Zimbabwe is rich in minerals such as coal, iron ore, gold, nickel, silver and copper. According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy June 2015, the country held 502 million tonnes (Mt) of coal reserves at the end of 2014.

Coal production over the forecast period 2015-2020 is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.4% to wange Colliery Company Ltd (HCCL) plans to increase its production through capacity expansions at existing mines. Zimbabwe’s coal mining industry is dominated by HCCL and Makomo Resources (PVT) Ltd.


Simultaneously, 2.5Mt of coal was consumed in 2014, up by 4.2% over 2013. The domestic powergeneration sector is the single largest consumer of coal in Zimbabwe and total consumption is expected to grow a CAGR of 31.4% over the forecast period to 9.8Mt in 2020, backed by rising demand from the power sector on account of upcoming new coal-fired power projects.
