Therefore the credit of my achievements in this internship period definitely goes to firm itself. First of all, I would like to express my special appreciation to the firm for providing the working environ ment there.

This few months of internship period has been my most pro lific period of the architectural course. Here i experienced the practical know-how of architecture. For my successful and fruitful completion of internship period, there were supportive mentors and supervisor providing feedbacks and knowledg es,without these i would have never been able to learn about the practical aspects of the architecture.

knowledge cannot be completely fulfilled until and unless going through the practical realization of the architectural knowhow. So, internship is a platform where the architectural students are acquainted with the practical knowledge of architecture, a real world, where the design projects being prepared in the imagination and the paper results into the real form.

matter of the report consists of three parts. The first part of the report included introduction to internship, its objectives, reason behind selecting the firm and company profile. The second part included my experience during internship period which explains the each day learning and experiencing the professional field. In the third part there is detailed description of the projects in which i was completely or partially involved including photographs, drawings and sketches. In conclusion, this report provides framework for the work experience, projects done, with the objectives and scope .

At this phase, I had to design the kitchen and dining room based on Vastu principles, since the client wanted a kitchen in the north direction. In the original design, the washroom and kitchen were positioned on the south side of the structure. After switching the positioning of the spaces, the false window on the north side of the structure, which had been utilised as a design feature, was able to be utilised as a kitchen window. I had to design both doors and windows for this project. Instead of using a market grill that didn’t match the traditional ambiance of the home, I created my own grill designs. The grills on the doors are depicted in the sketch and are attached to the door’s swing so that they may be opened without disturbing the visual axis between the interior and exterior of the establishment. Grills for the windows, on the other hand, are pictured and swung separately.

In addition, electrical connections are established at the slab with nails at this level. Because this wall lies on the boundary, which prevents seepage and protects against efflorescence, shear walls can also be erected using distribution rods.

During my site visit, I learned a lot about the structure. In the first photograph, we can see the column, which has rods extending at two different heights, the sill level and the lintel level. The honeycomb defect, which reduces column strength due to lack of compression, is also pictured. Thus, when filling a column, one must be careful not to compress excessively.

18Anjana Kunwar /10

Similarly, the distribution rods are depicted as they would be installed in a real site, with wires running across them.

When i began working on this project, the groundwork was the only aspect that had been established. Therefore, i was able to work on working drawings and visit the site to see how it was put into practice.

The subsequent three photos demonstrate the form work and supports in action. The wires are shown as they would appear in real life.

TASK INVOLVED

Srijanachwok house is 6 storey residence cum commercial building. First two floors are for commercial purpose and remaining floors as residential space. For this building structural design was already done and our firm was responsible for front facade, interiors and other detail drawings. For this building client wanted it to have minimal designs so the theme color for this project was set as wood and whites .

For this project, colors were already decided as client wanted minimal and elegant interior. We decided on woods and whites for colors and interior is done in minimal and this color scheme. As we can see on plans, we have columns of different sizes, so in order to hide those and minimize the waste of spaces we provided cabinets in between as well as we projected the walls in and out to give interesting looks rather that just a plain wall.

Similarly we used these design elements to cover the pipelines that passes through walls. Also i designed portion wall. The purpose was to allow light pass through it and yet to make it aesthetically pleasing.

23 / Internship report 2022 INTERIOR&DRAWINGDETAIL

For master bedroom, the same color scheme was used. Rather than plain ceiling and walls, client wanted something interesting, so we connected ceiling and wall components. Providing lights.

Guestroom has small space. so in this space i had to design TV wall. This TV wall is of 8’ excluding door. Client wanted dressing table, some drawer spaces and TV unit. So as client wanted the minimal design, i tried avoiding many elements and used horizontal lines and developed it according to the needs providing dressing space and drawers. And the color scheme is wood texture and whites.

I was involved throughout the whole process, from planning to completion, with 2 options for this Kids room. Client wanted a minimalist design and requested a bed, closet, study desk, television wall, and flow and child anthropometry.

30Anjana Kunwar /

• For this project, the main challenge was to penetrate light in different space cause the site was sandwiched between two buildings

Learnings

• As client requirement was minimal design in every spaces.

• Enhancing the space and material selection with minimal design.

• How building services can affect on our design.

• As site of Pokhara is mostly narrowed and there it was provided a void to penetrate sky light from top to basement.

• Improvement in 3d and visualization.

• I learned the relation of false ceiling with beam line , lights, and floor finishes.

Challenges

In this particular project i was involved in sanitary, electrical, & elevation drawings.

In first figure, we can see how partition walls are constructed in site. They use thread to make a straight line which denotes the

In fourth picture, we can see the hole made in slab, this is made to pass the soil pipe and waste pipe through the floors and then it is connected to safety tank at ground.

central line and wall is made according to this reference line.

Site visit helped me to understand it more throughly about how drawings are implemented in real life.

In second & third picture, we can see electrical layouts as well as water pipe layouts. As we can see in figure, both electrical and water pipes run through wall.

I had an opportunity to visit site during different phases. Where i learned more of practical knowledge and know-hows of how site works are carried out.

In seventh picture, we can see stairs cast which is done to shape the stairs.

Inworks.ninth

picture, the form works are taken out after 21 days .

32Anjana Kunwar / 05 07 06 08

In eighth we have shoring, which is temporary construction that is used later on for facade

Similarly in sixth picture, we can see ac pipes connection. These pipes are connected between AC and the exhaust which will be kept outside the building.

Since I had opportunity to visit site on different phases, i learned many things about how works are carried out during each phases of construction.

Similarly, to know the electrical points on slab, nails are kept as to locate the electrical point in slab which will be helpful during light fixation.

In fifth picture, how later on the soil waste pipe are concerted and passed through that hole from upper level to lower level. In this design, 45 angled pipe and 90 angled pips are fitted below the slab as client did not want his bathroom to be at 9”” from ground level. So pipes are fitted below the slab which will be later on covered with false ceiling.

HOLIDAY04HOMES

In this project i was involved in electrical drawing, planning and 3d of resi dential unit, interior of the master bedroom, lobby and lighting of landscape

Namobuddha , Kathmandu I sq. ft

Holiday homes is a resort located in Namobuddha , Kathmandu. The main purpose of the project is to create space for spending holidays. Client want ed this project to be multipurpose. they wanted to make it as their holiday home and when not in used it could be available for rent.

54Anjana Kunwar /

TASK INVOLVED:

The Holiday Home is a holiday station made by the group of investors. This proposal was to create a place to spend their time away from home. They envisioned it as a getaway cottage where customers could go to relax if they didn’t have anything to do.

A comparison of the site context and the topography was undertaken in order to design this project. Because the terrain is steep, we did not want to change the topography or disturb it in any way. Every slope allows house roofs to drop down the hill, offering more open and uninterrupted views. The residential units are positioned as they appear in the conceptual drawing, so that the terrace of the lower unit may be used as an interactive area. We also want to return nature what we take by installing a green roof.

The floating effect is achieved on each floor by lifting the balcony portion only. The initial design divided the balcony into two parts and emphasized the entrance, but the client wanted a single division later. Therefore, we changed it from three-dimensional to two-dimensional. For the exterior material, they wanted a natural look, so we used wood and concrete textures.

The client wanted a contemporary and sophisticated look for the master bedroom of this house. Because the client owns Shera, I used it for this project. There were two interior designs, the first was rather dark. For the light grey, black, and wood interiors, I used grey, black, and wood planks for the walls. A floating television cabinet was designed for the grey-coloured wall and wood. For the lobby, lights were used on a table and mirror.

For this project, I developed two designs, one being a light-themed design. To create a modern, sleek environment using Shera products, I employed them. The colours are light in tone, resulting in a comfortable interior ambiance. On the TV wall, I kept things simple and minimally adorned. Since the wall had so many elements and mirrors, I decided to keep things simple.

We only had a week to plan and create this 3D model, so we had to make sure that the design matched the one in Kathmandu. The client wanted the same colour scheme and design details, so we used the same colours and ornamentations while making our 3D model. The pictures below are the reference photos we were given, and we reproduced them in 3D.

• Conceptual

So, as clients request, we designed it providing maximum display area, mirrors of characters. I tried to insert some elements such as scale at the door of changing room, providing walls having niches. Since west wall had glass facade, we decided to hang cloths only on upper portion as not to discolor cloths due to exposer.

While designing the interior of kids shop, we had some requirements from client. Requirements of clients were:

• Open display

• Tile as it is

• Mirror as character

• Avoiding false ceiling as much as possible

• Toddlers to 10yrs

72Anjana Kunwar /

Before starting with 3d de velopment i did reference for interiors of children .Af ter that while developing 3d, i started with mood boards. As it was kids shop, i used pastel tones with wood texture. I also sepa rated boys and girls section with colors. At the place where columns were locat

ed,i made that place for mirrors with various char acters which adds interest ing point for the interiors. I also developed wall niches which arranged circular niches in abstract mickey with different shapes as in figure.

73 / Internship report 2022 INTERIORFINAL

After completion of conceptual 3D, we had client meeting. We showed our design to client . Even though client loved the design, they had certain budget allocated to interior so we had to redo it. So we tried minimal design. We used only wood and white as color scheme and provided maximum display spaces. We kept character mirrors and some elements and redesigned whole space, After this is the final design and we did further detailed design of furniture and so on.

The Nakagin Capsule Tower, created by architect Kisho Kurokawa in 1972, was the first capsule architecture design. The module was designed to accommodate traveling businessmen who worked in central Tokyo. This design demonstrates the importance of sustainable architecture and material recycleability, as each capsule can be plugged into the central core and replaced as necessary.

The 140 stacked and rotating capsules at Kurokawa’s Ginza development stand 14-stories tall and are located in Tokyo. Kurokawa developed a technology that permits each capsule to be installed to the concrete core with only four high-tension bolts, allowing for easy replacement. Each capsule is 4 x 2.5 metres, big enough to accommodate a single person. The interior of a capsule may be altered by connecting it to other capsules. The pods’ components were fabricated in Shiga Prefecture and then transported to the location by truck. The pre-assembled interior includes a circular window, a bed and bathroom, and a TV, radio, and alarm clock. A crane lifted the capsules into the shipping containers, which were then fastened to a concrete core shaft. The Metabolism architecture movement, which emphasized adaptable, expanding, and interchangeable design for apartment and high-rise buildings in Tokyo, is a terrific example of the concept first proposed at the 1960 World Design Conference.

ARCHITECTURE

In 1987, the German government organized a competition to expand and upgrade the Baroque Liebeskind Jewish Museum in Berlin’s courtsburg district. The competition was won by architect Daniel Liebeskind, who chose to utilise the original structure as a portal, while the abrupt zinc-clad extension sits detached and juxtaposed with its setting as a representation of Jewish existence in Germany. As part of the museum’s introduction, visitors descend into the Baroque structure, and after this initial descent, three symbolic paths are established, which intersect and delineate separate architectural experiences that follow the narrative of a hidden Jewish identity.

84Anjana Kunwar /

The museum’s entrance is from within the baroque building, and it has three symbolic paths that intersect. They follow the narrative of a hidden Jewish identity. The first axis leads to the Holocaust Tower the 24-metre-tall concrete void the space unconditioned through the seasons has a single light source from a small opening in its roof. The second axis connects the museum to the garden of exile with its tilted foundation and grid of 49 pillars the experience is meant to disorient and help the visitor understand the plight of being uprooted during the Second World War from within the labyrinth a feeling of solitude predominates views of the fractured facade or maintained but visitors are confined to the gardens and must leave by the way in which they entered. The final axis connects the submerged paths to the exhibition above a continuum of Jewish history is presented within a series of disjointed spaces along the zigzagging structure. details of Jewish life and prosperity are presented as well as reactions against discrimination throughout history. In this way the visitor leaves with a fairly comprehensive understanding an impression of the tumultuous history of Jewish life within Germany and beyond.

Jewish Museum by Daniel Libiskind

Diebedo Francis Kere

Can an architect truly help bring change to society?

In 2001, he built his first project and this was the Gando Primary school. It was a building built by and for the people of Gando. Locals offered their input, labour and resources from conception to completion, crafting nearly every part of the school by hand, guided by the Kere’s inventive forms of indigenous materials and modern engineering. His design was geared to combat extreme heat and poor lighting conditions with limited resources. As he said “Good architecture in Burkina Faso is a classroom where you can sit, have a light that is filtered, entering the way that you want to use it, across a blackboard or on a desk. How can we take away the heat coming from the sun, but use the light to our benefit? Creating climate conditions to give basic comfort allows for true teaching, learning and excitement.” Indigenous clay was fortified with cement to form bricks with bioclimatic thermal mass, retaining cooler air inside while allowing heat to escape through a brick ceiling and wide, overhanging, elevated roof, resulting in ventilation without the mechanical intervention of air conditioning.

Can the quality of built space make the lives of people better?

How do his structures connect with the lives of people and of communities?

In a world in crisis, amidst changing values and generations, he reminds us of what has been, and will undoubtedly continue to be the cornerstone of architectural practice a sense of community and narrative quality, which he himself is so able to recount with compassion and pride. In this, he provides a narrative in which architecture can become a source of continued and lasting happiness and joy.

‘Theory must be put into practice to have any value.’. To sum up my 90 days at Ja: Studio as a trainee architect, it was full of knowledge, inspiration, aspiration, design works, deadlines, laughter, fun, games, and most importantly love. Architecture has become my family during my internship at Ja: Studio. I will continue to learn from them either directly or indirectly.

I have acquired a great deal of knowledge from Kajipokhari residence and Srijanachwok residence projects, which I will keep with me forever. I came to know a new architectural approach and journey. The time I spent at the studio taught me far more than just about architecture; it educated me about life. Through my internship, I’ve become a different person than I was before. I have also become a different kind of architecture student than before, and I hope to achieve great things from the education and guidance I have received from my family, Ja: Studio.
