The best of
Milan Design Week 2021 Milan's furniture and design fair returns!!
Ciao, ‘SUPER SALONE’
Billed as , the world’s biggest annual furniture fair Salone del Mobile returned to Milan for the MILAN DESIGN WEEK after the 2020 edition was cancelled due to coronavirus. It was the 60th edition of the renowned furniture fair, which was supposed to take place in April 2020, but was rescheduled twice and then cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.t This edition of Salone del Mobile is curated by architect Sefano Boeri. This year's Salone del Mobile is conceived as a large design library. Boeri has said that the trade show’s traditional format of individual booths for brands will be replaced by displays arranged on vertical modular walls designed by architect Andrea Caputo. Designers architects, and design enthusiates Designers, reunited to peruse showrooms and revel in new collections, some of which had been secreted away since 2020. The design houses delivered, from Dior's fabulous display of Louis XVI chairs and Hermès's artistic textile display to Artemest's curated commissions of water-inspired objects to many more exciting collections. Below is our favorite design moments from Salone del Mobile 2021. Saluti!

DIOR MEDALLION CHAIR In 1947 Christian Dior selected a Louis XVI-style chair to seat guests at his atelier and the chair has become a signature of the house ever since. This year, Dior commissioned 17 artists and designers, including Pierre Yovanovitch, India Mahdavi, Studio Dimore, Nendo, and Nacho Carbonell to re-imagine the Louis XVI design. The resulting collection is a beautiful homage to not only the house of Dior, but of the architectural value of the simple chair. photographer : ALESSANDRO GAROFALO
HERMÈS In a particularly cerebral display by Hervé Sauvag at La Pelota, Hermès filled huge volumes with hand-embroidered rugs, a paper mache-inspired chair by Studio Mumbai, and wooden furniture by Jasper Morrison, among other domestic delights. photographer : MAXIME VERRET

ARMANI / CASA Is barbecue with Giorgio Armani a reality or a pandemic fever dream? Both. The designer's new collection for Armani/Casa was inspired by Armani's life in lockdown and celebrates being outdoors and having fun at home. This included an Armani-designed barbecue set, gym accessories, a picnic blanket-turned-chess board, and, naturally, a bar cabinet replete with mother of pearl wrapped in a Japanese tatami-like covering. photograph courtesy : ARMANI CASA
CASSINA Cassina's new collections were designed by a veritable roll call of who's who in the design world—Michael Anastassiades, Jeffrey Bernett, Philippe Starck—alongside never-before-seen reissues of designs from Charlotte Perriand. Shown here is Soriana from Tobia Scarpa in a punchy clementine hue. photograph courtesy : CASSINA

Introducing DE Products - our product platform specially for architectural and interior design products by DE India A new entrant in the Indian art space who works under her own, independent label -
‘FOUND byAanshiki’
Artist and designer AANSHIKI MITTAL Inspi by the 70yr old artform of Kutum Katam, Inspired her work simply tries to create a contemporary rendition of it. Marked with a complete absence of straight lines, the work tends to preserve the natural contours of the ‘FOUND’ wooden pieces while augmenting it with the subtlest of artistic touches in an attempt to add a degree of refinement and attach an element of finality to nature’ natu s hidden messages. The result is a one-of-a-kind, genre-defining piece, with each piece having its own message for its recipient to decipher and embrace.“With subtle undertows of sustainability, my artistic expression is not confined to a single canvas & often traverses the lines between art and decor, sculpture and furniture.” saysAanshiki.

MENTION ANY TWO OF YOUR TOP FAVOURITE PRODUCTS FROM THIS ART COLLECTION? TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS SPECIAL PRODUCT? AANSHIKI : HOLY MATRIMONY and BOON are by far my favourites. Both are abstract in form and are made out of extremely rare, single piece, naturally shaped driftwood which makes both the pieces the only two of their respective kinds (impossible to replicate or reproduce). Both have subtle augmentations that only add a degree of finality and make them a perfect blend of art and décor (Holy matrimony (ON LEFT) can essentially be a chandelier while Boon (BELOW) is actually a lamp) //on left; Holy Matrimoney from ‘As it is’ collection by Anshiki Mittal //below; Boon from ‘As it is’ collection by Anshiki Mittal
WHAT DOES ‘ART’ MEAN TO YOU? AANSHIKI : Like many contemporary artists, I too have an eclectic mix of influences. From anthropomorphic expressions to organic art to even the multi-dimensional themes of rock music. So here I’d actually quote another artist who has been one of my influences – “A to me is a question mark. I don’t think “Art there ever should be an answer. When people ask you what your painting means or what your essay means, that in fact, is your answer!” TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST ART COLLECTION. WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT BEHIND ITS INCEPTION? AANSHIKI : My latest collection is called “AS IT IS”. It attempts to reflect the bittersweet realities of modern society and the emotional perplexities created by humans. By putting the Supreme Creator, himself in the seat of the artist, this collection tries to represent how today’s human being stands in stark contrast to what the creator ideally intended them to manifest mani into. Some of the highlight pieces from this collection include Boon, Holy Matrimony, Beget and The Nobodies.

YOUR ART SEEMS TO CREATE A BALANCE BETWEEN DÉCOR, SCULPTURE AND FURNITURE DESIGN. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THAT. AANSHIKI : Yes, my artistic expression is not confined to a single canvas, with my creations often traversing the lines between art and decor, sculpture and furniture. I don’t really set out to create a lamp or a sculpture or a table; each piece is actually the result of a creative process that happens with the objective of showcasing the story behind the particular piece in the best possible way. At times, it lends itself to a very functional design and at times, it’s absolutely abstract. //above; Holy Matrimoney from ‘As it is’ collection by Anshiki Mittal //on right; Boon from ‘As it is’ collection by Anshiki Mittal Photo courtesy: Aanshiki Mittal

‘Misalign’ from the MNEMONICS collection (ON RIGHT)
A very functional collection at heart, Mnemonics is meant to be a gentle reminder of nature’s subtle messages which our suppressed imagination is unable to comprehend, despite being in plain sight. This collection is a trigger to the creativity inherent in all of us. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE CRAFTSMANSHIP AND MAKING OF THESE SPECIAL PRODUCTS. AANSHIKI : It all starts with a search for only the finest natural creations. Sometimes it’s right there in front of you and sometimes it may be packed and wrapped with the most divine and fascinating of accompaniments. Each find is touched up, re-imagined and brought to life by simply highlighting the natural contours and textures, by preserving the originality of nature’s messages and giving them the clarity they long for. Once the find is refined, what comes out is a one-of-a-kind, genre-defining piece, with each piece having its own message for its recipient to decipher and embrace. //above; Misalign from the ‘Mnemonics’ collection by Anshiki Mittal Photo courtesy: Aanshiki Mittal

“The Dreams of my Divine” by Jai Khanna a dream, an experience; a mood; an emotion, a concept, a presentation. curated by Kirti Parihar ( TPC art)
Growing up in the visual and spiritual presence of Shrinathji artist Jai Khanna’s understanding of his God is an absolutely personal and experiential one. For him Shrinathji is not just The God as known to the world; rather it is an image and a presence he has come to absorb as a part of his life and practice which also informs his artistic premise. “When I sat with Jai for conceptualising this exhibition I was spell bound by the supernal narration of his dreams and the depth on the subject which transported me on a journey unexplainable. A conversation that germinated into a concept inturn gave birth to the “festival series”(continued on page 27)

showcasing 15 works done in bareek kalam in gold and natural colours. An intriguing delineation of spiritual imagery into personal manifestations is what lies at the heart of “The Dreams of my Divine”. says curator Kirti Parihar. (continued)
In Jai’s own words, “this exhibition celebrates the inner festivities of my God in a way that they capture my feelings and his moods. Each festival has a different mood that has been embodied in the image of Shrinathji through his postures, his bhaav, and the elements surrounding him.”
//images from top; image 1//Night 1// of Chandrima artwork - Describing the glorious night of chandrima, this artwork celebrates the competition of moon with Shrinathji where shriji is present in its supreme form of beauty. When challenged by the moon, Shriji emancipates in its most glorious form shadowing the brightness of the moon. Radha signified as a small parrot sits on the moon showering love on shriji’s victory. The divine darshanams of Shriji are a celebrated by angels snowing flowers on him where the colourful cows are enchanted by the aura of the lord and his “bhavam of grandeur .” A special work of art in black where the shine in the form is achieved by using gold leafs. image 2// from left to right; Drasty Shah (founder ( - the project cafe), artist Jai Khanna, curator Kirti Parihar. photo courtesy : Jai Khanna
This exhibition is a glorious depiction of festivals and events as enjoyed by Shrinathji where every artwork is a revelation of the supreme in his many forms and fervors as would appear in Jai’s dreams. A simple yet thoughtful conceptualisation of various bhaavs such as surprise, joy, playfulness, splendour and innocence brings Shrinathji from a sublime to more inclusive and realistic presence thereby making the paintings an undeniably contemporary yet personal delineation of traditional concepts . “The Dreams of my Divine” is a magnificent confluence of emotion, beauty, vitality and divinity of Lord Shrinathji manifesting itself in the most unusual and contemporary presentation by artist Jai Khanna in the body of works showcased here.

Spotlight Interview PALLAVI DEAN,
is a Dubai based sustainability specialist and the Founder & Creative Director of ROAR. Roar is an architecture and interior design studio based in Dubai, UAE, founded in 2013. In the 8 years since inception, Roar has amassed more than 160 completed projects across multiple sectors and countries. DE Editor in chief Anirudh Datta had a detailed interaction with the architect for the DE Spotlight interview series where Pallavi talks about her design journey at Roar and share their latest office HQ project for Early Childhood Authority in Abu Dhabi with DE INDIA .
IN CONVERSATION WITH
PALLAVI DEAN (FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT ROAR) (DUBAI, U.A.E.)
architecture & design magazine
#DEspotlight // interview By ANIRUDH DATTA
DESIGN ESSENTIA MAGAZINE//DEINDIA
Pallavi Dean, principal architect at ROAR has won multiple awards for work across a range of sectors including commercial, hospitality and residential. She was born in India, raised in Dubai and spent years working in London; her designs reflect these eclectic influences. “Roar’s design philosophy is simple: 50% Wild, 50% Tame The wild side is the artistic free spirit that gives a building its wow factor – literally letting the imagination run wild. The tame side is the scientific, evidence-based, data-driven design that makes a building work. The magic happens when these two worlds collide.” says Pallavi.
AD : WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN? PALLAVI : I was drawn to design for two reasons. First, I love solving problems – and designers are first and foremost problem-solvers. Second, design can be such a wonderfully self-indulgent Second form of self-expression.I’m Indian but I’ve never lived in India; the UAE is home but I’m not Emirati; and my husband and kids are British. My multicultural background has had a strong influence on both my identity and my work. This has taught me that life is richer and more vibrant when cultures collide. It’s cultural tension.Three cultures have collided to shape me as a designer and a person: Indian, Emirati and British. They’ve often pushed and pulled me in conflicting directions, creating what are sometimes pretty raw emotional tensions.Thankfully, as I get older, cultural tension is giving way to cultural balance.
AD : WHO WERE YOUR EARLY DESIGN HEROES AND ROLE MODELS? PALLAVI : My mentor and ex-boss Isabel Pintado has always played a pivotal role in my professional and personal life.
AD : TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY IN THE INCEPTION OF ROAR. PALLAVI : The UAE did not need another design firm but as a young mother I wanted the flexibility to pick and choose my hours.I also wanted a space where I could really plug some experimental and academic design ideas, which sometimes don’t show commercial returns in the short term and are not always feasible when you are a fee earner in a large corporate company. compa Sadly, I was also passed up for a promotion while pregnant – this kind of setback led me to realise I wanted to create an organisation that offered both flexibility and equality. I’ve been at this for 9 years now. (on left) Early Chilhood Authority HQ, Abu Dhabi by ROAR Photographer: The Oculis Project

AD : IN A FEW WORDS, HOW WOULD YOU AD : YOUR LATEST PROJECT – THIS DEFINE YOUR DESIGN PROCESS – WHIMSICAL HQ IN ABU DHABI FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD AUTHORITY PHILOSOPHY? LOOKS ONE OF A KIND WITH ITS PALLAVI : Roar’s design philosophy is: 50% Wild, 50% INTERESTING PLAYFUL CONCEPT. Tame. The tame element is characterised by our scientific, evidence-based approach while the wild component lies in the artistic flair we bring to every project.
AD : YOURS MOST PROUD - FAVORITE PROJECT TILL NOW? ANYTHING SPECIFICYOU LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT THIS PROJECT THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL FORYOU? PALLAVI : I’m working on it right now – Our first ever prayer space - a mosque in a residential community in Dubai. I’ve always been fascinated with how people can connect spiritually to an architectural space and now I can be a small part of this experience.
TELL US SOMETHING MORE ABOUT IT’S INCEPTION. PALLAVI : We were chosen by Abu Dhabi’s Early Childhood Authority to imagine its new headquarters – the challenge was to design a space that captures attention with the playful nature of childhood, while at the same time being a mature office. The Early Childhood Authority office called for Curiosity, Collaboration, and Coordination. Alongside the 3C’s, the design of the space was to be reminiscent of tradition and in context with its surrounding area. To address these requirements, the space is designed in a way that encourages users to explore, collaborate and move through multiple zones. In addition, the space planning of the office uses organic forms and primary core space which lend the office a unique character. //below; The Early Childhood Authority HQ in Abu Dhabi by ROAR. AD : THE INVIGORATING DESIGN ELEMENTS AND A VIBRANT COLOR SCHEME CERTAINLY IS A TREAT TO THE EYES. WHAT PRIMARY IDEA/STORY MADE YOU DECIDE ON USING SUCH DESIGN SCHEMES? PALLAVI : With this project, it was all about making each element playful, vibrant, and full of personality but that still has the ergonomics and layout that works for an office setting. Throughout the highly collaborative process, we met with stakeholders to craft a design scheme that looked to both education studies and color psychology to develop space planning and color placement. The floor plan is highly organic, modeling the pattern of how synapses fire in the brain when children learn. It has sinuous lines and is very dynamic, there’s a real organic flow to it. One of the most important things we took from this project is that there are no straight lines in nature, and while architects tend to have this linear approach to space planning, nothing is perfect. That fluidity is further showcased through the furniture, lighting, and art choices. furnitu
AD : ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE ELEMENTS FROM THIS SPACE THAT YOU CHERISH THE MOST AND WHY? PALLAVI : All the playful, quirky features we’ve added in the scheme like the custom-designed exhibition stand with a funhouse mirror (BELOW) that shrinks adults to the size of children, and in lieu of traditional staff photos, the wall of handmade ceramic faces.

AD : YOUR ANOTHER LATEST PROJECT; ACCOR – HOUSE OF ORIGINALS IN DUBAI, AN ART INSPIRED SPACE. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THIS SPACE. PALLAVI : House of Originals takes cues from the lunar calendar, a theme that infuses the design scheme in subtle and abstract ways. For example, we used the average number of days in a lunar month (29.53059 days) as a basis for the project’s calculations and measurements. The original idea was sparked by a late-night visit to the site when it was only a bare patch of land on Palm Jumeirah island. The twinkle of the moonlight on the sea was such a striking vision that it felt natural to bring it indoors. We also wanted to highlight the important role that the lunar calendar plays in changing the hotel’s rhythm throughout the year as key moments occur in the country and the wider region, such as Ramadan, the two Eids, Hajj or the Islamic new year. //images; above: The Early Childhood Authority HQ in Abu Dhabi. on right: House of Originals in Dubai. AD : STAYING INDOORS SAFE IN THIS PANDEMIC MADE US CONNECT WITH OUR HOMES MORE THAN EVER. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR PROCESS TO DESIGN A RESIDENCE THAT TRANSFORMS THE LIVING OF THE RESIDENT? PALLAVI : The biggest driver for us is understanding the user’s needs. We aim to create unforgettable experiences and we believe this can only be done through in-depth, almost science-led research. Studying the local context, context the brief, the client’s expectations: all these aspects combined are always a good starting point – we never have a predetermined idea of what the project should look like. This is part of the reason our studio doesn’t have a signature style. //images; House of Originals in Dubai. GABRIEL : I remember this one project we had done for a couple who were well traveled and want the world to reflect in their home. The client’s stylish, smart, and modern characteristics were represented with classy, spacious and exclusive design elements in a Moroccan ocean theme setting. Statement teal walls, hand-painted panels and patternedd tiles were the heroes of this project, aptly named Daphne. This project was dreamlike: enriched in shades of blue, handcarved panels and beaded shutters - many items a very first for our design team.

AD : WE AT DE INDIA ARE CELEBRATING THE ESSENCE OF OUR HOMES. STAYING INDOORS SAFE IN THIS PANDEMIC MADE US CONNECT WITH OUR HOMES MORE THAN EVER. HOW WOULDYOU DEFINEYOUR PROCESS AT BONITO TO DESIGN A PERFECT HOME THAT TRANSFORMS THE LIVING OF THE RESIDENT? GABRIEL : In these days of home quarantine, the value of personal space has become more apparent than ever. House has become more than your personal space, your time with family, it is now your office, school, movie hall and much more —we have incorporated this new normal in our designs. Home office – workstations designed as part of the bedroom, home theater/sound proofed AV room to enjoy a movie experience as good as any theatre, these are just a few mo examples. I always tell our designers that it is our mission to make people happy. The key is to understand the customer’s needs, keeping in mind that the designs communicate emotions and tell the story of the people who will live there. Lockdown has made us design innovative solutions for homes ranging from movable seats to rich wallpaper murals that transport us to inaccessible locations. Interior designers are devising daring solutions to current difficulties, fueling new trends. As a design firm, we are more focused than ever on meeting the needs of our clients and creating beautiful houses that can be enjoyed for generations. We provide turnkey interior solutions even in the most challenging situations to realize our customers' dream homes.

AD : WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT A PROJECT WHICH IS VERY CLOSE TOYOUR HEART? GABRIEL : Every project is like a baby to me, and it is very difficult to choose just one. Over the years, I was fortunate to work on some amazing ones which gave me beautiful memories to cherish for a lifetime. But for me, the most loved one is always the current project. It’s like a newborn baby, your youngest one, who needs a lot of care & attention.

AD : THE WORLD IS NOW SLOWLY REALIZING THE SERIOUSNESS OF CLIMATE CHANGE. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PRACTICE IN INTERIOR DESIGN TODAY? HOW DO YOU THINK YOU CAN CHANGE THE LIVING OF A RESIDENT WITH SUSTAINABLE DESIGN IN INTERIORS? GABRIEL : In the race to have a significant market share, companies these days often forsake their carbon footprint, and sustainability is the last thought in the process. One of the pillars of our philosophy at Bonito is designing eco-friendly spaces. Great designs give back to the world and take less from it. I encourage designers to enhance the natural light of their spaces, include green in the interiors, and use natural materials or even fabrics. As an organization, we reduced the usage of plastics in our office and banned the consumption of endangered species of wood. Also, in 2020, we joined hands with an NGO called SankalpTaru to introduce sustainability as part of the design philosophy.Aptly named The Family Tree program, it enables Bonito Designs to do their share of giving back to the environment and create a support system for rural com communities. 42

AD : In few words, how would you define your design process – philosophy at DSA? RUCHIR : Design is about creating elegant solutions to address user needs. The tricky thing is that most often we are designing for variety of different types of personalities. People’s expectations and desires evolve over time. Sometimes design evolves to meet these changes, sometimes design is the driver of the change. Regardless, a designer’s work is never done. This Rega does not mean that design needs to be trendy, design can be timeless, but a great designer has a bent toward iteration and always has their ear to the ground AD : A juxtaposed abode of subtle royal elegance; your latest Residential project - the Shakti Bungalow. Tell us something about the design process for this residence. RUCHIR : The USP of this project is the outer elevation is a mimic of the existing elevation and the three things that make the house exquisite is the royal blue and white colors, checkered designs and post top lanterns which are extended throughout and can be seen in the décor and furnishing. “Our first impression was to create a stunningly beautiful home with a basic form of straight walls and large openings with flat slabs, edges curved (creating the language of a Moorish design)” says the architects. The orientation of the house and its strategic positioning of elements such as the courts and open spaces bring in ample amount of daylight and at the same time avoid direct heat gain. Volumes are played to create multiple leisure spaces with a landscaped terrace accessible from the first floor. The architectural vocabulary of this floo home was envisaged representing Mediterranean elements. The design theme of this home is a complete mix with elements of nature, vibrant colours, highly adorned furniture and accessories. The house experiences magical dance of shadows through the wooden pergolas, slits on the frontal elevation and huge fenestrations on all the rooms. rooms The living room opens up to the external courtyard spaces which in-turn adds a voluminous formal breakfast space overlooking the pooja court, directly accessible from the entry foyer. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR STUDIO’S DESIGN PHILOSOPHY? RAKESH & NISHALI : The eloquence in the language of architecture is measured by how a building is put together. Architecture is order and this order carries throughout the building and site. Architecture is best when it is as honest experience of simplicity and pure geometry. Simplicity always trumps geomet confusion. Our approach to design is deep rooted in the context. We use context to create identity. Context is more than an intellectual consideration of the history or physical factors of a neighborhood, city or state and it is more than the way new will live with the old. Context draws on the senses, the sight, smell and memories that senses define a place and make it unique. For us as an architect, from here our design style and sensibilities have emerged. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROJECT? WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT BEHIND ITS DESIGN INCEPTION? RAKESH & NISHALI : “THE URBAN PALATIAL APARTMENT" is located in Pune, Maharashtra,India. The design is a story of a young family of Karanjkar’s. A story, sto about a sensitive space to accommodate the needs and emotions of the people. This 1600 sqft apartment is located in the south eastern outskirts of the bustling city of Pune.We strive to create, for our Client;a lifestyle with more simplicity and calmness. Our emphasis is on“decluttering” - perhaps since we are so driven to the concept of“less is more” and this design is a representation of that concept. This design strives to create an ample balanced living space and to fill them with a sense of place. A space that seeks to be young and conscious, for a generation that values art;but also seeks usability and functionality of everyday life. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN ELEMENT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROJECT? RAKESH & NISHALI : We take holistic approach to planning, architecture, interior design and landscape. This connects people with ideas, creating next generation environments. Inspiring interactive built and unbuilt spaces. In this apartment, Spacious living with open kitchen and dining area is the most interesting element of the project, which brings the soul of an energetic space. To accentuate the energy of this space, an accent wall of unpainted composite panels was created. These composite panels binds the whole space together with ultra clean crisp lines, a simple and monochrome palette and the use of materials that included mirror, composite panels and veneered wood accentuate the openness venee of that living space making it more ostentatious.

THE WORLD IS NOW SLOWLY REALIZING THE SERIOUSNESS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE. BEING AN ARCHITECT, WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE IN ARCHITECTURE TODAY? RAKESH & NISHALI : We believe, Sustainability is not an added feature.
The Building’s sustainability features should be so deeply embedded in its design that it becomes hard to distinguish where the aesthetic concepts end and where the green design begins. And since we are facing transformational global demographic trends, design has more role to play than ever before. Sustainable design has a lot to do with society, economy and environment's principles, and these elements should be considered in design process. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN ELEMENT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROJECT? ELEMEN ELEMENTAL STUDIO : The design elements are always close to our process. The exposed brick and its exploration are keen to our design process. Massing of the structure has been kept subtle, experimenting with light and shadow in brick patterns. The brick being the most basic element of construction brings simplicity as well as pattern of creation to make the façade an art. Exposed brick wall (page 79) in the southern side containing circular openings not only illuminate’s the stairwell naturally but adds a rustic earthy look to the main facade.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN ELEMENT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROJECT?
TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROJECT? WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT BEHIND ITS DESIGN INCEPTION? DIVYE : “VILLA IN SURAJMAL VIHAR" a residence in New Delhi. a residence in New Delhi.Any project starts with a brief that filters down to an ambition or dream of the owner. The client wanted a “Boutique High End”Villa. Concept of bringing outdoor inside and intangibility twixt spatial configuration, design elements, textures & patterns is what we emphasized on. Starting with the Façade or “Building Attire” as the architect likes to call it, the conventional way of designing is challenged, pushing the en envelope bringing out a sculptural quality. Detailing & Layering into depths of design is what creates an effective & open-ended perception outside & inside and whatever you see & experience. DIVYE : The dynamic facade is the primary eye catching feature of the house. Form and pure architectural elements put together to create “CHIC yet ELEGANT” Façade. The Lounge & Family Dining are brushed with metal finish and soft hues combined to create a serene yet luxurious ambience. The Living room has a strong sense of unfolding textures depicting st elegant palette coupled with a play of grandeur. The bathrooms can also be intriguing and why not with vibrant colors and a dash of luxe. Spaces otherwise neglected have been carefully, design. I would say rather than a single design element, it’s the meticulous designed details coupled with overall asymmetry has to be the protagonist in this amazing villa. The house has a distinct dissimilarity as you go from one space to another.

THE WORLD IS NOW SLOWLY REALIZING THE SERIOUSNESS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE. BEING AN ARCHITECT, WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE IN ARCHITECTURE TODAY? DIVYE : Sustainability is a word that has emerged to the forefront of all architectural
p discussions at present. Creating a careful balance between human needs and the needs of the ecosystem. In buildings, the core concepts of sustainability revolve around judicious use of resources, and a good building life cycle. As buildings grow in scale, the technicalities associated with sustainability and green design can get increasingly complex. However, the central ideas of sustainable design are simple. It can be applied to architecture at any scale, irrespective of the function function. The key is to design a building that is site-specific and remains rooted in its context. Our role, as architects, is to also design a self-sustaining micro-ecosystem, containing the building on-site, as a part of the larger ecosystem on the planet.
