ell, it seems that summer is quietly coming to a close, and I find myself wondering where the time went. Call me crazy, but I actually welcome the end of summer because it means a whole new world is about to descend upon us; fall is perhaps my favorite season and a time I find I can get out and enjoy New England with the pups. I love to bring the dogs along with me for just about everything, which is not always possible in the summer heat.
A wonderful woman I know, named Bonnie, recently asked friends on facebook to list what’s left on their summer to do list. I quickly posted, camping on Horseneck Beach. I love camping in my 10ft vintage Shasta in late summer/early fall. The water is warm(ish), the temperature is comfortable for my dogs (the campground is dog friendly!) and the evenings are perfect for sitting around a campfire with friends. Another item on my list is to take advantage of the weather and hit some of the local pet friendly restaurants. I thought readers might have the same idea, so I put together a little Whine & Dine in Providence restaurant guide on page 26. For the first time, I am seeing restaurants truly catering to dogs, not just by allowing them, but by encouraging them with doggie menus and special treats! If you hit any of the guide suggestions, please send me a letter and let me know how it was! This issue is also one of my most touching and inspiring with some amazing stories about loss, love and the power of the human/animal bond. Trust me...you’ll want to grab a tissue when you read the beautiful story about Roxie and Joanne, which chronicles the experience of one woman and one dog’s survival after the greatest loss of their lives. I was also moved and inspired by the hard work of our own Katenna Jones, who has started an organization working to get dogs off their chains by educating the public and raising funds to build fences. Named the Tily fund after the first dog she saved from a life on a chain, you will be touched by the kindness and understanding Katenna shows in “Outside In” on page 8. And lastly, you’ll want to take a moment to check out the oodles of events coming up in the next few months (see page 22). I think we have more going on now than we’ve had all summer. A few notable events that the magazine is sponsoring are the RISPCA memorial dog walk, Cat’s Alive dinner and auction for PawsWatch, East Greenwhich Animal Protection League’s Hound Hike, Bahk in the Pahk put on by the Southern RI Animal Rescue League, and a Pet Parade on Hope St., organized by Pippas Papers. And while I’m at it, come down and visit the Animal Print for a special Yappy Hour hosted by Furry Friends Pet Care and Aspire Restaurant on Sept. 19th. With so much going on, I don’t think I need to tell you to have a great few months...I’m sure you will. Please enjoy the new issue! Stephanie Georgia Editor P.S. A big congratulations to photographer Traer Scott and her husband Jesse Blair who, while I write this, are at the hospital preparing for the birth of their first child! Good Luck!

The USPS Issues A (Forever) Stamp Commemorating Owney The Postal Dog.
Owney, a terrier mix, used to ride the mail trains back in the late 1800s. Apparently work on ye olde postal railway was pretty dangerous back in the day, and the postal workers saw Owney as kind of a guardian angel and mascot. As Owney traveled from post to post, people would attach souvenir tags to his collar (as seen in the stamp’s illustration). Owney eventually collected so many tags that the then Postmaster gifted him a harness to display his treasures. You can learn more about Owney through the National Postal Museum, and his stamp is available at post offices and online.
PooP r
A new and innovative detective-poo agency recently featured in The New York Times, may actually have the answer to kicking unwanted doggy droppings to the curb. Simply put, this service uses powerful DNA technology to find inconsiderate owners who don’t pick up after their dogs when nature calls. According to The Times, approximately two dozen apartment complexes around the country utilize their services. Apartment tenants in these facilities are required to submit a sample of their dog’s saliva, which remains on file and can be used to identify the culprits responsible for those mysterious and offensive piles of poo. So next time you leave home ill-equipped to pick up after your pooch, beware, the poo-police just may be on duty watching you!

Congratulations to Dr. Jane Linden of Providence River Animal Hospital
Dr. Linden will become President of the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association (RIVMA) in January 2012, presiding over RIVMA as it celebrates its 50th Anniversary year. RIVMA seeks to advance veterinary medicine and its relationship to public health and agriculture and to provide timely information and resources to the public. Dr. Linden has not only been a strong member of the Board for three years, but with Reverend Mary Margaret Earl at McAuley House, Dr. Linden established a fund to provide veterinary care to the guests of McAuley who are often low-income, unemployed or without funds to afford care for their beloved pets. A holiday open house at Providence River in 2010 raised $2500 for the inauguration of the fund. Additionally, Dr. Linden and the RIVMA hosted a pet care clinic at McAuley House and gave physical exams, vaccinations and basic care to more than twenty pets in a single morning.

Hi Stephanie, welcome back to little Rhodie and thank’s for the kind words about the magazine. It’s really gratifying to hear from folks who find our magazine useful! Good luck with your work in NYC. Stephanie Georgia Editor Dear Editor, So, personal space are words you hear thrown around an awful lot. “You’re in my personal space,”“Back off, I don’t feel comfortable with you in my personal space,” So why do people not think that dogs also need personal space? It’s a “pet peeve” I have. My dog is a 3 year old, friendly, large breed dog. She is good with most other dogs. My dog has a slight quirk however. Just a short while after we got her, she was attacked head on by a random dog who’s owner just thought the dog ‘wanted to play,’ Forever since my dog has been uncomfortable with approaches that come straight in front of her. Instead, she enjoys approaches from the side, so both dogs can easily circle and sniff whatever they want to sniff. After a short introduction she’s fine with them, plays with them, or then continues doing whatever she had been doing. So I find it severally upsetting when on walks, or in public, people do not seem to care to ask how my dog is with other dogs. Instead, they just loosen the leash and let their dogs shove face-first into my dogs personal space. Just yesterday while at a festival, there was roughly a fifteen foot wide path through the lines of food booths and rides and such, a man who has two bully breed dogs on leash is coming my way, so I politely move to the side, sit my dog, and wait for him to pass. Only he doesn’t. Instead, he makes a beeline for me and my dog. Both of his dogs run up face to face to my dog, who is immediately frightened and nervous. They shove at her from either side, and I yank her out of the way before anything bad can happen. I’m not saying my dog is perfect. But when introducing my dog to another dog I always ask “Is she friendly?” or “Is she calm enough right now to meet my dog?”.I don’t see why some dog owners just assume that your dog wants to meet theirs, or that you want your dog to meet them. Dogs are just like people. They have their own personalities. They like their own type. Some dogs are social butterflies while others are Simon Cowell’s, and all dog owners should respect that. Please ask before approaching a strange dog, in any situation. And if your dog is like mine and doesn’t like getting shoved around, don’t feel like you have to stay quiet. Even if you just snap firmly “My dog doesn’t like other dogs,” it would be better then allowing your dog to get into an uncomfortable situation that could lead to disaster. B Moore Hi B Moore, I’m sorry to hear about your difficulties with some dog owners. As someone with a dog who is not a lover of new dogs himself, I undertand your pain! Not everyone understands that some dogs need extra care, but I find that they often have good intensions. It’s good that you know your dog’s limits but you may have to continue to remind and educate folks as you go...but the next dog owner of a sensitive dog will thank you! Good luck. I
grew up in northern New York State. My first pet I can remember was a dog who lived, gave birth, and died on the end of a chain. She froze to death. So did all of her puppies except for one – the first dog I ever rescued. I found him just a few minutes old and I named him Miracle. The sad irony was that he would grow up only to die on the end of a chain as well. It’s just what you do with dogs in my hometown. Or at least it’s what you did. Lately, things are improving and more and more dogs are becoming house pets, but not all. There is still a long way to go. Then there was Tily – an absolutely wonderful lab-husky mix. His is the typically story. An adorable, fluffy puppy given to the kids during a divorce in an attempt to make them happy. Unfortunately, amidst this major family turmoil, single dad – who never wanted the puppy to begin with – is raising three kids and running a diary farm. Naturally, the puppy never received the training and attention he required and ended up delegated outside. First to the yard, until the jumping and barking for attention got so annoying he was eventually moved across the street near the barn. And there he stayed for eight scorching summers and eight sub-zero winters. Alone and unable to hide from the thunder or pouring rain or driving wind.
Now it’s easy to say – what a bunch of jerks! Why didn’t they just bring the dog inside? The owner must be a monster to leave that poor baby outside like that. He should be arrested, or tied outside to know what it’s like. One could say the same thing about my parents. Or perhaps about your parents? Or someone you love? We can so easily cast judgment without all of the details. We drive past a home with a dog chained outside and think or say horrible things about the owners. We assume they are bad people who are knowingly abusing their dogs. We make flippant comments as we walk by, or even rudely confront the person. But do we ever stop to think, and ask ourselves – why is that dog outside? Is there something I could to educate or help the owner? Tily’s family was joining mine. That single dad was marrying my sister and wedding preparations and family events were underway. But, when I looked at Tily across the street, gazing longingly at all of us, he broke my heart to the point of major family tension. I was torn. There as this amazing dog who was (to me) clearly suffering. Yet, there was this man my sister loved, and who loved her back. How could this be? How could someone who does this to a dog treat my two nieces like his
own kids, with patience and kindness. He was a gentle, loving, compassionate person who truly loved that dog. He was – and still is – one of the best men I’ve ever met.
9
Turns out, with patience and conversation, I discovered the whole family thought there was no other option. Tily was still outside because they truly did not know how to go about bringing the dog inside, or that it was even an option. They were worried about him making a mess, as he had done as a puppy, running away, or dying during neuter surgery. We talked a lot. I shared information and resources, I provided them with feasible, affordable solutions to each issue they raised. First, Tily was taken off the chain and placed onto a body harness and runner. Soon, he was moved near the house where he was on a tie-out with doggy door access to the heated garage. Next, he was neutered. Finally, he was trained on an electronic fence and eventually he wormed his way into the home, and eventually into their bed! I was so pleased to have been able to help, and I learned so much about myself and about others. Coincidentally, a friend of mine was posting videos on Facebook of dogs she was helping through her work with Fences for Fidos in Washington state. Thus, an idea was born. With some research and conversations with the incredible folks at Coalition to Unchain Dogs, I got the information needed to start my own group. The Tily Fund is a fledgling group of Rhode Island dog loving volunteers. We recently had a very successful yard sale and raised enough money to apply for our non-profit status. We are currently networking with area dog professionals, and collecting dog houses. We are creating a website, and progress is taking shape.

Our overall goals are to educate owners, improve the lives of chained dogs in Rhode Island, and ultimately get them off their chains altogether. The Tily Fund is a non-judgmental group committed to treating all the dog owners we encounter with respect and kindness. Period. Dogs will suffer in the end if our reputation in the community becomes compromised, or if we engage in unintentionally inappropriate or counter-productive words or actions. If you think you might be interested in joining the Tily Fund, or helping out in some way, please contact me at Katenna@gmail.com for more information. And please remember – withhold judgment until you know more. A saying a good friend of mine once shared is: no matter how flat you make a pancake, there are still always two sides.

Joanne and Roxie Written by Joelle Spinelli
A Story of Grief, Love, And The Re-Birth Of Spirit
A
t 9:30 pm on a cool, ordinary September night in 2009, Josyln Moynagh kissed her mother goodbye and headed out with friends for the night. At 1:30 am her father was awoken to flashes of light coming in through their bedroom window, and her mother, Joanne Robidoux, saw a policeman standing in their walkway. Hoping that her daughter had been arrested, she ran outside only to be met with words that she describes as marking “the beginning of the end of my life,” which were, “Your daughter is at Rhode Island Hospital, and you need
to go there immediately.” Joslyn died at 6:20 in the morning; the exact same time at which she was born. Instantly, Joanne’s present existence and every hope for the future were shattered. Unless you have survived the unexpected death of an immediate family member, it is impossible to understand the intense, crippling, paralyzing pain of such a loss. In a single moment, one’s entire world, and one’s life as they know it, is destroyed, forever; the heartbreak one carries is as permanent as death itself. When it is a mother losing her child, I can not begin to fathom the immeasurable
magnification of that pain. While nothing can alleviate nor lesson the utter decimation of one’s heart, sometimes, solace and comfort can be tentatively discovered. In Joanne’s period of most intense pain and palpable sense of loss, something subtly extraordinary began to take place; Joanne’s solace was found in Roxie, the little black pug she had recently given to Josyln. And while, due to her own all encompassing grief, Joanne did not immediately realize the depth of Roxie’s suffering, Roxie also found solace in Joanne. A devastated mother’s life was saved by a dog; and a devastated dog’s life was saved by a mother, and through their mutual devotion to and healing of one another…. countless animals’ lives have been saved and bettered. In the first weeks and months following her daughter’s death, Joanne’s I would lie there, holding depression was near her tail at night, just to know fatal. In she was there. her words, “There were days I did not think I could live through.” Her grief manifested itself not only spiritually, but physically as well. She was lethargic, completely unable to move at times; she was not eating; her blood pressure was skyrocketing; and sleep was impossible. During one of these seemingly endless sleepless nights, Joanne heard the sound of nails gently scratching on wood. When she went to investigate the sound, she saw Roxie pawing at the closed door of Josyln’s bedroom, trying to open the door unto the past and back into the loving, sleepy embrace of her person. At the sight of this small, newly frail, animal showing such plaintive longing in one simple gesture, a sudden realization came flooding over Joanne; Roxie is suffering too, just as I am. She also then realized, as she scooped Roxie into her arms and carried her into her own bedroom, that Roxie’s emotional pain was taking a physical toll on her as well; she had lost weight, her fur was thinning and falling out in patches, and what was left was lackluster and dull. Overcome with a uniquely powerful brand of love, that which is born from a shared agony, Joanne cradled Roxie in her arms throughout the night, and felt for the first time… relief. On this night was also born the beginning of a new, albeit one which carries an immutable and constant heartache, way to survive and live. Joanne and Roxie found within each other a reason to forge onward through blinding pain and darkness, into small, ever increasing, precious moments of consolation and pin-pricks of light. They began walking together, and allowing the feat of simply moving forward, one foot and one paw at a time, to lend momentum to their lives and, ultimately, their healing.

Joanne and Roxie Continued from page 11.
Since the first night Joanne carried Roxie into her bedroom, neither of them spent another night alone. Joanne says that the presence of that small, warm, furry body was the only real comfort she had during the desolate night. She says “I would lie there, holding her tail at night, just to know she was there.” Joanne’s blood pressure began to return to normal, her energy slowly returning, and her emotional and spiritual evisceration found moments of assuagement. Roxie began putting back on weight, her fur slowly re-growing and acquiring its old sheen, and her tail found its rise and wag again. The times at which the depths of Joanne’s sorrow would plummet back into the abysmal were those which allowed for nothing else but undistracted thought: night time, and driving. Her 30 minute, there and back, commute to work was undiluted agony. Her only thoughts were those of Joslyn. In such quiet moments the loss becomes unbearable, the horror of the permanence is stabbing, and the pain of flooding memories feels like an acid bath. There were times, she says, in which she was forced to pull over because she could not see through her tears, and could not control her sobbing. She would find herself thinking “If only Roxie were here, and I could rest my hand on her body and find comfort in her breathing, like I do at night.” Joanne is the president of Goldmark Federal Credit Union in Attleboro, MA, and she took a chance, called the Board of Directors, and asked “May I bring Roxie into work with me?” Their answer was “Of course.” The effect of Roxie’s presence was not only transformational upon Joanne’s commute, but on the entire Credit

Union. Everyone, members and staff, were charmed by this amazing little animal. Even the Assistant Manager, Elsa, who readily admits to having no desire for pets of her own, fell in love with Roxie. Soon, “Pet Fridays” were implemented and staff began bringing in their pets as well. Members love coming in to be greeted by the full body wagging of Roxie, Lola, Vivian and Buddy. Members are also more than welcome to have their friendly dogs accompany them into the Credit Union. The sometimes stressful, and usually impersonal, task of dealing with one’s finances has been infused with mirth, joy, and fur. Goldmark began having charity events and hosting adoption centers on their premises as well. When “Little Orphan Annie,” a poodle mix was found abandoned on the highway, moldy, matted, blind with eye infections and too afraid to move, the Credit Union held a Meet-n-Greet, with Annie as the guest of honor, and raised $1,400 toward her care. They were also the drop off center for supplies to aid the victims of the tornado in Springfield, Mass., and they collected hundreds of pounds of dog and cat food, cleaning supplies, pet beds, toys, leashes and collars. those things too, but she also gave an incredibly healing gift that only a dog can give; the gift of liberating her grief. Roxie did not Continued from page 13. judge the fashion in which Joanne grieved; she did not compare nor quantify Joanne’s grief with her own. She placed no time frames, expectations, nor limitations; …she simply allowed. Human beings, for as much as they wish to help, and strive to allay the pain of their loved ones, are simply not capable of completely removing themselves from the deeply personal experiences of others. Roxie, while being present, aware, and connected to Joanne and her bereavement, never insinuated her own sadness into Joanne’s; she purely and with out a sense of self let it ride along side Joanne’s, like a gentle commiserating caress. Their mutual love for, and healing of, one another has offered love and healing to so many other lives as well. The tragedy of Joslyn’s death and the excruciation of her absence are not lessened, they never can be; but tentative solace and comfort can be found in that knowledge. 15 LAST CHANCE to nominate the 2011
“DOG”MOTHER OF THE YEAR! Nominate Her For Dog Mom Of The Year!
We all know someone who has given of themselves, their time (and of their wallets) to help a dog in need. Let us now give them a huge resounding Thank You! Attention!! Calling all fantastic dog moms!! Mother’s Day has come and gone, but The Animal Print and our sponsors don’t want to leave dog moms out in the doghouse! We all know someone with children who are...ur, more furry and low to the ground that deserve some recognition. So here is your chance to let that special doggy mother in your life know just how appreciated she is:
Here’s how to win!
Write a short and to the point endorsement (500 words or less) about the woman you would like to nominate as The Animal Print’s 3rd Annual Dog Mom of the Year. Make sure you tell us exactly why you believe this doggy mother is so extraordinary and wonderful. The entries will be judged by a panel of professionals in the pet care field.
TIPS on What to Write:
Perhaps you know a lady who has rescued an unwanted doggy child from the pound or cold streets? Giving them a life and love that others who came before had denied them, and giving them that second chance stray animals so desperately need and deserve. Or a woman who has taken in a special needs dog, whether they suffered medical problems or behavioral challenges, sacrificing time and money to selflessly help a very special dog in need. Maybe you have a wonderful dog mom in your life who comes home after a hard day at work and doesn’t plop down on the sofa to watch TV and drink beer… but instead takes multiple eager – to – play pooches for a long romp in the park and cooks them homemade meals to boot. The winning Dog Mom will recieve oodles of gifts, pampering and appear in the next issue of the Animal Print along with the winning entry. So C’mon folks! Get out that pen and paper and give the incredible doggy mom YOU know a chance to be treated like the star she is.
Please email your nominations to:
The Animal Print Magazine submissions@theanimalprint.com Be sure to include both your nominee’s name, her dog’s name, your name and relation to nominee, address, phone number and email.
Deadline Is August 31, 2011

Canine Compulsive Behavior
A Study At Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine
I
can remember the first case of canine compulsive behavior that I observed as a fledging behaviorist at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine’s Animal Behavior Clinic a decade ago. My job then was to escort owners and their pets into an exam room and ask them why they had come to see us. This one simple question would usually result in the owner sharing a flurry of details about the behavioral problem and I would have to condense the owner’s account when I reported it to the behaviorist in charge, who would enter the room after a few minutes. My first case of canine compulsive behavior was a different story though. As I sat down with this owner and exchanged introductions, her German Shepherd began slowly walking in circles around her chair. Now I’d seen dogs who spin around in a circle or two when they are excited, but this was different from anything I had ever seen. The dog was totally expressionless and did not seem connected to his surroundings as he circled and circled and circled. I watched in silence and waited to see if he would stop. Minutes ticked by while the dog trudged around and around his owner’s chair. I noticed a tear slide down the owner’s face. “I see why you have come” I finally managed to say. “He...just…never...stops” came her sad reply. It is cases like this that have led my colleagues to consider whether our four-legged friends can really have a doggy form of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)? Of course since we can’t ask dogs if they have obsessive thoughts, no one really

knows for sure whether they do, however “compulsive” seems adequate to describe many of the canine patients that have passed through our doors over the past 20 years. Many owners have told me “My dog seems compelled to spin,” and “I can’t interrupt him no matter how hard I try”. Sometimes these dogs whine as they spin which makes it seem as if they don’t want to be spinning, but they can’t stop themselves. Unfortunately the consequences of these severe cases can include injury to the tail (sometimes severe enough to warrant amputation), superficial lacerations from banging into walls/furniture and sadly, euthanasia. Some owners feel that it is more humane to have their dogs put to sleep because the quality of their life is so compromised by the repetitive behavior. We’ve also had dogs come in with their tails already amputated, not because the tail was injured beyond repair, but rather, the tail was amputated as an attempt to fix the problem. Unfortunately amputating the tail doesn’t work because the source of the problem is at the level of the brain. Spinning isn’t the only repetitive behavior that we see. Some dogs get “obsessed” with stationary or moving lights, shadows and reflections. They constantly look around for a shadow and if they spot one they may stare at it, pounce at it, or hover over it for hours on end. Another type of compulsive behavior is known as “blanket sucking”. Dogs with compulsive “blanket sucking” suck on blankets, bedding, toys or any soft fabric for long periods of time each day. Continued On Page 21

Canine Compulsive Behavior
Continued From Page 16 Though not all cases involving repetitive behavior are caused by a canine version of OCD, many of the cases we see have similarities to the human condition. For instance, like afflicted humans, canine compulsive behavior tends to develop during young adulthood. Another parallel is that our patients often show a therapeutic response to the same pharmacological strategies used to treat afflicted humans. Working at a behavior clinic with a large volume of clients allows one to see patterns in the breeds of dogs that show repetitive behaviors. Many of our tail chasers/spinners are Bull Terriers or German Shepherds. Many of our light/shadow chasers are Border Collies and many Doberman Pinschers present with blanket sucking or lick granulomas. Since genetics are likely to be involved when a condition is common to a certain breed, a series of studies aimed at determining the genetics involved was begun here at Tufts Animal Behavior Clinic. In 1995 we began storing DNA samples from dogs with repetitive behaviors while we waited for the genetic technology to ripen. Recently our banking of DNA samples paid off. We discovered that blanket/flank sucking Doberman Pinschers had a region of genetic coding on chromosome 7 that was different from Doberman Pinchers that didn’t show these repetitive behaviors. This finding represents the first genetic locus identified for any animal compulsive disorder and has lead human researchers to examine this gene locus in humans suffering from OCD. Another piece of evidence in favor of the theory that dogs can have OCD is that the genetic area of interest that we found in Doberman Pinchers is also associated with the function of a brain chemical that is the target of some human (and canine) pharmacological treatments of OCD. The next step in our research endeavor is to look at alternate breeds with repetitive behaviors and compare their genetic information to the genetic results we found in Doberman Pinchers. The breeds we are concentrating on now are tail-chasing or Continued On Page 25

spinning German Shepherds, light/shadow-chasing Border Collies and Doberman Pinschers who lick their paws. In this effort we need your help. If you know of any dogs that might qualify for this study, please have the owners contact me at 508-887-4802 or via email at nicole.cottam@tufts.edu. We hope that our research will shed light on the cause of compulsive behavior and direct us toward new treatments so that we can help those dogs who are severely affected. We also hope that it is possible to invent a test that could tell us which dogs have the potential to pass this affliction along to their offspring. We could then avoid producing dogs that suffer from severe forms of this debilitating condition. In the meantime we do the best we can treating the severe cases we see with behavior modification techniques and pharmacological strategies. Fortunately the German Shepherd mentioned earlier did improve with treatment. The owner stayed in touch with our clinic for about 6 months after this first appointment and reported that while his circling didn’t totally disappear, the amount of time he spent circling decreased and when he did spin he became easier to interrupt with a verbal command. She was happy to see her dog spending more time engaged in doggy endeavors and less time lost in his world of endless spinning. Nicole Cottam, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University in 1998 in Behavioral Neuroscience and then spent two years as a research assistant at Boston University studying the biochemistry and anatomy of brain reward systems. In 2001 she obtained a Master’s Degree from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine’s Center for Animals and Public Policy. For the past 10 years she has served as Behavior Service Coordinator at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine’s Animal Behavior Clinic. She is also involved in clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy of treatments for canine and feline behavior problems. She lives in MA with one husband, two rescued Pomeranians and two cats.

Nick-A-Nees was voted the #1 Top Dog Bar for a reason and no
Whine & Dine guide would be complete without including this Providence watering hole. Sit inside, sit outside, old folks, young folks, no pretense, just a place to get a drink and relax. Often refered to as the dog bar because your dog can come in and walk around without a getting a second look. People bring board games, shoot pool/shuffleboard, hang on the porch, let their dogs roam and visit with the crowd.Oh, and did we mention the jukebox? Best in town! We also love that they host some great events during the year to help raise funds for homeless pets in the area and you can even book them for a daytime dog party! Last year I attended a Quinceanera for a 15 year old dog...yes a Quinceanera! Nick-A-Nees 75 South St Providence, RI (401) 861-7290

Nick’s On Broadway is one of those rare finds that all dog loving
foodies must try! This modern dinner offers some of the most delectable dishes you’ll ever taste. Chef Derek Wagner will knock your socks off with such dishes as vanilla-battered French toast with warm fruit compote and rosemary ham (brunch), barbecue pulled-pork sandwich with cheddar and caramelized onion, as well as rare-seared tuna with mashed parsnippotatoes and sage jus. ADOPT ME!
PARL – 34 Elbow St • Providence, RI • 401.421.1399 • reception-r@parl.org
KITTENS! These lovely little faces are just a sample of the many kittens PARL has throughout the summer! There is typically a mix of males & females coming in all colors & markings but they all have one thing in common… they are all ready to give you a lifetime of love! If it’s a youngster that you are looking for then come and visit us.
Baloo is a BIG boy! Weighing in at almost 18 lbs he could probably stand to lose a bit but will always be a big cat—that’s just the way he’s built! Baloo tends to be a little bit nervous in his cage, but is a complete sweetheart who purrs like a motor the minute you touch him. He is 6 years old and would be a great fit for pretty much any type of family!
Rusty is a 3 year old Labrador Retriever Mix. He is a very energetic and confident dog. He loves being active and running with people. He is a smart dog but can also be stubborn at times. He hasn’t had a lot of socializing with other dogs, but is extremely dominant when he does meet them. He is looking for an active forever home!
Ruby is a 5 year old Pit-bull/Chow Chow Mix. She is a fun loving little lady who is interested in her surroundings. She can be a bit vocal and rambunctious when playing. She does enjoy playing but also likes to have her quiet time. She would do best with children ages 10 and up who have dog experience and know when she needs her space.
RISPCA – 186 Amaral Street • Riverside, RI • 401.438.8150 • info@rispca.com
Guiness is a 4 year old black lab mix. His previous owners said that he was a wonderful dog, but that he would do better in a home without young kids. He very friendly and energetic. He isn’t reactive to any animals at the shelter including cats but would probably do best with another dog his size. He would benefit from some basic training.
Izzy is a three year old Husky, Shepherd, Labrador mix. He is a little bit shy, but does warm up. He has lived with another dog, but does not get along with cats. An adult home would be best for him!
Stella is a 1 year old green iguana. She is currently fairly handleable, but will need to have consistent, gentle handling to remain that way. Iguanas will get large (up to 6 feet) and require large enclosures with room to climb and bask, high temperatures, expensive lighting setups and diets rich in fresh produce (they are floravores).
Riley was surrendered as a Red Eared Slider, but he appears very different from typical RES, so we are waiting for a final identification. If he is in fact a RES, we will have to follow RI law and adopt him to Non-RI residents. If he is not a RES, adoption would be open to any qualified applicant.
East Greenwich Animal Protection League – RI • 401.732.8223 • egapl@care2.com
Corned Beef is a 6 mth old grey male. He is a beautiful, sweet guy who loves to be held and he has a wonderful, soft coat that just shines. He enjoys playing with just about anything. Once he is in your arms he becomes a baby and will just relax and purr away. He gets along with other cats.
Murphy is a 5 year old DSH neutered white cat with Tiger patches. A good companion as he is easy to be with. He is a super lovebug. He enjoys being petted and rubbed. Feline Leukemia and Aids negative; up to date on shots. No Dogs.
Sadie is a 1 yr old Maine Coon mix who loves attention. She just adores being petted and playing with toys. She will talk to you if you ignore her and demand you come over to pet her. Sadie is a lovebug. She is a true beauty. She is up to date on her shots and has been fixed. Felv/FIV negative.
Sookie is a 1 year old spayed torti with white very unusual markings. She is very loving and gentle. As soon as you start to pet her she will flop over on her back and put her paws out. She loves being talked to and giving headbutts. She has a winning personality. Sookie will purr and chirr so you will continue petting her.

Betty Sue is sweet and affectionate. She was brought to our shelter by an agency that had helped rescue her from a bad situation. She is a little nervous but loves to be around people. She just wants hugs and pets and kisses. Betty Sue came to us very malnourished and with pressure sores on her wrists.
Big Mamma is a 4 year old Pit Bull Terrier Mix who would make a great addition to any family. She gets along with children of all ages and most dogs, she will avoid conflict whenever possible. She has spent most of her time outdoors but seems to be housebroken while in her kennel throughout the night here.
Puddy is shy but gentle. She is indoor only and lived with children of all ages. She is friendly with the kids, but afraid of a lot of loud noises and sudden movements, so might enjoy a quieter home. She likes to play with things she finds on the floor and have her back end scratched. She is 7 years old.
Fancy arrived with her brother Pig because her family was moving. She is a sweet girl who does well with other cats and children of all ages. She likes to be pet on her back and face and her favorite toy is a laser pointer. She is 3 yrs old. Arrived:6/7/11

Oreo is an America’s favorite Kitty! Sweet and savory like the cookie, Oreo is sure to win you over! He would do well in a home with kids, other cats and probably a dog.
Miss Mitchie will find a niche in your heart! Shes a mere slip of a thing but full of life and charm. She warms up quickly to people and will be a great companion. Watch out, her antics and winning ways may grab you.
Lucky will be your pair of pocket aces, when the chips are down. He’s a leaner, and loves to come in close for attention and a big ol’ smooch. Lucky would do best in a home with older children and no other pets. Come by and see our 150lb behemoth today.
Brownie Love is a sweet 7 year old Pug mix. She is hyper for her age and a little bit mouthy so we are looking for an adult only home for our special girl. She gets along with other dogs very well.

birdology and birdwatch I didn’t buy the books at a birdstore, nor borrow them from a library. They were gifts. One was a recent bestseller, the other a bygone story with photos found at the local branch. They added to the pleasures I have enjoyed in the summer world of nests and songs, glimpses and flashes among the sweet perfumes of July and amid the melancholy migratory mood of August: all the arts, from poetry to photography. Sy Montgomery--she’s a woman--writes, produces scripts for documentaries, comments on radio stations, and raises chickens, (her Ladies) with her husband and her border collie pet and pal. But her current oeuvre called “Birdology” mixes research, history, legend, philosophy, anecdotes, travel notes, and wild enthusiasm for birds, birds, birds. From hens to hawks and hummingbirds, from pigeons and doves to crows, cassowaries, parrots, and even extinct birds all the way through to the dinosaurs from which they all have evolved. She writes as well as Will Shakespeare! You can taste each word, perfectly chosen, except for the regrettable fact that she makes no distinction between “like” and “as,” which disturbs the English teacher in me and shows her age, more youthful than mine, since such quibbles have vanished into the void! Sy has held newborn hummingbirds in her hand, has pursued the pathways of the giant and mysterious cassowary, has laughed and wept at the fate of her feathered friends, and raves about the special genius of the bird world, which both resembles and also vastly differs from, the human realm. Now, the other book I wanted to salute, the one I thank my wife for bringing home from the Narragansett Pier Free Library, is “Swan Watch” --also
33 {Wandering Tails} by Mike Fink written by a famous scriptwriter, Budd Schulberg--you know, On the Waterfront, Face in the Crowd, the stuff they show on TCM--with snapshots by his wife Geraldine Brooks, the actress on screen and television. It’s about a pair of swans that combine wildness with pet quality friendship on the lawn of their lake-front cottage. The first season, they hatched 7 cygnets, and all of them survived. It was like a fairy-tale or ancient Irish myth. And the fierce and territorial swans were tamed through sheer good will and artistic instinct. But the second summer, all the painstakingly protected hatchlings were killed, one by one, through the savage attacks of a species of gull who arouse, not the detached poise of a scientific observer, but the hatred of Budd and of Gerry! The volume, though, lives on. Now, we know that swans are no longer symbols of aristocratic nobility at our shorelines. No, they are neither pet quality nor do they fall into the category of vulnerable and decorative natural creatures of our region. They are generally labeled, and libelled, as pests! But not for Budd and Gerry! They totally love ‘em and long for their return. Well, the fate of both paperbacks and hardcovers, even of the shelves in public places, free or commercial, is very much in doubt, and that is part of the reason I wanted to share the delight of this double dose of bird books of summer 2011. Also to thank the guest, Miss Sue, who brought the giftwrapped “Birdology” and my lady, who picked and packed the “Swan Watch”. Birds are great in the garden, either at your feeder or your flowers, planted or just free. Birds keep you company as you stroll the strands at the surf. Birds are also wondrous on the pages of books, either with the specific smell of the library or the whiff of the bygone Border’s chain. Books are part of summertime, and I share with these authors a deep interest in the feathered flocks.
