AttraVerso l’Italia Luci e ombre nel paesaggio The project has been done in honor of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy celebrated the 17th March 2011. The Altare della Patria is the set for the installation of a temporary exhibition structure named ItaliaSiItaliaNo, which aims to portray the current situation of the country in both positive and negative aspects. The design concept is strongly related to the monumental architecture that houses it, and the chosen exhibition theme, the landscape: The Italian territory is characterized by the contradiction between the picturesque “postcard” landscape and examples of moral and construction abuses. This dichotomy is figuratively expressed and synthetized by "lights and shadows" contrast, that gives the title to the selection of images and photography exhibited along the museal path. The structure is projected as a blade that cuts in the middle the Altare della Patria, symbol of Italy, skewed to maximize sun exposition of one façade, and to create a shadow’s cone that evolves and intensified itself from early morning until evening. The large scale of the project depends on the physical and symbolic dimensions of the monument. Proportions have been studied in order to make immediately visible the blade from Piazza Venezia and its gesture: it gets itself brutally in the porch and at the same time creates a backdrop to the equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II.

“Il taglio è una sorta di atto di azzeramento, ma insieme di “costruzione”, mediante il quale egli vagheggia in un luogo primario, uno spazio assoluto, infinito, sempre più lontano dall’accidentalità della materia(...) E’ l’idea pura che si avvera nell’atto, nel gesto del taglio, e al tempo stesso diviene magicamente forma, senza quasi passare per la materia.”

“Luci”
“Ombre”
The exhibition is divided into two parts: The first one is the experience that visitors live along the cantilevered walkway connected to the illuminated surface, which allows a view of one of the most famous landscape of the city of Rome: its roofs and their amazing gardens. The second moment is the real exhibition, located in the thickness of the “blade”. It is a path that develops in a confined environment that consists of an inclined ramp accompanied by a ribbon modulated in the space to facilitate the view of the picture exposed on it. It is divided into three sections which show, through complaint and celebration photos, the most famous Italian landscapes: cities, coasts and mountains.

Masterplan The maquette and its project are entirely made with a system called by the announcement "stecchette e pannellucci" which provides an almost dry assemblage through the node used in the Red Blue Chair by Rietveld. This construction method has inspired the textures of the structure, designed to achieve various effects of light and different shadow degrees according to the photographs exhibited. To increase the darkness within the structure, fabric and wood pannels have been used to complete the external skin. During the night these elements become, supports for the projection of the art pieces and display to promote the exhibition.

The site choosen for the project is the “complesso delle tre esedre e del palazzo di inverno”. This part of Villa Adriana is rich of ruins and is situated in the center of the Villa, so it’s easy to reach. The project start from the idea to link the archeological museum to an exhibition and a museum of the ruins. The strong and visible intervention try to rebuild almost the ancient spaces and volumes with the new stone: concrete. This material is used in the most innovative way:as traslucid pannels; this allow to reduce inside temperature and have a diffuse light during the day, to transform the architecture into art installation during the night.

Palazzo d’inverno The Palazzo d’inverno host a completelly new buildings. On the top of this amazing terrace we built the temporary exhibition open air room, the conference room the bar and the technical services. According with the main concept the volume, defined by a plastic roof, try to re-create original spaces. The main problem has been a lack of knowledge. To face the unknow height of the palace the building is dafined by several slabs that rappresent the different heights ipotized by experts. The roof is sorretto by very thin steel coulums that allows a great flexibility of the space, that could be adapted to different functions using mobile pannels. To avoid albedo and greenhouse effect in the conference room, and to respect the concept of compact volumes, the roof is (piegato) to avoid the view of the people on the terrace from the lower central court. Ruins are also protected through a flotting pavement.

Diamoci all’ippica The first (fake) polo match in Giarre by Incompiuto Siciliano Alterazioni Video in collaboration with Claudia D'Aita and Enrico Sgarbi in 2008 starts a journey to discover unfinished works in Italy. Starting from a recognition across the national territory, trying to identify all unfinished buildings, They has focused on Sicilia. As Pietro Germi said :"Italian features in Sicily have been doubled." In the island this phenomenon is more present than ever, with as many as 175 unfinished works identified. The Mafia presence and the economic crisis that still characterizes the island, have increased the number of sites never closed, just because a work in progress often means jobs, but most of all subsidies and incomes. Trying to identify common characteristics and recurring elements in unfinished buildings the art group has come to the definition of a manifesto, affirming the artistic value of this buildings and suggesting a new definition of style. From this position comes a new awareness of a new art called dell’Ecomostro, able to attract busness and interests, like any other turistic place. At this point there is the need of new strategies to interpret and reactivate this immense fortune. Today, we have to decide between: to finish buildings, to demolish the, to convert them into something else, or leave them abbandoned. Because of the lack of space in the city, the lack of money, not only to finish buildings but also to demolish them, re-use seems to be the best solution in the attempt to redeem these buildings, a symbol of common sense of frustration and defeat. Alterazioni Video proposes to create in Giarre, capital of unfinished buildings, a real archaeological park in an attempt to perform a revaluation of the area, starting from the more striking example: the polo stadium. http://www.facebook.com/IncompiutoSiciliano?fref=ts

Masterplan Starting from the results of the “Festival dell’incompiuto, Temporaring hosting & Incompiuto Siciliano” helded in 2010 in Giarre, we developed a questionnaire to test the results of their workshop. Interviewing groups and individuals who attend the stadium for sports and recreational activities, we developped an integration to the previous masterplan that attemps to encounter everybody’s needs. More in detail the new master plan doesn’t demolish the mezzanine both to respect the state of ruin and unfinished and because it isseen as an opportunity to duplicate the space available. The project aims to facilitate the practices already in progress through a new use of space and the creation of new ones through temporary low cost structures. The generic masterplan is only indicative for a new approach to this skeleton and aims to show how small gestures could reactivate projects already failed and become a meeting point between citizens. Devices The first step of the project was to find low cost materials to build devices. The area of Giarre is famous for the production of oranges, so we recovered from neighboring farmers hundreds of boxes used for oranges transportation. After having washed them we started the testing phase, in order to understand how to make the structure solid and which kind of fitting use. To test constructing methods we built several devices to support the interviews: set, totem, scenes,... The results were collected in a book which, with all the materials, at the end of sunday’s event, was given to the association Effetto Domino who helped us during all the week.
