Pawternity Leave: Beer Company Gives Workers a Week Off Work When They Get a New Puppy A craft beer company is offering staff members with new dogs a week of ‘Puppy Parental Leave’. BrewDog, a canine-inspired Scottish beer company, will offer the benefit to staff at its soon-to-be opened Ohio brewery. At its headquarters in Aberdeenshire, the company has 50 office dogs it considers part of its crew. Founders James Watt and Martin Dickie, who started the company with their dog Bracken in 2007, said they were eager to give workers enough time to bond with their new pets and not worry about their work suffering.

It’s the story of a poet bus-driver whose journal of verses and gentle observations gets eaten by a pet dog, a white English bulldog that spends its time resting on cushions in his wee abode. It “belongs” to the charming wife of the central character, it is her dog, not really his. Nevertheless this household pet trots beside him as he stops at the local bar for a glass of beer. “Sit!” and “Stay” he says and the pooch obeys...even before the command. We watch the animal plot, however, against his human companion. He tilts the postbox in front of the house, just to annoy. When he chews and scatters the broken pages of the precious journal of metaphorical meanderings, there is an element not of playful mischief but of ill will at work. The hero of this saga has to learn to live without his written words, his precious memoirs, and the tale ends with a mysterious encounter with a traveler from a far-off land (Japan) who hands him a fresh notebook, bids him goodbye with an “Aha!”--whatever that means--and offers a happy-sad ending, a mix of love and regret, distance and intimacy.

on’t deny it: 98% of the time when you’re walking your dog around your favorite neighborhood park, you’re secretly daydreaming about getting your leash

tangled with that cute dog walker comin’ your way. Sadly, life just doesn’t always shake out that way (or ever, really), which is why we’re taking matters into our own hands and featuring some of our favorite Rhode Island singles and their dogs!

Regina & Bodie Photo by Traer Scott

Regina is a single, child-free (not counting her 7 year old lab/shepherd mix Bodie) and is interested in men who are athletic as she enjoys being active, exploring new places and things to do. “I am at a place in my life now that I really want to start travelling so a travel partner would be awesome! I think the best quality though is someone that can make me laugh. I find I am most

If any of our eligible singles (or their dogs) catch your eye, come meet some of them at our singles mixer and fundraiser, Love Potion K9! Our singles fundraiser is on May 11th at Revival Brewing Company in Cranston from 7pm-9pm. Proceeds from the suggested $5 donation and raffle will be donated to the Providence Animal Rescue League and Revival Brewing is generously donating 10% of all beer sales to the Providence Animal Rescue League! comfortable with those that are outgoing and fun. Oh yes, and most importantly he must love dogs!” Regina works as an administrative assistant at RI Hospital by day though music is her passion. “I was a voice and performance major at Berklee College of Music and The Boston Conservatory of Music. I did manage a full time music career for a while but that required traveling cross country and living out of hotel rooms. Now that I have settled in RI I remain working part time with The Mark Greel Band out of the Boston area.” Bodie is a 7 year old Black Lab/Shepherd mix who was adopted from PAWS New England Rescue. “I fell in love with him instantly watching his adoption video, filled out the application and went through the screening process. A week or so later he was brought up from Tennessee, (where he had been fostered) to live with me permanently. He is a very loving and sweet dog but he can be a bit timid at first (something we both have in common.) On your day off, where can we usually find you? In the summer the beach is my absolute favorite place. I love the ocean and even better...catching a sunrise or sunset. I am in awe of the beauty of nature and love to photograph the moon, and the sun. I also enjoy listening to live music and have a wide variety of taste in music. I go to concerts as often as I can. Oh, and of course, I love to shop. Tell us more about yourself. Music will always be a part of me. I am working on a few new projects and hope to be doing more local work. I enjoy working out and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I also love to cook and I think I am pretty good at it but I only really enjoy it when I have someone to cook for. There isn’t a meal I’ve made that Bodie hasn’t liked . Do you or your dog have a social media site you would like to share? I am on Facebook and Instagram My band also has a Facebook page “The Mark Greel Band” feel free to check it out.

Join Our Team

Foster A Homeless Pet! Joe Wilson, Jr. & Stella Joe is a 45-yr old actor in his 13th year as a member of the Resident Acting Company at Trinity Repertory Company. He is orginally from New Orleans and moved to Providence from NYC. Joe is (human) child free, interested in men and is the proud dad of Stella a 5-year old Black Lab. Tell us about Stella! Stella is a sweet, no drama girl. She was rescued from a shady breeder who was upset that she was growing too fast out of her cute puppy stage, and buyers would not find her appealing. She was only 5 1/2 months old, and she was plenty cute for me! She loves to chase a ball (tennis balls being her favorite), and doesn’t mind getting a little dirty doing so. What qualities do you look for in a good match? You know it when you see it and feel it. I have grown to not make too many prescriptions about ‘must haves’. I don’t say this to mean I am ‘settling’ in any way. I just want to be as open as possible, and I would hope the someone would do the same for me. None of us are perfect, and the ‘getting to know you’ dating period can be tricky and strange. No expectations, no demands! I love being pleasantly surprised. On your day off, where can we usually find you? Home, dog park, near by trail, beach, or in front of the TV, brunch with a friend, and catching up with my sometimes neglected everyday life. Being an actor creates some challenges with my schedule, so when I have down time, it’s all about reconnecting to friends, family and my pup. How would your friends describe you? Smart, talented, thoughtful, passionate, handsome, very handsome, the most talented man you will ever meet….well you left it up to ME to tell you what they think! Tell us about any hobbies or volunteer work you’re involved in. I am involved in all kinds of cool projects. My work on stage is only a part of my life here in Providence. 12 Kelly

& Sadie (top right)

Kelly is a 20-something single copywriter who also freelances for a few local magazines and lives in the East Bay. Her sidekick Sadie is a 7.5-year-old Border Collie/ Staffordshire Bull Terrier aka “Border Staffy”. “I adopted Sadie on April 16, 2016. Originally from Las Vegas, Sadie is a two-time owner surrender so I guess it’s true that third time’s the charm! In her first home, she actually trained with the world record holding flyball team so I think that explains her love of tennis balls. I don’t think she knows that she’s considered ‘older’ because she could run, swim, hike, and play fetch all day if she had things her way. We’re pretty active together and go hiking with friends and their dogs regularly.” What qualities do you look for in a man? Well, obviously must love animals. A good match would also be empathetic and more left-leaning – owners of a MAGA hat need not apply. Do you have any human children? Nope, but the kids I babysit think I’m pretty cool (some have even called me “the BEST BABYSITTER EVERRR”) which is no small accomplishment. How would your friends describe you? I’m no psychic and I doubt “pretty, pretty, pretty good” is a sufficient answer so I asked my good friend Rianna to take this one for me. [The] best way to describe you day to day is like a hummingbird: You stay busy but graceful. Your personality is an awesome mix of introvert and extrovert. You are totally cool with social events, but also content with doing low-key stuff. You’re outdoorsy and active but not Bear Grylls. You’re selfless, approachable, and very easy to talk to and confide in. Your laugh is contagious and your sarcastic humor is hysterical! Knowledgeable without being arrogant and you listen to people’s opinion whether or not you agree. Do you have any interesting hobbies? I’m currently training to be a Shelter Dog Enrichment Specialist for Handsome Dan’s Rescue for Pit Bull Type Dogs! Once I’m done training with the Lead Shelter Enrichment Specialist, I’ll be matched with a local adoptable dog in need to work with for a few hours each week. I’m super excited about it!

Sara is a 30-something Rhode Island native. She works for a college access program but can usually be found on her day off working with dogs at local city shelters. “I help them prepare for adoption and find their forever homes.” Tell us about your dogs! June is a 7-yr old Pointer mix who I met while I was working in an animal shelter. She was adopted out multiple times because she was lovely, but returned because she is a bit particular/random about who and what she likes (I can relate). She is the HBIC. Papi Chulo is a 4-yr old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. He was assigned to me as my shelter enrichment dog in the rescue I volunteer for; he was in a local shelter for over two years. We met and I was immediately smitten. Auggie (not pictured here) is anAmerican Bully/mutant mix. I stumbled across him on Facebook. He defies description... What qualities do you look for in a good match? Realistically, a partner in crime who has his own interests and will complement my life; someone who is kind, intelligent, fierce, and silly. A man who is at peace with himself and his past, but still passionate and curious about the world. (Think Ponyboy Curtis combined with Ragnar Lothbrok and a heaping helping of Will Ferrell.) How would your friends describe you? How else do I answer this question, but to ask them? “Ride or die, adventurous, altruistic, supportive, astute, riotous, the friend you pick first to be on any team...” “Sara is uniquely sincere and loyal with true conviction, traits not common in our society anymore. She knows who she is; she stands up for and speaks up for what is RIGHT. Old fashioned values, with an edgy flair. A sense of humor that wakes up your youth. A woman with a quiet, feminine gracefulness, who would haul strangers, men or women, over her shoulder out of a burning building. She is a rare jewel. A REAL true friend, a friend that is family.” What else should we know about you? I was the 2016 Volunteer of the Year for Handsome Dan’s Rescue for Pit Bull Type Dogs. I am a “true” redhead, a trivia black belt, and can play the accordion (minimally). Continued on next page 17.

Benefits of Grooming Your Dog!

While a clean dog is always a nice thing to have around the house, proper grooming provides more than the pleasant scent of a freshly shampooed pooch. Below are five benefits highlighting the importance and benefits of grooming your dog:

1. Healthy Skin & Coat Long and short-haired dogs alike benefit from regular brushing. It removes dead hair, dandruff, dirt, and also helps bring out the natural oils in a dog’s coat. Plus, regular brushing will help reduce shedding – reason enough here!

2. Preventive Health Care

Brushing, cleaning their teeth, clipping nails, and bathing your pup allows your groomer to inspect your pet and notice any abnormalities.

3. Properly Trimmed Nails

Nail trimming is a difficult but important task for many pet owners. Short nails are key for our dogs’ balance and proper weight distribution. Long nails can actually put stress and strain on other muscles and joints by causing them to rest their weight further back on the paw because the nail is too long.

4. Increases Social Skills

If you begin taking your puppy to the groomer at a young age it provides great training for getting them used to having their ears cleaned, being bathed and having their nails clipped.

5. Happy Dog

Clean pups not only get more cuddles but have you noticed how happy your dog is after they’ve been bathed? They feel great!

} Have You Heard of the LEAP Fund? The LEAP fund is a wonderful enrichment program at Providence Animal Rescue League. Animals come to PARL from all walks of life with a variety of experiences and backgrounds. Some of those that find their way to PARL need a little extra support to be happy and successful in a home. This is where our LEAP fund comes in! LEAP stands for Life Enrichment Animal Program. LEAP is a special fund designated to assist with the behavioral care of animals (primarily cats and dogs) both in the shelter and after adoption. Donations made to LEAP can help provide enrichment toys, products for reducing stress, or training packages depending on the individual needs of our animals and adopters. Peach (pictured) received extensive training while at PARL and was provided postadoption support thanks to the LEAP fund, all of which made her adoption possible! If you would like to donate to our LEAP fund, please contact us at 401.421.1399 or development@parl.org or visit our website at: http://parl.org/get-involved/leap-fund

PARL Awards Top Honor to Dimeo Construction Providence Animal Rescue League is honoring Dimeo Construction with its annual Stanley H. Mason Award, given to a person or organization whose efforts have aided PARL during the past year. The award will be presented at The Rescue, PARL’s 10th annual benefit event, taking place on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at The Pawtucket Armory (172 Exchange Street, Pawtucket). The event runs from 6:30 PM until 10:00 PM. PARL staff contacted Dimeo in 2016, knowing that the communityminded company might assist the shelter with its long-anticipated new dog adoption center, located in a converted garage space at PARL’s Elbow Street headquarters. The project had languished, unfinished for over two years. “Dimeo Construction assigned Steve Angell, who basically adopted the shelter,” says executive director Kara Larson. “He not only led the effort to find contractors in plumbing, electrical, and metalwork to kept to a tight schedule, but spent quite a few weekends himself, on a ladder, getting it done.” The new dog adoption center was completed in December 2016 and fully occupied and operational in February. The award was the result of a unanimous decision by PARL’s Board of Directors. It will be publicly presented at PARL’s signature annual fundraising event. This event raises tens of thousands of dollars to benefit PARL, through a culinary competition and auction. B101 personality Bill George will emcee the benefit. There will be a private VIP Lounge hosted by Millonzi Fine Catering and Bottles Fine Wine, with a complimentary raw bar in the VIP Lounge provided by Matunuck Oyster Bar.

Feeding Your Pets Better Written by Johnna Devereaux

made carbs very hard to find, and mankind made them very easy to find. Mammals were never intended to encounter this much dietary carbohydrate.”

I

t seems like every day a new brand of pet food appears on the shelves claiming to be the very best on the market. Terms like grain-free, novel protein and gluten free are the new buzz words in the pet food industry, but do you know what all of this really means for your pet? We caught up with world renowned animal nutritionist, Dr. Richard Patton for his thoughts on the ‘new’ normal in pet food. Richard Patton has formulated diets for nearly every species in the 40 years he’s been doing this and has traversed over 25 countries in the process. “I’m not anti-kibble per se but I am a devout critic of excess soluble carbohydrate,” says Dr. Patton. Dry expanded kibble is economic and convenient but it is not the best nutrition. It presents the pet with excess soluble carbohydrate.” Patton goes on to say that “Nature

When asked how he balances the knowledge he gained from firsthand experience working with animals versus the dogma of the pet food industry Patton very quickly responds, “I’ve managed to stay on my feet a long time, and I’ve tried to learn the lessons the gods set before me.” He says, “I am at peace with science as a process, and letting facts guide our learning. I am not afraid to question dogma. For example, if vitamin supplements in commercial pet foods are considered indispensable and mandated by the authorities, someone needs to explain to me all the wild canines that never see the first microgram of store bought vitamin yet thrive and reproduce just fine.”

Save the date! Sunday, June 4th.

Dr. Richard Patton will be speaking about animal nutrition locally on Sunday, June 4th at Fetch RI in Richmond, RI. The presentation will begin at 5pm and is free to the public. Vital Essentials is sponsoring the event. For more information visit: www.fetchri.com/upcoming-events.html or email Ready@FetchRI.com

Sean & Oscar

17

Sean is a 40-something Rhode Island native who lives in Providence. He’s a dog lovin’, beer brewer who’s friends describe as honest, hard working and dedicated. He’s a healer and a helper. Oscar is a Bully breed and he is a ‘timeless rescue,’ age unknown. “Oscar is my second Bully rescue, he is amazing! He comes to work with me every day at the brewery, he is an amazing mascot and brand ambassador for Revival. He is a love bug with Humans, but not the best with other dogs. I wish he was better but I’m working on it. He is a fixer-upper with a great foundation.” What qualities do you look for in a woman? Must like pizza, and have the ability to laugh at yourself and others and be able to celebrate the things that make us all different. What are you doing with your life? I brew beer for a living and I’m a hack musician, and I run the Providence Kickball League! Do you have any human children? Negative. I’m barren. On your day off, where can we usually find you? Block Island or at the Kickball field. What else should we know about you? I refuse to grow old in a conventional way. I will be surfing and playing in the sun till I turn to dust. Continued on page 26.

A New Study Says Dogs Are the Absolute Best Wingmen Written by Conor Gallagher www.thedatereport.com

We already know dogs are man’s best friend. Not to put it too simply, but they’re absolutley perfect. Dogs are innately happy, full of life, and somehow know exactly what their humans need even when we don’t. Dogs are magic. There, I said it, and finally, science agrees. A new study published in the Bloomsbury Journals, has found that dogs (aside from being magic) can also seriously help your pick-up game. According to the science, the subject’s success (here measured by trying to get someone’s number) jumped from a one-in-ten success rate to one-in-three. Yup, all because you were hanging around with your best friend who never eats your leftover pizza or steals your girlfriend. One bummer, which is really more of an adorable bummer because, you know, dogs, is that the picker-up-ee (meaning the person whose number you’re scoring) has preferences when it comes to your pup companion. Smaller puppies and adult Labradors did better than Pit Bulls, most likely because of a perceived cuddle factor. To each their own, but I’m pretty sure there’s someone (cough, me) who digs those rough-around-the-edges goofballs way more than some all-American golden pretty boy.

All said, for this wonderful happening of nature to work, you’ve got to get the courage up and talk to someone first. Therefore, after you finish this article and the most loyal of all furry companions is staring up at you, begging for some TLC, pay attention. Indulge their overly excited desire. Put them in a dog sweatshirt (cause I imagine some people own those) or your old high school wrestling tee and go for a walk in the park. But don’t forget a pen and paper. Trust us, you’ll need it.

Natural Home Remedies for 24

Flea and Tick Control Courtesty of www.petmd.com

A lot of people are reluctant to use chemical flea treatments because of the possibility of a toxic reaction with the skin. “If it isn’t safe for my children, how can it be safe for my pet?” they ask. Unless it is a full blown flea infestation, you may have good results by using gentler and safer methods for flea eradication and control and avoid some of the worst pests.

Juice ‘em Away Fleas are known to be repelled by citrus. The juice from a freshly squeezed orange or lemon can be lightly rubbed onto your pet’s fur to ward off the buggers. Take note that oil extracts from lemons and oranges (and any citrus) are not safe for cats

and dogs at all. The oil that is extracted from the rind of the citrus fruit contains limonene, an effective insect repellent as well as an all purpose household cleaner. Limonene is also irritating to the skin, and when ingested, can cause liver damage in cats and dogs. Limonene is found in household cleaning products and insect sprays, in home fragrance products, and may be found in some topical products (i.e., for use on skin). Take great care in using citrus oil products only in areas of the

home your pets cannot reach, and do not use it on yourself if your pets will be licking you, or on your pets’ hair or skin in any form. The oil is specific to the cells within the rind of the fruit and can only be extracted using specialty equipment, and so is not found in the fresh-squeezed juice of the fruit. If your pet licks a little of the juice off of his fur, there is very little risk of harm — always keeping in mind that allergies can happen to anyone. If your pet behaves oddly after using or eating anything different, discontinue its use immediately.

Rub-a-Dub Tub Remember the old cartoons where dogs would jump into water to relieve themselves of fleas? Water really does work. Since fleas do not grasp and hold onto the hair shafts, they fall off in the water and drown. A good dip in a tub of water will wash away most, if not all, of the fleas on your pet. Using a gentle pet shampoo or a little bit of regular dish liquid, along with a thorough brushing (an outdoor brushing is best), will go a long way toward ridding your pet’s body of fleas.

A Clean Home is a Happy Home Around the house, laundering pet beds and furniture covers, and vacuuming and disinfecting the floors — not just around your pet’s living spaces but all over — will help to control the population of fleas (just make sure you do not use products with volatile organic compounds). Always dump the bag or cannister of the vacuum, since fleas can continue to live inside the container.

In the yard, you might consider adding a natural predator of fleas. Nematodes are small worms that feed off of flea larva, and are easy to find at garden stores or pet shops. They are highly effective, with a noticable reduction in flea population within two days. Keep in mind that the type of nematode that is being recommended here is termed a “beneficial” nematode. It is not the type that is known for infecting animals, such as the heartworm. Lady bugs can also be found at your local gardening shop, and are also very effective. Lady bugs feast on soft bodied bugs like fleas, and a mature lady bug can eat an average of 50 insects a day. Finally, fire ants are known to eat flea Continued on next page.

SEE WHAT THE DOGS ARE BARKING ABOUT

Blades of Fury Ticks hang out in tall grass and use the opportunity to grab on to passersby when they feel body warmth — which they are very good at doing. If you are going to be spending time in wooded or grassy areas with your dog, you might want to fashion some cover-up clothing for your dog in order to avoid ticks. An old t-shirt can be altered to fit your dog’s body, and old socks can be cut to make “leg warmers.” This may not entirely prevent ticks from making their way onto your dog, but it may work to keep most of them off since they have nothing to latch onto, and will slow the rest down so they do not spend as much time on your dog’s skin (the longer ticks stay on the skin, the more likely they are to transmit disease).

Essential Oils Because ticks carry dangerous bacteria, repelling them is a priority. One of the natural repellents that a lot of people have success with is rose geranium oil, which can be applied to your dog’s collar. Do NOT use rose geranium oil on your cat, though. Cats can have a bad reaction to essential oils, primarily because they spend a lot of time grooming, which means that anything on their skin goes into their mouth. With ticks, the best thing you might do is to check your pet a few times a day when you are in an area that has ticks, and remove them promptly. Proper technique is important for removing ticks, so make sure that you consult a veterinarian before doing it yourself if you are not completely sure of how to do it.

William Forrest & Henry (not his dog) William Forrest, who went by Billy as a kid is in his early 30’s, owns and operates a private personal training studio - “I love what I do, it never feels like work.” His friends describe him as energetic, kind, helpful, an old soul. William is not only interested in women but is also in the market to adopt a dog! Please tell us a little about what life might be like with your future dog. With my work schedule mid-day adventures with a dog will be easy and fun. I also will be able to have a dog at my studio which would be great for everyone. In the past, my dog Jetty (who is no longer with me) and I would canoe, trail run and watch movies together. I’m hoping to find a dog that is into that. I don’t think it will be that hard, haha. In the meantime, Henry (in the photo) a rescue who was adopted by some good friends of mine goes for adventures with me. What qualities do you look for in a good match? A good match for me might have some similar interests. Active, intelligent adventurous and likes food. On your day off, where can we usually find you? On days off I’m usually working on my house or yard, at the beach, or out to dinner. Where are you from and where do you live now? I’m a New Englander, born in Connecticut. Spent some time up in New Hampshire and now I live in Rhode Island. Do you have any human children? I don’t, but I very much look forward to being a dad someday. What else should we know about you? I really enjoy board games, card games and puzzles. Generally speaking I like challenges and accomplishing stuff. I’m a good person to have around if you are trying to get something done or find something fun to do :) Do you or your dog have a social media site you would like to share? What’s social media? Just kidding, but really I’d rather connect with people in real life. Continued on next page.

Marimer & Dice

Marimer is a single 30-something journalist, English professor, yoga professor and is open to random gigs she happens upon that she finds interesting. She’s interested in men who are kind, intelligent with a sense of humor. Tell us how Dice came into your life. My dog Bear passed away suddenly and I was heartbroken. A few months later I was scrolling thru the local pound’s Facebook page and came upon Dice the Pitbull. His post said, “Help me. I’m blind, but I’m friendly and I love to give kisses.” I was unsure if I was ready for another dog or if I even wanted another one. I went to meet him, and the second I saw him, I thought, “He’s perfect.” I was unable to adopt him because his breed is illegal in the city I was in, so I contacted a fellow dog lover from a different county and she came to the rescue. He stayed registered under her name until I moved to Providence, a city far too progressive for laws that hinder responsible dog owners from caring for the breeds that are hardest to place. Where do you live? I live in downtown Providence. Beforehand, I most recently lived in Miami, Florida. Do you or your dog have a social media site you would like to share? ADOPT ME!

North Kingstown Animal Shelter 395 Hamilton Allenton Road, NK, RI.

Hi there, I’m Jake! I’m about 3 years old. Some things I love are going for walks, car rides, toys and I would just love a person of my own to enjoy these things with. I need to be the only pet in the household and would do best in a home without children. My adoption fee includes training sessions with a professional dog trainer!

Say hello to Cora! This beauty is an approximately 3 year old, female, pit bull type dog. Cora loves her toys, sometimes dipping them in her water bowl! Cora’s adoption will be a special one because her adopters will need to be introduced to her a few times her. Taking the time to get to know this girl will be well worth the effort!

Sweetie Couch Potato This beautiful girl is Sweetie. She is 7 years old, spayed and up to date on her shots. Sweetie loves to snuggle in a blanket on her kitty tower and will act very shy at first. She has lived with other cats, but we are unsure about her history with dogs.

Baby Say hello to Baby! She is a 12 year old spayed female who will answer you immediately with a loud “Meow, come sit with me”. Baby loves attention and will make a great companion. She has experience living with other cats, but not dogs.

Sweet Binks Rabbit Rescue, Inc. Foster, RI • www.rirabbits.org

Hello! My name is Gloria. I’m healthy, and have great clipped coat. I’m spayed and available for adoption. I’m tidy and good with my litterbox. I’m a good bonding candidate or a good single/first bunny for committed/adult home. I’m about 1.5 years old, please adopt me!

Hello! My name is Jenna. I’m healthy and mature and just recently spayed. I can be somewhat shy with strangers and I’m a little uncertain about my head being touched. But I do love people! Please adopt me!

Hello! My name is Thyme. I have been at Sweet Binks for THREE years! My sister, Rosemary, was recently adopted and now it is my turn! I’m 3+ years old, spayed, very tidy and great with my litter box. I would be a great bunny for adult home or home with older kids.

Hello! My name is Isabelle. I’m active, happy and about 1.5 to 2 years old. I’m healthy, spayed and available for adoption. I’m very good with my litter box. Due to my tough beginnings, I’m probably best for a home with kids over 7 years old and maybe mellow dogs. I seem to do well with other bunnies, so please adopt me!

Save One Soul Wakefield, RI • www.sosarl.org

Hello! My name is Bradley. I’m a large Shepherd/Black Mouth Cur mix and need to lose about 10-15lbs. I’m affectionate, like to ride in cars, tolerate baths, and can swim. I’m house trained, crate trained and leash trained. I love other dogs in open spaces, and love people too!

Hello! My name is Chico. I’m house trained, crate trained, and walk well on a leash. I’m good in the car, obedient, gentle, intelligent, and eager to please. I LOVE to sunbathe, as well as burrow under the covers and get really cozy. Though I love humans I prefer when I’m not the center of attention.

Hello! My name is Chocco. I’m approximately 18 months old and believed to be a Labrador Retriever mix. I have a deep dark chocolate, almost black looking coat. I weigh 75 pounds and love other dogs and love to play rough with other large dogs. I would love a playful canine buddy who is close to my size or larger.

Hello! My name is Digger. I’m a Hound/ Cattle Dog/Shepherd mix and about 10 months old. I have a beautiful reddish-brown brindle, black and white coat. I loves to rough house and run around with other dogs. I’m affectionate with people, and always eager for the next adventure.

Help Save Lives... Adopt A Pet Today! Providence Animal Control 200 Terminal Rd Providence, RI

Hi!! I am Maureen although I am kind of just a baby myself - less than one year old - I am having babies of my own - YIKES!!! The shelter is hoping to find me a foster or adoption home before the big day - having kittens will be stressful enough - so I really don’t want to have them in a shelter.

Hi! I’m Orson! I have the most gorgeous brindle coat. I was recently found as a stray and would be best in a home with someone who has large-dog experience and without small children. I can get over excited sometimes and may inadvertently knock down little kids. But I’ll love you!

Hello! My name is Sullivan. I’m a large, handsome boy looking for a home. I’m a staffy, pit, lab mix and very well mannered. I’m about 4 years old. I’m already house trained and ready to go home today. Since I’m a big dog that doesn’t always know how to not show my excitement, I’m looking for a home that doesn’t have any young children.

Hello! I’ Lady Hawk. I came from a home with way too many cats but I do like other cats. Please approach slow, I am pretty nervous but I am getting better. I will need a quiet, experienced home where my humans will let me come out of my shell slowly. I could definitely live with another cat who might teach me to be more outgoing.

Providence Animal Rescue League 34 Elbow St, Providence, RI • www.parl.org

Hi! My name is Michelangelo and I am a 1 year old male. I am used to living around other cats and even have a couple brothers and a sister that are also looking for new homes. I’ll help you with all your chores, and I’ll help you relax when we’re done. You’ll wonder how you ever managed without me.

Hi! My name is Precious and I am a 2 year old female. I am a gentle lady that likes to make new friends, but I can be just a bit nervous at first. I’m looking for “someone who enjoys quiet times and togetherness.” Could that someone be you?

Hi! My name is Pouncer and I am a 6 year old female. I am a sweet girl that is looking for some love and consistency. When it comes to relationships, I’m very level-headed. I don’t leap in paws first, if you know what I mean. But give me a little time, and then I’ll shower you with purrs, head-butts, and plenty of lap time.

Hello! I am Eeyore. I am a 3 year old Rex mix rabbit. I am on the small side for rabbits. As my friend Eeyore the donkey says “It never hurts to keep looking for sunshine”... so here I am, looking for sunshine in a new home. If I sound like the perfect bunny for you, come adopt me!

East Greenwich Animal Protection League 205 Hallene Road, Warwick • www.egapl.com

Hello! My name is Tiffany. I’m a shy dog but warm up quickly. Once I feel safe around you I’m a real cuddle bug. I’m a 5 year old, female, tan, Chihuahua mix. I like other small dogs and have been well socialized. I’m up to date on vaccinations and have been spayed. Please adopt me!

Hello! My name is Punkin. I’m a gorgeous 2 year old, light tan, female, Chihuahua mix. I love to go for walks and I’m great on a leash. I’m up to date on vaccinations and have been spayed. Please adopt me!

Hello! My name is Wrigley. I’m going to make a family very happy. I’m like a little ray of sunshine and I’m 4 year old, black and tan, male, Corgi mix. I love to play with my toys and run around. I can be a nervous guy so a home without small children would be the best fit for me. Please adopt me!

5 Quotes That’ll Help You Cope with Losing Your Pet

Pets are more than just residents in our homes; they are family, the furry friends we lean on when we’re sad and know we can count on after a long day. Having their love and trust fills a void in our lives as they hold a very special place in our hearts. Whenever we’re feeling lonely, our pets greet us and are there to dry our tears in their fluffy fur and shower

us with sloppy kisses. There’s no question that owning a pet can be very therapeutic and a major source of happiness. In spite of their silly antics that often end in torn couches or a trip to the cleaners, their endless zest for adventure is priceless. Most of all, our pets are a source of unconditional love; their loyalty and compassion for us is infinite.

“Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog, it merely expands the heart. If you have loved many dogs your heart is very big.” – Erica Jong “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose; All we love deeply, becomes a part of us.” – Helen Keller “It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them and every new dog who comes into my life gift me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all of the components of my heart will be a dog and I will become as generous and as loving as they are.” – Anonymous “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” – Antole France “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” – Dr. Seuss “Dogs lives are too short...their only fault, really.” – Agnes Sligh Turnbull
