the family was just a bit too active for them. We think this pair would enjoy a quiet, laid-back home to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Helvetica is a social rabbit and loves spending time in our weekly BunRuns to meet and greet her adoring public. Our volunteers report she loves spending time with them and enjoys being petted. Helvetica came to us after being found running loose in a Pittsburgh neighborhood. We’re not sure who would ever let this sweet girl go but we’re sure she’d make a wonderful fit in your family! Come visit her today!

Playgroups Pave the Road to Forever Homes

yards. But don’t think when the snow starts falling playgroup stops! Playgroups move to our large, indoor Outreach Center during inclement weather.

“…did great and quickly graduated to offleash, full-on play! She had a blast!” “A bit timid coming into group but opened up nicely and started running/playing.” “She was more relaxed this time and engaged in more play.” These are just some of the observations our Dog Behavior Team members make about shelter dogs in our weekly playgroups. Playgroups here at Animal Friends are just one of the many ways our dogs get out of their kennels for some much needed exercise and socialization. Well-exercised dogs make tired dogs and tired dogs are happy dogs. Playgroups are supervised by our Dog Behavior Team and Behavior staff members to make sure all dogs play nicely. Staff and volunteers keep track of which dogs are special playmates and ensure those dogs get a little extra time together. In the summer, the dogs enjoy running in our fenced-in, grass play

adopters need to know. Playgroup success stories are numerous and varied. There are many dogs that become social butterflies in playgroup when they were previously shutdown and depressed. One particular dog, Champ, is a great

Playgroup allows staff and volunteers to evaluate the ways dogs react in social situations. They also assess the ways dogs play with other dogs – which is an important piece of information that

example of why playgroup is so important. Champ came to Animal Friends in November 2014 as a stray. He spent nearly five months here, waiting for his forever home. During that time, Champ’s mental health deteriorated and his stress levels increased. He was reactive to other dogs as he came in and out of his kennel and as the days passed, he became more and more frustrated. We had to do something and playgroup was the answer. Champ was a totally different dog in play group! He turned into a Playgroup Ambassador, a dog that would help to bring other dogs into playgroup, bringing out the best in each and every dog he met. Champ thrived in playgroup and eventually found his forever home in April of this year. It might seem like all fun and games (it is for the pups!) but playgroups are so much more here at Animal Friends. Success stories, like Champ’s, prove that play is an integral part of a dog’s life and when used in a shelter setting, can truly save lives. Special thanks to volunteer Brian Johanson and Dog Behavior Team member Rose Ravasio for taking photos of our dog playgroups!

Solar Ithica Ithaca’s about eight-months old, which makes her the prime age for playing! She’s highly energetic and loves to play with all sorts of toys, sometimes at the expense of her condo mates! Ithaca’s little paws sometimes wander outside of her cage, playing with anything that comes her way. She loves getting her head rubbed and enjoys stretching out and relaxing, and would love to share her kitten energy with you. Ithaca thanks Evelyn Romoff for her donation in honor of Stefania Romoff! They’re both the cat’s meow!

TanGo It’s hard to put into words what an extraordinary cat Tango is. This 10-month-old kitty is gregarious and loves nothing more than to have a lap to cuddle in and someone to play with. Tango has some special needs and is looking for that extra special someone who will be able to provide a loving home for him. Ask an Adoption Counselor about Tango today!

Brighten your home with this ray of sunshine! This gentleman is playful on his own terms. He might need some encouragement to play with you and his toys but after he’s done, he’s more than happy to relax on his own on a sunny windowsill. Solar has FIV, and an Animal Friends Adoption Counselor would be glad to discuss with you what that means for Solar. One thing it does mean is that Solar needs to be the only cat in the home or he can live with other FIV+ cats. Consider Solar as the next addition to your family!

ZeNith Zenith is an active, friendly cat who enjoys being the center of attention. She’ll spread herself out on the floor and beckon for you to pet her. She also gets quite comfortable in a lap. Zenith has a keen curiosity for new things and likes to look out the window or sniff out new territory. She’s not a fan of other cats and would prefer a home without them. Someone believes in Zenith so much they have sponsored her adoption!

Mora Mora, a 5-year-old female Tortie, came to Animal Friends through our Humane Investigations department. She hasn’t let her rough past get her down however and is currently making fast friends at our Bethel Park Petco location. She is as sweet as they come and would love to be able to come home with you. Mora thanks Paula Schaukowitch for her donation in memory of Peaches and Whiskers.

At Animal Friends, dogs ages 5 and over, cats ages 6 and over, and bunnies older than 5 years are Red Collar Society pets. Their adoptions come with special benefits!

TiNSeL Enthusiasm – it makes life worth living and dwells in the heart of this beautiful cat. Tinsel is long and lean and moves with a graceful flair. Her curious nature is very entertaining, and at about a year old, she is full of energy. Born to play, Tinsel will impress you with her hunting skills and she loves interactive string and feather toys. Tinsel needs a home where she can sparkle and be free to explore and love. Tinsel sends a big purr of appreciation to Judith Richardson for her donation in memory of her Sweetpea. Thank you!

THNeeD Sweet little Thneed would be the perfect lap kitty for that special someone looking for a low-key companion. Originally brought to Animal Friends during our New Year’s Eve Rescue in 2014, Thneed found Animal Friends to be a little overwhelming. So, we found her a wonderful foster home where she has blossomed. She has a preference for warm laps and cozy cuddling. A calm home environment would help Thneed relax and bond with her new family. Thneed thanks Robert Nagel for his donation in memory of Sarah the cat.

MarGie

PaTsy

Margie is a friendly and playful gal who will rub against your legs as if to claim you for her own. She loves to have her ears and head petted, and she’s quite the talker. She trills happily when greeting volunteers at the shelter, and she would love to meet you and tell you about her day. Her favorite pastime is pawing a wiggly shoestring and she has a weakness for catnip and tasty treats. Her demeanor is quite mellow and she’s looking for a quiet home. Someone believes in Margie so much, they’ve sponsored her adoption fee!

This adorable gal is looking for a loving home where she is doted on and pampered just as she deserves. Patsy has a sassy personality and likes her own space but also loves to snuggle. It can take her a few days to warm up to new people but once she does she’ll be climbing in your lap and rubbing against your leg with loving head-butts. Patsy can spend hours lounging in her plush cat bed, but she also loves to play! Patsy is about 6-years old and would make an excellent companion for someone who works during the day and will give her lots attention when the workday is done.

TaNya

TaCo

If you’re looking for a sweet and gentle cat, Tanya’s your girl. Tanya is about 4-years old and came to Animal Friends as a transfer from another facility. She likes people and is very affectionate, and she also enjoys being petted and combed. A game with the teaser mouse is a welcome break from her solitary life and a chance to stretch her legs. Tanya sends grateful headbutts to Judith Bridickas, who donated in honor of Princess and Cat and One Not Named.

Taco is a young, shy guy. Our volunteers have been working with him and he has come to enjoy spending time with some of his favorite people. He gets along well with other cats and would probably be OK living with a feline sibling or two. Taco has been with us for over a year and it is time for him to find his forever home. Could it be yours? Taco thanks Joyce Waltner-Barmak for her donation in honor of Fluff Waltner. Thank you, Joyce!

Book recommendation by Leah Carlson By Cathy M. Rosenthal (author) and Jessica Warrick (illustrator) ISBN# 978-0-9853752-0-1 Ages 5 and up The Lucky Tale of Two Dogs follows the lives of two dogs. One is lucky; the other is not. While the lucky dog receives

This is a “lucky” tale, though, and an unexpected turn of events leads to a happier life for the previously unlucky dog. Through the dogs’ experiences, readers learn about responsible pet ownership. By Natalie Larocco, Retail Coordinator Animal Friends is pleased to announce our Retail Store has a new bulk treat section! Just as you’re able to do at your favorite grocery store or pet supply shop, you and your pet can fill a bag (or two) with a selection of goodies at by-the-pound and by-theounce prices. The beauty of buying in bulk is that you can purchase as much or as little as you need – whether it’s a teaspoon of catnip, a few ounces of Applewood sticks or a half pound of our Buckeye BonBons. Not only is it fun for you and your pet, it’s easy on your wallet!

What are the advantages of buying in bulk? • Our treat containers are

replenished frequently, so our biscuits are super fresh.

• You can buy as much or as

little as you need, so it’s easy and affordable to try out new products without getting stuck with a lot of something your pet may not like.

• There’s much less wasteful

packaging and you save money because you’re not paying for all of those fancy labels.

How do I get scoopin’? • Stop by Animal Friends’ Retail

Store and explore all of the yummy offerings in our bulk bins.

• Fill a bag with as much or as little as you like.

• Weigh your bags on our easy-touse digital scale.

• Write the item name and weight

on the provided sticker and place on the bag. Use a separate bag for each item. No mixing, please!

• Check out as usual. Our cashiers will take care of the rest!

• All of our bulk offerings are

made right here in the USA with human-grade ingredients. Many of our treats are grain- or glutenfree, which is great for pets with food allergies and all nutritional information is readily available.

Rub-a-Dub-Dub…we need a new tub! Our Retail Grooming Program is in desperate need of a new table! We have half of the cost of the table raised but need a bit of help to raise the rest. Please contact our Retail Store at 412.847.7022 if you would like to help! We could also use... • Nylabone Dura-Chews and DentalChews: These Nylabones are fun to chew but most importantly are safe for our pups to have in their kennels. • Bags or cans of cat and dog food for our Chow Wagon program (any brand, any flavor, smaller bags requested). • Cat litter (clumping or non-clumping) • Hopper Hideaways and Tunnel Havens from BinkyBunny.com for our resident rabbits and BunRuns.

Max and Mamie Animal Friends celebrated another successful Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month in June by sending nearly 100 cats and kittens to their forever homes. All of our residents deserve a home, but there

are some that wait longer than others. Most often, these are our FIV+ (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) cats. FIV is an auto-immune disease that can cause health issues such as skin, eye and teeth problems and is ultimately fatal. However, with proper veterinary care, FIV+ cats can live long, happy lives. Today, we’d like to highlight two FIV+ cats who found their forever home—Onyx (now Max) and Mamie. Mamie was brought to us by a Good Samaritan who found her on his back porch with her four kittens, and her stay at Animal Friends lasted nearly a year. Max came to Animal Friends in the coldest part of January 2015 as a stray. In March, a wonderful couple

16

came in looking for some furry companions for their family and adopted Max and Mamie. Max very much enjoys relaxing on the couch and lying in the window, watching the world go by. Mamie, who was quite shy when she was here at Animal Friends, has begun to come out of her shell at her new home and is doing well with her new parents. Max was always a bit of a mischievous fellow and loves to play. His after-dinner play routine includes his mom throwing a jingle ball with him and he also loves playing with catnip mice. Mamie is a bit more reserved in her play and enjoys feather toys. Mamie and Max’s parents have reported that both kitties are very happy in their new home and have been doing great! As mom Jackie said, “I don’t think we could have picked out two sweeter cats and we are very happy with both Mamie and Max!” Making an FIV+ cat a part of your family is a rewarding experience. Talk to an Animal Friends Adoption Counselor about meeting any one of our wonderful feline residents today!
