BRIEF BACKGROUND Women don’t necessarily feel safe when walking home at night. They get jeered at, cat-called, followed, and worse-case scenario, they get attacked. Women have the right to feel safe when walking home, however unfortunately that is not always the case. The clothes they wear should not be an excuse for being catcalled, and they should be allowed to not worry about who they may meet on their way back.
THE CHALLENGE How can you use your creative skills to aid young women who feel unsafe at night? Let’s face this issue head on to create some real positive change in the world.
RATIONALE Whenever we walk around alone at night, we worry about someone following us, or possibly attacking us. We wanted to create something that could put our mind at rest, and help us feel safer.
AIM 1. Create and awareness of personal safety. 2. Help women who felt unsafe at night.
TARGET MARKET Students aged 18-25
- Safety device that women could have if they do not feel safe. They may worry that they will get attacked, or are being followed - Devices already available: - pepper spray, although it is illegal in the UK - high-pitched alarm to then run away - Possibly some apps - Potential feature could be: - High-pitched speaker with alarm - Tracking device to connect with Police - Time (act as a watch?) to know what time to tell the police - Device has to blend in with normal clothes - not too obvious for the attacker - Decently priced - affordable for everyone - maximum ideal price would be £25-30 - Ring? Watch? Bracelet? Necklace? - Potential App could include: - Add user’s friend in app --> link with phone contact - notify when walking home

DEVICE PLANNING RING SHAPE: Pros:
Cons:
- Small - Blends in well
- too much tech to hide in a small object as a ring
WATCH/BRACELET SHAPE: Pros:
Cons:
- Blends in well - Large enough to fit everything in - Could have potential to have different styles and colours of straps to be more stylish + cutomisable
- Could be a little bit clumpy
NECKLACE SHAPE: Pros:
Cons:
- Partially blends in - Could be a second collection to the bracelet/watch collection
- Would be quite a large feature on a necklace - only partially blends in

Aesthetics: - different coloured straps to customise - device itself comes in black and white options - buttons potentially be neon colours to see in dark - clock could be digital glow in the dark to give light to buttons
