PEELED ADVANCED DESIGN_401
SUMMER 2014
DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN, I FOUND INTEREST IN THE CONCEPTUAL IDEA OF CREATING A STRUCTURE THAT WOULD START TO EMULATE THE URBAN LANDSCAPE THAT OCCURS ON THE EDGES OF BROOKLYN THROUGH THE NOTIONS OF ELEVATING AND INTERSECTING PROGRAMS. TO TAKE THIS IDEA YET ONE STEP FURTHER, THE BUILDING BEGINS TO GIVE OFF THE SENSATION THAT IT IS GETTING "PEELED" AWAY FROM THE DATUM, ALLOWING FOR THE PASSING PEDESTRIAN THE OPPORTUNITY TO STOP AND LOOK DOWN INTO THE MULITPURPOSE SPACE AND BE A PART OF ANY COMMUNITY EVENTS OCCURING. FOR THE CREATION OF THE CLASSROOMS SPATIAL CONDITION THERE WAS AN INITIAL STUDY OF HOW EVERYTHING IN THIS SPACE WOULD DERIVE FROM A RECATAGULAR BLOCK. FROM THERE, THIS IDEA WAS FURTHER DEVELOPED FOR THE FULL SCALE OF THE BUILDING'S LAYOUT.
