Dummy Book Response

Anna Groman Dummy Book Feedback Response I decided to do my dummy book using two very different ideas and so the feedback was especially helpful in deciding which idea to go with. Whilst editing my photographs I thought I definitely didn’t want to do the idea of flowers and the female form because the more I looked at it the more cliché it felt, but Nate brought up a good point which was the colors used in those images helped connect the two sides of the spread. He said that because of this the second set of images is very straight forward whilst the first set is more abstract. I suppose I am going for abstract with the first set of images but I still want there to be a connection between the various photographs. I had really liked my first set of images when I saw them on the screen but when I got back the printed dummy book they didn’t look at all like what I had imagined. They seemed very mismatched and I think I could fix this by either using connecting colors (as I had in the second set) or by slicing up my images more as I have done for previous photo book projects. I think I still want to go with the first idea but I need to fill it out more. I think adding page numbers that go forwards and then backwards will help get my concept across of always being in a state of leaving. It was good to see how other people chose to do their layout because it served as inspiration for problem solving in my own book. Nate was very consistent with his placement of images whilst Will used white space successfully whilst changing the position of his images. I liked both ideas and realized that I had hardly left any white space in my book and maybe that’s why it looked a little cluttered. Looking at other photo books also made me think about the importance of page placement. I am not yet sure what I want my first image to be, nor my last, but this order is very important to how the viewer understands your mindset. Maybe I should use full white pages or change the opacity

towards the end. There is much to think about and I think the only way to figure it out is to try it and maybe print it and see what it looks like.
