PUSHKAR - THE HOLY CITY, HOME TO AUSPICIOUS PUSHKAR LAKE AND TEMPLE OF JAGAT PITA SHRI BRAHMA Pushkar is one of the prime pilgrim centres in India. Pushkar, largely popular as the king of pilgrimage sites in India, is one of the most significant places in the country. It falls within the province of Ajmer in the state of Rajasthan. Although the exact date or era of the origin of the place is not known, it is thought to be one of the oldest cities in India. Best known for its high religious reverence and the popular, colorful Pushkar Mela, the place is flocked by pilgrims and tourists in large counts, continuously throughout the year.
Since the place is one of the major centres of religion, there are several legends and beliefs circling the city. In fact, the very origin of the place is largely associated with a popular religious belief. According to it, the place came into existence when Hindu Lord Brahma in an attempt to free the people from the demon Vajranash released a swan with a lotus (intoned with magical spells) in its beak. It was decided that the place where the lotus falls would be the site of Maha Yagna. Evidently the lotus fell on the site of Pushkar, where the Lord then performed the yagna and killed the demon. Thus derived the name of the city. Today, the place houses a highly revered Brahma temple. Note that Brahma temples are very rare and there are only a handful of places in the world where exist Brahma temples, thus making Pushkar a significant one.
