He might be alluding to the eternal life through this. These characters carry sounds, and I must repeat, sound is life. We breathe and a sound reverberates. The letters of Devanagari script painted by Charan Sharma on canvas, in a continuum, create a unique visual appeal, and ignite a kinship with its origins. Here one may recall that since the earliest times, letters and characters have not only been a vehicle of communication among people from different times, geographies, or civilizations, but also times were sanctified as a link to the divine. So we may realize once again that apart from their daily uses, the character sets belong to a high-order understanding of man’s intellectual and creative powers—which aptly reflects in these paintings in a way that aesthetically speaks to our mind and senses, while also being capable of touching our spiritual cho chords.

//Skew House THOUGHT PARALLELS

//Cover Story

Thought parallels architecture with its Skew House overlooking the lush rubber plantation in Malapuram district, Kerala. By Design Essentia Magazine Photographer: Prashant Bhat

Thought Parallels an

architecture studio from Calicut, Kerala, designs the retreat in Malapuram district, Kerala. Driving through winding narrow roads in Malapuram district in Kerala, brings us to the site overlooking lush rubber plantation, which is abundantly grown in and around gradual slopes, camouflaging the house from plain view. vie Spread over an acre of land is the house which has a modern tropical design amalgamated with traditional architecture.

The design of the house utilizes the extents of the plot exceedingly well by having a spread out planning. The Design accommodates the brief of the Family which was to create distinctive guest and family spaces. This clearly leads to the formation of two blocks a guest and family.

20//Design Essentia Newsletter Edition//September 2019/Part II

NIKHIL MOHAN - Principal Architect and SHABNA NIKHIL - Creative Director // Thought Parallels

Connected with each other by a semi-private living. The guest block houses a guest living, a prayer room and a guest bedroom arranged in a linear form. The presence of the prayer room prompted the architect to align the block along the traditional direction of pray, thus creating a tilt and breaking the initial parallel axis between the two blocks, hence deriving the name “THE SKEW HOUSE.

Design Essentia Newsletter Edition//September 2019/Part II//21

Views of the minimalistic horticulture combining both hard and soft paving around the house from every room is another dimension added to the design. Rooms are well lit and aerated with large open spaces around. The subtle slope of the traditional styled Mangalore tile roof makes the entrance verandah and inner spaces well proportioned in terms of height. The connecting semi-private living is a cozy space with doorways leading into the landscape on either side. On entering the family block through the connecting semi-private living, one is welcomed by a large living and dining. The linear arrangement of spaces continues with the placing of the staircase followed by 2 bedrooms on one side and a kitchen and other utility spaces on the opposite end. The linearity in the arrangement of spaces brings in natural illumination and ventilation. Wooden, steel, and exposed concrete, open riser staircase leads upwards to the first floor. An element by itself, the staircase has a steel railing with a traditional wood carving pattern cut into it which is a subtle but impactful addition. Located on the first floor are 2 bedrooms and a linear pool. The south-facing facade of the bedroom and corridor leading to the bedrooms have been adorned by louvered openable shutters to keep out the harsh glare and heat from the south but creating a dramatic play of light all along the corridor and bedroom floor and walls. The use of traditional Mangalore roof tile roof along with an inner lining of plywood helps in insulating the rooms from the harsh summer heat. The material palette has been kept very minimal with steel, wood and exposed concrete as the primary materials. Few elements such as exposed clay brick walls and natural mosaic marble flooring add value to the quality of spaces.

//Ksheer Sagar RAVISH MEHRA DEEPAK KALRA

Ksheer Sagar, A Varanasi inspired analogous color palette based retail design by RMDK, New Delhi. By Design Essentia Magazine Photographer: Vibhor Yadav

Ksheer Sagar a retail store designed by New Delhi based design studio RMDK Ravish Mehra Deepak Kalra;

Being a well-established and highly trusted brand, originally housed within the busy lanes of the ancient city of Varanasi, Ksheer Sagar wanted to mark its presence as a heady mix of cultural and culinary heritage for its first outlet in a metropolitan city like Delhi. This changing identity called for strategic planning and design to create a modern, innovative and futuristic yet sustainable fashion.

24//Design Essentia Newsletter Edition//September 2019/Part II

Deeply rooted in heritage, the store is designed as an elegant indulgence into the old-world charm. A wide array of materials, colors and textures have been nimbly translated into a humble yet luxurious ambience. A Varanasi inspired analogous color palette and use of naturally sourced materials complement the products on display while also adding warmth and a homely comfort to the space. Ksheer Sagar truly celebrates the quirks of a luxurious international retail experience brought together in an Indian context to perfectly reflect the changing taste and face of a younger India. The traditional jaali motif has been reinterpreted into a clean geometric pattern for the chic metal ceiling panel, adding a nostalgic touch within a modern context. The patterned floor tiles, also a derivative of traditional Indian motifs, highlight the feature display area to create a strong visual harmony by bringing out a strong contrast amongst otherwise very solid and minimal surfaces. Design Essentia Newsletter Edition//September 2019/Part II//25

Aimed at reimagining the brand’s heritage in a simple, contemporary language for a global appeal, Ksheer Sagar finds a perfect balance between the old and the new to create a rich new precedent in the contemporary luxury.

Cafe Eleven 11 in Ahmedabad by Saniya Kantawala Design shows a lot of drama with play of basic shapes and colours. By Design Essentia Magazine Photographer: Vivek Shah

The restaurant-cafĂŠ has been established with unique seating spaces evolving into an Kantawala Design. engaging space. Eleven 11 derives the label from the design scheme The idea has been kept very elementary, the space adorned with a play of basic shapes it follows, portraying dual possibilities of the same elements in a space, such that the interpretation of and colours. A lot of drama can be seen due to this. the interior retains its character and essence.

30//Design Essentia Newsletter Edition//September 2019/Part II

The entry is at a point in the restaurant where the guests stand facing a horizontal division of the space, imbued with a spectacular use of colour. It exposes the exciting elements of design, furniture and seating styles to the guests. The flow of movement seamlessly directs the guests to the right, towards the counter and the mocktail bar area. To the left of the entrance, the restaurant fashions a booth seating, a long table along with bar height wooden chairs and also a three-level amphitheatre-styled step seating. The latter, with its pop-up cushions and a polished wooden finish, adds abundantly to the dynamics of the spatial design.

//Image on right Moving ahead of the counter, an upheaval of the space animates the ambience with delirium, imitating the 90’s American diners. Design Essentia Newsletter Edition//September 2019/Part II//31

Further, to the left in the space, an observer would find a wooden partition of the volume with glazed capsule shaped cut-outs. The partition modules are reproduced in six, three for each colour division. On the other side of the partition is another seating area, secluded, with wide windows on two sides allowing ample daylight, if need be. This space has been specially crafted for patrons to relax and unwind, with plush seating and impressive rich teak wood used for table legs. It has been influenced by the alfresco style of European cities. To make it coherent, the space is embellished with plenty of planters, hanging from the ceiling and others around the windows. The complete interior instils a certain style and degree of symmetry evident throughout the volume. Working around the theme of divide, the materials like ply and pine veneers-hardwood, posed a challenge to constitute perfect vertical symmetry. The furniture layout facilitated this as evident in the seating spaces thereabouts of the entrance. The bar is divided with handcrafted wooden carved ply and veneer planks. One observes a bold divide in the tables placed in the centre as they have both these finishes on them, in terms of colour scheme.

Eleven 11 has different kinds of seating throughout the space, it is pleasant, vibrant and warm. The addition of a convivial amphitheatre-styled step seating with plug points for every seat so that students and professionals can work out of a casual cosy little area on their devices. Above the stepped-seating, there are beautiful blown glass drop lights hanging, minimalist in design, while, the bar counter is decked with artistically laid-out globular white tinted luminaries. With the geometric patterns, fabric textures and majorly with the use of colours, the restaurant-cafĂŠ at the first instance projects visual divisions. Oxymoronic may it sound, but, with the movement and experience of the space, the divisions, progressively, of all sorts find their harmony in the contrast. This broadly serves the design intent and profoundly creates the imagery of cohesion of all the elements of

Apical Reform’s Betula Chair is a sheer example of fluid decontructivism pleasing aesthetics and comfort. By Design Essentia Magazine Photographer: Anil Patel

//Betula Apical Reform

APICAL REFORM

Designer Description: The chair, a sinuous structure made entirely out of birch ply, is an example of fluid decontructivism that is pleasing aesthetically and comforting ergonomically. The fluid form of the Betula was derived from a functional posture and the idea of continuity of the lines. The technique of layering is one of the key factors that adds to the aura of the chair and further beautifies the the form. Smooth flowing lines run along the form to give the impression of giving rise to a cantilevered, sculptured structure that is also pleasing to the eyes.

38//Design Essentia Newsletter Edition//September 2019/Part II

Concealed within the simple form of the chair is the meticulously resolved stability and comfort. The technique and the assembly involves an understanding of the overall form and the material used. Precision in alignment was one of the most crucial factors involved in the entire process. Birch Ply was used as a material as it was part of an exploration that were carried out with this material. The ideation for this project remains ongoing with further resolved prototypes under development.
