New York born designer, Saul Bass was a graphic creator from his early years. He enjoyed drawing as a child and continued to draw and create until he graduated high school. After this Bass studied art at night school. This grounding lead him to find work creating movie posters for Hollywood, in California. Bass began this design journey by creating a movie poster for the 1954 film Carmen Jones. His design was different to other promotional posters which had come before and this got him noticed in a big way. He was then commissioned to not only create the poster for the film The Man with the Golden Arm but to also create the title sequence. Saul Bass was now becoming a designer who was in demand. He created posters and title sequences for famous films such as Spartacus, Psycho, Exodus and The Shinning. He also collaborated with his wife Elaine on many of his film titles and after his death, Elaine has continued to create in this area. The reason that Saul Bass stands out from other designers is because of his non-conformity. Bass de-cluttered the film poster and made something which was off grid and simple in design. It could be said that he added ‘design’ to something which was previously just put together. The images may look simple in construction but they were heavy in symbolism, used colour in a different way and mixed very hand made images with slightly altered photographs. You could almost call his changes to the poster design revolutionary. His animated title sequences were also attention grabbers.

04

Some were comical and others were gritty, but either way, they set the scene for the film which was to come and this was again something new. The Bunny Lake poster comes 10 years after The Man with the Golden Arm, but it is just as striking. You can tell so much from this simple poster. A child has literally been torn from her surroundings and hope is fading in finding her. The poster says it all in a very simple format. The shape of a small child has been torn form the poster and the title fades away, just as hope is fading away. So why is Saul Bass such an important designer to me? Well, thinking back, he was a designer who caught my attention as a child. I was intrigued back in the 1970’s by the quirky way that his film intros told a story. This has stuck with me and now that I am training in design, his style is still an inspiration to me. This is because of his ability to tell a story through the use of a colour, or the unusual shape of an image or the minimal elements that he has used to make sure the viewer sees the message. Bass is not political in his messages, nor is he out to shock, but his designs were so different and memorable he guaranteed his place in the history of graphic design.

London born Kate Moross is a successful and innovative graphic designer, illustrator and art director, which work is well known for its originality, versatility and for being multidisciplinary. Kate’s success started when Moross was still in school. While attending the second year at university, Moross got commissioned a commercial campaign for Cadbury. Kate Moross is a versatile artist. Their style is creative, fun, colourful, playful, bold and unique. With a strong work ethic and constant practice, Moross has worked throughout the years to refine what now is their signature style. Kate’s works are for the most typebased. For Moross, hand-drawing letterforms has always been a constant in their life, drawing letters always felt natural. Kate typographical work, for which is renowned for, started to be publicly appreciated in 2006, when indie bands’ fliers designed by Moross started to appear on the London nights clubs’ scene. Kate doesn’t only produce typographycentred works, over the year Moross has also mastered in a geometric style supported by the usage of isometric grids. Moross’ exploration of this techniques resulted in productions of pattern design, print making and typography. The award-winning designer counts a large number of important collaborations

06

throughout her years of practice. From the earliest commissions made for magazines like Wired, Vice and The Guide, Kate’s list of collaborations has grown. Not afraid of pushing boundaries, Kate has created clothing lines, designer packagings and products collaborating with worldwide famous brands such as Kiehl’s, Uniqlo, Transport of London, Nike, Ray-Ban, Cadbury and many others. Kate Moross identifies as non-binary. This identity reflects in their works as well and is the ethos behind all their projects and behind Studio Moross. Being non- binary means living borderline between genders. Kate applies the same non-binary approach to their work ethic too, trying to bring a fresh perspective looking at design elements and interactions through different genders eyes. Moross serves their works to promote messages they believe in, such as love, equality and non homogenisation. I came across Kate Moross, while I was researching graphic designers famous for their typographic- centred works. I loved how this designer uses colours and typography. This is something that always fascinated me and that I want to improve on. I think that this artist is extremely innovative and keeps producing original works by experimenting and combining different techniques, which is something that I want to be able to do within my practice. I also admire their ability in branding, which again is the direction I would like my practice to follow.

Paul Rand was an American designer¬ often referred to as a legend in the graphic design industry. He believed that graphic designs strength lay in it’s ability to be a worldwide language, through the simplicity and geometry of its forms. He even stated, “one quickly realizes that simplicity and geometry are the language of timelessness and universality”. The combination of colours, typography and media, helped to communicate Rand’s need to, “defamiliarize the ordinary”. Due to this unique style, he massively impacted the graphic design industry, even today. From the very beginning until his death in 1996, Paul Rand slowly altered America’s perspective on visual communication, through his article designs, adverts, and visual identity designs. Most of his works conveyed a mixture of visual arts and commercial design, therefore, bringing avant-garde European ideas to America. He was known as the first American designer to be influenced by Europe, looking to this country for inspiration in regards to his design work. However, he did not only search for inspiration in Europe, but in fact, was inspired by both Britain and Germany’s commercial arts journals, leading him to the designs of Cassandre and Moholy-Nagy. Soon after, he became influenced by the Modernist thinking on form and function. Trying to describe Rand’s style can be somewhat difficult. The way that he was able to use classical shapes and elements in their natural form, while still creating a message, has allowed Rand’s work to outshine that of the “ordinary” style. Rand was one of a few

08

designers whose work could be identified without any signature. His designs, therefore, have never been successfully copied, despite the large range of commissions he handled over his 60 year long career. The works that he created are unique compared to those of other designers, as Rand looked for inspiration from universal sources, therefore, discovering a new form of respect for classical shapes and forms. He would combine natural abstract pieces that were uncommon with shapes, pictures and / or type, to help create an interesting collage like structure and composition. The four main principles that made Paul Rand’s designs unique and innovative were; typography, simplicity, complex structure and discovery. Paul Rand is an iconic figure. His work ethics have influenced many designers worldwide and also inspired the way in which society views design. His main goal was to take something that was ordinary and create something extraordinary out of it. As Rand once said, “the problem of the artist is to defamiliarize the ordinary.” Some of his famous visual identity works included; IBM, UPS, Enron, Morningstar, Westinghouse, ABC, and NeXT. I admire how Paul Rand was able to create simple, striking designs that were based on his own philosophies. He was able to help me realise at a young age that, “everything is design” and that were are always surrounded by different, unique designs.
