LICENCED TO KILL! Manchester University researchers are granted licences to maim and kill thousands of animals each year - including rats, mice, sheep, rabbits, pigs and hamsters. In 2016 alone, almost 175,000 animals were used.
OVER NEXT FIVE YEARS .. • • • • • •
Thousands of mice developing painful swelling and inflammation from arthritis, strokes and Motor Neuron Disease ‘Easy to handle’ rats crippled by Parkinson’s Disease, confined to cylinders and subjected to schizophrenia Hundreds of sheep given heart failure Cruel wound and blinding research on mice Genetically modified ‘GLOWING’ rats given kidney failure 8,000 mice and hundreds of rats given Inflammatory Bowel Disease and suffering weight loss and diarrhoea
LEGAL BUT NOT RIGHT!
LICENCED TO SUFFER! “The primary humane end point will be when animals show extreme weakness in both hind limbs, defined as the inability to bend.” Blinding cruelty... they just can’t see it Mice at Manchester are deliberately and routinely blinded, forced to swim water mazes, and have food and water restricted. Some will have brain electrodes planted onto their heads and substances injected into their eyes. Yet MORE mice with cancer! 30,000 mice are used annually at the university’s own ‘Cancer Research UK Institute’. The animals are subjected to painful tumours. Rats are also used. They undergo traumatic surgery to remove bone marrows and create huge tumours in their bodies.
“...it is possible the animals will be affected quite badly, for example showing problems with movement and eventual paralysis.”
Grotesque harm Manchester uses GM ‘glowing’ rats. Their kidneys are injured and arteries injected with cells which carries a risk of “substantial blood loss”. Mice undergo highly invasive surgery and acute renal failure. Deliberate wounds The ‘models of injury’ at Manchester are usually mice. Painful injuries are inflicted, including large back wounds. Sometimes the wounds are applied with bacteria. Rats are also used and a 10% mortality is hailed as a ‘success’.
