Animation, is, in a way, the act of ‘bringing to life’: the creative process through which an inanimate object acquires a name, a backstory and - most importantly- a purpose. Its malleable nature tends to enthrall our senses and turn ideas and facts into experiences and emotions. Besides the creative aspect of animation, there is an entire industry that thrives around it, creating bonds with filmmaking, television, gaming, advertising, education and so on. In this context, our top priority is to develop a financial toolbox in order to support the local audiovisual industry. The recent Law 4487/2017, that introduced a cash rebate support scheme for all audiovisual productions in Greece - including animation and video games- was only the beginning. Lefteris Kretsos Deputy Minister of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media
A new €916 million program for supporting SMEs and Startups through business loans from the Hellenic Fund for Entrepreneurship & Development (ETEAN S.A.) will soon be launched for audiovisual productions, while an Audiovisual Sector Guarantee Facility up to €25 millions will be available by the end of the year. Likewise, a specialized state Fund of Funds (VCs) of €50 million will soon support all investments in audiovisual production. But, when it comes to business we strongly believe in a culture of openness; in this context, along with Animasyros Festival, we put together Athens Animation Agora, for the purpose of bringing together industry professionals, producers and artists. The above steps are of critical importance for our local animation community to grow and strengthen its ties with the global audiovisual industry. And this is a mission we are committed to accomplish.

3A, Athens Animation Agora: what a great initiative by the talented Animasyros team! The Embassy of France and the French Institute of Greece have supported Animasyros festival for a long time. We appreciate its high quality. France has a prominent place in the field of animation and we are delighted to offer our support for the new innovation market that will be developed in Athens through our MAZINNOV Greek-French innovation network. This support is another proof of the close ties between France and Greece, which have actually strengthened during the financial crisis. The creation of an animation market in Greece is in itself an innovation. Christophe Chantepy Ambassador of France to Greece
We have no doubt it will become a success story! Our best wishes are with you!

Dear friends, The National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication – EKOME S.A. welcomes the 1st Athens Animation Agora (3A) at Animasyros Festival, this new and innovative network of professionals in the field of animation production, hosted by the Onassis Cultural Centre. EKOME S.A. supports and promotes all actions in the Greek audiovisual sector that are interlinked with its strategic mission:
• To promote the national audiovisual industry as one of the economy’s key development components, through the “cash rebate” scheme for boosting domestic and foreign audiovisual productions in Greece. Panos Kouanis President and CEO EKOME S.A.
• To operate as a centre for the national audiovisual and digital archives policy,
• and to develop a framework for promoting the audiovisual education of all citizens in the national and international scene. At EKOME S.A. we aim to play a constructive role in the business development of projects by focusing on the connection between the community and the industry and help them grow. Our goal is to set up a sustainable AV policy with a multitude of opportunities to professionals in the creative industry and thus, to inaugurate a new era in the Greek audiovisual sector. This is why, we are happy to support the 11th edition of Animasyros International Animation Festival + Agora and look forward to its success.

“Anima”, as in soul. “Syros”, as in island. Animasyros isn’t just an international animation festival. It’s a unique encounter between cultures and creative people of all ages, a vibrant forum for ideas and techniques in an idyllic setting. It’s not just for kids, and it’s not just for animation fans or professionals. Its combination of films and workshops, open dialogues and parallel events is powerful enough to initiate even those with little or no experience of animation. Children and adults, locals and citizens of the whole world make—or renegotiate—their acquaintance with this most human of inventions that has the power to make the static dynamic; with this art that animates cut-outs with our sensitivities and our sensibilities, our angst and our joy, giving them a soul. Onassis Culture and Animasyros, side by side for another year. Because at the Onassis Foundation, we do our best to bring about unexpected encounters. Because we’re interested in the new realities of animated film. Because it’s our goal to release potential, and at Animasyros we’ve met creators capable of giving animations a life of their own that’s every bit as vibrant and interesting as ours. And because, we were all children once. So what’s not to like about an international festival which presents the favourite cinematic genre of our early years to us anew, only this time round it talks to us about the things that concern us today: about democracy and equality, freedom of speech and thought, about the vision of a better -and never static- life.

Cameo Gums live in Cameo World, a microplanet-spaceship that travels in the Earth’s atmosphere hidden by an artificial cloud. They fly down to big cities of the world to rescue new Cameo Gums. Eleni Mouri Assistant Professor GR EU The communication forms which have been developed based on the animation techniques, with the help of technology, lead animation art to new dynamics. On the one hand, the collaboration of animation with live cinema for the creation of fiction movies. They create fictional worlds that help fiction and symbols, which are promoted through narration. On the other hand, the development of animation is in common course with graphic design. It started with the creation of combined picture movement and typography. Today Motion Graphics and Informative Animation lead more and more creators from the printed, to the electronic visual communication. At the department of Graphic Design and Visual Communication we are teaching the aesthetic and the narration of animation on those three models. E mourye@teiath.gr W youtube.com/teianima

Panos Iosifelis Associate Professor, Head of School of Film, Faculty of Fine Arts GR EU Animation in Greece is evolving as a paradox. While it may constitute a medium of expression, particularly preferred by young people, creators, there is little infrastructure for its development, and at the same time the equivalent education is in a great measure fragmentary. The School of Film Studies of Faculty of Fine Arts of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has debuted a collaboration with Animasyros Festival. Our first goal is to create a strong educational center, followed by the development of infrastructure for the creation of animation, through collaboration with other bodies. And while it can be perceivable that usually the direction is the opposite way (from the Universities and the Production to the Festivals) and that we follow a paradoxical way, that’s exactly why we believe that under these circumstances this collaboration is particularly beneficial and will pave the way for the art of animation in Greece. Panos Iosifelis is a Thessaloniki based screenwriter, Associate Professor –Head of School of Film, Faculty of Fine Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and of the Master Degree Program in Screenwriting of UWM and AUTH. His work includes scripts for several feature and short films, documentaries and tv series. E pan7774@yahoo.com W auth.gr/en/film
