This square is called the Heart of Chinatown because Chinatown started along one side of the square and now extends around and beyond it. The purpose to rebuild the square is to create a brand new urban plaza which shares the space both for the local residents and nearby officers. The challenge of this project is to reconnect the high and low street level, encouraging citizens to access the open space. Meanwhile, the park has an underground garage and cafe, providing more function to the people with a limited land resource.

The concept comes from the paper folding which adapt to show the contour of the site. Conceptual model was used throughout the process to explore ideas and relate them metaphorically to the site with the intention of gaining new insights and developing concepts in a physical sense.

The City Council of Alameda will consider a plan which transform the former Alameda Belt Line rail yard into a passive park with community garden, picnic areas, walking and bike trails, community gardens and playgrounds.

Site name: Alameda Beltline Site location: Alameda, CA Size: 22 Acres

5

The site was used for a rail yard 100 years ago, and a large amount of contaminant was left on the site. In order to recovery the ecological environment, I chose to remove the contaminant by phytoremediation. After 3 phrases, Alameda belt line park would be the sanctuary and heaven both for the wildlife and residents.

Non- point Pollution Lake Eutrophication

for people

STRATEGY 1:

WATER

Most of the water area is highly polluted and has reached level V water pollution grades in China’s river pollution grades. It is because the non-point water pollution and lake eutrophication by farm fertilization. The farm fishing industry is a major cause of the lake eutrophication, and other non-place pollution comes from the raw sewage and dumping litter. The local ecosystems have been damaged and destroyed fearfully. In order to support healthy function of aquatic ecosystems for fish, other wildlife, and human being, recovering and restoring aquatic ecosystems is extremely urgent.

Peach orchard and rape flower field in spring

Preserving the existing orchard and designing a new community garden for the local people is the approach for providing on-site food production. It also can bring economy benefits to the local people. Providing vegetables and fruits during annual growing seasons will improve human health and well-being. Community involvement and education about food production and nutrition will be improved by designing and managing food production on site.

The gabion structures help to reduce water speed, thereby increasing the time of absorption of the pollution by the wetland vegetation. The selected aquatic plants such as Chinese celery, meadow foxtail and reed have strong purification capacity to remove nitrogen and phosphors in the lake eutrophication water body.

Local folk performance in the visitor center

The proposed visitor center maintains some existing buildings and builds a new service center for a large amount of visitor from Shanghai, as well as providing the local folk performance at the central plaza. The existing buildings maintain the ancient architecture style of the Jiangnan Village which keep the function for the local residents for running retail stores or restaurants. The new building will play a multifunction such as a museum and a community center in the Qingxi Country Park which will both welcome to the visitors and the locals.
