{Letter From The Editor}

e’ve made it to our big summer issue, and it was great fun to put together. Our features this month have reminded me of some of the scariest times with my pets - (Harvey’s introduction to Angell’s poison control hotline) and some of our more hilarious times…one of which prompted our most risque article to date - “Honey is that you?…Oh no it’s the dog.” Having a pet occasionally forces us to face certain things that we would rather keep quiet about, but in the end, our pets certainly do offer some great dinner time storytelling and of course huge doses of pure love.

On another note, last week was the first of many amazing events I plan to attend and sponsor this summer. ‘The Rescue’ was a beautifully organized event for the Providence Animal Rescue League. This year the Animal Print joined forces with photographer Traer Scott to donate a photo shoot with one selected photo to appear on the cover of our next issue. I was thrilled to learn this morning that our silent auction donation raised more money than any other auction item. We raised $1,400. Hearing that made me feel honored to help raise $$ for this great shelter and incredibly proud to publish a magazine that is worthy of that kind of donation. Going through old issues, it amazes me at how far we’ve come with writing, design and with the additions of some great new columns, which include Animal Law, Whole Pet Health and Behavior. Another element that has really made a huge difference is the addition of our Senior Designer, Paul O’Hearn. He has really begun to pull all the elements together in a whole new way. Lost Parrot Gives Vet Name And Address TOKYO, Japan - When Yosuke the parrot flew out of his cage and got lost, he did exactly what he had been taught – recite his name and address to a stranger willing to help. Police rescued the African grey parrot two weeks ago from a neighbor’s roof in the city of Nagareyama, near Tokyo. After spending a night at the station, he was transferred to a nearby veterinary hospital while police searched for clues, local policeman Shinjiro Uemura said. He kept mum with the cops, but began chatting after a few days with the vet.

Reality TV - Comes To Rhode Island Last month, Park Ave Puppy’s of Cranston, R.I. was contacted by Stick Figure Productions of NYC, they are the producers of such hit shows as “Kimoria Lee Simmons Fabulous Life” and the “Real House Wives” of NYC. The Producer has seen Park Ave Puppy’s on another reality show TLC’s “While You Were Out” and loved the chemistry of the store and their passion for pets. So on April 5, a film crew came to Park Ave Puppy’s to follow a day in the life of the stores employees’s and show how crazy a day in the life of a busy barkery, grooming, and retail boutique can be. The filming also showcased some of the PARL’s shelter dogs being groomed and becoming ready for adoption. Stay tuned to see what happens next…

Foxboro Dog Park is Officially Re-Opened! Foxboro Dog Park is again open Mondays and Thursdays from 10am-7pm, Saturday from 9am-7pm and Sunday 12N-5pm. What about a goldfish? Is this an animal? Should there be a distinction between domestic animals and wild animals? Would a better definition of animals be: all nonhumans? POISON Angell Animal Medical Center’s

They can all be poisonous to pets and even the most careful, cautious pet owner may find him or herself in a situation where their pet has ingested a potentially toxic substance. Boston area native Virginia Hadley had one such experience several months ago, and it was the Angell Poison Control Hotline that came to the rescue. The hotline, which can be contacted at 1-877-2ANGELL, is available to area residents thanks to a partnership between the MSPCA/ Angell Animal Medical Centers and the ASPCA’s board-certified veterinary toxicologists at the Animal Poison Control Center who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to offer advice and provide information to pet owners and veterinarians alike.

The outcome could have easily been a bad one – it was a snowy weekend night, and the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic was more than thirty minutes away. Fortunately for Hadley, she had the number for the poison control hotline posted on her refrigerator, as she had learned of the service when she adopted Daisey from the MSPCA several months earlier. “I called and they instructed me on how to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide and we were able to get her to an emergency clinic shortly thereafter. It’s a good thing that we called because she was in pretty bad shape for a while there and the vets said that the outcome may have been different if her body had had a chance to absorb more of the toxins.”

Virginia Hadley’s miniature pinscher Daisey is alive and well today thanks to the experts at the Poison Control Center, who came to the rescue in January 2008.

Hadley’s case is just one of hundreds that the poison control center handles each day, as nearly 400 pet owners and veterinarians call the hotline daily, from the Boston area and beyond.

“My daughter was staying at my home for a belated holiday visit,” Hadley explained. “We went into Boston for the day, did some shopping, and we returned home to find that Daisey had raided my daughter’s luggage. This is a dog who chews or tries to eat just about anything – goats don’t have anything on her – and she ate chocolate, she ripped apart a pack of cigarettes and she was just starting on a tube of lotion when we came home and found her.”

When calling, pet owners are first asked to provide basic information such as the pet’s species, breed, age, sex, and weight. Callers are then asked to provide information on the actual exposure incident, including what toxins or products were involved and method of exposure. The experts will also discuss the pet’s symptoms and how much time has elapsed since the exposure to the toxin, and based on this information, an action plan is developed. Recommendations can range from closely monitoring the

15 the Animal Poison Control Center provided Georgia with information on how to induce vomiting and up came wrappers, chocolate truffles that Harvey had swallowed whole, and an ornament pieces. A bit of investigation revealed that the lacquer used on the ornaments was not toxic once dried, and since Harvey was able to bring up the chocolate before it was absorbed by his system, the effects from this second incident were minimal. Today, both Harvey and Daisey are happy, healthy and as mischievous as ever, thanks to the Animal Poison Control Center, which helps over 130,000 pet owners every year. With so many poisons out there, it’s very possible that every pet owner will at some point wonder whether their pet is in danger. And if a call to the poison control center leaves a pet owner wondering where they can turn for medical care, they won’t have to look too far. Angell Animal Medical Center offers ‘round the clock care at its state-of-the art facility in Boston, and for those island dwellers, there’s a second branch located on Nantucket. In addition to providing emergency and critical care, Angell Animal Medical Center has an array of veterinary specialists on staff. Pet parents can make appointments to meet with specialists in a wide array of areas, including anatomic and clinical pathology, avian and exotic pet medicine, behavior, cardiology and cardiac surgery, dentistry, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, general medicine, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, nutrition, oncology, ophthalmology, pain medicine and surgery. Angell is also a leader when it comes to veterinary studies. Some current ongoing studies include a weight loss study and a renal study, designed to determine the impact of diet when it comes to treating dogs with kidney disease.

Why is this important?

If you own an animal, work with animals or advocate on behalf of animals, then you should learn the laws in your state. The type of animal involved will dictate the laws that apply. There are laws that protect your animals, laws that regulate your animals and laws that determine what you must do if you own, work with or advocate on behalf of animals. For example, Rhode Island has seven different species of native non-marine turtles. Some might think of these turtles as cute, little animals to bring home to a put in a box as a pet. But the state has several of its turtles on a list of “endangered, protected and species of concern wildlife.” Therefore, possession of a protected turtle could be a violation of law. Massachusetts just became the first state in the nation to create a management plan for its offshore resources. This law will help protect ocean wildlife. If you work as a commercial fisherman, then this new law, which has a special provision relative to codfish, could affect you.

Conclusion

Defining what is in fact an animal under the law is not necessarily a straightforward determination. The Legislature may define a word differently than it is generally used or understood. Take an inventory of your animals and find out how your animals legally defined your state. You may be surprised at what you find.

You look into each other’s eyes, perhaps caress one another gently, or just wink and nod - but before you know it one thing leads to another. It’s the perfect moment, filled with passion and anticipation. Then it happens…a cold, wet nose where it shouldn’t be. Talk about a mood killer!

In a culture where we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t all openly discuss sex, it is natural to feel mixed emotions after being â&#x20AC;&#x153;caughtâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;watched.â&#x20AC;? Let me assure you â&#x20AC;&#x201C; your pets do not know what is happening and there is no reason for you to be embarrassed. If your pet sees your naughty bits, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a big deal.

Then there are pets who display moderate or serious anxiety during intimate times. I have no idea why my dog shook during intimate times, but I can only assume she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand what was happening. She tends to be a bit on the fearful side anyway, but that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean we should ignore her fear. Fearful or anxious behavior requires attention, and the assistance of a behaviorist may be needed. In our case, we found that the best solution was to just stop letting her sleep with us when we are both in bed. She sleeps quite comfortably on the couch or in one of her beds, never shakes and is quite happy with the arrangement. And frankly, so are we!

Pets are simple. They do not understand things like being naked, sex or kissing. What they do respond to is shouting or odd body movements because these things are out of the norm for a pet â&#x20AC;&#x201C; what the heck is my person doing!? And how do pets investigate unusual things? They sniff or, God forbid, lick the things they are curious about. It may be really creepy, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just innocent curiosity and investigation. So what can you do? In a case where your pet is displaying aggressive behavior, call a qualified behaviorist as you could have a potentially very dangerous situation that needs to be addressed right away. There are some who believe dogs do not belong in the bed at all, however, I do not agree itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always that black and white. Certainly, there are homes where pets just do not belong on furniture but if your pet is not displaying aggressive or overly assertive

And what about the average person who is just not comfortable with being â&#x20AC;&#x153;watched?â&#x20AC;? Try escorting your pet off the bed, crating them, shutting the bedroom door, or simply ignoring them. One thing that may help is to have a â&#x20AC;&#x153;game planâ&#x20AC;? for pets during intimate times. Make sure both partners know the plan and practice it ahead of time just like you would when teaching any new skill to your pet. While researching photographers for our summer feature, we were thrilled to come across a studio with such a playful and diverse portfolio. dane + dane studio is a pet photography and design studio based in Seattle and Portland but serving clients around the globe. It would seem that we not only found a wonderful photographer, J.Nichole Smith, but also an entire studio dedicated to pets and people too! dane + dane studios is no longer just a girl her dog and her camera. Founder J. Nichole Smith’s studio now consists of a number of people who specialize in areas such as photography, branding, design, artful corporate pet photography and even more. One interesting niche that dane + dane has ventured into is dog wedding photography. Amilia Soper, who is the other photographer at dane + dane, specializes in cats and weddings and is considered the ‘resident expert’ with both. Founder, Nichole explains, “dog wedding photography is a novel concept and a tight niche in the wedding photography world.”

Party Cookies 1 large apple 1/4 cup honey 1/2 cup water 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup oatmeal 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour plus 1/8 cup whole wheat flour. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Core, slice and mince the apple (use a food processor if you have one). In a large bowl, combine the minced apple bits, honey, water, cinnamon, and oatmeal. Gradually blend in the wheat flour, adding enough to form a stiff dough. In a small bowl, add 1/8 cup wheat flour. Spoon the dough by rounded teaspoon onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Flatten each cookie using the bottom of a glass dipped in the wheat flour (to prevent sticking). Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and flip each cookie to brown evenly on both sides. Reduce oven temperature to 325° F (180° C). Return to oven and bake for an additional 30 minutes. Let cool overnight. Makes about 3 dozen crunchy cookies, depending on how big you make them.

Peanut Chicken Chunk Treats 1 cup whole wheat flour 1 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup corn meal 1/2 cup wheat germ 1 cup chicken broth (low sodium, 0 fat) 1/2 cup peanut butter 1 cup chopped chicken jerky (less than a 1/2" size) Mix the ingredients thoroughly, until a stiff dough forms. Knead dough for 1-2 minutes, then roll 1/4" thick. The chicken chunks may make this a little difficult if you’ve made them too big. I didn't have a small cookie cutter so I used a shot glass to make 1 1/4" circles in the dough then transferred to a cookie sheet. I placed a small piece of jerky on top of each treat. Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour, then turn off oven and let set for another 30-60 minutes until completely dry.

Local RI dog trainer Jeff Gellman is working to help save the lives of hard to adopt dogs in partnership with The Providence Animal Rescue League. Jeff is taking in one dog at a time into his private training kennel and conducting a two week training boot camp with each dog. He acts as a foster home while incorporating his “boot camp” for these homeless dogs from PARL. At the conclusion of the training period, Jeff works to find a new Max - currently available for adoption owner for the dog and following up with a minimum of three hours of training for the family. Jeff Gellman does this at no charge to shelter or prospective new parents. All costs associated with feeding/housing and training each individual dog are incurred by him. Jeff is well known in the Northeast as a rehabilitator of hard to train dogs and is hugely successful with dogs that no one else seems to be able to train. He finds that his unorthodox but humane training methods are well received by both dog and human. Jeff currently has 3 dogs ready for adoption, including Max who came from PARL. Jeff tells us, “Max has learned sit/stay, down/stay, heel, place and wait. He is a high energy dog and would do well with a family that has a fenced in yard and another dog for him to play with. A New Leash On Life Salem, MA

The compassion that started at Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem M.A., 31 years

ago has now blossomed into a state of the art facility that will set the standard for all shelters across America. The new building on Highland Avenue in Salem, M.A. will allow Northeast Animal Shelter to continue its mission, rescuing homeless dogs across America and local homeless cats for many years to come. In addition to placing many more cats and dogs with loving families, the shelter is now able to expand it’s outreach into the community with multiple outreach programs that include an expansive humane education initiative. This will help stop homelessness before it starts by teaching the next generations the importance of kindness towards animals.

Lots of donations were made and everyone had a wonderful time. Kristina was very grateful for all of the love and support.

Kristina Sprengel has volunteered and worked in the Animal-Care field since the age of 13. She would tell you that she is married with eight adopted “children.” These consist of Dogs, Cats and other animals she found needing a home. The more needy the animal the more passion she has for them. Kristina’s dogs are arguably, her reason for living. Her oldest, Snoopy, a 14 year old Dalmatian was given up by his owners at the age of eight. Fearing that he would be put to sleep, she made arrangements and adopted him. Six years later she still waits on him, often literally on hand and knee. When Kristina adopted Snoopy she was already the mother of a Liver Spot Dalmatian named Tosha. She

Treating Canine Arthritis

ust like humans, many dogs suffer from arthritis pain and inflammation as they age, as joints and bones naturally degenerate over time. Fortunately, arthritis can often be managed with the help of acupuncture,Traditional Chinese Medicine, supplements and nutrition. Natural and alternative therapies are generally safe, effective and can be used in conjunction with western medicine.

If your dog suffers from arthritis, these are a few natural remedies that are helpful: Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate with MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) will help protect and lubricate joints. Research has shown that MSM has an strong anti-inflammatory effect. Glucosamine has been studied for over 20 years in humans, and has been proven effective to relieve arthritic joint pain. Please note that it may take four to six weeks before your dog feels the results from these supplements. An Omega 3 essential fatty acid supplement from fish oil or flaxseed oil also works as an anti-inflammatory.These help to lubricate the joints and help with inflammation. Omega 3 oils will also improve the health and appearance of your dog’s coat. Omega 3 oils have been proven to help reduce excess weight in people and dogs. Nutritional supplements containing enzymes and antioxidants have been shown to reduce inflammation, promote healthy joints, increase circulation and support immune function. One product of this type in Wobenzym(r), a

nutritional product for humans. I’ve received good reports from people using this supplement with arthritic dogs. Diet plays an essential role in decreasing the symptoms of arthritis. Studies have indicated that wheat can exacerbate pain and cause inflammation in both humans and animals. Cooking for your dog is the best option. However if you cannot make the time to cook, then make sure you are feeding your dog the best food you can find. Choose a safe brand that is organic, and contains free-range meat. Unfortunately most grocery stores do not carry the best pet food brands. It is the smaller independently owned pet supply shops and on-line shops that carry the better quality brands. Your dog’s food should also be wheat, corn and soy free.These filler ingredients may exacerbate arthritis and often are involved in weight gain.Wheat, soy and corn products have also been linked to allergies and skin problems in animals. Make sure the treats you feed your dog are also free of wheat, corn and soy, especially if your dog is overweight, as this puts more pressure on already weakened joints. One of my favorite dog treats is Cinna-bones made by Solid Gold. These cookies are not only free of wheat, soy or corn but they also contain cinnamon which is very effective in relieving pain in arthritis made worse with cold damp weather.

33 Acupuncture & Arthritis Study after study have shown that acupuncture and Chinese herbs are effective to relieve the pain and inflammation of arthritis in both humans and dogs. Canine acupuncture is also an effective treatment for hip and elbow dysplasia, ligament and tendon injuries, and many other ailments. Acupuncture helps to increase circulation to the muscles and joint capsules, providing more oxygen and slowing cell degeneration. It also relieves painful muscle spasms and releases endorphins to make your dog feel better. Most humans and dogs feel relaxed and experience pain relief after an acupuncture session. Don’t expect an instant one-treatment miracle, though. Acupuncture has a cumulative effect. Over time, the treatments build on one another, giving better results with each successive treatment. These natural approaches to treating canine arthritis are generally safe and effective, but you should check with your pet healthcare provider before using a new supplement. reta my IG (Italian greyhound) is the perfect pooch for paintings and good as gold as a greyhound for the galleries. I copied the columns that Animal Print has published and featured, and entered a collage of the cutout pages, framed in cherrywood, for a show this spring at the R.I.S.D. museum. They put my piece in a special glass case (that’s how valuable it was?) and a former museum director, Franklin Robinson, managed to auction it off successfully. As of this writing, I don’t know who welcomes Greta and her ghostly images into his or her parlor, but I am, or we are, proud of this contribution to the realms of art.

Actually, Greta’s breed was designed for beauty, to pose prettily for portraits, and this has not been Greta’s debut or coming out. She sat for an illustration done by Mike Bryce for a book of poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay, and somebody in Jamestown purchased the original water color. I never found out who it was or where it has found its home by the bay. The French artist, Rosa Bonheur, once famously painted an Italian greyhound, but Greta has mostly been translated into words, my hymns and odes to her glory, or into candids and snapshots…with one other recent and remarkable exception. We visit the underground art world of Gerry Puleo, who gathers local professionals and amateurs with brush, pen, and charcoal at easels set up around a raised stage. Greta and I were asked to sit for a three-hour session and we accepted graciously, nay, enthusiastically. These days, our theme is aging gracefully. Greta at 15 is white in the snout…just like me. People still stop us to admire her charm, and children mistake her for a puppy, but on closer inspection you can Reader’s Choice... see that she has the dignity and detachment of canine wisdom. I mean, we both show our age a bit, but we look great as a team. Greta was WINNER! BEST not born to drag sleds over the snow and ice, Pet Boutique in RI or to hunt anything but a butterfly or to guard much beyond her own doggie-bed. She evolved to embody refinement and leisure. People regale me, or challenge me, with tales of the incredible longevity of their dogs, and I hope that Greta Best of goes on and on and sets them back on their Rhode Island heels. But whatever the seasons may bring, Winner Greta will survive as a symbol and an icon. I confide in my IG and hope she likes my whispers and confidences. “Greta, you and I will live forever as art!” Does she care? We dog lovers defy the logic of the scientists and the realists. We know something ancient about the phantom world, the storybook world, where the spirit comes through and goes forth. Greta was born on Garbo’s birthday. Garbo lives as an image on a screen. Dom Mom of the Year - Continued from pg. 31 was Kristina’s Best-friend since childhood. They welcomed Snoopy into their lives and spent a wonderful five years together until late spring of 2007. Tragically, Tosha developed a violent seizure disorder that despite extensive attempts at treatment, ultimately took her life. Losing her best friend, Kristina became a different person. It was as if part of her died with “Tosh”. After several months of melancholy existence, I knew that only one thing could ever fill the void left in her heart. An extensive search, revealed a young female Dal in Oklahoma in need of a home. Kristina saved up money in order to have her flown in to New England. I can remember watching the cart pull up with little Sophia in her cage. An immediate twinkle could be seen in Kristina’s eyes as they carried the fragile pup over to her. She was beautiful. After only a few months of adjusting to her new surroundings, Sophia developed a dangerous case of pneumonia. Kristina stayed up day and night tending to her needs until she was able to recover. Only a few weeks later, Sophia began to exhibit unusual neurological behaviors. These consisted of head-bobbing, unsteady gait and ultimately becoming frozen stiff with intense pain. Kristina rushed Sophie from one emergency clinic to the next, each one running different tests, each test raising more questions. After watching Kristina suffer with the loss of her first Dal, this became all too unbearable to witness. She spent ever free moment of her time at Sophie’s side, trying to make her comfortable. She only seemed to sleep by passing out from all of the exhaustion and crying. Eventually, Sophia was diagnosed with Steroid Responsive Meningitis. This like the pneumonia was likely the result of a hereditary auto-immune disorder. Despite the ever increasing mountain of veterinary bills and extreme emotional strain, Kristina spared no expense of time or finance whether she had it or not, to save her little girl. To date, Sophia has pulled though by staying on a strict plan involving both medicine and diet. This June, Kristina is planning a huge celebration for Sophia’s 1st birthday against all odds. Kristina gives selflessly towards improving the lives of dogs. I sincerely wish that you will give her your serious consideration.

Mantha – If you’ve heard that song that goes like this…”sad eyes, turn the other way, I don’t want to see you cry…” then you’ll understand why it comes to mind when we reflect on Mantha’s story. Her owners brought her unannounced and just dropped her off, claiming they were being evicted -- the new excuse for people who abandon their animals.

Hevena was running around a Cambridge nieghborhood very pregnant when St. Meows was alerted to her plight. Not sooner after she was settled in her. Hevena gave birth to two adorable orange kittens. Sadly one of them died. She became all the more attach to her baby son, Jenner, and they’re inseperable. So we are adopting these two as a pair.

Nishka epitomizes the adage “life is unfair.” She wants only one things out of life – to be normal. But she has had some very awful demons form her past to overcome. She was severely beaten by her former owner who then ultimately dumped her at a busy intersection in Hyde Park.

Willis proves that there are just as many good people in the world as there are bad… his owners packed up a moving van and moved away. A few days later a neighbor noticed a cat sitting on the porch of the now vacant Cambridge apartment, waiting at its door. Being severe asthmatics, couldn’t take the kitty in. So they did the next best thing.

Oscar was found roaming around the north shore all by my lonesome self in the early springtime. I’m a healthy, friendly pit bull of 60 pounds. Although my head weighs most of that, it’s not because I have a hearty ego! I am one easy-going, down-to-earth boy. I’m happy no matter what- whether I’m jogging with you, or curled up on the couch.

Duke, a Mastiff mix who was found as a stray by local animal control. We think he is part Great Dane, but we cannot be sure of his breed because we do not know much about his history. The shelter had limited space, so Underdog ResQ stepped in to help. Duke is a gentle giant who weighs about 95 pounds. Duke is about 1 year old, so he still has some growing to do.

Dahlia is a young 8 month maybe a little younger brown tiger baby. She is an absolute doll. She may even have some Siamese in her because she is a bit cross eyed. She’s not crazy about being held but she is crazy about loving up against you and head butting. She loves to play and doesn’t mind dogs either.

Kylee is your basic shelter mutt. We think she’s a Doberman mix, but can’t be sure. She’s probably got four or five other breeds mixed in there. At three years-old, Kylee has energy but is well out of her puppy years. She loves to run and play, but she knows when to settle down. Shes great with dogs, cats, and small children (age 5+).

Maxwell is a bouncy, euphoric pup who loves to just run, play, sprint, sniff stuff, soak up attention… and repeat. At only six months old, Maxwell has tons of puppy energy left in him. We need Maxwell to go to an experienced dog owner because he becomes mouthy and can nip when he gets over-excited.

Boomer just wants to have fun! Boomer is a big, young, high-energy pit mix who will need an active household and plenty of exercise. Boomer loves to chase tennis balls, but only occasionally brings them back (hmmm). He’s very play and people focused and just loves to romp. This is a very fun-oriented dog.

Teaka is an extremely loveable and sweet, adult Lab mix. Teaka loves to be around people, but she’s not clingy. She’s extremely affectionate and loves both treats and deep shoulder scratches. Her energy levels are moderate. She’ll need exercise to stay trim, but not tons.
