Dog Walking Could Be Key To Ensuring Activity In Later Life A new study has shown that regularly walking a dog boosts levels of physical activity in older people, especially during the winter. Published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, the study used data from the EPIC Norfolk cohort study, which is tracking the health and wellbeing of thousands of residents of the English county of Norfolk. More than 3000 older adults participating in the study were asked if they owned a dog and if they walked one. They also wore an accelerometer, a small electronic device that constantly measured their physical activity level over a seven-day period. As bad weather and short days are known to be one of the biggest barriers to staying active outdoors, the researchers linked this data to the weather conditions experienced and sunrise and sunset times on each day of the study. Researchers found that owning or walking a dog was one of the most effective ways to beat the usual decline in later-life activity, even combatting the effects of bad weather. Dog owners were sedentary for 30 minutes less per day, on average.

Craig Sauvé, a member of Mayor Valérie Plante’s newly appointed executive committee, spoke about Montreal’s pit bull ban, saying the new administration plans to repeal-and-replace the bylaw. The current bylaw, passed by the Coderre administration last September, makes it illegal to adopt a pit bull type dog. Montrealers who already own a pit bull are currently required to get a permit for their pet, and keep their canine in a muzzle when in public. Pitbull-owners caught outside without a permit can face a $750 fine and have their pet taken away. Denigrated by Sauvé, a new bill will be introduced that will be created in consultation with dog owners and groups like the Montreal SPCA. Sauvé stated, “Essentially, Montreal is going to mirror what Calgary has done when it comes to regulating animals.” In Calgary, dogs of all breeds need to have a City of Calgary licence once they’re over three months old. Dogs are expected to be leashed at all times (save for designated off-leash areas) and canines are barred from entering certain areas, like playgrounds.

The Old Man and the Cat

ils Uddenberg is a retired, septuagenarian psychiatrist who took in a feral cat he and his wife simply called "Kitty." He wrote and published a "love story" which I ordered at "Books on the Square" and just finished reading, all 164 pages, with its rather endearing and reassuring grey and white illustrations along the way. Now, I have become quite an appreciative collector of cat bios: and I write about them with pleasure, even though I am on the side of the birds, my feathered friends, not their feline foes. What's special about this charming little tome is, that the tale is Swedish, and the words are translated by Henning Koch and the volume is designed by Anna Gorovoy. And, since I have of late become interested in Sweden with hopes of a visit to all the places mentioned in the text, I was looking for hints about what makes "Kitty" a particularly Swedish, Scandinavian, Stockholm stray, with some of the characteristics of all things "Viking." It's a great journey throughout the lazy hours of a long summer's day to study the thoughts, observations, and intimate details of every paragraph.

Now, to start with, the little female kitten adopts the "old man," who proceeds to move cautiously toward inviting it indoors and getting his entire family involved in the taming and domestication of this wild thing. They are a travelling clan and have to share in the responsibilities of care when they are away. So, you get to know his daughter, his son-in-law, his grandson, and his research among his books to discover the evolutionary aspects of his romantic friendship with this independent, but also dependent, fellow creature. This is not only a private journal, but a philosophical extended essay in the avowed style of the master journal-keeper, Michel de Montaigne. It will make you respect feral mouse-hunters and vole-killers, but also admire the inspiration that an animal can provide in return for your dedication. What makes a Swedish cat saga different from any other sentimental eulogy to your sweet pet? Well, I think the northern Europeans have a more earthy, direct, approach plus a perhaps detached viewpoint at the same time. I compared this "love story" to Garbo's "Queen Christina" in accepting the facts of life with joy and with a recognition of same mix of doubt and devotion that we share with the weather: cold and dark in winter, warm and almost tropical in summer. I'll close this account with a few sentences from the book. "By seducing us, Kitty has been incorporated into Swedish society. It's a long-term commitment. Cats can live to more than 15 years. I may I could be 90 by then. I may never reach that age. There is something appealing about that. I wouldn't mind dying in my bed with Kitty somewhere close by." That pretty much sums it up and says it all.

…but it’s not here yet! The weather is cooling and the days are shorter but we have a few good days left gosh darn it – so get out and take advantage before they are gone! Between the heat of summer and the cold of winter, you’re looking at a great time to get out with your dog and spend some quality time together. Let’s explore some ideas you may not have thought of so you can get out and about on nice days.

Walks and Hikes

Hiking in New England is the obvious tried and true ways to get out with your dog, but why not spice things up a bit?

Join a Doggie Walking Group

Rhode Island Dog Playgroups & Walks is a fun Facebook group for responsible dog owners in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts who would like meet up for walks, hikes or play dates! Kelly Payton started the group last winter so her dog Sadie could meet some like-minded dog owners and have some fun. Dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes are welcome to join as long as they are good with dogs and people and up-to-date on vaccines. “We’ve gone on some group walks in Lincoln Woods and it’s low-key and a lot of fun. People actually stop to watch us go by! I’ll be adding more meet ups throughout the state so I’d love to have more people join in!” Members are also encouraged to post on the group themselves when looking for walks and play dates. If you’re interested in joining, look up Rhode Island Dog Playgroups & Walks on Facebook. Sadie and I can’t wait to meet you!

Holiday Shopping

Speaking of shopping locally, now is the time to take Fido along for some last minute holiday shopping. Check out the many amazing local pet boutiques to pick up something special for the animal lover in your life. You can also check out the Animal Print Magazine’s special edition ‘Last Minute Stocking Stuffer Ideas’ filled with great ideas and where you can find items locally…yes, you can head out with your pooch to shop!

Obstacle Course

Instead of just walking, try turning it into an obstacle course! Encourage your dog to go around, under, over, and through obstacles you encounter like logs, benches, and more. You can also practice those training skills by asking your pet to perform skills they know well at various intervals. For example, you might ask for a down-stay at every oak tree you pass, or perhaps a high five at every other mail box, or maybe just a simple sit every 5 minutes. Asking your dog to use his brain WHILE using his body is a really good way to burn off more steam in a much shorter amount of time. It’s also a really great way to keep those manners sharp.

Outdoor Group Classes

Group classes are a great way to work your dog’s mind AND body – so why not take a class that is outside? Outbound Hounds and Spring Forth Dog Academy are local dog training businesses that offer humane, reward-based training via outdoor classes in Providence. For a more laid back activity that is appropriate for ANY dog (depending on your instructor),

you might want to give NoseWork a try! Classes that are offered at Canine Master in Seekonk, Jones Animal Behavior in Warwick, and some other places often take place outside (weather permitting of course).

Geocaching

Alternatively, turn a walk or hike into a geocaching adventure. This is a fun outdoor activity for dogs who love going for rides, with activity levels that range from quick “park and grabs” for cold days or elderly dogs to more challenging caches that require more physical exertion. Short trips might result in one cache, while a full day of rides and walks can result in dozens of them!

Scavenger Hunts

This can is another fun way for human friends as well as canine friends to spend some QT together. Go high tech with fun apps like Klikalu or Goose Chase, or keep it low tech with a list on your cell phone or old fashioned paper lists of creative, challenging, or silly items to find. Ideas can be found online, including things like a yellow leaf, a pine cone, a red door, something funny, a pretty rock – the ideas are endless, so get creative! Please, just remember to respect others by taking only pictures and leaving only footprints. Also, respect other dogs when you’re out and about by keeping YOUR dog on leash at all times. It is simply inappropriate to allow your dog – no matter how friendly – to go bounding up to other, leashed dogs without permission. While your dog may be friendly, the other dog may not be and there’s no reason to set both up to fail. To allow your dog more freedom, stop by a locally owned pet supply store to pick up a long training leash.

Mushroom Hunting

This is a walking activity I’ve recently taken up, as I love the challenge of finding and identifying new things. If you’re into the idea, please only take photos for identification and leave the picking and eating to the experts!

Hide and Seek

If your dog isn’t one who can or who enjoys going out into public, these activities can also be modified for your or a friend’s fenced yard. Hide and seek is another fame ideally suited to fenced yards and can be really fun game for any dog. Hide the dog’s favorite people, toys, treats, or anything they might want to hunt. s medical science extends the lifespan of pets, age-related cognitive decline in cats and dogs is on the rise. Clinical signs associated with cognitive dysfunction—often characterized by the acronym DISHAA: disorientation, social interactions, sleep-wake cycle disturbances, house soiling, activity changes (apathy or aimless wandering) and increased anxiety—are reported in almost half of dogs over the age of 10 and 30% of cats over the age of 11. In one study, older dogs receiving environmental enrichment plus an antioxidant diet showed the most improved cognitive scores, while environmental enrichment alone improved scores more than Continued on next page.

21 the group given the dietary treatment without enrichment. Physical activity has been shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in people. Increased perfusion to brain tissue, decreased body weight, up regulation of growth factors and improved synaptic plasticity may all be molecular mechanisms underlying the benefits of enrichment and activity therapies. Enrichment can be described as providing enhanced environmental stimuli. For our companion animals this means not just meeting their basic needs for health, nutrition and safety, but also providing low-stress and predictable social interactions, play, outlets for other natural behaviors, and sensory-stimulating opportunities. Of course, medical issues such as metabolic disease, dental disease and orthopedic pain should be addressed before starting enrichment activities in senior pets.

Some practical enrichment ideas you can try are: • Providing food toys or puzzles that encourage manipulating the device to receive food. Many commercial products are available and DIY ideas can be found on various websites. • Hiding food pieces around the house to simulate searching behavior. • Taking dogs on outdoor walks to provide some aerobic exercise and sensory exposure; in physically debilitated animals, a pet stroller or car rides can provide the sensory experience. (Note that many dog owners think placing the dog in the backyard can substitute

for walks. However, outdoor time in the typical backyard does not provide the same benefits because of the lack of novelty and activity.) • Providing safe outdoor time for cats with bungee harnesses or cat-specific fencing. Screened porches or outdoor enclosures do not encourage as much activity as walks or large fenced areas, but placement in sight of butterfly gardens or bird feeders increases the sensory stimulation. • Ensuring there is vertical space for cats both indoors and outdoors to help foster activity and provide safe places in a multi-cat household. • Spending a few minutes each day on reward-based basic obedience or simple trick training—a great method for mental stimulation and appropriate social interaction, especially in less mobile animals. • Encouraging play even in older animals. A play partner should support the appropriate level activity and not pester or distress the older animal. Toys can also be a good outlet for older animals but daily rotation, food and owner facilitation may be necessary. Evidence suggests that attention to environmental enrichment may make the most impact if started in median-aged animals.

Molly

Molly is a full-bodied brindle girl with such enthusiasm for life you can’t help but smile when you are around her. Molly was found abandoned and tied to a tree – no one knows who left her there, but thankfully some good Samaritans found her and contacted Providence Animal Control. It is always amazing to see dogs like Molly, who obviously weren’t treated as they should be from people in their past to be so forgiving and willing to be the best friends with every person they meet. Molly has a lot to teach us in the forgiveness category. She has been at the shelter for several months waiting to be adopted. Since Molly tends to get super excited and sometimes can be jumpy we think she will do best in a home without small children that she could knock down with her exuberance. We think Molly would do fine with other dogs in a home but would suggest a meet and greet to be sure. All of the folks who know Molly are hoping she will find her special home in time for the holidays. She deserves it! Lola Lola is just over two years old and has spent more than half her life in a shelter. Originally she was surrendered in Cranston because her people had children and decided she was no longer a good fit for their home. She waited close to a year there with no one wanting to adopt her so she was transferred to the RISPCA hoping she would be seen by different potential adopters…..it worked and Lola happily spent several months in a new home. Sadly, the adopter had some life style changes and decided Lola was no longer a good fit for his home and returned her to the RISPCA. Lola now once again sits in a kennel and waits and waits for that right person to come along and see all that she has to offer. Lola is a super smart girl – who is very eager to please and always up for any type of adventure. She loves car rides, running, swimming, playing fetch – you name it - she is in! What we did learn from her last adopter that perhaps Lola’s most favorite thing to do is cuddle…..she just loves sleeping in bed with her person and stealing the blankets whenever she is able. Lola is searching for an adult-only home where she can be the only pet. Otis Look at that grin! Otis is a young border collie and pit mix who is a current resident of the Cranston Shelter. Otis is oh-so-smart, in fact, one of his favorite things to do is learn. He enjoys brain games and learning new commands, and every time you walk by his kennel he greets with you a wagging tail - always hoping – maybe this is my person? Otis is reactive to other dogs so living in a kennel surrounded by barking dogs is very stressful for him. It was also discovered that Otis has a heart murmur so being in such a highly stressful environment is very detrimental to Otis. The shelter staff and volunteers have all fallen in love with Otis and his Can-Do Attitude. We are so hoping he can get adopter quickly to give him the best chance at a long and happy life.
