SUPERSIZE YOUR SPACE WITH OUR TOP TIPS AND CLEVER DESIGN TRICKS TO MAKE THE SMALLEST OF ROOMS FEEL PERFECTLY PROPORTIONED. While the heart of the home is thought to be the kitchen, isn’t it fair to say the living room is where we spend the most time relaxing? It’s therefore key to create a space that’s both comforting and practical in equal measure. Smart small living room ideas ensure there is no wasted space in a compact living space. From thoughtful furniture placement and genius ways with paint to savvy curtain tricks there’s a whole host of smart ideas to make your small living room feel bigger than it actually is.When you are redecorating, one of the easiest ways to make a small snug area feel more spacious is to inject soft, neutral shades into your to keep the room warm and inviting. //image via www.homestolove.com.au/ ww May - June 2021 Edition//Design Essentia//DE INDIA |

How to plan and decorate your living room? A good starting point is to think about how many people you need to fit in your living room on a regular basis. This will help you to choose the right living room furniture. Take inspiration from our gallery of beautiful small space designs and tips beow to unlock the potential of your perfect living room space:

(1) USE OF A FEATURE WALL We all want our living rooms to feel cosy and restful. However, in a small space, you may feel apprehensive about introducing too many dark colours for fear of making the room feel cramped. In that instance, pick a rich warm colour like this plum shade as a backdrop to a part of the room that’s all about relaxation. Behind the sofa is ideal. That deep shot of colour is a visual ‘hug’ that relaxes and draws us in, without making the room feel smaller. (pn left) // photo courtesy : Studio Ashby, London

(2)

USE OF MIRRORS Using mirrors is two-fold in style purpose – the mirror creates an eye-catching focal point as well as visually expanding the space. You can instantly create the illusion of space by simply adding more mirrors. All the better still, like above, opt for an over-sized mirror to cover an entire wall. The mirror will create the illusion of space by reflecting light and of course the interior decor – doubling up your interior space. Try keeping the colour palette light and airy to aid the overall effect. (on left) //photograph by Evan Joseph Photography

(3)

REPLACE SOFA WITH A SMALL SNUGGLER OR LOUNGER A bulky sofa can eat up living room space quickly, so if you have an especially tiny room, ask yourself if you could manage with an equally comfy but far less invasive ‘snuggler’ or ‘loveseat’. Otherwise known as a 1.5 seater, it can easily accommodate a parent and child – or a cuddly couple. (on right) //photo courtesy cou : www.sofa.com

(4)

CONCEAL MEDIA CENTRE A wall-mounted TV is always going to be the better option for small living rooms. Firstly we don’t want it taking up valuable space. Secure your modern flatscreen to the wall to create a streamlined look, freeing up the space beneath where you would otherwise have to accommodate a TV stand. Look for smart ways to disguise your TV to prevent it standing out as point of focus. Cleverly concealing the large black oblong, that looks like a black hole, will help to stop it encroaching on a small space. (on left) //photograph www.delightfull.eu

(5) USE OF OTTOMONS Using mirrors is two-fold in style purpose – the mirror creates an eye-catching focal point as well as visually expanding the space. You can instantly create the illusion of space by simply adding more mirrors. All the better still, like above, opt for an over-sized mirror to cover an entire wall. (6)

SMART STORAGE AS HOME DECOR If you are faced with small space living the only way really is up! Make the most of any floor space by keeping it as clutter-free as possible. That includes any small bits and bobs you might otherwise have laying around. We have used attractive willow baskets to solve the storage problem. Ideal because one they look great and two they are sturdy enough to hold all manner of clutter – a savvy living room storage idea. (on left) //photograph : Joanna Henderson

(7)

EFFICIANT COZY CORNERS Before decorating or furnishing an awkwardly shaped living room consider how best to optimise the corner space available.Think about an L-shaped sofa in a tight eaves space teamed with trunks that can function as coffee tables as well as handy storage. Keep a dark room white to make the most of what little light there is. (on right) //photograph : David Giles

(8) LIGHT COLOURED WALLS Our current favourites for light colours for walls are blush pinks, pale blue/greys and dusky lilacs. Lighter coloured shades will make any small living room feel fresh and inviting – cosy, and yet not closed in. Steer clear of brilliant whites and instead pick those with a subtle green, grey or taupe tone. (on right) //photograph : Dominic Blackmore //photogr

| May - June 2021 Edition//Design Essentia//DE INDIA

(9)

REPLACE CURTAINS WITH BLINDS Our design advice for small spaces is to ditch the curtains and go for blinds instead.‘Often people focus on something which really doesn’t need to be changed. We suggests it can be as simple as changing a few little tiny things to make all the difference. Such as the curtains. When working with a challenging small bay window with dark curtains hanging either side we advice to would put blinds up rather than curtains, which would actually make the room seem taller. What a great insider design tip to help make any small space feel instantly larger. The free space either side of the windows would create the illusion of airy wind space. So simple, yet so brilliant. (on right) //photo via www.onlinerolgordijnen.nl

(10) EMBRACE THE DAYLIGHT Whenever designing your space, ensure to keep the space well lit. Huge windows or skylights in a space can ensure good well lit interiors creating a fresh indoor environment and also shall keep your house energy efficient in a long run. Using light minimal colour schemes for your interior palette shall help in making the space more well lit and bigger than the usual. usual (on left) //photograph via www.ourspacefurniture.com

DH DHRUVKANT & JALPA : The 'Abhir Chair' is an extension of the love for craftsmanship and the camaraderie between materials and art forms. While we are proud of the mastery our artisans have on natural teakwood, we cannot stop admiring the kaarigari of the weavers of Kutchh in bespoke cotton textiles. Spotlight Interview ARTHUR CASAS

a brazilian b architect with offices in Sao Paulo and NewYork who is well known for his works inTokyo, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, NewYork and São Paulo, creating a vocabulary that is recognized and published internationally. DE Editor in chief Anirudh Datta had a detailed interaction with the internationally acclaimed architect for the DE Spotlight interview series where Arthur talks about his design journey and shares his latest residential projects for our “beautiful homes edition”-The TP Apartment in Paris, France and the JY House in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

ARTHUR CASAS

(PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT AT STUDIO ARTHUR CASAS) (SAO PAULO - NEW YORK)

architecture & design magazine

#DEspotlight // cover story By ANIRUDH DATTA

DESIGN ESSENTIA MAGAZINE//DEINDIA

From the object to the landscape, inside out, the creative process of Studio Arthur Casas is intimately connected to a horizontal scale, where the main concern is the dialogue in the conception of programs that can be as diverse as a chair or an entire neighborhood, influenced by a spirit both modernist and contemporary that is brazilian but also cosmopolitan. “Our creative process assumes that in architecture the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts. it is the quality of the whole that permeates, controls and affects every detail of our design. therefore, our attention is directed to all scales, from architecture to furniture, from the smallest of the objects to the choice of all the materials used. the perception of the environments happens totally, not only with our eyes, but with all our senses, our bodies and our emotions. emotion ” says Arthur.

AD : WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN? AC : There are children who create computer programmes, others write books, I would design houses. In 1973, at only 12, I conceived my first project, a child’s play. First, there was no specific client. Part of the architecture is about Pa establishing a dialogue with the person who you are designing to. I made up the programme, the client and the plot. But architecture is also about observation, and we pay attention to what interests us, especially when we are kids.

AD : WHO WERE YOUR EARLY DESIGN HEROES AND ROLE MODELS? AC : I look up to Frank Lloyd Wright, for his inherent command of scale and his unwavering commitment to applying it at each stage of a project’s completion.

AD : TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY IN THE INCEPTION OF STUDIO ARTHUR CASAS. AC : The Expo 2015 Brazil pavilion was a project that made Studio be recognized internationally, as well as the Emiliano Hotel in Rio de Janeiro.,Brazil. The Studio's projects are based on human beings and their needs, as well as the search for the best possible relation with the landscape. Architecture is born in symbiosis with the interior design and the real scale of contemporary furniture, considering routes and, rationally, optimizing the occupation of a space.

AD : BEING FROM SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, IS THERE ANY SPECIFIC STYLE OF ARCHITECTURE YOU LOVE TO FOLLOW THAT REPRESENTS YOUR CITY AND COUNTRY?

AD : YOU’RE MOST PROUD - FAVORITE PROJECT TILL NOW? ANYTHING SPECIFIC YOU LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT THIS PROJECT THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL FOR YOU?

AC : I grew up in São Paulo, in a neighborhood full of trees that, unlike the massive majority of the city, was entirely planned. I spent my childhood going through the winding streets of Alto da Lapa, in the west zone, redoing the route imagined by the urban planners of Companhia City, a company based in London and that for a long time was an absolute reference in urban planning for São Paulo residents. This, perhaps, was my first contact with a foreign vision of how spaces could be thought and planned.

AC : The house that I designed for my family, 17 years ago on the beach, was a game changer - a moment of revival for authorial architecture in Brazil.

AD : IN FEW WORDS, HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR DESIGN PROCESS – PHILOSOPHY? AC : Humanism is the basis of my work, I am always the main character of my projects. I’ve got to be happy in the spaces I create - it’s for this purpose that I understand architecture. The Studio reflects and translates the uniqueness of customers into architecture. By internalizing customers / users, we create an architecture tailored to them, on demand, which best meets tailo their needs and lifestyle.

AD : TELL US SOMETHING YOU REALLY LIKED ABOUT YOUR LATEST PROJECT “THE TP APARTMENT” IN PARIS? AC : In the TP Apartment in Paris, I like the way the original structure of the apartment was preserved in its original aspect while also connecting the social area that has the living room, the dining room and the kitchen. The furniture was carefully chosen to delimit each area, defining the layout. There are also hand-pic hand-picked art pieces that complete the finishing of the project. //below; The TP Apartment in Paris, France. TP APARTMENT Located on one of the most elegant streets of Paris, where the major fashion stores and art galleries are concentrated, this apartment signed by Arthur Casas, co- authored by architect Marina Werfel, was designed to fulfill the wishes of the residents - a couple with two children - for practical, integrated spaces so they can welcome friends and accommodate a family life. The project’s biggest challenge was to connect the environments and, at the same time, respect the conditions of the building, adapting to the limitations imposed by the original structure of the apartment, which was preserved in its original aspect. The social area brings together, in the same environment, the living room, the dining room and the kitchen. In order to delimit each area, the furniture was arranged so it could define the project’s layout. The monochromatic palette and materiality guarantee the aesthetic harmony of this space. For the finishing, preferences were for wood textures and for the use of iron in natural tones. Furniture and art pieces were chosen along with the client - much of it was searched and selected in Paris. Among the highlights, there are different sofas, arranged to bring balance to the environment; and the custom-made stool placed behind the sofa, serving as an object support or as a seating for any dining room meeting. AD : TELL US SOEMTHING ABOUT ONE OFYOUR FAVORITE HOUSES YOU DESIGNED RECENTLY? AC : That would be the JY House in Porto Feliz, Brazil. The integration of interior and exterior is beautiful, as if the landscape was being brought into the house. The two displaced volumes also provide an interesting architectural character to the house. The house is also sustainable, which is a very important aspect to the Studio.

AD : THIS EDITION IS ABOUT CELEBRATING THE ESSENCE OF OUR HOMES, STAYING INDOORS SAFE IN THIS PANDEMIC MADE US CONNECT WITH OUR HOMES MORE THAN EVER. EVER HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR PROCESS TO DESIGN A RESIDENCE THAT TRANSFORMS THE LIVING OF THE RESIDENT? AC : I've noticed that what has changed was the fact that people understand have understood how healthy it is to live adequately, with beauty and comfort. At the beginning of the pandemic I thought our field would go through a moment of deep recession, but we have never, and I am being very honest, we've never been so busy. Everyone with some financial backing in Brazil and outside is investing in the quality of their homes like never before. The family has never coexisted so much and so intensely as in this period. My creative process assumes that, in architecture, the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts. The quality of the whole is a consequence of the care given to all the details of our design. For this reason, my attention is directed to all scales, from the building to the furniture. furnitu The Studio's projects are harmonious and generate empathy. We think about the projects taking into account the experience that the client will have in the space. Our architecture is designed to enhance the experience of those who will enjoy it. 38

AD : HOW HAVE YOU BEEN COPING UP WITH THIS LOCKDOWN TO STAY CREATIVE AT HOME? HOW WAS THIS AT HOME EXPERIENCE WITH FAMILY? SS : Its been really hard staying creative at home, but thankfully my team has been extremely supportive and we have had a lot of fun all together in this lockdown brainstorming. The first lockdown was almost easier, there was a sense of optimism, this time around with lockdown 2.0; I am feeling a real lack of positivity all around, so as a studio we are trying our best to motivate each other as much as possible and focus on churning out the best designs we have ever done.

AD : YOUR LATEST RESIDENTIAL INTERIORS PARK BY LODHA, MUMBAI. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROJECT. SS : When we saw this home for the first time it looked exactly like any other builder finished apartment. While it was a three bedroom house all of the rooms seemed extremely small and extremely cramped. We were wondering what we could do to make sure that this house looked completely individual and completely unique to all of the other hundreds of apartments that were there in the same complex. we Our client is the owner of Bharat tiles, and we really wanted to find a way to include his beautiful tiles into the design of the space. For the living room area we used terrazzo with brass accents in the flooring. For the daughters bedroom we used a colourful hexagon flooring with a floating bed from the ceiling. For the sons bedroom we use accents of grey red and white which are all of his favourite colours. For the master bedroom we used a custom-made did as a headboard which we pasted onto the wall and which was made specially for this project in black and white terrazzo with a wood flooring. While the apartment is extremely small we would like to think that we have made it look spacious bright colourful and have a lot of elements of fun within the space.

AD : WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN ELEMENT OF THIS HOME? SS : I love the maximisation of space in

what is a very small apartment layout. //Park by Lodha, Mumbai by Essajees Atelier Photographer: TALIB CHITTALWALA

AD : THE WORLD IS NOW SLOWLY REALIZING THE SERIOUSNESS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE IN INTERIOR DESIGN TODAY? HOW CAN ONE ACHIEVE AND CONTRIBUTE TO IT WITH RESPECT TO INTERIOR DESIGN AS DESIGNERS? SS : The problem in our industry is that there are a lot of materials that are not sustainable that are predmoniantly available and those that are sustainable are perceived as more expensive. As a whole, every single material and the entire industry needs to go through an overhaul where the selling or use of such materials should be completely banned. complete The need of the hour is to move towards a greener way to build homes, and if there are so few restrictions or regulations on what is sold and available then consumers tend to go for what is cheapest or most readily available and that is a large issue. check out full project & interview on www.designessentiamagazine.com May - June 2021 Edition//Design Essentia//DE INDIA |

creen House, is located in an urban lot of 3000 sqft in a well-connected area in New Delhi, India. Designed by Spaces Architects@ka led by principal architect Kapil Aggarwal. The brief was to design a home for 6 members including two kids. The proposal intends to contribute to the built environment by intervening in space. The residence has buildings on three sides of the plot, so the solution was a strategically planned outward-looking interior space with required privacy created by the usage of louvers lou and screens this resulted in good internal connectivity and also provides interactive spaces for the family with maximum daylight into the interior spaces. architecture & design magazine

The house has been divided into three zones where the ground and first houses the private rooms, the second floor is a semi-private area with a connected terrace and the third floor consists of a terrace for recreational purposes. The ground g floor is presented as a stimulating space that allows a great variety of activities. On the ground floor, the family social area is developed in an integrated space with the living room, the kitchen, the dining room and a double-height drawing room with the idea of being immersed in one total space. A set of the superimposed metal staircase stai with a contrasting combination of wood and brass allows us to explore and understand the spatiality of the building leading to the next floors where the bedrooms are located, ending with a terrace that reclaims the views of the neighborhood. The Elevation comprises wooden pieces that make up the screening of the house that plays an important role in expressing the composition of the facade, resolving the security and privacy of the house and giving rise to the play of light and shadow creating an atmosphere of warmth. The proposal is materialized with an independent structure structu of exposed wooden battens with an abstract concrete block railing. Finished with a modern interior, the contrast between luxurious marble, warm timber, brass, and colors evoke a timeless and modern atmosphere. All the walls are majorly planned in monochrome and splashes of colors have been added with bright colors in artwork and furniture. The architectural style of the house is designed to reflect the owner’s character and lifestyle. Talking about interiors the language is modern contemporary and minimalistic. The look needed to be upbeat and timeless, yet refreshingly modernistic. “We were very clear about the material palette from day one.We have used warm and earthen tones in form of teak wood, brass, browns in furnishings and greys on walls. All the common connected spaces have uniform theme going everywhere but individual rooms has a character of its own as per the personality whomsoever is using it.The lower level has all public spaces like the living room, kitchen, dining, pooja and the other related services. Staircase (on left) area has been placed almost in the center of the house along with a big scale opening, so that all floors can be evenly illuminated with natural light. A bespoke art piece has been installed in the center part of it that speaks about restoring our cultural values. And it is totally casted in liquid value metal. As one enters the foyer the inside space bifurcates into the large living room area with two seating zones. Highlighted with vibrant hues of dark sofa, chairs, abstract painting and the ample sunlight diffusing through sheer curtains outlines the double height living room into a lively space with overall white background. The passage at times mellows down to provide a singular enormous seating area. A sense of expansiveness is established by the seemingly seamless Italian marble flooring all over the indoor spaces. The staircase stai acts as a divider between dining and living areas, with puja room on opposite side. The puja room is kept minimal and cultural outlook by intricate detail pattern engraved in marble that act as a backdrop to a monolith stand for the idol. Following the white theme of the house, the kitchen is also designed likewise. The clean line white cabinets merges with the background backg with prominent royal blue cabinet in the composition, redefines the idea of modern kitchen.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR STUDIO’S DESIGN PHILOSOPHY? FLYINGSEEDS : Being nature lover and avid travelers,We consciously integrate architecture and Nature together as an ever-evolving idea based on relevant profuse factors every project has to offer, However, May call it progressive contemporary architecture where we follow distinct perspectives to whe understand the real concerns connected to the deeper realms of people and place. We are enthused to create breathable buildings where natural light penetrates deep to accentuate the quality of the spaces and use the material pallet of concrete, brick, steel, stone wood etc in their most intrinsic form to intensify and celebrate the visual and tactile sense. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROJECT? WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT BEHIND ITS DESIGN INCEPTION? FLYNGSEEDS : “THE PAVILION HOUSE" is located in Bhilai,Chhattisgarh. The brief was to design a new contemporary house next to the existing, with the open garden all to it.This new house belongs primarily to the new Generation, two young boys who were about to start sta their own family soon. The Family being affable and social, always believed in meeting and hosting community gatherings often in their own premises, hence we were aspired to ideate a zestful, young Contemporary Indian house nestled within the nature, dedicated for recreational pursuit! To start with,The Ground floor level was conceived concei as a free flowing open layout with blurred boundaries between the interconnected spaces, which eventually could act as one big public space when needed. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN ELEMENT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROJECT? FLYINGSEEDS : Both the house (Existing & New) units been intentionally connected with an axial wall, which originates from the existing house, Once in the entrance lounge, this free standing wall is the main guiding axis travelling throughout the length diving the footprint into 3 equal rectangular zones - Living, Living Common area and Private ends at the center of pool . The Fragmental Wall, as we call it, is the transition element, made out of indigenous limestone, articulated with strategic openings creating flexible open layout for free movement, Connecting all the public spaces, the Living, Green court, Drawing room and Common lobby, as suited for gathering. On the south end of the Pool sits the secluded entity ‘The Pavilion’ overlooking the pool. The glass Pavilion has been envisaged as the tranquil recreation hub of the house, floating above the pool, is the final destination of all the movement routes at ground floor level.

live, work and play. Design plays the most important role in the efficiencyof this physical shield that we call home and is solely responsible for the emotional and physical well-being of its residents. The three aspects that should be carefully curated in a home design are the spatial configuration, the connection with the outdoor and the materials and finishes used in the interiors. Firstly, spatial configuration should cater to the functional diversity within a family such that it intelligently blurs the private niches into the larger space. Secondly, careful placement of windows and skylights will ensure the adequate quality of light and Second ventilation. The affinity to nature- biophilia can be achieved by incorporating courtyards, backyards, verandahs and balconies topped with greens. Finally, studies show that organic and calm interiors increase the comfort levels. Earthy materials like wood, natural stones and textures, sand and mud can be beneficial for long term indoor stays. While there is no definitive guideline to a perfect home, the design features should suit the unique personality of the occupants, which brings happiness and promotes health. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROJECT? WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT BEHIND ITS DESIGN INCEPTION? KAAVYA : “TINKERBELL KA FARMHOUSE" is located in Bakaram, Moinabad,Telengana. It was quite a challenge to bring back English country-style architecture with modern amenities. This is a nice English cottage with pristine white colors and floral tapestry. The client requirements were very specific –spacious, cozy corners, with vintage, vintag clean, and crisp design,This project is something that we are extremely proud of. The entire house is built to be as spacious as possible, with a large front porch and an open-air deck.As you cross the expansive gardens onto the porch and through the stone paving, you are greeted into the sprawling verandah. Entire interiors comprises predominantly white walls and ceilings, a little bit of blue is also incorporated in the upholstery and flooring to create c an interesting contrast. The pristine white theme evokes the sense of gorgeous Victorian-era mansions. We see a client’s sudden shift of choice of living in villas over apartments and also community living over independent or standalone homes. HOWWOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR PROCESSTO DESIGN A PERFECT HOMETHATTRANSFORMSTHE LIVING OFTHE RESIDENT? ESI : Home is a place where people want to feel very comfortable and relaxed and hence it is very important for us to design a home that reflects the client’s personality. When clients hire a designer they put a lot of hope in us and wait for a long time until they see their dreams come true. The residential spaces in Mumbai are becoming smaller in per square footage and hence it is very necessary for us to design homes that are convertible and that can be used for multiple purposes. When a client gets multiple usage out of a space it accommodates more and more requirements.According to us the key to design a perfect per home is to fulfil and accommodate all the requirement and aspirations of a client and blend it with our design process to give a satisfactory outcome. Due to Covid, people have been spending most of their times in their homes and hence it is important for them to feel happy and content with the outcome of the design that is functionally efficient. There has always been a debate on the quote “Form Follows Function or Function Follows Form” but we believe that it is very vital to strike a perfect balance of form and function in order to make a design successful.
