health Reducing or replacing meat with plant-based foods is one of the best things you can do for your health. Every plant-based meal is a choice for better health. Many people report having more energy on plant-based food. You’ll also help protect yourself against the biggest killers: heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. Medical research shows that chicken, fish and eggs are linked to many health problems. Chicken, dairy, and eggs are packed with saturated fat. Recent studies have found that choosing plant-based foods can cut your risk of heart disease by as much as 32% and, if you’re under 65, can reduce your risk of death from
diabetes and cancer by up to 75%. Fish can also contain some cancer-causing chemicals like dioxins, arsenic, and mercury. Factory farms are also breeding grounds for disease. More than half of all antibiotics are used on farmed animals – increasing the risk of antibiotic resistant superbugs.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, people who ditch meat have:
lower body weight
less cancer
less heart disease
less diabetes
lower blood lower pressure cholesterol
lower overall mortality from disease

Swap out animal meat with plant-based ‘meats’. Visit the fridge and freezer sections of your local grocery store. You’ll find sausages, schnitzels, burgers, nuggets, mince, hot dogs and more – all meat-free! Every store has a different range (and some products are better than others) so try a few to discover your favourites.
Plant power Protein-packed plants Beans, lentils, nuts, plant-based ‘meats’, tofu, and whole grains are all great sources of protein to stay strong.
Iron is everywhere Leafy greens, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts and seeds, dried fruit, fortified breakfast cereals and wholemeal bread are great plant sources of iron. Supplements are also available for people who need them.
Eating out Restaurant chains are offering more meat-free meals than ever before. Subway, Grill’d, Sumo Salad, Nando’s, Guzman y Gomez and Domino’s Pizza have all added delicious plant-based options to their menus. Thai, Indian, Japanese, Mexican and Middle Eastern restaurants also offer tasty meat-free dishes. For more veg-friendly places to eat in your neighbourhood, check out HappyCow.net

Every meal is a choice about the world we want to live in. Plant-based meals aren’t just better for you. They’re better for everyone. We all know animals are individuals who think, feel and deserve kindness. We’ve all seen glimpses of the routine cruelty inside factory farms and slaughterhouses. A better world for animals is possible. Meet a few rescued individuals whose lives have been transformed by human kindness.

birds like Autumn are spared a life of misery each year by every person who replaces chicken with meat-free meals.
At just 30 days old, Autumn already carried the weight of an adult hen. Her underdeveloped legs could barely lift her massive body, but when she chirped you could hear she was only a baby. Like all ‘meat’ chickens, Autumn was born into a body that was designed to produce meat — not sustain life. Inside the overcrowded factory farm she grew up in, many of her companions died from heart failure before they were even 6 weeks old. Her rescuers knew that she would not likely survive long after being freed from that windowless shed. But unlike millions of ‘meat chickens’ before her, Autumn was spared the horror of the slaughterhouse. Instead, her final days were spent bathing in sunshine, discovering a love of watermelon, and bonding with her closest companion, fellow rescued hen, Summer at Lefty’s Place Sanctuary
This adventurous young rooster is very lucky to have hatched at Lefty’s Place Sanctuary. If he’d been one of the millions of unwanted boy chicks born into the egg industry each year, Popeye would have been tossed into a mincing machine (alive) or gassed to death on his first day of life.
A grouper fish destined for somebody’s dinner plate had a lucky escape when the chef at an Italian restaurant noticed her gasping for breath as he was about to put her into the oven. He took pity on her and released her back into the sea. Staff gave her the nickname Marta, and were all happy to see her returned to the ocean where she belongs.
Since we can live happy healthy lives without harming others,
why wouldn’t we?

If Dasher’s mother hadn’t escaped a pig farm while pregnant, Dasher (middle) and his siblings would have been trucked to slaughter at just six months old. But his mum did escape and Dasher and his siblings are safe at Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary, where they get to play, explore and live a full life.
