PERSONAL STATEMENT Architecture is for the people and place; sustainability is for the planet. In this rapidly evolving world, one needs to constantly ‘un-learn’ to grasp newer ideas. It isn’t just the technology but also the people using it, that change over short periods of time, making architectural design a field of continuous learning. As an active advocate of recycling and sustainable living, I strive to achieve effortless and economical solutions in my work. It isn’t enough to just be respectful of our natural environment, we must also participate in restoring it. As designers of the built world, we hold the ability to direct public behaviour in a way to collectively influence solutions to the modern problems of the ever-evolving urban landscape. Therefore, making it essential for us to always have the right answers. Through most of my formal education I have learnt the process of getting from point A to B, dominantly governed by the process of its completion. It was only when I entered the field that I realised, books and structured material could only take us so far, and that it is our individual experiences which ultimately teach us the most. Active debate is what drives individual growth. An environment with constant un-learning pushes us to see the bigger picture, and it is with this knowledge, that we are capable of making the right decisions, towards influencing the direction of growth for our civilized society. This is what I hope to gain from a master’s programme – to learn to ‘be a part of the process’ rather than ‘being pushed’ by it.

BIODIVERSITY RESEARCH INSTITUTE, KARWAR [BRIK] ARCHITECTURE AS A TOOL TOWARDS ECOLOGICAL CONSERVATION IN DEVELOPING REGIONS
“Can Architecture be used to affect society and its perceptions?” Multiple studies have been conducted over the years that prove the link between architectural spaces and user behaviour, giving merit to the “function follows form” debate. The aim of this thesis is to encourage the preservation of ecological zones and sustainable development as human settlements expand to accomodate the growing population. BRIK is designed to achieve this through means of collaborative scientific research, public involvement and awareness, to influence the conservation of ecologically sensitive zones in the area.

Land-use maps by KDA (Karwar Development authority) near the location of the site. Maps show an increase in commercial land-use along with conversion of agricultural land for commercial uses.

The objective revolves around involving the community with the idea of environmental conservation by engaging the crowd through jobs, workshops, tourism, & free movement around site

Karwar is a small coastal town loacted in North Karnataka at Goa border, sandwiched by the Western ghats in the East and the Arabian Sea in the West. The Western ghats of India are one of the 34 Biodiversity hotspots in the world with over 15,000 species of flora and fauna in the region.

Laterite is a locally avaiable porous stone that is made into bricks for construction, and hardens on exposure. IPS (indian patented stone) flooring provides good wearing properties

The building looks into a large open space that is both visually and spatially accesible through all corridors. The ground floor hosts a greater foot-fall with administrative and interactive activities. The laboratories are raised to the second storey to reduce disturbances around research zones.

COMMUNITY CENTER, GANDHI BAZAAR COMMERCIAL COMPLEX AND RECREATION CENTER IN GANDHI BAZAAR, BANGALORE
Part 1 - Group Work : Study of Gandhi Bazaar
The hexagram is a mandala symbol found on ancient South Indian Hindu temples. It symbolizes the perfect meditative state of balance achieved between Man and God, and if maintained, results in “nirvana”.
Architecture in Basavangudi has drawn from this symbolism, and the shape continues to replicate itself in modern times.
Individual focus on data collection and documentation for the “History and Culture” of Gandhi Bazaar. References taken from recorded history and interviews of original residents of Basavangudi. Part 2 - Individual work: Program derivation and Design of a commercial building in Gandhi Bazaar on a hypothetical plot. Aim: Design of a mixed used building, in compliance with Bengaluru bylaws and NBC.

Project site
Gandhi Bazaar is a diagonal market in Basavangudi, Bangalore known mainly for its flower and
hawker shops. The area also houses many hindu temples, fruit, vegetable and clothing stores, and restaurants. The market typically functions from 6am to 9pm, with an increased crowd during festival periods for buying special puja items. Basavangudi is a 1900s residential locality in a strict gridiron layout with diagonal street markets, and green pockets at all major junctions. 11

In a densely built city like Bangalore, we struggle to find green open spaces to take us away from the concrete cityscape. The site is made to open into a lush green gathering space. The vehicular access is restricted to the site edge to facilitate free pedestrian movement within the campus. The campus is designed to act as the designated activity hub for the people in the region, by keeping about 70% of its area open to the public.
