Question: What is good?

To what extent does social responsibility impact the role and function of graphic design?


Introduction Graphic design is defined as being a visual language which can be adequately communicated through various different factors such as text, image, layout and colour and through different digital and print platforms. It is within understanding what graphic design, that there is an identification of the relevance in terms of the topic of responsibility and the different ways in which various social issues can be represented effectively communicated. In David Berman’s his book “Do good design� there is an exploration this idea of social responsibility within design, he believes that due to the importance that graphic design has in challenging some of the worlds biggest issues and solutions currently individual designers undoubtedly have a responsibility to what they present to an audience.


In a designers surroundings there is a power which is had from their awareness, in their consideration of addressing social issues within graphic design it is in the hand of the designers creativity which can be the most efficient as well as the most destructive tool. Ethically within any type of effective communication there should be an amount of awareness in what is being s. Posing the question of whether graphic designers as individual practicing designer, what power they have to create change within their skillset, and communicating a particular message. The purspose of this research will be to understand social responsibility as a whole and within graphic design. How change can be made within graphic design an the level of impact that can be created, and also the importance that is needed in terms of social awareness.
