Camp Counselor Camp Crosley YMCA / 2016-2018 (Seasonal)
Camp Crosley is a summer camp that has created a safe and fun environment for kids, ages 7 to 15. I worked as a counselor to teen girls for three summers. » I spent every day working at the High Ropes Facility on the camp. I led the course my second and third summers. » By my third summer, I became the leading female counselor and worked to support the other women working as counselors.
The Iowa State Fashion Show is put on at the end of spring semester every year. I acted as the director of the set design with a team of 15 to create a stage for student work from the fashion department at Iowa State University, as well as for our guest designer, Patagonia.

An Architecture of Acceptance Architecture 401 | Anna Lukens, Michael Stanley The time period that would demand a design such as this is one of climactic catastrophe. Due to overuse, the Colorado River has ceased to flow from the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of Mexico. As the damming of the river once offered great potential to mankind as a harness of the river’s power, the result is an extreme detriment to the natural environment. With water waning as a natural resource and power becoming less and less available, the populations of people who have built their lives on these environments have been forced to relocate out of their densely populated cities that span the length of the Colorado River. The need for survival will take precedence over the want of comfort. The challenge is to relocate these populations without causing further damage to the environments they will inhabit.

The first step to creating these habitats for people is to understand the damage that has already been done, the number of people needing to be relocated, and the opportune locations for these populations.
Form Finding Experimenting with different layouts of a minimal form led to the final layout of the habitat. Due to the lack of materials for construction and the simplistic construction practices, these shelters come from brick domes spanning a multitude of personal shelters within the community. The domes are made from sediment, build up from damming, and fly ash as the bonding agent.

The first stages of construction are the individual units for up to four people. Next comes the organization of water storage within the communities. Last are the domes that cover eight individual units. The domes are constructed in individual panels of bricks that are placed together using drones and temporary scaffolding to support the shape.

The shelters are simply walls for privacy with the brick domes spanning nine shelters each. The shelters are laid out in a fashion to allow the residents to collect water and work together in this time of crisis.

The Fashion Show Fall 2017 - Spring 2018 Working as the Set Design Director and supervising a team of fifteen, I designed two stages for the Iowa State Fashion Show with Patagonia as a guest designer. The stages reflect environmental beauty and preservation to promote Patagonia’s message: “Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.� One stage is modeled after a forest to celebrate the softer, beautiful natural landscapes that Patagonia strives to protect, while the other is a stark, rigid mountainscape to symbolize the strength and resilience of nature.

New York Rose Architecture 302 | Anna Lukens, Casey White Located in the heart of downtown Manhattan, the New York Rose is a residential building designed to enhance the amount of light entering each unit while casting a minimal shadow on the city skyline. The site lies above the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel next to Hudson Yards, making this an extremely significant site within the city. Because of the building heights in New York and the agressive shadows cast, the focus of this building is to demonstrate differently-shaped spaces to mimic the growth of a rose as it opens towards sunlight.

SHIFT Architecture 202 | Class of 2020 This design build project is located in northern Ames, IA. Designed and built by the second year architecture class of 2020, this project serves a variety of functions that cater to a variety of preferences. The focus of this space was to create a series of forms to cater to different meanings of the word “fun.� Built in three modules, this design build offers an exciting playground for all ages at any time of day.

Boston Institute of Advanced Fabrication Architecture 403 | Matt Cramer, Alec Hoppe, Anna Lukens In the year 2045, the Boston Institute of Advanced Fabrication utilizes the technological standards available to support students in the progression of their education. This school of higher education allows students to research and experiment with different materials and their properties to further advance construction methods. The Boston Institute of Advanced Fabrication provides an intelligent, hive mind driven robotic system working as an extension of the building to assist students in their work. This system also configures the building into the most efficient spatial organization for the type of projects being constructed each semester. The robots come in sizes and quantities tailored to best serve the unique spaces and tasks to which they have been assigned.

Colosseum Visitors’ Center Roma Tre | Drake Cecil, Anna Lukens, Katie McCoy Creating a visitors’ center for the Colosseum in Rome, Italy, was an intensive learning exercise to create a building in 48 hours with students from other schools. All the students involved represented six different study abroad programs located in Rome. The focus of this project was to create a new location for ticket purchases for touring the Colosseum and the Roman Forum and as an information center with a lecture hall. The site lies adjacent to the Colosseum and is currently used only for tourist photos with a dangerous road lining the other edge.

Our design retains the ability to nicely photograph the Colosseum and Arch of Constantine while burying the programatic elements of the project into the hill.

Casting 3D Prints Architecture 433 | Emma Henry, Anna Lukens Utilizing a 3D printer to fabricate a mold for casting, this brick experiments with angular geometries and voids to challenge the limits of inflexible molding. The goal of the project was to prototype a compressive, modular faรงade using Rockite to represent concrete.

The preliminary design basis began as a regular hexagon due to the various configurations that could be achieved through the manipulation and translation of the shape. The overall form remained consistent, a hexagon from which three corners were offset and the resulting curve extruded. The mass was then modified through an iterative process to improve both the design and the production. From the start, the design was shaped through the application of several parameters: the block would be able to be stacked in both the vertical and horizontal planes to form an interlocking wall; the block could be flipped, rotated, or otherwise manipulated to produce multiple arrangements of varying opaque and transparent conditions; and the block would be free-standing and bear a compressive stress load.
